6 Transfer Case problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/01/2021

Initially brought my Jeep into shop due to jerky movement at slows speeds while trying to turn or backing up and then "service 4wd" light coming on. Was informed that the transfer case control module and shift motor were bad. When I picked up the Jeep everything seemed to be working fine. Less than 3months later, and approx. 5,000 miles, "service 4wd" light came back on and seems to be stuck in 4 low. Had car towed to same shop, in case one of the previous parts went bad, and was informed that the transfer case needs to be replaced now. Looking into the error, it seems this is another "known problem" with Jeep along with the rocker arm issue I previously had on this Jeep. As both of these issues are safety related since the vehicle could stall or shut down while driving, I believe there should be a recall on both issues. Especially since both of these repairs are very expensive!.

7 Transfer Case problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/12/2020

While travelling on the interstate at approx 70 mph, the vehicle lost torque and lost ability to accelerate and had a loud knocking noise while hitting gas pedal. Vehicle is only 80,100 of 100,000/5 year powertrain warranty. Dealer would not warranty this powertrain issue even though the VIN has multiple earlier powertrain warranty items completed. Dealer diagnosed as front transfer case internally failed, and front drive shaft has failed. My independent mechanic indicated this failure is common and may also require a front differential replacement. The dealer initially diagnosed as front differential failure but determined it to be the transfer case. Parts are not readily available due to this being a common failure (4+ weeks for parts). A font drive shaft and transfer case failures are very dangerous and can cause the vehicle to crash.

8 Transfer Case problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

My 2speed transfer case went out.

9 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/19/2019

Defective transfer case gear motor and transfer case control module. This causes vehicle lurching while at slow speeds I. E. In a parking lot in drive or reverse driving straight but worse when turning. Also caused loss of abs, traction control and forward collision warning systems.

10 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/25/2019

I heard a rattling noise and immediately made an appointment with a dealership. They ran diagnostic testing and whatever they did during the test, it caused the vehicle to lock up and become not drivable. They informed me it's the transfer case, which is a known and costly issue.

11 Transfer Case problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

Just recently bought the car with 50,000 miles on it car is in good condition but only a month after I purchased it a light saying service 4wd has popped up on my dash and ive taken it to several dealers and they say its needs a new transfer case and is a common problem with these cars. If it is a common problem then why has there not been a recall on it, it is pretty ridiculous as much as people pay for a car and the problems that go wrong with it and the manufacturer cant even fix there own problems on the cars that built! there should be a recall for this problem as it is not a cheap fix and is obviously a problem with the manufacturing when the car was built. I am disgusted with how shitty and unreliable cars are now a days, something needs to be done!.

12 Transfer Case problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

Rear driveshaft cv joint failure at ~78,500 miles. The boot that contains the bearing grease failed and left a ring of grease on neighboring components. Failed joint is the one that connects to the transfer case. From onset of symptoms (mild clicking noise) to noticeable driveline vibration and very loud popping in center of vehicle was less than 100 miles. Unsure how much longer I could have driven before the joint failed or the driveline vibrations damaged the transfer case or rear axle. When the rear driveshaft was removed, I noticed a grease ring on a front driveshaft cv joint. That driveshaft will also be replaced.

13 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/22/2019

Started to hear a loud clicking noise coming from the engine compartment. Took it to byers Jeep dealership in columbus ohio to have it evaluated . Mechanics say that the transfer case is bad and the transfer case module needs to be replaced immediately. The Jeep Grand Cherokee clicking noise was heard while both in stationary and driving mode.

14 Transfer Case problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/01/2019

I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4x4 and had a ticking noise when starting the vehicle and turning it off that comes and goes away. We have had it diagnosed to be the transfer case module and when researching to see if I can buy the part, I was advised it's on a national backorder with the dealer and aftermarket. Also while researching, saw multiple reports stating that when this happened the car stalls while driving multiple times and makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. My vehicle is used for work and driven all day on the freeway. I've also read that there are no warning signs and then it's blown out and unable to be driven until fixed. I worry about driving the vehicle at all as I don't want it stalling on the highway or anywhere else. I worry it will cause an accident I can't prevent as the vehicle may just suddenly stall in the middle of driving. Been a reoccurring issue for myself for about a month or two.

15 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/12/2019

Vehicle had faulty dtcm (transfer case control module) at 73,000 miles. Faulty unit resulted in misreadings sent to transfer case causing transfer case to fail mechanically. No codes or artifacts left behind from fault. Dtcm and transfer case both needed to be replaced due to faulty control module. This issue is commonly reported online across Jeep forums for vehicles using this dtcm, and fails commonly. When inquiring with dealership on repairs, dealer stated this part is known to fail commonly but no TSB has been issued. Opened warranty case with fca regarding failure of mopar branded part on vehicle. Fca warranty department was only willing to split repair cost 50/50 (vehicle outside of power train warranty) even after noting this is a known issue.

16 Transfer Case problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/26/2019

An unintentional shifting of the transfer case the 4 wheel drive its on and cant take it off, all started with the vehicle been stationary.

17 Transfer Case problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/22/2019

Driving from the gas station to the highway when the rear air suspension failed to shut off and overinflated causing the forward mounts on the rear subframe to be ripped out of the body of the car which cause the subframe to crash into the exhaust, transfer case, and drive shaft which immobilized the vehicle. No injuries occurred luckily as the vehicle had not made it to the highway when the failure occurred.

