3 Driveshaft problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/22/2021

During routine visits to my neighborhood supermarket, I've noticed while driving the rpm meter was going up and down at a stand-still. Now the vehicle was maintenance regularly and I have had issues before I've replaced the egr valve, throttle position sensor, spark plugs, pcv valve, automatic transmission oil cooler, a/c compressor even replaced the crankshaft position sensor. The truck also seems to lack power either that being an old software that it is using or the overall drivetrain is just abysmal. There also seems to be a loud thud that comes from directly under the vehicle when engaging p r n & d. Either the bushings are worn or the driveshaft is worn. The truck has been multi point checked at a local cdj dealership and it passed. Also the ignition switch was replaced on a recall. Going at low rpms, I also noticed that when going from 15-30 mph there seems to be a delay in travel as the truck will seem to be lagging or wants to slow down when my foot isn't on the accelerator. When in motion, going around 60-80 mph, the vehicle seems to have a moderate shake as in it vibrates from the undercarriage into the cabin area. It will feel like you're on a rollercoaster and the vehicle is just rumbling down the road. It feels safe at times, but when the service 4wd light appears it becomes almost frightening to drive the truck as it requires more attention then any other vehicle I've encountered. Also going back to the lag, you'll hear a chain-like sound as if the differential has an issue. I've gotten most of the front-end replaced: tire-rods, ball-joints, cv-shafts/axles, struts, stabilizer links and more. Now when turning the truck, there seems to be a lack of power as well. I had the battery and alternator tested and they both came back good. I find it hard to believe that internally the truck just wasn't meant to hold up.

6 Driveshaft problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/04/2018

Car was purchased as a certified pre-owned on Feb. 2018 in preparation for our retirement vacation. We drove it locally for a couple of months and then set out cross country on may 15th. We drove to massachusetts without incident, then headed back west near the end of June. No problems until we reached idaho, where it started vi rating and making clunking g noises from the rear. We brought it in to rogers Dodge in lewiston. Their service advisor test-drive it and said, you can't drive this car, it's unsafe!" they removed the rear driveshaft and drove it again, noting that the vibration and clunking were gone. The conclusion being that the rear driveshaft was bad. They attempted to order one but found out driveshafts were on national back/order. This made me suspicious. They finally found one and had it installed about 1&1/2 weeks later. We drove home. A week or so after that we drove to California to visit family. We had accumulated about 2000mi since the new driveshaft was installed, when it started clunking again. We brought it in to lake elsinore cdjr and they diagnosed another bad driveshaft. They submitted it to Chrysler for warranty repair but Chrysler decided that the repair in idaho must have been done incorrectly, therefore no warranty. I objected to this. Once again, there was a national back order on the driveshafts. This time it took two weeks to obtain one. When they installed it, it broke while their mechanic was test-driving the car. From there, the dealership had no idea what happened, so finally they had their body shop look at it. The body shop manager said that it appeared that some minor damage had happened to the front of the car and was repaired before we bought it. However, he couldn't explain why it broke the driveshaft. I spent the last 2+ weeks pleading with Chrysler care. Now they tell me the chassis is off by 1/4" so they can't warranty it.

10 Driveshaft problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/12/2016

My drive shaft is coming apart, I understand this is one of over 100 recently having this same problem. The Jeep is unsafe to drive (vibration and knocking sounds) and the delivery time on the replacement is 3 months. Jeep are suggesting the vehicle is safe to drive while waiting for the part and therefore not providing temporary transportation until the new part comes in.

13 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/13/2006

: the contact stated while driving 35 mph through an intersection on normal road conditions, the engine stalled and could not be restarted. There were no warning lights prior to the incident. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, who diagnosed a fuel pump and fuel injection pump failure, both were replaced. After this incident, the vehicle presented transmission problems. The contact noticed a loss of power while driving 65 mph on a highway. Intermittently, the transmission made noise when shifted to second gear. The vehicle had been taken to the dealership 20 times, however no error codes identified the defect. In one of the incidents, the yellow malfunction light illuminated and the dealership identified the defect as the computer control module and the driver shaft, both were replaced, however the transmission problem persisted. The dealership determined the vehicle could not be repaired. The manufacturer was contacted who recommended to take the vehicle to a different dealership. The vehicle was not downshifting when going up hills and it would get stuck in second or third gear. The a/c and blower motor were inoperative, the dealer could not duplicate the consumers concern. The key became stuck in the ignition. All the dashboard lights were flashing, the cd player was broke. The brakes and rotors vibrated. The starter was replaced. The driveshaft and heater were replaced. The seats would not move back. The seat belts did not retract as they should. Updated 01/17/07. Updated.

