6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/17/2011

Esm- electronic shift module issue: p, r, n, d, l all light up simultaneously and the car gets confused as to which gear it should be using. Occasionally, the check engine light comes and goes. After reversing, I put it in drive and it shifts roughly. Randomly the car loses power driving down the street. I had the esm replaced and a month later is showing a u404 code.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/21/2011

Vehicle is 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and currently has 18300 miles and was purchased new in Jan. 2008. Two failure to accelerate problems have occurred. One on 5/31/10 and another on 04/21/11. In both instances the vehicle would not shift into the next gear and the speed could not exceed 30 to 35 mph even with the accelerator pressed all the way to the floor. The problem occurred without any warning. After the first occurrence the dealer replaced the bezel shift selector. After the second occurrence the dealer could not determine what the problem was. Merging onto a busy freeway where traffic speeds routinely exceed 80mph and not being able to accelerate beyond 30-35 mph is a serious safety problem which could result in injury or death. The same safety concerns apply if the vehicle suddenly decelerates from 70 to 30 mph.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/19/2011

The dash indicators for the gear shift will all illuminate at the same time and the vehicle will go into neurtal. This has happened three or four times. The last time it occured while traveling on the expressway, fortunately I was able to get it back in gear after taping the shift lever several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they said they replaced a electonic shift module. They kept the old part that was removed.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/16/2011

When putting transmission into drive, the vehicle will not accelerate, this problem first occured at approx 31,000 miles. The dealership replaced the shift control module. The proble went away. Then again at 62,000 miles, when pulling into traffic, the vehicle started to accelerate, then lost power. Another vehicle had to swerve to miss me, I would have been hit in the drivers door had he not swerved. My vehicle would not move, after cycling the ignition key , the problem went away, took to dealer they told me that the same shift control module needs to be replaced (again) for 750. 00. The vehicle is unsafe to drive and I am shocked that someone has not been killed by this issue as there are hundreds of reports of this on the internet. This is absolutely a manufacturing defect as it has happened on a wide number of identical vehicles with the same repair being performed only to have the problem repeat itself.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/19/2011

Vehicle has lost power while driving. You will be crusing along or pulling out into an intersection and you will loose all power. The engine will not rev, no response at all. After waiting for a perion of time, the vehicle starts going again. This happened to me four times, once in the middle of an intersection, four lanes in all directions, and the vehicle just lost all power. Very scary. I took the vehicle to my local garage, and he told me that this was the second Jeep to do the same thing. The owner had to have the vehicle towed into the garage, and upon arrival, could find nothing wrong. I had to go to an authorized Jeep dealer, and I asked them if they ever heard of this happening, and the reply was, just 3 or 4 times. . . . Imaging if this failure happened this often in this small area, how many other vehicles may be having the same problem. The vehicle only had 31000 miles on it, but it was out of warranty for time by 9 months. This is a very dangerous event when you are driving and suddenly loose all power and don't know if or when it is coming back. Chrysler said they do not have a problem. I don't believe them.

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/04/2011

Starting at around 55,000 miles while I would be driving my Jeep, the car would stop moving but the engine would rev as I pushed on the pedal. I would not be able to go in drive, neutral or reverse. I would have to put the car in park and turn off the vehicle, wait a few seconds then restart the car. I have had my car at my mechanics as well as a Jeep dealership, a total of 5 times, now ready to go back in for the 6th time. Each time I am told the problem is fixed and a day or 2 later it happens again. When I call to let the mechanic know I am having the problem again, I am then told that neither they nor the dealership know what the problem is and to bring it back in. Leaving me without a car for days. I have spent a lot of money on this vehicle and do not want to spend thousands more fixing a problem that is not fixable. I have 2 small children, and fear that somebody is going rear end the car when is just stops. I have contacted the manufacturer of Jeep and was told only "certain" 2006 Jeeps were under recall, mine was not one. All I could do was make a complaint. So I made a verbal and now written complaint, hoping something gets done.

12 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/03/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 35 mph, smoke was present underneath the hood. When the contact stopped the vehicle in order to inspect it fire was under his feet, under the hood and the entire under carriage of the vehicle. The contact was able to remove a child passenger from the vehicle without any injuries. The fire department arrived to assist with extinguishing the fire. An investigator with the manufacturer took pictures of the vehicle three weeks ago and the contact had not received a follow up call. The insurance company provided the contact with a copy of the recall notice and stated that they were unable to assist him since the failure was mechanical. The contact stated that the vehicle was not completely destroyed but it was severely damaged. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. Case # 20554289 was filed with the manufacturer. The manufacturer did not confirm if his VIN was a part of NHTSA recall 05v396000, power train automatic transmission although the failure was identical. The failure mileage was 115,000.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/19/2011

When my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee is in drive, there is a loss of power. The check-engine light comes on, and it's as if the car doesn't know whether it's in drive, neutral, reverse, etc. The dealer says I need a electronic shift module to the tune of $600+. After looking into this, I see it is a problem with many Jeep Grand Cherokees. I am looking into getting Jeep to take responsibility for the faulty part.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/09/2011