18 Transfer Case problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/30/2019

Transfer case actuator causes the vehicle to jump in and out of 4 wheel drive causes grinding noises and jerking. Which therefore causes a hazard on the road.

19 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

Vehicle was in for 100,000 mile service at dealership. During inspection tech noted there was seepage coming from the input/output shaft seals on the transfer case. After reading Jeep forums I noticed this seems to be a common occurrence.

22 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee srt. In the last year and a half, I have had to have the transfer case & rear end replaced. This is just uncalled for on a 4 year old car. It is currently sitting at the dealership (has been there for a week so far) to have the lifters/cam replaced. The parts from Chrysler are so far on back order there's no hope of getting them. The aftermarket parts are also on back order. Those 2 things tell me that this is a widespread malfunction with this engine & seems to me to be a design flaw.

23 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/17/2018

The Jeep was stationary, started, put into neutral, put into 4 wheel drive and it locked into it. Unable to get it out of 4 wheel drive . Dealer says its transmission sensor and clutch on transfer case.

24 Transfer Case problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/16/2018

The transfer case has not worked properly and the car lurches and stutters while driving. There was a recall involving the transfer case and the computer, but there has not been one for the transfer case itself, which I believe was compromised from due to the computer issue before it was fixed.

25 Transfer Case problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/14/2018

Transfer case, suspension and ignition switch seems to be causing major issues after 105,000 miles and the "warranty" just ended just before all these issues started happening. When tried to start once the engine shuttered then turned off. Started up after that, but then it has issues wanting to accelerate and can feel the Jeep struggling at times to switch gears or whatever the transfer case may assist in. Also have noticed the suspension has start to rock.

26 Transfer Case problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/26/2017

I was informed by a supervisor at the Chrysler corporation that the reason that the transfer case (part of the drivetrain) on my all wheel drive Jeep broke while I was driving was because there was a difference in tire tread depth of greater than 3/32 of an inch (2. 3mm). They were kind enough to reimburse me $1000 towards the repair, however, I do believe that this is a safety issue.

27 Transfer Case problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/01/2017

My vehicle was in motion on the highway, on a straight-away. I heard a loud boom, then my vehicle started to smoke. I pulled off the road; and called for a tow. The mechanic stated that it was the transfer case seal that blew. He changed it and added fluid, but the noise is still there. He said that if it doesn't go away. Now, the Jeep won't shift out of first gear. It has been sitting in my driveway since I picked it up from the mechanic on 12/4/17.

28 Transfer Case problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/19/2017

Had Jeep recall performed for the auto park issue. Since the recall, the Jeep has tried to engage autopark four times while in motion. The first time we were 30 miles from home, merging on to freeway. Jeep went in to neutral, display read 'vehicle speed too fast to shift I to park'. Obviously not trying to shift into park as I merge in highway traffic! stopped in side of road, vehicle would not shift into park. Set ebrake, had vehicle towed in. A few weeks later, transfer case internally exploded. June 19th wife was going through an intersection, vehicle went in to neutral again. This time display says ' autopark disabled. She coasted in to a parking lot, shut car off, stated it and everything was ok. Four days ago wife was backing out of driveway and Jeep slammed in to park, on its own. She tried pulling forward and it slammed into park again. Autopark once again tried to engage itself. This feature should only happen when speeds are 1. 2 mph or slower, or if at higher speeds, it should shift transmission into neutral. I'm scared to drive this Jeep now. If it's slamming into park at 10 mph, what's to prevent it from doing it at 65/70 mph?.

29 Transfer Case problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/09/2017

30 Transfer Case problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/01/2017

When driving 60 mph, going down a hill, clutch in transfer case slipped. Causing slipping/grinding noise and vehicle must be stopped, put in park and restarted to reset the vehicle. This happened once, I was afraid to drive the vehicle. The Jeep was taken to a mechanic who said that the clutch in the transfer case slipped.

31 Transfer Case problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/14/2017

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle did not go into four wheel drive whenever the "service four wheel drive system" warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the final drive control module was "flashed". The failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and ordered the dealer to recheck the remedy. The dealer wanted to perform a diagnostic evaluation, but not for free. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

32 Transfer Case problem of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/05/2016

I bought the vehicle. In less than 1000 miles within purchase the 4w drive light came on. I was parked on a curb at a retirement home and a ambulance was parked in front of me. While I was inside people ran in and said my Jeep was rolling away and it hit the ambulance in front of me. The Jeep was parked and turned off when it rolled away. Witnesses and the police report confirm this. After getting the run around from the dealership for 6 months I took it somewhere else to get it looked at and was told the transfer case needed to be replaced.

The contact stated that while driving at various rates speed, the contact would hear knocking and banging sounds coming from engine without warning. The warning light eventually illuminated after the issue persisted for some time. 34 Transfer Case problem of the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

The transfer case on my vehicle (2007 Jeep srt) went out. I took to two repair shops and dealer and every place indicated that this has been a long standing issue with these vehicles. I then filed a complaint with Chrysler and the case manager indicated that my complaint would stay internal and could not advise me on where to file a complaint for a safety or mechanical defect. I then did some research and it appears it should go the NHTSA. With such a common defect and with such a large scale issue (dealership has part for sale for $4000-$6000 not including labor) I do feel this should be considered a recall.

35 Transfer Case problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/20/2016

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While the vehicle was being repaired for NHTSA campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system), the dealer also remedied NHTSA campaign number: 13v175000 (electrical system, power train). Prior to the repairs, the vehicle operated as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 190,000.
