1 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2019

My battery light came on so I pulled over at an advanced auto and had the battery checked. This was on my way to work. They tested my battery and said the battery that I had just replace 3 months earlier had a bad cell. How is that possible? I had it replaced and then tried to start the vehicle to test the alternator. At that point my alternator started smoking after the vehicle started. They said my alternator wasnt charging enough and it needed replaced. At this point I had to disconnect my battery to stop the alternator from smoking. When I did this, my battery felt unusually hot. Got it tested and it blew my battery. I replaced the battery and the alternator and then the starter was not functioning at all. I replaced the starter and there was no change. The starter was not getting any power. As im reading through the complaints section the only two things it could be it seems is the tipm or the pcm. This seems like it should be a major safety concern and should be looked into before someone gets hurt. Maybe could be a class action lawsuit on Jeep as it should stand behind its product.

2 Starter problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

While driving the vehicle shuts off completely. Try restarting may take several attempts. There is no response from the engine not turning over, starter not engaging. Once it starts it drives fine until the next occurrence. This also happens quite often when first trying to start the car as well.

3 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2018

The Jeep is having trouble starting, the starter is running for several seconds but it wonts start until the second or third try. On several occasions the vehicle stall while running.

4 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2018

Starter engages, but will not start wipers work without being turned on . Battery depleted for no reason. Engine quits for no apparent reason. This all happened while vehicle was stationary, but just as easily been while moving.

5 Starter problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2017

I purchased my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland last year from a Toyota dealer. Only because no other dealers had one with saddle interior. So far the radiator needed to be replaced because it cracked leaking fluid and recently the push button starter went. Is there a recall on the push button starter malfunctioning?.

6 Starter problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2016

Jeep will only start with remote starter. Push button start does not work. I had the fuel pump replaced however, am just learning of a tipm recall for this model. Vehicle was in stationary position in my garage when it would not start.

7 Starter problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2015

When stopped trying to start the engine, push button starter will not start the car. Have to turn the switch to get a restart. Sometimes takes several tries. Have had engine not cut off when button pushed. Had to repeat several time to get engine to stop.

8 Starter problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2014

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the vehicle decreased in speed and the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was not able to restart. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, who installed a new fuel injector kit and timing belt but the failure recurred. In addition, the contact noticed that there was smoke coming from the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer, who diagnosed that the timing belt shredded and a starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign id number: 14v530000 (electrical system) but the part was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

9 Starter problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2014

My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland 5. 7l has not starting multiple times. Other symptoms include intermittent rough idle after starting, sputtering/missing when accelerating and uphill, and intermittent failing to shift at high rpm. Dealer proposing to install starter/fuel module relay which Chrysler has made due to "amount of people with this problem" but quoting me $410 for the repair. No definitive diagnosis that this will fix all the symptoms. Advised by dealer to not drive vehicle until problem is fixed as the truck can stall or turn off at any time resulting in a serious safety risk. This is a very dangerous problem!!!.

10 Starter problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2014

After several attempts at starting the vehicle with the push button start and it would not turn over. At first, the tire pressure indicator light was coming on. I took it to discount tires and they said the air pressure on all 4 vehicles was fine. Two days later, tire pressure indicator came on again. Once I was leaving work, I attempted to start vehicle and after about 5 tries, it finally started. At this point I was a bit leery and decided to drive the vehicle to Jeep dealer and have them check it out. At the time the rep stated that he could not look at the vehicle until Monday because he two days behind. After describing to him what was going on, he indicated that the starter seemed to be sticking and he would not recommend that I continue to drive the vehicle for safety that it may stall while driving. I drove the car home and parked it. The next day, I tried to start the vehicle to drop it off at the dealer. No luck. After several attempts, I gave up and ended up getting a rental for the weekend. After extensive research on the internet it appears to be a faulty part in the vehicle that has enforced a class action law suite from several Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge owners. Predominately owners of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle is still not repairable, and I don't see the point in towing it to the dealer and pay them $100 to diagnose the problem has been declared a nationwide issue. I too am a dedicated Jeep customer and really want to stand behind the product, hopefully this won't turn into a gm issue.

