The alternator failed without warning, catching on fire, rendering the vehicle undriveable and in need of at least a complete replacement of the ecm, alternator, ad battery, along with any repairs or replacements of wires or parts melted. It all happened within 5 minutes and miles from home. The vehicle was in motion on a highway all of the maintenance was done on time as well as a full vehicle inspectiion just a couple of weeks earlier. I could have been seriously hurt or killed.

The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shuddered and stalled. The contact restarted the vehicle and the vehicle worked as designed. Additionally, the vehicle was leaking engine oil onto the transmission. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and it was suggested that the battery, alternator and a faulty emc regulator needed to be replaced. The contact called three rivers Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram (2633 w liberty Ave, pittsburgh, PA 15216, (412)343-1200) however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000. Invalid VIN.

Cold started the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited, was in park and all the dash lights came on. It appears to be another #3 misfire, all dash lights came on, & had loss of power. Engine light blinking, check oil, low battery light, service the 4x4, and wipers all came on at once, remained on. I had the same issue in summer of 2019, then it was a #3 misfire. This time, again, the code was a #3 misfire! the summer of 2019 I had the garage replace the faulty 3 coil packs along with a new alternator which was damaged because of the bad coil packs, which fixed the issue for approximately 1 and 1/2 years. Then the issue resurfaced on christmas 2020, same problem.

Vehicle shut off when in motion at 30 mph on a city street. It was towed to a repair garage, totally dead and unmoveable. It was determined that the alternator went bad and ruined the voltage regulator, then back fed to the battery which began smoking when a jump and carry was hooked up to it.

The contact stated that after parking the vehicle in his driveway from a short distance, there was a electrical burning odor coming from the vehicle along with smoke. The contact then discovered that the coolant overflowed to the alternator without warning. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer (vision automotive group located at 920 panorama trail s , rochester, NY 14625) where it was diagnosed that the pcm failed causing the coolant to overheat and replaced the alternator, the drain tube and the battery. The vehicle was repaired. The contact was explained that the engineering of the drain tube for the coolant overflow tank was designed to be directly above the alternator and if the coolant overflows it would come in contact with the electric alternator causing a possible fire. The contact was concerned that if he would have drove a long distance his vehicle would have engulfed in flames. The manufacturer had been informed of failure and suggested the contact call NHTSA and get a service manual. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.

Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. The contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, white smoke began to emit from the engine as the battery light illuminated. After some time, the contact was able to restart the vehicle and drive it to eastchester Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram(4007 boston rd, the bronx, NY 10466). The dealer initially diagnosed the vehicle with a defective water pump and thermostat. Seeking a second opinion, the contact was then able to drive the vehicle to a nearby independent mechanic who then diagnosed the vehicle with a defective alternator. The alternator was repaired by the mechanic. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000. Upon investigation,the contact also discovered that her vehicle had been placed under NHTSA campaign number :19v813000(electrical system) however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer had not been notified of the recall. The contact had not experienced a failure. Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 75 mph, the vehicle's stereo shut off as the battery warning light illuminated. The engine then shut off soon after the initial failure and all the vehicle's warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was then towed to the contact's home. The contact's husband replaced the vehicle's alternator but the failure continued to occur. The dealer nor the manufacturer have been notified of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and towed to an independent mechanic. The contact was informed that the alternator and battery failed due to a faulty alternator. Alternator recall already exists for this 2011 production 8/2010, 3. 6 ltr. 160 amp. My battery light is on and dealer said its probably the pcm. Quoted 850 for part . My VIN doesn't show up on above recall, even though all qualifying criteria is met. Why? car will stall when battery is dead. Cant be driven at night. Disablec vet caregiver.

Burning smell and smoke from under hood while driving so I pulled into ntb service center. They immediately checked my vehicle and said that my alternator was burning and that my vehicle was unsafe to drive. Ntb replaced alternator the next day.

The battery light came on as I was driving home the other day (it happened while the vehicle was in motion), so I called the repair shop. The manager said that it meant my battery was not receiving a charge and to drive it straight in, so I did. He and I both smelled smoke from my vehicle when I arrived (approximately 15 minutes after the battery light came on). Upon inspection, he said that my alternator had shorted out and had singe marks inside and it had also overheated my battery. I am very concerned that it could have caught my car on fire (and the manager of the repair shop verified that it could have), especially since the battery connection is under the passenger seat inside the vehicle. He said the yellow discoloration (see photo, attached) was from overheating/singe marks. He and I could also both smell smoke from the alternator after it was removed from the vehicle, so it was definitely the cause of the smoke and smell (although my battery may have been smoking as well according to the repair shop manager). I do not believe that the alternator (and possibly the battery as well as a result) should have started smoking as this could have resulted in serious injuries and/or death.

