38 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/08/2019

I was driving to work one morning, when I began to smell something burning. I then saw smoke coming from under the hood. I immediately pulled over, on the side of the street, turned the vehicle off, and popped the hood. I saw that the alternator was literally on fire! it then, burned out and began to smoke. I then, disconnected the battery and called a tow truck. Needless to say, I had to replace the alternator. I thought this was random, until I saw the issue online. I contacted the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep dealership where I purchased the vehicle, but they said they knew nothing of this issue. Can I be reimbursed for the purchase of the replacement alternator?.

40 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/12/2019

I have had continual electrical problems with my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015. I have replaced both the battery and alternator because of Jeep to not starting in the morning. However, approximately 3 months later, I am once again experiencing the same problem. The mechanics cannot resolve the problem. They all say it is probably related to the voltage regulator or computer system.

Ah.

42 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/31/2019

My 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee's alternator died. The battery light came on while pulling into the driveway and the next morning the Jeep was dead. It is covered under the t36 recall. The pcm went as well and is supposedly also covered under the recall. However, the battery was also damaged and destroyed. This situation could have caused a fire. The dealer, bob mariano Jeep dealer, at 146 manchester st, concord, nh 03301 tells me that I am responsible for replacing the battery. This cost should not be placed on the customer. The battery should be paid for by the dealer. The battery was damaged because of the faulty alternator, so was the pcm which is being covered. The short circuit that occurred in the alternator caused both the battery and pcm to die. So why should I pay for a new battery? the dealer is going to charge me $332. 50 for the battery plus $119. 90 to install the battery. The same mopar battery goes for approximately $230. 00. Again, the difference in price is appalling.

43 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Burning smell and smoke from under hood while driving so I pulled into ntb service center. They immediately checked my vehicle and said that my alternator was burning and that my vehicle was unsafe to drive. Ntb replaced alternator the next day.

44 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/07/2019

The battery light came on as I was driving home the other day (it happened while the vehicle was in motion), so I called the repair shop. The manager said that it meant my battery was not receiving a charge and to drive it straight in, so I did. He and I both smelled smoke from my vehicle when I arrived (approximately 15 minutes after the battery light came on). Upon inspection, he said that my alternator had shorted out and had singe marks inside and it had also overheated my battery. I am very concerned that it could have caught my car on fire (and the manager of the repair shop verified that it could have), especially since the battery connection is under the passenger seat inside the vehicle. He said the yellow discoloration (see photo, attached) was from overheating/singe marks. He and I could also both smell smoke from the alternator after it was removed from the vehicle, so it was definitely the cause of the smoke and smell (although my battery may have been smoking as well according to the repair shop manager). I do not believe that the alternator (and possibly the battery as well as a result) should have started smoking as this could have resulted in serious injuries and/or death.

45 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/07/2019

While driving on 376-e in pittsburgh for about 20 minutes at about 50-mph, I smelled an electrical burning odor. The engine coolant temperature repeatedly fluctuated between 198-250 degrees. At times engine and battery warning lights would come on, but turn off as temperature went below 230 degrees. I exited the highway pulled over in a high traffic area near my home when I saw smoke coming from under the right front side of my hood. Upon opening the hood, volumes of smoke came out. And, there appeared to be a small fire inside the alternator. I poured 3 bottles of water on the very hot alternator to put out the fire. I called aaa for a tow, but after 20 minutes the alternator stopped smoking. There is a goodyear repair shop a block away-- the Jeep started, so I drove it there. And, canceled aaa. The goodyear concurred that the alternator was totally fried, so I had them replace it--($700, will provide receipt if you require it). After replacing it the Jeep would not start. I called aaa again, and had them tow it to my Jeep dealership. Told them of the incident. Now they are saying I need to replace the powertrain engine control module--($1,000), that shorted out the result of the alternator failure. I need my Jeep for work, they are replacing the ptcm on Monday. I've seen alternator recalls for some 2011-2012 Jeep Grand Cherokees and wranglers. I believe my Jeep gc should be included--#t36 and #p60.

