Service Brakes Problems of Jeep Compass - part 1

On around 5 occasions beginning since late 2025 I have been driving and my emergency brake has turned on automatically while driving. Yesterday, while at a stop light the light turned green and my emergency brake turned on which caused traffic to be halted I had to turn my car on and off repeatedly to have my car work. When I turned right at the intersection this happened again. I was able to slowly pull over and once again turn my car off and on. Then it did it again today at the same intersection I was able to slowly pull over and turn my car off and on. I went to the Jeep dealership today and they could not find anything wrong. No codes indicated anything they said I had a small oil leak but that is all they could find.

After replacing both batteries in my Jeep Compass 2019. The “stop safely vehicle will shut down” message kept coming on. In traffic the car shut off completely and wouldn’t start. This is a reoccurring issue and Jeep doesn’t care. It needs to be fixed. To shut off completely during driving is a safety hazard!!!.

Note: the vehicle is totaled, and geico insurance is in possession. A month ago, we received brake warnings. We brought the vehicle to a mechanic to get checked and it passed. We did not get the warning again. 2 weeks ago, while turning into our driveway, as we were almost stopped, but still in the turn, the vehicle made a noise similar to the auto stop/start feature. The power brakes and steering stopped working (everything was stiff). The car accelerated, and we hit the corner of our garage (because we did not complete the turn into the driveway). The vehicle then hit a tree where it came to rest. The collision avoidance, didn't kick in. Unsure about the final speed of the vehicle, but it was fast enough to deploy the airbags and total the vehicle. There is a police report with the closter, NJ police.

The contact's husband owns a 2025 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop on several occasions. The abs and several other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer; however, the failure could not be diagnosed, but an unknown recall repair was performed; however, the failure recurred while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the failure was caused by a defective steering module. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that the dealer had recently diagnosed the vehicle with an electric parking brake system failure, a stuck electric parking brake switch, and a potential signal failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and denied the contact’s request for buyback assistance. A case number was provided. The vehicle was not repaired and remained with the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.

Upon engine start up at the home of my s/o, [xx], the warning "service automatic throttle control" appeared on the dashboard. Placing the vehicle into gear first in reverse, then in drive resulted in sudden acceleration and erratic lurching. I had no brakes whatsoever. At one point my s/o nearly hit on the dash per signed affidavit. I had to place my 2024 Jeep Compass in park in order to stop and then slowly maneuver it into a safe parking spot before having it towed to golling Jeep ram Dodge in bloomfield hills, mi. Tech diagnosis two days later showed error code 2299. But the vehicle started and operated as normal. Nothing wrong. After a test drive the next day to be sure, they had me get my vehicle. Although my door sticker gives a manufacturing date of 6/2024, I call your attention to NHTSA recall 24v-240 over throttle control system software. Strangely enough, this exact same malfunction occurred at the same address on [xxx], almost a year earlier. It was towed at that time to suburban jdr in farmington, mi where, again, my vehicle showed the same 2299 code but otherwise, performing well, advising me to come get my Compass. So, both times my 2024 Jeep Compass took control away from me, this time with no brakes, almost injuring my s/o. Fortunately, both incidents happened in her gated community with no pedestrians or traffic. In addition to this intermittent, dangerous malfunction, I owned both a 2018 and a 2021 Compass one of which, like the Dodge ram recall, had a horribly malfunctioning turn signal. The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the abs and traction control warning lights illuminated, and the steering wheel and the front passenger’s side of the vehicle were shaking and vibrating abnormally. The contact stopped the vehicle to inspect it and became aware that the front passenger’s side wheel was extremely hot to the touch. The contact deactivated the traction control light, and the failure was temporarily corrected before recurring. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer for assistance. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v301000 (power train). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 61,000.

Check engine light came on after starting to back out of my driveway,dashboard lights flashing. Car just turned off, turned car back on emergency brake turned on by itself, all exterior lights were flashing. Car turned off, I called roadside assistance and they towed to nearest dealership, that was September 4, dealership said they replaced sensor and to come pick up the car,that was sept 16, when I went to pick up the car, when I started it warning lights came on and all exterior lights were flashing. Had to leave the car for dealership to check out, they called and said another sensor was bad, car only has 2013 miles . Still without a car it is now sept 18, . But I still get to pay my lease payment for the whole month. Also car is due for nys inspection but dealership cant do because warning lights are still on.