11 Starter problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2014

I have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with approximately 32k miles. I began seeing an issue several weeks ago where the engine would crank but wouldn't start (using push button starter). Eventually it would start. Over the last several weeks the problem has intermittently reappeared but seems to be getting worse as it's taking longer to start once the issue is seen. I've noticed that if I use the key instead of the push button it'll start right away. In what I initially thought was unrelated I also experienced the engine simply cutting off while driving. Fortunately I was only driving about 5 mph on both occasions in which this occurred. Please contact me if any additional details are required. Thank you,.

12 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2014

Vehicle began presenting with grinding noise upon start up (similar noise to turning the key in older vehicle once engine was running). Brought to dealer's attention at time of service - dealer could not duplicate grinding noise. Within a few weeks, vehicle began taking more than 1 attempt to turn engine over (sometimes up to 4-5 attempts), including prolonged engagement of starter motor. If multiple attempts, noticed rich fuel smell. Mentioned to dealer at time of next scheduled service - dealer could not duplicate starting problems over the course of 2 days in their care. Dealer said to wait for more frequent occurrences to begin then they would check again. Starting issues were intermittent and continued to occur until last week, where after "hard start," vehicle engine stalled while in reverse pulling out of parking spot (<5 mph); however, power to lights and radio remained on; steering locked up, and had to push vehicle to safe spot. Took 2 starts to get engine running again. Next day, after 4 failed starting attempts (5th successful), had battery tested and replaced day after thinking it could be part of problem (starter and alternator tested fine). The day after battery replacement, vehicle produced what sounded like abnormal start, then engine stalled while in motion under 5 miles per hour. Based on evidence and prior reports, faulty tipm is suspect. We are fortunate that both stalls occurred under 5 mph; it is only a matter of time before this happens at highway speeds. Hoping the NHTSA will force Chrysler's hand into opening formal investigation into faulty electrical systems in vehicles.

13 Starter problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start when the push button starter was engaged. The vehicle would occasionally start after several attempts. The contact also noticed a burning smell when attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who was unable to diagnose or replicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 23,000.

14 Starter problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2013

This is the second time that the alternator shorted out seized and killed battery within 9 months, so battery completely dies - first time couldn't even jump start so had to tow, second time I left it connected to jump starter wires for 8 minutes and the car started and took it to dealership. First time it happened in Nov 2013 and now again in October 2014. Central avenue Chrysler Jeep dealership doesn't know why this is happening, as it shouldn't. I had to pay for the replacement twice now, $400 first time and $500 second time.

15 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2013

October 20, 2013, attempted to turn ignition off when the starter motor remained engaged and continued cranking after shut off and engine check light came on. Starter motor finally disengaged after pushing the start/stop button multiple times. Vehicle has only 20652 miles on the odometer. Vehicle taken to the dealer who advised that the starter motor never remained engaged while cranking during their test. Dealer invoice reports "check veh for check engine light on, hook up to scanner found "dtc p0108". Checked for flash found power train fllash reprogam pcm then retest, vehicle ok". Dealer mentioned nothing about a possible tipm problem. Vehicle ran fine for a while, but the same thing occurred several months later. Since the second incident, no further problems until yesterday (September 6, 2014) when the engine would not start as the starter motor remained engaged and continued to crank. The starter motor disengaged and stopped cranking when the start/stop buttom was pushed, but the same thing happened 5 sucessive times when additional attempts were made to start the engine. Finally, the vehicle started. I googled the symptoms and learned about the ongoing problem with the tipm involving the 2011 Jeeps. I've recently received two recall notices from Chrysler for "p36 / NHTSA 14v-391 and 154" (lamp wiring and brakes), but nothing regarding the tipm problem. I now have a lack of confidence in my Jeep.