The contact was unable to restart the vehicle or shift the gear selector into neutral or park. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the battery was overcharged by a defective alternator. The vehicle was not repaired. Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram fiat of south savannah (located at 8701 abercorn st, savannah, GA 31406, (912) 925-0400) and the manufacturer were contacted by phone and informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,920.

47 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/26/2019

Complete shut down: doors locked, all electrical lights flashing, no steering, or braking, no warning . Battery light came one than the system started shutting down, while I was driving trying to enter I-25 from the feeder road in walsenburg, CO. Had the Jeep towed to Toyota dealer in trinidad CO who stated the alternator had gone bad, causing the complete shut down as well as frying components in the electrical system. At this point it is costing $800. 00 plus the other components. This is the same systems that is in the Chrysler recall p60/NHTSA 14v-634 . I want to know if my Jeep is covered under this recall.

48 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

50 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/23/2019

My 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland started to smoking from the alternator and burned up almost catching fire. There was a recall that they only looked at the alternator never replacing it. I want to know more about this recall, I want to be contacted in regards to this faulty part that almost caught my Jeep on fire. I feel this part should have been replaced. The Jeep was running stationary when it started whistling and making a bad noice. Once I started to drive it to auto zone it got worse and started smoking, making a loud whistling sound and choking like it was going to die. When I pulled into auto zone it was smoking bad, smelt electric burning and it was all coming from the alternator. I had to have it towed 60 miles back home and another 12 miles to the dealership that next Monday morning because this happened on a Sunday when everything was closed. If it's a recall I want it replaced, tow paid for and the time it's been out of commission.

51 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2013 grand Jeep cherokee. The contact stated that the power train control module and alternator failed. 52 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/09/2019

No low battery warning light, only show a warning if alternator is bad and not charging battery. Thus, car can stop without warning due to low battery because of wear and needing replacement- without warning. When this happens, everything in car works on electricity can cause a very bad accident if stops in traffic. Also, with no key override when the car electrical module will not read to the key fob if you are in or out of the car you can not open doors or windows or turn on or off anything, if doors/windows locked when this happens this is very dangerous-no way to get out or in. If stuck in the desert without help and car module stops picking up key fob one is sol. Lots of complaints online. Very unhappy with the fact that Chrysler creates recalls only for a select few when they know that they continue to use the same faulty technology on most of their cars they build. My rear door module stopped working and I had to replace it and it cost me over $500. When going online I see that Chrysler had a recall for this problem for older models but would not cover the newer years although they used the same faulty technology on them as well. Fortunately, I had just parked my car in the garage and did not lock the doors so we could still get in it and have it towed.

55 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/31/2019

An issue relating to electrical or power train causes the vehicle to stall and remain in a no start condition. Without warning, the vehicle is completely without electrical power while driving and the vehicle becomes unable to be controlled. This vehicle was manufactured 9/2018, purchased 12/18. This incident happened while driving the vehicle on the interstate at a speed of 45-55 mph on 5/31/18 and again while driving at 30-40 mph on a city street on 10/18/19. Both of these incidents were terrifying and thankfully we were not involved in an accident. The only service that has been performed (oil changes and these two issues) was completed by the dealership where it was purchased. Both times the vehicle failed, the dealership discovered that the master fuse was "blown" and the replaced it. This is an unsafe vehicle that I am now forced to pay for and drive myself and my children around in not knowing when it will shut off and I will no longer be able to control the vehicle or move from the flow of traffic. When calling the manufacturer, I was told that the recall number u87 / NHTSA id 18v524000 did not include my VIN number although the description is exactly the same. This recall explains that the dealer should replace the powertrain control module because it may be equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail causing a stall or no start condition and potentially causing the vehicle to stall while driving and cause a risk of crash. Yet, the dealership is unwilling to do anything to resolve the issue because the recall does not include this VIN. The manufacturer refuses to acknowledge this issue and this is my only recourse until the issue happens two more times, I survive being in an inoperable moving vehicle and can file for lemon law rights.