Unknown. Saw there was recall in past for rear piston but mine was not affected. But I’m having issues with the brakes. When slowing down or coming to stop when using the brake, the whole car shakes and rattles.

Increased a 2022 Jeep Compass with 25500 miles and was almost $25. 000. 00 from carvana based out of atlanta and tempe az. My daughter was so excited as it was delivered by carvana and about 2 hours after it was delivered to her she drove it onto the highway and as soon as she drove it on the highway at about 50 miles per hour it rattled so violently and pulled right like the vehicle was about to fall apart. So frantically and scared and crying was able to limp it to the side of the highway and called me and called carvana & took almost 2 hours to get someone live other than robots chat things. She was told by carvana to take it to pep boys. With no apology or a bit of concern for her safety said nothing or even apologized. A criminal company. So the service manager said that he could not believe that a so called 150 point inspection that the most important system for safety on a vehicle being the braking system. The rotors were bad and warped. They were never turned or replaced. He said they took a horrible and risky and illegal repair at carvana with just putting new brake pads on damaged rotors and a badly worn tire and never balanced any of the tires and all were terribly out of balance and alignment was so far off specs he was upset she could even drive it down the street so this is unacceptable and unsafe and I hope this criminal company can be fined and sued and made an example out of. I will be contacting the media in atlanta, georgia and tempe, arizona as well as the local newspapers & news channels on your side for investigations. Also I will notify the organizations I belong to after serving in iraq and [xxx] being the reason I could not go see it as it was delivered as they don’t allow test drives or inspection by customer before delivery so we rely on these crooked people to make sure 150 point inspection of nothing. Abs light came on, took to mechanic, was advised he needed to order part, picked up vehicle while waiting for part to come in. While driving to work was using cruise control and put on my brakes and had no brakes, I ended up rear ending into another vehicle. Causing extensive damage to my car.

3 times the emergency braking has shut off during braking. The emergency braking system goes offline and displays a “needs service indicator” it has been to the dealer for repair 3 times. Each time I was told that there is no current repair solution. They simply reset the system and send me off. Each time the reset works for a few miles but does not solve the problem. The indicator is on again for a 4th time! I have only owned this car for 9 months! this is a major braking problem and needs to be addressed as I feel the company cares little for this safety issue.

The forward crash detection detects objects on the side of the road that do not present a hazard. The vehicle then automatically, abruptly brakes causing temporary loss of control in the vehicle. In one instance the system detected the barriers in a construction zone causing me to almost lose control of the vehicle and crash into the barrier. The problem has been confirmed by both the dealership as well as Jeep. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacture, police, or insurance. There are no lights or indicators of the issue.

Emergency brake locking when vehicle is in drive mode. Also unable to drive from a stopped position except very slowly which can cause a rear end collision.

When driving my Jeep Compass, there have been numerous instances of the vehicle stalling out when slowing down or stopping at a light/stop sign. This has happened on busy roads, at busy intersections, and on country roads. When it happens, I cannot control any aspect of the vehicle; the breaks no longer work, I cannot turn the wheel, I cannot change gears or easily put it into park, and it takes multiple attempts to turn it off and back on. There are no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the incidents occurring, which started on 4/22/2025. Today, 4/29/2025, I checked my oil level and found that it was extremely low, although it should not be and I'm not yet due for an oil change. The Jeep Compass is going through more oil than usual and there is no message or notification showing at any time. I believe that this is the cause of the issues, and makes it extremely unsafe for myself, my passenger and other drivers/vehicles as it has happened on the highway and at intersections, where it could easily result in a serious accident.

While driving my vehicle the parking brake engaged itself and my vehicle stopped suddenly without me engaging the brakes. I took the vehicle to the dealership and they stated it was an issue with the emissions system that caused the vehicle to do an “emergency stop”. I paid the amount required by the warranty and they stated they fixed the issue. However, while driving in the freeway (approximately 75 mph), the vehicle began to have the same issue and began to stop while I was driving. My daughter and myself were in the vehicle, during high traffic and we were fortunate not to be hit while driving when this happened. I have contacted the dealership again to have them inspect the vehicle again. I am concerned there is a manufacturing issue that is causing this problem and I am afraid to drive my vehicle especially with my children in the car.