16 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2013

Tipm- I went to start my Jeep this morning that felt like a weak start up, it then hiccuped and died. Thinking it maybe just a one time incident, tried again, with the result of the starter just cranking for about 5-6 seconds. This repeated multiple more times before I called a tow truck to take to a local mechanic. It was diagnosed with bad fuel pumps, and the cost to replace was $1600. This prompted me to call the dealership and ask if that's even possible. After explaining the issue at hand, the service manager told me that he doesn't believe the issue to be caused by faulty pumps, but from the tipm. This is obviously not the first time he has heard of this issue. I then did some research on the web and found this to be a pretty prevalent issue amongst owners of this year, make, and model. When I called him back to see if the backorder issues were true, he told me it would take around three weeks to get the part. I immediately asked for the Jeep corporate number, called them, and began to speak to a guy about it there. He told me that the production rate was one per 7 days. . . And that coupled with there are tons of these cases out there is why it was going to take a while to get the part. He went on to tell me that sounds crazy, but its just how fast, (or slow) they are producing them. I asked if the new product was a replica of the original and he said this is a solution for the previous one and would fix the problem, not just a bandaid. He advised me to have it fixed and hope the recall comes and I would be eligible for a reimbursement. With the price of this fix being so high and the amount of people affected, this has to be recalled. Please have anyone having this issue file a complaint here. This customer service rep told me there just hasn't been enough formal complaints about it to validate a recall. . . .

17 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2013

Vehicle: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4, purchased new in October 2010. I experienced difficultly in starting vehicle, problem persisted and became worse. Dealership indicated bad fuel pump, replaced at a cost of $1,000. 00 +. Starting problem persisted and again back too dealership. Diagnosis this time was bad starter module (tipm unit) cost $1,000. 00 + and I was told that the part was on "extreme" back order and they could not even give me an estimate on the arrival date . I was also informed that the bad tipm had created an electrical short that had led to the initial failure of the fuel pump. Present: eight (8) weeks have passed and no part available and a vehicle sitting in my driveway gathering the leaves of the change of the season. I have been a loyal Jeep owner for the past 25 years with at least seven (7) vehicles. This one is the most problem plagued vehicle of them all, with major electrical/computer problems. I did not list all the problems (electrical and other wise ) that occurred in the first 36,000 miles for thankfully they were cover by warranty. I must say I will hard pressed to purchase another Chrysler (Jeep) product in the future. This one has to be towed into the dealership to be repaired (new tipm) before I can drive it to another dealership and hope for a good trade in!!!.

18 Starter problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2013

There seems to be thousands of cases on the internet like mine. The car won't start when cold. To get it to start, you have to try and try pushing the starter button. Eventually, it will start after 10-25 times. I'm told this is caused by a defective tipm (computer). I'm told that eventually the car won't start at all. I see this as a safety issue, as if you can't get your car started you can get into a lot of trouble if you are in harm's way. There are thousands of issues like this. The replacement part is not even available. Chrysler told me it would take 3 weeks to even get the replacement computer. That means that the car is essentially not usable for at a minimum 3 weeks. This car needs to be recalled.

19 Starter problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2013

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that upon inspection, the starter would not engage without warning. The contact also mentioned that when the fuel tank was below half full, the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician stated that the starter and the auxiliary starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 18,000.

20 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

I purchased the vehicle pre-owned with 28,000 mi on it and a year old, after a month of having it, the car would continue to have difficulty starting. Brought to dealer they couldn't diagnose. By the 3rd time they replaced starter. Car still had problems. Now a year later and out of warranty it is still occurring (especially when it is cold). . Brought back to Jeep and they now say it is the tipm and will be $1000 to fix. Eventhough this was there 3x under warranty they will not cover cost. This seems to be a major issue since part is on back order for approx 2 months and there are 100s and 100s of posts about this.

21 Starter problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2012

Similar to other complaint filed 2/13/2012. 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, problems with the key fob 3 times (4 if you include the battery dying after just over a year) whereby driver was stranded due to key fob malfunction. First time dealer thought it was a defective key fob, however, while waiting for a replacement the then currently working key fob also malfunctioned- whereby the "defective" fob was tried and it worked again. Dealer then said a computer update was the problem and that did seem to fix the problem. However, again recently key fob would not work ¿ driver entered the car with the emergency door key- pulled off the starter button and inserted the key manually to be told it was a "defective key" (or something similar). Dealer examined car, worked with manufacturer but since problem couldn't be "duplicated" they would take no further action. All incidents happened while in town of residence. However, if this occurred while traveling it could be quite a disaster and potentially put them in harms way if they were stranded in for example grand forks nd in February and there was severe weather as has been the case in the past. Numerous discussions in online forums also discuss the issue (both Jeep and Chrysler). The bottom line - this defect has resulted in our having a serious lack of trust in using this car- it could put my family in a very bad situation.
