18 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/05/2020

I was driving on highway 26 west bound in oregon just outside of portland. My car has ecodiesel engine in it. I usually buy gas when it is about a quarter tank of fuel. I had about quarter tank of fuel and about 150 miles range left. I was on the left lane and traveling at about 60 mph. All the sudden my engine stopped instantly on the left lane of highway 26. All the cars behind me hit the brakes not to rear end me. My car's engine stopped and slowed down so quickly. It was scary. I tried to pull over to the right side of the highway. Once the car was parked, it said that battery saving mode. It would crank up but not start the engine. I called a mobile mechanic over. He checked the battery and alternator and said the battery is strong and no blown fuses whatsoever. He then went under the car and listen the fuel pump and said that it sounds very bad. He had beliefs that I had problems with my fuel system, maybe a broken fuel pump. He read the codes out of car computer and they all were related to the fuel systems. I started doing some online research and found out that Jeep Grand Cherokees has a faulty design of fuel tanks and if the fuel goes below the quarter tank level. Then pump does not work properly. Upon reading this, I called a friend who brought me 5 gallons of diesel and we put the diesel inside the tank and the car started immediately. I drove it to a near by gas station and filed up the tank full. I think this car has some sort of faulty design of fuel pump. It will cause a fatal accident if it does not get corrected by the manufacturer as soon as possible. When the engine stopped suddenly, the car actually swerved around little bit. This incident could have ended fatally if I was not quick enough. I am writing this to let you gusy know about this flaw about Grand Cherokee ecodiesels 3. 0 engines.

25 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/08/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that he heard alternator whine sound while driving at 50 mph. The contact pulled the vehicle into a gas station parking lot. The contact could not get the vehicle to shift out of neutral gear and would shut off. The contact put on the emergency brake on and opened the hood and he saw fire coming out of the alternator along with smoke as the vehicle ran for another five minutes. The flames turned into smoke with the alternator burning up. The computer, the battery and other systems may have been damaged by the flames. The vehicle had a recall repair for this issue done back in 2017. The contact suspects that the recall repair did not replace the alternator from that previous repair. The vehicle was taken to the dealer astorg Jeep (1601 13th st, parkersburg, wv 26101 304-485-5555). The dealer ordered a new computer, an alternator and a battery. The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle was repaired. The contact was explained that the engineering of the drain tube for the coolant overflow tank was designed to be directly above the alternator and if the coolant overflows it would come in contact with the electric alternator causing a possible fire. The contact was concerned that if he would have drove a long distance his vehicle would have engulfed in flames. The manufacturer had been informed of failure and suggested the contact call NHTSA and get a service manual. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.

28 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/25/2020

I was driving down the road and all of a sudden all the lights on the dash lit up and then the vehicle completely shut down, with no power. This happened while I was driving, so thank god it happen late when there was no traffic. I immediately smelled electrical burning and there was absolutely no power to the vehicle. I had to have the vehicle towed to the dealership. The dealership determined that the alternator burned up and damaged the battery. This exact issue is recall t36 but Jeep states that that recall does not apply to my vehicle because I have a 220amp alternator. Obviously, if my vehicle experienced the exact same symptom that the t36 recall is for, the 220amp alternator is also affected. The initial repair cost me $1500. A month later I had to have another repair for $3000, due to electrical issues, where the parking assist and blind spot assist modules went out, along with a headlamp motor assembly. It has been 3 months since that repair and now I have more electrical issues. The check engine light has come on again and I get a service 4wd system, the heat is intermittent, and my temp gauge doesn't move. I have been emailing back and forth with Jeep customer care but they just keep saying that the t36 alternator issue doesn't apply to my vehicle.

30 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/30/2020

Current issue - while waiting in a fast food line the battery light came on. . . After receiving food - I pulled into a parking spot and before I could turn the vehicle off, it started giving off error codes related to various electrical items not being available - first warning - svc. Air suspension - second - blind spot detection not available - third evic error - fourth - adaptive cruise not available. . . Then died and smelt like burning rubber when I exited the vehicle. . . A failed effort by roadside service to jump the vehicle did manage to turn on the windshield wipers which wouldn't turn off but that's all that accomplished so I had roadside service put it on a flatbed and tow it to my house since nothing was opened and I didn't want to leave it somewhere with the windows down (of course they wouldn't roll up). . . Pretty clearly this should be part of the t39 alternator recall that was issued due to bad diodes which cause the alternator to fry the electrical components with very little warning. . . The car should die and then the replacement of the alternator should rectify the situation. . . Not - the light comes on - the car immediately dies - and then you need a new pcm or ecm and all new wiring. . . Issue #2 - the suspension has been a total fiasco accumulating $13,000 in dealer assessments not under warranty - the whole system has gone out within 80,000 miles and even after replacing 2 air struts - 2 upper control arms - the tie rods end links - and the cv axles - and the compressor - it still sounds like a rickety bucket of junk. . . When driving - always. Issue #3 - the water pump continuously fails. - not sure if when driving but one would suspect that to be the case.