59 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/12/2019

While in motion, on my way work, my 2014 Grand Cherokee summit with 3. 0 l turbo diesel engine, 220 amp alternator and 49000 miles experienced a loss of power steering, battery light came on, voltmeter showed no charging of battery. My electronic indicator system stated the vehicle went into battery saver mode with a loss of abs, heating and ventilation, air suspension system, all safety enhancements such as park sense, no electronic transmission system changes and check engine light came on. There was a recall on gasoline engine 2014 Grand Cherokees along with others (Chrysler recall t36) and I have seen another complaint similar to mine sharing the same engine on this sight. I do believe this is was caused by catastrophic alternator failure. A new battery was installed and the battery light is still on and still in battery saver mode( an indicator also of no charging) and volmeter indicates no charging. I will be replacing the alternator tomorrow.

60 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/24/2019

Red indicator light looking like a battery came on about 3 miles from destination. Within another mile, other warning lights began to come on. Wipers came on (yes, they came on, not off). Then navigation screen went blank. Next car lost all power while driving. Suddenly lost steering, brakes, etc. Even emergency flashers would not activate. Smelled like something was burning. Nearby repair shop stated the alternator had burned-up and killed the battery. Repair shop replaced alternator and battery, but warning light came on again with smell of something once again burning within 2 miles of repair shop. Returned vehicle to repair shop, but they are not capable of fixing some type of computer module. This vehicle had a safety recall (number t36). I received at least 2 notices from Jeep (fca), but in each case was told parts were not available to resolve this safety recall (alternator diode thermal fatigue) [t36/NHTSA 17v-435]. I also brought the vehicle to jeff wyler Jeep Chrysler (southgate, ky) where I purchased the vehicle and they said parts were not available to resolve the problem. I was told they would notify me when parts become available, but never received any notification. Now, the car suddenly lost all power while driving as described above. Had this happened at night, on the highway, someone could easily have been killed. In summary, when vehicle came to a complete stop, without power, it was on a city street, and I was making a turn onto a smaller street with the hope of getting out of traffic.

61 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/18/2019

I was driving down the freeway at around 6:40am in the dark when sensors in my vehicle started flickering on/off, then the ambient lights inside the vehicle started flickering on/off before shutting off, then the stereo went out, then the headlights shut off, and then the entire vehicle shut off. There was no warning light that the battery was low before all of this happened. The repair shop the car was towed to said the battery was dead and wouldn't hold a charge. When they tested the alternator after replacing the batter, it was found to have zero output.

62 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/10/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off and could not be restarted. The vehicle was towed to tri-star Jeep Chrysler (1260 n center Ave, somerset, PA 15501, PA) where it was diagnosed that the alternator was faulty and needed to be replaced. The alternator, battery, and power train control module were replaced. The failure was remedied. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 166,000.

63 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/06/2019

I started the Jeep up in my driveway and noticed a whining sound that changed with engine rpms. There were no lights or warnings on the dash to indicate a failure of any components. I only had to run to the store 4 miles away and thought I would look at it when I returned home. Once I got to the store, I smelt an electrical burning smell and saw smoke coming from under the hood. When I raised the hood, the alternator was producing a significant amount of smoke. I was concerned my vehicle was about to catch fire. I had some one bring me some tools so I could disconnect the battery. Once the battery was disconnected, I located a replacement alternator ($400) locally at a parts store as it was a Sunday evening and no dealers were open. I was able to replace the alternator in the store parking lot. I drove the vehicle home with no problems, but when I opened the hood to ensure all was good with the new alternator, it was once again so hot I could not touch it. There was no smoke as of yet, but it does seem that there is still an issue that caused the original alternator to catch fire. I am sure the new alternator will also be damaged if the Jeep is driven any more. Currently I am forced to leave my Jeep parked until I can ensure I have an emergency back up available. The Jeep does act normal now the alternator is changed out, and everything seems to be working as normal. I am just concerned the new alternator may fail again and cause a fire in my Jeep. Now I am scared to drive the vehicle for my normal commute. The Jeep only has 70,000 miles on it and has never had any other issues since I have owned it. I have seen this issue many time is searches online and feel that there are underlying causes that can result in vehicle failure and possible fires. Extremely unsafe to operate in this condition.

