1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with recall for the floor shifter. Customer states that the dealer never informed him of a recall on his vehicle for the floor shifter since it was put in place in 2002. The consumer stated there is a clicking noise coming from the steering and the mechanic recommended the clock spring be replaced. The consumer stated the cv joints had to be replaced. The consumer received a second opinion about the cv joints and was told it was related to the viscous coupler being worn which was the real problem. The dealer stated minor driver side valve leak, rear main seal seeping, and rear viscous coupler was worn with noticeable hopping felt in the vehicle.

Just disgusted with the number of repairs I have needed to make to this vehicle. In the last six years the following repairs have been done:
brakes replaced 3 times and need to be done again
door window motor
cooling fan, radiator
evaporator coils
hood lifters-hood will not stay up
drivers door clunks
starter
compressor
leaking axle seals
and now I have a cracked head on the engine. The Jeep just failed out of the blue. Glad I was close to home. This vehicle is a lemon. Buy american again--most likely not. Are our "american" vehicles being built with inferior parts? or are they programmed to be obsolete within a few years?.

I bought a 1999 Grand Cherokee 4x2 with 55000 miles and now it has 93000 and I have noticed a buzz from the rear that has progressed to a howl or whine. I took it to a local shop and I was told that I need it a complete overhaul of the rear axle and that it would cost me anywhere from $1300 to $1600 to have it done and that most likely it would happen again because even the new ones fail too. I know I am not the only one having this problem since I did a little bit of research and found that other people with even less miles on their Jeeps are having this problem too. How can a car with less than 100 thousand miles or less has this kind of problems? how come there is not a recall on this matter? why are we not holding Chrysler company responsible for this? is there anything that I can do to have the dealer fix their mistakes? thank you.
We bought a 1999 Grand Cherokee limited Jeep, all wheel drive. After many, many unsuccessful repairs, I am still unable to drive this vehicle due to front drive train as well I can?t hear myself talk due to the whining noise the rear end makes. I have done extensive research on the internet and there is wealth of web pages dedicated to Jeep owners with the same exact problems. It is no doubt a factory yet they turn a blind eye. We are looking for a group that has possible filed a class action suite, could you help us. We don?t know what else to do.
I had taken my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee into a very dependable and honest repair shop in san antonio TX for an issue and while they test drove the vehicle they noted a noise from the rear of the vehicle. Of course, I assumed this was rode noise and didn't think anything of it. They informed me that it was a common issue with that model of vehicle. This was during the week of June 2004. The main problem is that I purchased the vehicle July 4, 2001 in austin TX and I thought I purchased a 3 year extended service plan. Which should have covered it. What I found out is that I purchased a plan that extended the original cars coverage for 3 years. I ended up purchasing a contract for a period I did not own the car. The plan expired on June 10, 2004. This was very misleading by the car dealership I bought the car from and the Chrysler warranty company when I called about it during June while the car was in the repair shop. The warranty company would not cover the cost of the repair approximately $2,000 because they had previous claims on the vehicle. I feel this repair should have been covered because I purchased a three year extended warranty plan on July 4, 2001 which to me should have ended July 4, 2004 and the rear axle is a common issue with this model of vehicle. Had I known the "road noise" was really a problem coming into existence or had I paid closer attention to the warranty information when I received it this could all have been avoided. If this is not an issue you can offer any advice or assistance on please let me know. The incident date below is an approximation. I do not have the repair order in front of me with the exact dates. Your website was brought to my attention today and I wanted to get the details to you as soon as possible. If you can assist with any of the warranty work with Chrysler I can provide exact dates and policy information as necessary. Thank you.
Front axle brake rotors warped prematurely, had to cover cost out of pocket (not warranty). Also oil seal on rear axle failed, causing rear brakes to be filled with grease, about to fail prematurely (have not fixed yet, $400 job). Vehicle only has 47000 miles. Extended Chrysler warranty will not cover either.