While driving on 376-e in pittsburgh for about 20 minutes at about 50-mph, I smelled an electrical burning odor. The engine coolant temperature repeatedly fluctuated between 198-250 degrees. At times engine and battery warning lights would come on, but turn off as temperature went below 230 degrees. I exited the highway pulled over in a high traffic area near my home when I saw smoke coming from under the right front side of my hood. Upon opening the hood, volumes of smoke came out. And, there appeared to be a small fire inside the alternator. I poured 3 bottles of water on the very hot alternator to put out the fire. I called aaa for a tow, but after 20 minutes the alternator stopped smoking. There is a goodyear repair shop a block away-- the Jeep started, so I drove it there. And, canceled aaa. The goodyear concurred that the alternator was totally fried, so I had them replace it--($700, will provide receipt if you require it). After replacing it the Jeep would not start. I called aaa again, and had them tow it to my Jeep dealership. Told them of the incident. Now they are saying I need to replace the powertrain engine control module--($1,000), that shorted out the result of the alternator failure. I need my Jeep for work, they are replacing the ptcm on Monday. I've seen alternator recalls for some 2011-2012 Jeep Grand Cherokees and wranglers. I believe my Jeep gc should be included--#t36 and #p60.

Complete shut down: doors locked, all electrical lights flashing, no steering, or braking, no warning . Battery light came one than the system started shutting down, while I was driving trying to enter I-25 from the feeder road in walsenburg, CO. Had the Jeep towed to Toyota dealer in trinidad CO who stated the alternator had gone bad, causing the complete shut down as well as frying components in the electrical system. At this point it is costing $800. 00 plus the other components. This is the same systems that is in the Chrysler recall p60/NHTSA 14v-634 . I want to know if my Jeep is covered under this recall.

Battery light on for a few seconds and system stop working few minutes later and battery lost it charge completely and will not hold energy. Bad alternator, can not move vehicle. Waiting to be fix.

My dashboard bubbled up on passenger side, fake wood trim under dash fell off, alternator failed fried battery and computer, quadra2 suspension failing , this all at 82000 miles and after multiple recalls. I paid $40 k . Im at shop now with suspension 24 hrs after paying 1200. & Jeep in shop 8 days. The alternator failed a wk before 3. 4. 2019. Dashboard and trim occurred after warranty expired.

Stop at a gas station went to start vehicle would not start made some clicking noises open the hood smoke coming from the alternator ,alternator was extremely hot had vehicle towed come to find out alternator went to ground burned up the computer in the vehicle. Was told 2011 models have been recalled for alternators doing this very thing, dealer told me there was no recall on my vehicle for the alternator but other 2011's have been recalled for the alternator. My mechanic said the vehicle could've started on fire from it going to ground the way it did. Was at the gas pump could've turned into a major issue at a gas station. Vehicle is still at the shop have in the computer replaced today no documentation on it yet.

I was driving down the freeway at around 6:40am in the dark when sensors in my vehicle started flickering on/off, then the ambient lights inside the vehicle started flickering on/off before shutting off, then the stereo went out, then the headlights shut off, and then the entire vehicle shut off. There was no warning light that the battery was low before all of this happened. The repair shop the car was towed to said the battery was dead and wouldn't hold a charge. When they tested the alternator after replacing the batter, it was found to have zero output.

I started the Jeep up in my driveway and noticed a whining sound that changed with engine rpms. There were no lights or warnings on the dash to indicate a failure of any components. I only had to run to the store 4 miles away and thought I would look at it when I returned home. Once I got to the store, I smelt an electrical burning smell and saw smoke coming from under the hood. When I raised the hood, the alternator was producing a significant amount of smoke. I was concerned my vehicle was about to catch fire. I had some one bring me some tools so I could disconnect the battery. Once the battery was disconnected, I located a replacement alternator ($400) locally at a parts store as it was a Sunday evening and no dealers were open. I was able to replace the alternator in the store parking lot. I drove the vehicle home with no problems, but when I opened the hood to ensure all was good with the new alternator, it was once again so hot I could not touch it. There was no smoke as of yet, but it does seem that there is still an issue that caused the original alternator to catch fire. I am sure the new alternator will also be damaged if the Jeep is driven any more. Currently I am forced to leave my Jeep parked until I can ensure I have an emergency back up available. The Jeep does act normal now the alternator is changed out, and everything seems to be working as normal. I am just concerned the new alternator may fail again and cause a fire in my Jeep. Now I am scared to drive the vehicle for my normal commute. The Jeep only has 70,000 miles on it and has never had any other issues since I have owned it. I have seen this issue many time is searches online and feel that there are underlying causes that can result in vehicle failure and possible fires. Extremely unsafe to operate in this condition.

We have had problems with this car for a couple of years. We have had to replace the computer, alternator, battery, and now the tipm. This car almost caught on fire once before due to the faulty computer system. Now with the tipm malfunctioning, the car wouldn't start. The battery discharged so we would take it to get charged, the car would work for a couple of weeks then it would happen again. This last time, the car never restarted. We had the vehicle towed to the local dealership and were told that it was a faulty tipm. Jeep cherokees 2012-2014 are recalled for this!! why aren't the 2011s?.