64 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/29/2018

Alternator failed due to recall. I was not notified of this until after having failed and needing to be towed after being stranded on the side of the road in the middle of the night. All the cars functions had completely failed. The car was unable to be moved to a safe place, doors were locked, leaving my dogs locked and gated into the cargo area until lowing assistance arrived. Since the alternator was fixed I have had multiple visits to the dealership for replacement of battery, Jeep failing two more times while driving down the road, needing additional towing assistance. Multiple electrical malfunctions continue to occur, including: forward collision warning, "brake warning flashing for no apparent reason. The passenger side heat failed needing to be replaced. All of the seat heaters within the vehicle have failed needing to be replaced. Most recently the drivers seat move forward function has stopped working, make the vehicle difficult and unsafe to drive as it is not at the appropriate drive distance. Contact to dealer to discuss fixing issues as they are electrical and most likely due to recall of the alternator. Jeep dealer declined that it was a related issue and that Jeeps are known for these issues. Car is felt to be unreliable and unsafe to continue to drive at this point with the unknown reasons and causes for the recurrent malfunctions.

65 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

I am having to replace an alternator on this vehicle for sudden failure. Currently there is a recall for exact condition but my VIN is outside of recall limits. I feel my vehicle should be included as exact conditions exist. .

66 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/26/2018

While driving locally on a city street, heard a low whining sound, followed by the dashboard battery warning light being illuminated. Sound increased and decreased with vehicle speed. Drove immediately home, less than a mile, parked the vehicle, opened the hood and isolated the location of the whining sound to the alternator area. At this time I could also smell a burning odor (being an electrician). I put a meter to the battery terminals and recorded a voltage of 11. 5,indicating that the alternator had failed. There were no visible signs of smoke that I could see as the time was about 9pm. But the smell of an electrical issue was clearly present.

67 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/07/2018

I have a brand new lease and my alternator has to be replaced. The battery is not being charged, the dome lights and headlights dim intermittently while driving or parked. 69 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/30/2018

After 3. 5 years of no problems, our Jeep has been back to the dealer service every month since August 2018. Currently at service since 1/14/19, 15 business days. In August: pulled into a parking spot and the wipers started, could not turn them off different messages flashed no bus, and various other msgs. Check engine light was on. Took in to dealer the next day. Recalls were performed. We felt, our problems had been solved. They were not. September: arrived at my son's school 7:15 a. M. Wipers started, chiming started, messages flashed, tire pressure flashed. Turned engine off, restarted problem solved. October: on baltimore beltway with my son's carpool in the car, we were in rush hour traffic crawling along. . . Wipers start, chiming, messages flashing service electronic throttle control and others. . . Then car started lurching and lunging somehow got it limping into the dealer. . . Podded it and it threw over 480 codes. In service for 10 days. Alternator replaced, did not help. November: arrived home after an 1. 5 hour trip, chiming started, messages flashed. But this time as I reversed into driveway, car threw itself into park. December: again driving car pool of young teenagers, exited baltimore beltway, wipers start, chiming, messages, service electronic throttle, auto park disabled, service shifter, etc. Engine revving but we're barely moving. There was nowhere to safely pullover and I have no idea if any of the exterior lights are working. I had to make a lady turn to get out of traffic. We barely made it. This last episode was the last straw. Our dealer's service department has been nothing but helpful. They have, with my permission driven the vehicle with diagnostic equipment hooked up, they've put over 600miles on my vehicle, but I don't care because I'd like it fixed. They've tried to replicate for 15+ days w/no success. I do not feel safe in this car.