Every time I turn on the car the parking brake is on and it also turns on while im driving and it causes the car to stall while in motion.

The auto stop has stopped my vehicle at a light and failed to start back up. On several occasions I have been at a red light, and my car refused to take off, like it is just stuck. I have to put the car in park and restart. The auto stop is very dangerous, I have to turn it off when I get in my car. ( I have to warn family when they are using my car) a few times I have forgotten. I have taken my car to 3 Jeep dealerships and they say they cant find a problem. They is an issue and no one is hearing me.

The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and running, the brake warning light began flashing. The vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA action number: pe22013 (engine and engine cooling, engine). The contact called the local dealer and was informed that there were no open recalls on the VIN. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.

When starting my 2019 Jeep Compass an error message stated "coolant temperature high" and "service brake system. " it then sputtered and shut down. I waited a minute and then restarted the vehicle. There was a lag for the car to start and then it went back to normal and no codes were present.

On 4 separate occasions over a 5 day period, the electronic parking brake system spontaneously engaged. This caused the vehicle to lose power and slow until it came to a complete stop/stall. The epb indicator was displayed on the dash. I tried several courses of action to resolve the issue including putting the car in park, attempting to disengage the epb as well turning the vehicle off and on again. This issue presents itself with no prior warning. Fortunately, I was not highway driving during any of the mishaps. I was able to coast to the side of the road or to a parking lot safely. This issue presents itself a dangerous issue that other Jeep Compass owners are also experiencing with seemingly no true resolve from the Jeep manufacturer.

Speedometer doesn't work, abs, brakes, engine and traction light keeps on. The shift lever changes by itself from d to m while driving. Abs module has to be replaced at my cost when other 2011 Jeep Compass have a recall f 50 for the same issue.

I was driving my 2019 Jeep Compass trailhawk and had just started to accelerate when my car showed a warning light for "high coolant temp. " the car subsequently lost all engine power and immediately initiated my parking brake. The car was stopped in the middle of the roadway, posing a serious danger risk to myself and other drivers. Had this occurred 30 more feet, I would've been in the middle of a railway crossing. After a few seconds, the temperature indicator returned to normal, though the car still had no power. I had to restart my car two times, then the issue was temporarily resolved and I was able to drive back to my house.

While driving with my wife and 3 kids the car automatically braked by itself. Lucky to be able to report this. The nthsa doesn’t have any current recalls on my VIN. It should now this model vehicle could be causing future accidents or deaths. Hope this gets some attention ASAP.

Abs shuts off while driving for no apparent reason. When this happens cruise control shuts dow also. Traded a 2022 Compass in with same issue and problem was never solved.

While driving the emergency brake self engages causing the Jeep to come to a sudden stop.

Initially, the dash light would not go off once the door was closed. It killed the battery therefore had to take it to dealership and leave it, was told it was the auxiliary battery that was causing this. Batteries were charged but not replaced. The next incident was with fog lights. Carrying it to dealership over 6 times to find out from last dealership that the feature on the car was which was not explained when purchased or none of the mechanics could explain. Next I found out that the 3rd brake light was not working. Carried it to dealership only to learn that the wires had been spliced and it did not come from the manufacturer like this. Carried it back to dealership where it was purchased , they installed supposedly safety pulse light which was not working. The mechanics installed a new one which still didn't work. Eventually could not get it to work but got the 3rd brake like to work without the pulse. This was supposed to be a safety feature that the dealership say they put on all of their cars , question was asked if other 2024 Jeeps had issues or was it just mine. The answer was that it doesn't work on all cars. My issue is if dealership installed it should have been corrected before it was sold and also sales people that don't know the details of the car and mechanics likewise. I have a little over 7700 miles on this car and issue started around 2400 miles.

