Engine quit while own shifting on automatic transmission. Went out of gear and had to pull a side without engine power.
Nhtsa veh rec # 14v-4387 -still unresolved due to part availabilty - there have been more than two-dozen instances where Jeep vehicle has shut itself down rendering all driver safety / control features (breaks, steering, air-bags) completely off! this vehicle failure happens at different speeds, direction (fwd-rev) while turning, going straight, uphill & down etc - this Jeep vehicle will shut off without warning since the key is in the on position, accessories (radio, wipers, fans etc) will remain on making it very difficult to detect that the engine has stopped and there is a zero engine power. It's not until you realize you've lost propulsion (passing or going uphill), slowing down, or loss of power assist steering and breaking, that you begin to react and try to restart the Jeep. The first reaction is often panic driven breaking and getting out of harms way. Today (3/19/2015) was my worst experience yet! driving ~35 mph on 2 lane road w/ mod-heavy morning traffic around me (7:15am) and this Jeep shuts itself off. The car directly behind me swerved to avoid me as I had no power, and could not safely get out of the flow of traffic! I find it totally reprehensible that as of yet, there are no parts available to fix thus known defect! this is a 2005 vehicle - w/ a recall date of sept 3 2014, more than six months ago, and as of today, because it's my primary vehicle, I risk my, & family lives, all the while Jeep and the us gov't have known about its defect. I expect Jeep and the us gov't will defend and hold me (and any other drivers of this vehicle) harmless against any undesired events caused by this defect. Please respond if possible.
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving at 60 mph, the vehicle lost power. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 14v438000 (electrical system) and 13v175000 (electrical system, power train); however, the parts needed to do the repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Vehicle is an automatic, suddenly attempted to manually shift into a lower gear. The vehicle suddenly slowed down to 5 miles an hour and the rpms started to red line. Check engine light came on and stayed on all day. This has happened numerous times in the last few months without warning.
Loss of power while driving, wont shift, no cruise control, brake lights on, . This happens at lest one a week.
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5. 7l stalls while driving, goes into limp mode constantly while driving or stationary, unintended acceleration while stationary and surges forward when brakes fully applied. Also got the recall for ignition issue but no parts available so have to be careful till then. Ignition recall is even stated to be a temporary fix. Electrical issues cause sever safety concern for customer safety. No warning when issue will happen. Replace parts stated by professional diagnostic and still have same electrical issues.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated intermittently when attempting to accelerate from an idle position, the vehicle would independently lose power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The dealer stated the ignition sensor and a new catalytic converter. The vehicle sensor was replaced. The catalytic converter was not. A couple days later the failure reoccurred. The dealer then stated the vehicle did not provide any error messages for any component on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000. Az.
Lights lit on dash, abs, traction control,& service electrical brake system. Replaced brakes & no change lights still lit up. Got recall notice p41 in sept, 2014 stating problem with ignition switch,& that the part is not available & will contact me when its available. It is now over a year later still nothing and is way beyond a reasonable of time for repair !!! after driving all winter without the traction control. Now when I drive the vehicle when I turn it off it won't start & it wont start for 11/2 to 2 hours I am just stuck waiting & waiting! it is totally random sometimes it starts & sometimes it will only crank for a split second and then I am stuck, tried to jump it doesn't help at all makes no difference. Also the headlights will flash off & on at times, as well as the dash lights. This is my only car so this is a major problem for me. Have spoken with the dealer can't help parts not available.