While stuck on ice in our driveway, my wife was concerened about backing down the driveway to retry getting to the house, she had the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee in park, I went to assist in backing down the driveway, she hopped over the console and hit the gearshift with her leg or foot the Jeep gearshift then went from park, into reverse without the brake being depressed as is the design, the Jeep rapidly went backwards the open door "scooping me toward the underside of the Jeep, I was able to roll away from the Jeep, my wife then got into the driver seat and put into park just before crashing into the wooded area along our driveway. A check of the interlock sytem showed it was and still is non working. This incident could have been met with tragic results had I not been able to roll away from the underside of the moving Jeep, and had my wife been unable to stop the Jeep when she did. As a result I have sustained pain to my lower back, and my wife to her cervical spine.

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact was driving approximately 30 mph when the vehicle would no longer accelerate and came to a stop. The check engine light was illuminated and the steering wheel became abnormally stiff. The contact was able to move the vehicle to the side of the road and turned the ignition off. When the contact restarted the vehicle, the vehicle jerked but the contact was able to drive the vehicle to his residence. The failure persisted at least sx times and the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician advised that the transmission module control would need replacing. 19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 38,000 miles on it. It has stalled out several times when trying to accelerate almost resulting in a few accidents. I was told the electronic shift module needs to be replaced, which has been a recurring problem for a large number of Jeeps this year-make-model. The part alone costs over $700 and is on national back order for over a month. There absolutely needs to be a recall. . . . This is a serious safety hazard and absolutely ridiculous!!.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/16/2010

When manually trying to shift my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee from 3rd to 4th gear the rpms just keep going up and doesn't go into gear the dealership fix this problem 3 times already their seems to be no end in sight, I have talked to many other Jeep people online and it seems to be a problem with many others with the 3. 7 v6 4x4 its a big deal when your driving on the l. 22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/17/2010

When driving my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo the lights around the pnd21 will circle all of the gears and either go into neutral or 1st gear on its own while you are driving it, it happens at least 2-3 times a week. It is very dangerous when you are driving down the road - have taken to dealer said it needs electronic shift module at a cost of $750. Called customer service Jeep they said they couldn't help with the cost of repair. I have looked into this problem and it seems that there a lot of these same 2006 Jeeps with the same problem. They said my Jeep has to many miles 85,000 - but it seems like it happens to call Jeeps no mater what the mileage - I think this is a defective part and they should make it right - now matter how many miles. This is a very dangerous problem. I have almost been in 3 accidents due to this problem.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

My Jeep was parked facing down a hill in a parking lot. I went to get into it, started it and then exited the vehicle as it was hot and I was letting the ac get going. As I exited the vehicle it started to roll down the hill and proceeded to hit 2 parked cars , jump a curb throwing my sister in law out as she was not all the way in then continued down the hill until it hit a tree and stopped. I never took it out of park and when we got to it the gear shift was in neutral. My sister suffered a broken clavicle, torn ligaments in her knee, severely bruised ribs and pelvis and my Jeep is totaled. Apparently this is not a new problem as I have been doing my research. When will this be stopped and how many more people have to die or be injured?.

24 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/02/2010

While parallel parking, with my right foot on the brake pedal, I shifted the automatic transmission out of reverse. Immediately the engine rapidly revved up and lurched forward. I pressed more firmly on the brake, causing the car (a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee) and motor to pause, then the motor rapidly revved up again, overcoming braking. Horrified, and unable to stop the car, I watched as the car raced into the vehicle ahead of me. Immediately after the impact, the engine returned to normal idle. I then checked the car: cruise control was off, my hands were still gripping the steering wheel in order to provide additional leverage for my foot on the brake pedal, my right foot was still firmly in the middle of the brake pedal and not near the accelerator pedal, and the gear shift lever was in neutral. The vehicle ahead of me sustained damage to its bumper and tailgate. This is the 4th time this has happened with this vehicle, the first two of which were reported to you earlier. In all three earlier cases, I was able to barely avoid an accident, but not this time. As noted earlier, the Jeep mechanic was not able to find any causative problem.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The engine was turned off and restarted. The vehicle resumed normally without the warning light illuminated. The failures occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on three occasions and they were unable to determine the cause of failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the gear shifter module was replaced. The failure recurred two times after the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.

26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/17/2010

Rubber/plastic piece that rides along when shifting became bunched up and couldn't shift into park or drive. Had to cut out the bunched up piece as car was in middle of road. This rubber/plastic piece is part of the shifter bezel trim that keeps dust and dirt from getting into the shifter area. Nothing has been done as dealer wants $720. 00 for the part plus labor!!??!!?? this is ludicrous!!!!!!.

27 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/29/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Grand Cherokee. While driving at a speed of 40 mph, the vehicle seemed as if it would shift gears on its owns. The contact noticed the problem eight times. The vehicle was taken to both a local dealership and a local repair shop to find the cause for failure. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 79,000.