My vehicle shuts off while driving and while vehicle is in “drive” mode, after my vehicle stopped the “emergency brake” automatically pops on then my car stalls before finally turning back on. This has been ongoing for months. The last incident happened two days ago while I was on a busy road and my car stopped in mid traffic while I was in drive and caused a panic. My engine light came on and I took it to get hooked up by the reader at an auto place and the following codes were displayed “pidd2” & “u1428” upon checking online and researching the issue I found that my vehicle make, model and year has been recalled for the same issues that I am currently experiencing with my vehicle and the tcm system needing to be reset. Specifically the Chrysler u87 recall.

My [xxx] mother (Jeep enthusiast) bought a 2025 Jeep Compass. One week after she bought it the rpm light started flashing. The dealer stated the main computer (electrical system) completely failed. There is no stability in the car. There's no braking system, no power steering, no cruise control, no nothing, the seat moves without her adjusting it, the automatic dimmer switch turns on without user intervention - the Jeep is a complete lemon. It is unsafe to drive. It's like an octopus without a head. They said they'd buy it back from her for $14,000 less than she paid - a week ago. The part is on back order. She recently moved interstate and is forced to between states - 5 hours each way. I am beyond livid. She's been a lifelong Jeep owner who has been treated horribly by this company. 1. When I come to a stop my car jolts forward hard like I was hit from behind. 2. Issue is the lighting display is very dim during the day time once in a while randomly dims making it difficult to see my speed. 3. My radio panel shuts off randomly. 4. Auto collision detector is off .

I bought the car [xxx] they would not let me take the car home until [xxx]. I have had a problem with it ever since. Airbag system light keeps coming on, passenger seat does not work properly, car is hesitant to start or accelerate at times, cuts and have to restart at times, brakes grinding and squealing . I have taken it back to them several times and they refuse to exchange or fix the problems I was told I should use my warranty to have it fixed I even took it to one of their other dealerships in irving and they refuse to fix it. When driving the electronic emergency brake self engages thus causing the car to come to an abrupt stop. You will need to turn the car off and on again to dis-engage the brake. This has happened sever times both on the highway and local streets.

I was driving into a busy intersection and briefly stopped. When I took my foot off the brake to go, the car completely froze. The brake pedal was hard and the steering wheel was locked. The lights were on, however I couldn't turn the car off to restart it. It would not move. A police officer had to push the car over to the side. After waiting a while (25 minutes) for the tow truck, I was able to turn the car off. The car was towed to the nearest mechanic, but he can't find anything wrong with it. Despite, hundreds of online complaints about this same thing happening to Jeep Compasses, Jeep will not take a look at it unless I pay $490 for a diagnostic test. I already had to pay for the towing and a mechanic to look at it. Jeep Chrysler needs to recall these cars before someone is killed.

I bought my 2016 Jeep Compass latitude in September of 2021 with a warranty which because of some rotor and other issues they gave me a loaner vehicle while they did the repairs for a week or so. It didn't give me too many problems for a while but then in these last two years or so then a lot has been breaking on it or acting up & I only got a little over 86k miles on it, but any warranties are expired at 80k. I've replaced the battery, the rear hub/bearings 2x, all of the rotors & brakes 2x now, I go through engine oil even though I do regular oil changes on it, and most recently it was doing a "death wobble" that was so unsafe I was afraid to drive it myself let alone have my son with me in case it did it & it was very unpredictable when it would happen too, generally over 45 mph and after I had been driving for over 15 minutes would be the most likely time for it, unfortunately not always though & the 1st mechanic I took it too couldn't even get it to do it. The 2nd mechanic suggested changing the driver brake line to the caliper to see if that helped since I'd just replaced that brake caliper but that the majority of my front end suspension, hub/bearing & axle, spring coils, etc. Would all need replaced because of how worn out they was already looking too (it was exactly 86003 miles when I went to the 2nd mechanic) and if it was still doing it after that then he would figure it out, thankfully replacing the brake line seems to have stopped the "death wobble" problem for now. I'm not sure this is even a valid complaint, if not then I apologize but I've never seen so many parts, issues at once, esp. With that mileage. The unpredictable "death wobble" is definitely a safety concern at least & incase others have all these costly problems at once too. I just got my Jeep paid off & have to have cervical & lumbar surgeries ASAP so I will just have to fix it ASAP.