On may 22, 2014 I took my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4 x 4 with 5. 7l hemi engine for recall #n23 reprogram final drive control module. The mileage at that time was 93758. After that "fix" everything seemed to run okay then on July 2, 2014 due to a grinding sound in the rear, my sons father in law checked the codes and found the emergency brake tone ring show. Also on the dashboard a "service 4 wheel drive system" message appeared. He replaced the right rear hub assembly and both emergency brake shoes, but when he went to test drive the vehicle, he said it wouldn't shift correctly. I believe he said it wouldn't shift out of 4 wheel low. Vehicle did also stall also he said. He checked internet and found loads of reports of this model and year Jeep vehicle having problems only after having the n23, NHTSA id# 13v175000. Recall "fix" performed. Mine was done at tri-cities Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, ram at kingsport, TN. It appears to be a computer related problem, as that's what was reprogrammed for the recall. I am disabled and need the Jeep to haul my handicapped scooter and me with my wife driving. It's essential that it's not out of service. I called the aforementioned dealer service department today and spoke to "greg" who said he could check it out. I had my sons father in law call him to fully explain what was dysfunctional as he was the one that experienced the problem and thus fully tell greg about it. I was told that greg said we could tow it in at our expense (not drive it) and he'd check it, but until a recall notice is received , anything done would be charged to me. Please expedite these thousands of complaints ASAP. I need my vehicle. I don;t have bus or taxi service, and with my disabilities (fused left hip, mainly) I can't ride in most vehicles because of leg room.
In route to open gym for my 3yr old, after exiting exprsway in traffic approx 5-7mins, SUV shuts off. After it shut off it would nt start for approx 4 mins, it did not fully crank yet cranked, in a putting pattern, I was able to pull it out of traffic into an office park located at 3525 piedmont rd ne atl, GA 30308 in front of building 7 entering from piedmont rd. Once parked, my temp gauge was on hot panned hard right, the SUV would not start, I allowed it to cool down to halfway, during that time I made 4 attempts to start the SUV. Each time it would putter, or sound as if it was out of gas. Once SUV cooled to half I attempted to start and it started in the same putter fashion as before, yet appearing to catch as if it was start normal, all the while smoking out the back a slight pop could be heard coming from underneath the front of the vehicle, yet as it appeared to start I would give it gas with hopes that it would catch and then it just shut off and started smoking and there was a noticeably different odor that my 3 yr old and I smelled, from there I got out of the truck to see if the smoke was coming from the radiator, since the temp gauge was just on hot, I notice there was a fire burning in the lower back of the engine region, I immediately lowered the hood due to not having anything to prop it open with, I immediately got my 3 yr old son out of the vehicle to safety, I return to get his car seat and anything to hopefully salvage, I then return to the SUV to put out the fire out as best I could, I appeared to out on both sides and just smoking badly. Called a ride to take me and my 3yr old home. The following day I checked the SUV, the engine area, hood, front windshield had completely burned, there is no hood area, the hood is in the windshield, and everything else forward chard and melted, to the yellow pieces, I was able to take photos, and a video.
June of 2014 and still to this day the gear shift can be moved from "p" to any gear, and that is when no keys are in the ignition/and no foot on the brake. I was working under the hood and my 4 year old son did just that and almost ran me over. I checked and the vehicle had no keys in it they were with me in my tool box because I didn't want him to do just that. I checked out the situation to make sure it wasn't a fluke, and to my surprise and still til this day, I can enter the vehicle with no keys and no foot on the brake just reach in and move the gear shift from "p" to any gear resulting in the clunk of the transmission and rolling of the vehicle. This is very unnerving and would like this to be fixed. I have read countless articles and blogs about this exact same problem.

My transmission fills with water causing it to downshift hard to 3rd gear. I triple flushed the transmission and it was running alright for approximately two weeks, then it filled with water again and I now have the same problems that I had before. I see there was a recall for the vehicles with the 3. 7, but I have the v8 and would like to know what I can do about this problem.
Back in February I got notice of the following recall and had it performed eventhough was not having the problem. Safety recall n23/ NHTSA 13v-175. Reprogram final drive controller module. 2005 - 2010. (wk) Jeepã¿â® Grand Cherokee. 2006 - 2010. (xk) Jeep commander, after this recall was perfrom 4low would not work. We were able to reset the module by resetting a fuse but, this only lasted a few months. In June the 4low stopped working again. Because we heard there was a new service bulletin out we took it back again for another flash. This time they were also wanting to replace the acutator motor, which was not available. Other people who have had this part replaced have been unsucessful. On top of this my dealer was telling me I had to pay for this part and they are claiming it is not tied to the n23 recall. We have not paid to have this part replaced because I don't feel I should have to pay for something that is chryslers doing. It is clear that the software updates have caused these issues to arise and chrylser is not owning up to it. I feel NHTSA needs to inforce that when a recall is made it truely needs to be done and the fix really works. If issues arise with a recall NHTSA needs to make sure the company makes it right. The Chrysler customer care center is a joke. No one can answer your questions, concerns and calls are not return. Making us go back and forth for updates that continue to not fix the real problem and making us replace parts that don't fix the problem is not the right solution. It forces consumers to not have recalls performed. Nhtsa needs make chrylser answer and fix this correctly. A vehicle that cannot go into 4low or neutral is just as unsafe!.