This is the worse vehicle I have ever bought! never again! I been stranded several times. As soon as I get a jump and bring it to have it checked the mechanic states nothing is wrong with the alternator or the battery. No codes pop up as anything is wrong. I've been in a life threatening situation where my car stalled while I was driving on a main road. The only way I could get the car to work was to turn it off and start it again. Then it was fine. I called the dealership and they said they haven't heard of anything as far as recalls. That has happened at least 3 times. Another problem that I have experienced was the car accelerating on its on. I called the dealership and they were not concerned. And another problem is my passenger side window all of a sudden would get stuck. Ive had problems from day one and the dealership acts like it is no concern. As I read majority of complain is falling to electrical problems, especially with the tipm but nothing is getting done about it. I constantly check this site to see if the government is going to protect the consumers by forcing more recalls on electrical or tipm boards, but they are not doing anything about it. What is it going to take, many lives taken away over it????.

Alternator diodes experienced rapid failure disabling the vehicle while driving on city streets. Previous recall for 2012-2014 models for same reason p60/NHTSA 14v-634. We had the alternator diagnosed by upex auto supply in dallas texas and they confirmed the diode failure. Additional electrical issues ensued which are yet to be determined after the alternator was replaced.

My vehicle have been shutting off on me numerous times while I'm driving mostly when I come off the highways few times when I first start it in the morning and recently it shut down and completely died and wouldn't start back up. The battery compartment was full of water and the fuel pump doesn't cut off. I had the alternator and battery replaced thinking that's why it died but it's still not running. I've only had this vehicle for a month.

June 16,2018 I'd stop at a gas station to fill up I was inside the station for about 20 minutes playing lottery for the next morning, I only explaining for time line. Came out to pump gas and noticed my engine was smoking and I haven't been driving long, I just left a water front park which is about 5 minutes away. Well the smoke smells like burning wires but no fire just heavy smoke so I let it cool down. And the truck was dead nothing no power when the tow truck finally showed up some 10 hours later, and tried to jump start the truck it was draining the jump box. So I end up taking my Jeep to a after market repair shop and his diagnosis was that my alternator had burned up. So once I'd replaced the alternator the truck still wouldn't take a charge. After doing further research come to find out there was a recall on my alternator issue but for some reason my vehicle vett my vehicle was not on the list my VIN number is not part of the recall list mind you I bought my vehicle use I'm the second owner is a canadian vehicle but I brought it in the in michigan from a auto broker. I'm currently dealing with northland Chrysler Jeep dealership in oak park michigan and at their contacting fiat Chrysler recall team and trying to figure out if I'm having the same issues as the alternator recall I believe it's t36 why my vehicle couldn't be added to the list for my reimbursement I had call the number that I have on a Jeep app that's on my smartphone there was a recall number and it stated that 2011 chargers challengers durangos Jeep Grand Cherokee and a couple other vehicles if I'm not mistaken has the alternator failure recall it also states that you will smell heavy you will see heavy smoke, my name is michael ward my number is 248 953 4337 wardski28@gmail. Vehicle completely stopped on the road without warning indication. Road conditions were dry at 98 degree temperature while on a straight away major highway. No previous battery warning light / charging failure was indicated before the event. The vehicle was just able to get pulled to the side of the road. The vehicle was successfully towed to the nearest Jeep authorized dealer 20 miles away. Diagnosed complete alternator failure which drained the battery. The alternator and battery was replaced with new dealership Chrysler brand (mopar). When leaving the dealership just 1/2 mile down the road, the battery charging warning light came on. The vehicle made it back to the dealership on battery power. The vehicle was once again diagnosed with a faulty alternator (the new replacement). I was told that they could only replace the alternator with Chrysler indicated brand. It is known that Jeep Grand Cherokee 2012-2014 has a recall on the alternators which are same used on 2011. This Jeep has now had two replacements with less than 88 k miles on the vehicle. Recommend adding 2011 Jeep models to recall list as this is a common problem.

There was an alternator recall and my dealer is not changing it and they version is the recall is not part of it.

I'm actually sitting in a parking lot waiting for the tow truck. The Jeeps alternator began whining & the battery light came on. I pulled over and turned off the Jeep. It wouldn't restart. Has zero power. The battery was replaced in February & the alternator checked out fine. The window evidentally let itself down about a week ago. This was srrange. Wipers started by themself when I tried to jumpstart it. I've read various complaints that mirror my symptoms. It will be towed to frensley Jeep-Chrysler tonight. Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland. The contact stated that the battery warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the battery, the alternator assembly and the pcm. The alternator assembly had been extremely warm internally which had affected the pcm. The vehicle had to be turned off during the repair to further diagnose the pcm internal voltage shortage. The dealer fred beans Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram (858 n easton rd, doylestown, PA 18902, (215) 348-7500) was aware that there had been two recalls for NHTSA campaign number: 15v879000 (electrical system), 17v572000 (service brakes, service brakes, hydraulic) and had scheduled an appointment for the recall repairs for may 10, 2018. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v435000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000. Dyd.