28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

Driving at highway speed in drive, transmission downshifted into 4th gear without manual assistance. Pulled over to side of road and attempted to shift back into drive unsuccessfully. I then shifted into park and back into drive. Dashboard indicator said the transmission remained in 4th even though the shifter was in drive. Shut vehicle off and then restarted the engine. I then put the vehicle into drive and resumed my trip. Also, on a second occasion, driving with transmission in drive, starting from a stop, transmission downshifted into 1st gear. Pulled over and shut off engine and restarted. Put transmission into drive and resumed trip with no further problem.

29 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4 problem: dangerous shifter module defect to whom it may concern: last week, my wife was bringing our children to school, and upon leaving the driveway, the transmission jumped, the car jerked back dangerously into the open street, and all of the lights illuminated on the dash (p, n, r, d). Fortunately for us, she was able to return the car to the drivway, unharmed. Living on a busy street, we are very lucky that it happened without any accident/injury. As this is the second time something like this has happened, I am now afraid to let her drive this car any longer, upon contacting Jeep/Chrysler, I was told that they would not be able to cover this safety repair (approx. Cost is $1025. Oo w/tax,parts,labor). I am downright frustrated, angry, and fearful. After reading scores of ofher similar complaints about the shifter module on reputable sites like edmunds. Com, my frustration with Chrysler has increased. They simply won't concede that there is a dangerous safety flaw with the shifter in the vehicle. Please, any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. [xxx].

31 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

I recently purchased a newer model used vehicle that has started to present some serious concerns that the dealership where I purchased it cannot figure out the problem and discounts my complaint. My vehicle's motor acts as if is going to stall on take off from a stop position. I have attempted on 3 separate occasions to have the problem serviced by the dealership's service department; however, the dealership tells me they have no concerns with the vehicle. Although the problem is not presenting itself when I bring it to the dealership, it is happening more often now than in the beginning of the vehicle's purchase that I know the problem is escalating. I cannot figure out what "triggers" this event except that when it does happen, my two young children are in the vehicle. A new issue also has presented itself. On July 4, as we were traveling down a narrow road aligned by trees, the vehicle down shifted so hard it cause the vehicle to accelerate and forcibly jerk; however, we immediately regained control of the vehicle. My abs, esp and bas lights are displayed and I have an appointment with the dealership to have this serviced for Tuesday, July 6, at which tme I will also ask them to perform another inspection/service my stalling motor issue as well as the new accelerating/jerking issue.

32 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

Today while driving on a highway at approximately 35-40mph my vehicle stalled. I had come to a complete stop and was awaiting a traffic light change. When the light changed and I stepped on the accelerator the vehicle began to hesitate and jerk and the esp/bas light, malfunction indicator light (check engine) and a message stating transmission over temp came on. I was in the left lane and immediately put on my flashers. The driver behind realized that I was in trouble and put on his as well. After I was able to roll to the shoulder, I immediately turned the vehicle off. After waiting approximately 5mins, I restarted the vehicle and continued to drive slowly and carefully to my office since I was just 2 blocks from work. This experience scared me because had this happened while I was driving at the 60-65 mph rate on this very busy highway, I could have been hurt. After reading several of the other complaints, I can also relate to the complaint about the tires having had to replace a broken stem after owning the vehicle only 2 days and I currently still have water leaking into my vehicle on raining days on the passenger side and now through the lights. I drive on the highway daily and after today's stall out, I am afraid to drive this vehicle. I called the dealership today and explained my issues and told the service manager about all of the lights and he told me the car was probably cold and if the lights don't go out I can bring it in on Saturday. Well today is Wednesday and I will not drive that car again. Since the dealership is quite a distance from my home, I will have the car towed so that it can be checked out. I am very uncomfortable with the idea of ever driving this vehicle again. I transport children as part of my job from time to time and I could never forgive myself if something was to happen to them while we are riding in this vehicle.

33 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/18/2009

At a stop sign, short of the cross walk, with foot on brake pedal car in drive waiting for traffic to clear so I can turn right on to the primary street. Remove foot from brake and 2006 Jeep cherokee begins to move backwards. The is no incline or decline at this stop sign to allow for gravity to move car. Had to re-apply brake, put car into park. Shut off and restarted before proceeding. This same difficulty has now happened on at least 6 different occasions and dealer reports no mechanical issue evident to cause auto to move on its own in reverse. Yesterday, in the omaha world herald paper a story appeared describing an accident with a 2005 Jeep cherokee.

Failure Date: 11/26/2009

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls at high speeds and intermittently while driving. Dealer unable to fix thus far ( has car for almost 30 days). In addition, same thing happened on my 2007 model and has happened to a number of people I know with Jeep Grand Cherokees. Internet is filed with reports of same events happening at random. Mine stalled at 65 mph - all electric, radio, flashers, everything just goes out. Very scary and very unsafe. Please evaluate.