Loud grinding sound comming from the front axle.
Service engine check light came on and dealer indicates it was due to some problem with the trans axle system related to the 4 wheel drive system which I have never used --he said the 4 wheel drive parts are constantly moving and sometimes the parts become defective.
Consumer complained about steering problems. There was a honking noise when the steering wheel was turned. Intermittently steering wheel made a popping noise while driving, especially when turning, and the steering wheel failed to go in the locked position when the vehicle was turned off. Dealership didn't know what caused these problem, but there was a technical service bulletin on each of them. Also, front drive axle made a wining noise while driving.
I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I replaced the the rear pinion bearing in April of 2001 and it needs to be replaced again. Daimler/chrystler is unwilling to work with me on the repair of this item. Have been driving for 30 years and have never repaired this on any other vehicle once, much less twice!.
Manufacturer although acknowledges problem by TSB fix will not repair because it has run out of warranty. Problem is I know over a dozen people with the same problem with many much more voicing concerns at internet Jeep related forums. No safety defect listed.
No sumnmary listed for above vehicle.
Rear axle overhaul/ rotors warped.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Seal on rear differential was leaking, had to be replaced. Front bearings were replaced. Front wheel hubs were replaced, consumer states basically, the front and rear axles were replaced.
When accelerating or breaking, noise came from rear end. Was informed that if not fixed soon that the rear end could fail resulting in a possible accident. Was informed by dealer repairing that this type of problem is a result of hauling more the the vehicle can handle. No hitch as ever been put on vehicle. Also informed that its a possible defect. Regional representitive for chyrsler\Jeep states no defect seen. Milage is way to low for this to have just happened.
Great weather, smooth road, a bottom of a hill, left rear axle broke at 60 mph causing the vehicle to spin and then roll. Left rear wheel totally separated from vehicle. Vehicle was a total loss after rolling and landing upside down.

Began rear end "roar" at 30k miles, "repaired" x 2, replaced at 43k. , Chrysler covered half of repair. Now failed again at 80k. Chrysler says, "too bad, your problem, not ours. " seems like the rear end of a $35,000 car should last longer than 30k miles. Daimler-Chrysler takes our tax dollars for the big bailout then tells its customers to drop dead.
Transfer case plug fell out while driving at 65 mph. Loss of fluid caused rear axle to break. Manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that was not covered under a recall, and it was out of warranty. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter:.
Since the brake disc rotor was recalled on my car I wondered whether any other owners had a problem with the rusting of front axle joints and calipers hanging up. Thank you!.
Researching this problem, Jeep has a history of "rear" problems. I wish I knew this before purchasing the vehicle. I can't believe a 3 yr. Old SUV with 52,000 highway miles would need an entire rear replaced. Jeep is selling junk! how often does this happen in other SUV's? I'm getting rid of this vehicle and buying a Toyota.
Recall 98 v 006 000/temporary space saver: front axle overheated due to temporary spare tire. Manufacturer was notified, and informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under that recall. Consumer found recall 98v006, but his vehicle was not included. Vent tube from the front differential was spiiting burning oil into the engine compartment.
Consumer was traveling on highwayand and rear axle broke, and she lost steering. Vehicle had to be towed th the dealership. Mechanic had to have the axle welded.
While driving on a highway rear wheels locked. Vehicle was towed to a dealer and technician said that rear axle had burned out and need to be rebuilt.
The front and rear axles broke, vehicle is also locked in 4 wheel drive. Nlm.
The front ring and pinion gears/bearings in front differential have been replaced thrice. The axle assembly has been replaced twice and an updated yoke and drive shaft also was installed. The latest failure occurred approximately 1200 miles after a new axle assembly was installed on June 20, 2000 in west bend, wisconsin. I was returning from wisconsin to californai when latest failure occurred. The current failure is similar to the previous 6 - excessive gear/bearing noise. I've contacted Chrysler customer care and a file has been established. I've contacted my current local dealer (peoples Chrysler) and requested a meeting with the district manager this issue of continuing front differential failures. I have not been contacted by district manager and I fear that I'm being "stonewalled".
Rear axle assembly was replaced, however 6 months later problem reoccurred, consumer hopes this is not a continual problem.
This vehicle has had a clunking noise in the transmission ever since I purchased it. In that time the dealership has said the noise was caused by the ring and pinion which has been replaced. It has been diagnosed as the transfer case chain being bad which was replaced. It has been diagnosed as the rear gears being bad which were replaced. It has been a "TSB" which was a ball and transmission plate valve which were replaced. They also replaced the transfer case as it was bad. Lastly, they removed and reconditioned the transmission. None of these have corrected my car. However, now that it is out of warranty they tell me for approx. $3000 they will replace the rear end as it is bad.
Rear axle howls while accelerating when warm and speeds over 40 mph.
This has been an ongoing problem, the rear axle has a whining noise at all speeds but really loud at 50 to 60 mph. I've had the dealer work on it six times the zone mechanic assisted the last two times and then they went into the frount end, there was nothing wrong with the frount axle.