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving various speeds, all of the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. The contact mentioned that the accelerator pedal had to be depressed with force in order to keep the vehicle moving. The failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the shifter module failed. The vehicle was repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however, the part needed to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 95,992.
After we had the following recall done. Report receipt date: may 07, 2013 NHTSA campaign number: 13v175000 component(s): electrical system , power train the vehicle has failed to be put into 4 wd neutral or visa versa, not allowed to be put into drive. We tow behind my motorhome. It happened the first time we tried to tow it, it went into neutral but would not come back out easily. After ~1/2 hr of trying I was able to get it to go back into drive. I took it back to the dealer he could not find anything wrong. About 3 weeks later after pulling it behind the RV and then trying to put it back into neutral it would not go into neutral, took it to a different dealer who reran the flash on the final drive. It worked fine for about a month. No it has happened a 3rd time while my wife was on a trip, she cannot get it back into neutral. I have read of other people having the same problem after the recall, which indicates the recall is causing the problem. I doubt that the dealer will repair for free so I think the NHTSA should require the dealers to repair the problem as part of the original recall.
We had the recall done on the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2005. They reflashed the ecu that controls the ability to shift the Jeep into neutral in order to tow behind motor home. After the recall we had trouble 3 times with the Jeep either not shifting from neutral to drive or from drive to neutral. The last time this happen the Jeep was stranded as my wife could not pull it behind the motorhome. Ultimately I had to go to florida and we drove the motorhome and Jeep back separately. I contacted the dealer about this and at this point I do not have confirmation that this will be fixed as part of the original recall. Since this appears to be a common problem I, based on internet searches, I believe that Jeep should fix the vehicle even if it is out of warranty. I intend on taking the Jeep back to the dealer this week and if I do not get satisfaction I will file additional complaints. I would hope that the NHTSA would force Jeep to repair the issue.
While driving on the freeway, the vehicle suddenly shifted itself into 3rd gear. Paddle shifting was inoperable and vehicle will up or down shift. Error codes given are p0700, and p0406. Problem seemed to resolve after restarting vehicle, but then shifts again after a couple of minutes. Now vehicle stays in 3rd gear permanently. Fluid levels ok, guessing it is electrical/computer related issue based on internet research. Taking to dealer soon to have final drive controller new software installed based on recall #n23. Hoping it is related to that issue.
After having safety recall n23 done to my Jeep Grand Cherokee 5. 7l I have since been locked out of 4-wheel low. The n23 safety recall for my vehicle has not worked as it has created another safety issue by me not having my 4-low in a state (colorado) that I use 4-low in for winter and for recreation use. I was almost trapped in the cold mountains due to not knowing the n23 recall deactivated my 4-low. Not only if this a safety issue but my vehicles value has diminished greatly as now it's a 2wd vehicle.
When driving my Jeep around say anywhere above 25 mph, if I let off the gas pedal, the front end nose dives and a loud clunk is felt like the transmission fell out. Maintenance is up to date, gas has no water, it just does this every single day. So I have to drive my Jeep a certain way in order to try to avoid this beating on the transmission. Another version of this is for example: I go to pass a car I step on the gas, the transmission kicks down like it should but when I'm ready to slow down after passing a loud clunk! and the vehicle nose dives again like someone had put it in 1st gear at 50mph. About 50% of the time after this happens my rpm's will stay very high like when it drops down for passing it wont shift down for the speed im doing it wants to stay in the passing gear. There has been even times when its really bad, and the rpm's wont regulate down I have to pull over put the vehicle in park and start over. Its very exhausting and hazardous with this transmission and this Jeep. Nothing but problems.