14 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/04/2005

With only 10,500 miles on our leased 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited- the vehicle has spent the last 27 days in a service repair center. The issues began with a rough transmission, car sticking in 3rd gear - "limp mode" (required car to pull over, park & restart to disable limp mode), ac getting hot on acceleration with strong chemical smell, greasy oil leak on inside of cabin out of hood release opening, excessive road noise, check engine light remained on, and easy entry/exit seat not functioning. According to my ten page invoice, the service center replaced the rear drive shaft, entire transmission, almost all the modules (one of which was already replaced for fog light recall), updated firmware, a kick panel and trim on the inside of the cabin that was stained from grease leak, balanced all 4 tires, power flushed, replaced sensors. . . Amongst other things. My husband and I were informed that the ac unit was leaking into the transmission, that it was a very common problem with the Jeeps, 300s and dodges. So serious, in fact, that Chrysler may be considering a mass recall to remedy a gross oversight on their part to physically bend a dip stick to fit parts around it- causing a gap at the base of the rubber gasket that enabled water to enter trans (thro wiring harness). It took the service center 45 minutes to explain all the issues with our car & what was done to it to fix it. We've contacted a lemon law lawyer & are looking to take this to the highest level possible. For $40,000 we expect a lot more for our money!! fyi. . . Trans still rough after all repairs!!!!.

15 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/25/2005

I took possession of a new Jeep Grand Cherokee on 29 June 2005. That afternoon, when first driven above 60 mph, a front-end vibration (oscillation) was immediately evident. Actually the vibration is present at all speeds. I arranged for a service appointment at steve christy Chrysler Jeep here in tucson. My first warranty visit for the vibration problem was made on 18 July 2005. The diagnosis there was a bad tire, which I had replaced at a goodyear tire shop per instructions from this dealership. It had no effect on the vibration. I have since been in to jim click Chrysler Jeep in tucson on three occasions for a total of eight full days. The vibration persists. I was informed that I would be unable to have further repair attempts without direction from Chrysler engineering. The latest repair attempt resulted in a modification to the drive shaft by adding six weights at positions on the drive shaft. After this activity, which did not fix the vibration, I was told that the remaining vibration was " in the design". I had a local respected automotive shop evaluate the vibration and they concluded it had a problem. I asked three fellow engineers to evaluate the vibration and all concluded there was a problem. (note, one of the engineers has five years experience driving and testing vehicles professionally. ) Chrysler still claims the vibration is " in the design". The vibration is bad enough that I am afraid to take the vehicle on a road trip or tow a trailer. The vibration is at times violent and I do not know if something could break or if the oscillation could cause loss of control. I was informed by a maintenance supervisor that there were two reasons for Chrysler to take the "in the design" position. 1) there are thousands of vehicles that made it out of the factory with this problem and 2) the problem is a chassis alignment flaw and can not be repaired.

16 Driveshaft problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

17 Driveshaft problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/04/2003

Purchased a Jeep grand cehrokee last October. In December I had to have the rotors replaced within 1,000 miles of the original replacement, the rotors warped again. I replaced the rotors again in March, by July the rotors had once again warped. The brake company who replaced the rotors both times with new factory parts will not award the waranty of the rotors. They said it is a problem with the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokees and not their products. I am forced to again pay to have the rotors replaced. This is the third time in less then a year. I have never had this problem with another vehicle I have owned. In addition, the car exhibits a "stop and bump" every time the vehicle comes to a stop. I have seen this problem addressed with the drive shafts, but apparently even replacing this part, does not cause the vehicle to stop this behavior. Lastly, the vehicle is hard to shift from second to third gears. I did not expect to have this many problems with a vehicle first of all that costs this much and secondly that is so new. I am extremely dissappointed.

Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. When driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. Consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. Then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. Also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. Recall campaign; component: fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. The consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. The consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. Fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. The consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. When sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. The left outer cv boot was leaking. The engine light came on. The consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear.

19 Driveshaft problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/28/2002

Clunking and groaning when shifting; drivetrain whins at deceleration; originally, continuous drivetrain whine and loud harmonic drone at speeds over 75 miles per hour - after repairs faint/ continuous clicking noise at approximately 75-83 mph with continuous drive train whine and loud harmonic drone at speeds of 83 mph and above. Three trips to dealer for repairs to date (between July 2 and July 26) with each trip lasting approximately one week. Owner has driven vehicle for no more than 7 contiguous days without having to leave with dealership for repairs and during this "drive time" has had to make numerous trips back to the dealer in order for notification/ negotiation on repairs, diagnosis, actual repairs, etc. Purchase was made contingent upon dealership making full and complete diagnosis and repairs to drivetrain with warranty of all for a one year period; with all costs to dealer. Dealer now is attempting to back out of written agreement - however, negotiations are still being held towards repairs.

Have not rportedto dealer at this time will schedule for week of 07/16/01. Secondly, transmission shift problems: started when vehicle was brand new when stopping it felt like someone was hitting you in the rear end. First repair ,mileage 4428 consisted of tsb0300799 and replacement of rear driveshaft, also rear axle carrier and pinion bearings were replaced. Second transmission repair mileage 10453 due to harsh shiffting @ 20 mph and again when stopping it felt like someone ran into the rear of the vehicle, this time the transmission yoke was replaced and another transmission update per tsb21-09-00,also during this service the front driveshaft was replaced due to a howling noise which started around 55-60 mph, complaint three mileage 10818 vehicle still has whining noise coming from drive train. In addittion, transmission problems continue with harsh shifting at times at 20 mph and 50-55mph,these shift points worsen as other problems were being corrected, dealer claims that thhis is adaptive memory and their nothing that will be done to correct it. According to casey Jeep service manager daimlerchrysler does not see this as a problem only an issue. Fourth complaint mileage 16040 transmission continues to shift hard at times @ 20 mph and 50-55 mph. At this time dealer show no concern in correcting this problem . In summary, brake and drive train problems with this vehicle starting at 2341 miles, and they continue be on-going. I now question the safety of this vehicle.

28 Driveshaft problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/01/2000

The vehicle has now had four (4) rear ring gear and pinions, four(4) sets of rear bearings, one rear yoke, two (2) sets of front ring gear and pinions, two(2) sets of bearings, one front yoke, one front drive shaft replaced since it came from the factory. It has never been in four wheel drive or driven off road. It has had one tire replaced due to vibration that would not balance (r. Front), the electric windows have been repaired two (2) times and the transmission will not engage if the vehicle sits for 3 days or longer (has not been repaired). The dealer has been very good about doing all repairs (can not duplicate transmission problem). We are concerned about the number of times the ring gear and pinions and all bearings have been replaced and the potential safety issue regarding a possible axle comming out while driving. Also not sure if this qualifies for a "lemon law".

29 Driveshaft problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/15/2000

Excessive driveline whine at speeds above 55mph, when accelerating & decelerrating. Very annoying/ unable to remedy situation with dealer. Called Jeep customer service. No help at all, dealer says normal.

30 Driveshaft problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/16/1999

Vehicle vibration and load roaring noise reported 3 times to dealership. Driveshaft was ordered but the parts were on back-order. We were told the vehicle was safe to drive, but the driveshaft vibration caused the transfer case to blow apart on the interstate at 70mph. This nearly cased the vehicle to go out of control. Dealership then said the failure was due to vehicle abuse, but we had an independent mechanic and our auto insuance claims adjuster certify that the transfer case failure was due to the excessive vibration of the drive shaft. The bottom line: dealership knew we were driving an un-safe vehicle and tried to cover their error by accusing the customer of vehicle abuse.

Driveshaft and yoke are defective in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is a known problem to Chrysler and the refuse to fix it. They have even set up complaint forums in some automobile review web sites. I would appreciate any help you may be able to provide in this matter. Chrysler knows of the problem but after 4 service attemps they cant fix it.
