Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have reported 17 problems related to battery cable (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Grand Cherokee based on all problems reported for the Grand Cherokee.
The main Jeep battery had a thermal runaway and melted to the point it started a fire. The battery is located under the passenger seat and melted the battery cover, seat cover, carpet, seat trim. Both battery cables Jeep would not cover this under their warranty. 2018 Jeep warranty statement from the date of purchase, a Jeep basic limited warranty (or Jeep bumper-to-bumper warranty) covers the cost of repairs throughout most of your vehicle. It also covers the cost of parts and labor due to defective materials, workmanship, or factory preparation. A basic warranty also covers Jeep roadside assistance for towing to a dealership during the first three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

While driving on the roadway and highway my vehicle will randomly kick itself into neutral and will kill the engine with no sudden warning and or warning lights that there is a problem. The battery will remain on but the engine is off. This has happened on 3 separate occasions since I purchased the vehicle in 2015 more recently this issue began in 2019. After attempting to restart the vehicle it will attempt to turn over the engine but will not start, leaving me stranded in the middle the the roadway. 50/50% chance the engine light will turn on and unknown error. The only way I have been able to move the vehicle is to remove the battery cable and let it sit for 30 minutes resetting the electrical system. Though this is a short term fix. I have contacted multiple Jeep dealers in the area and everyone I have talked to has advised me they have never seen or heard of this problem. This is a safety concern loosing all power to my vehicle while driving on the roadway and highway. I fear that this will cause a greater problem to myself and the public if the issue is not fixed. I can see a catastrophe if the problem is not fixed. I took my vehicle into a Jeep dealership to have the electrics recall problem fixed a few years ago when I was advised from Jeep unknown exact date. This is a liability and lives will be hurt including myself if this problem is overseen.

Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Jeep gran cherokee. The contact stated that whiled driving approximately 35 mph smoke was present coming from under the hood and the check battery sensor light had illuminated before the vehicle suddenly stalled in the drive way. The contact was able to remove the battery cable from the battery. The vehicle was then towed the local dealer cross Chrysler located at 1501 gardiner ln, louisville ky. Who diagnosed that the alternator had failed also damaging the pcm. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the NHTSA recall campaign number 17v435000(electrical system). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 136,517. Jft.

Car stalled after starting and backing out of driveway. Has not been starting after until multiple attempts and stalling after starting. A few years ago it stalled in the middle of an intersection in pinellas park florida while my husband was driving 25 mph with our children. Aaa thought it was a loose battery cable. Car also has failed to start off an on over the last few yeara and various parts have been replaced yet problem persists and is now getting worse. Now we are very concerned that the real cause of these persistent problems have gone undetected and we have a malfunctioning tipm.

Driving down hwy. For 10 minutes and battery light came on, short time later vehicle died. Battery cables on jumper side hot, strong smell of burned rubber. Battery and alternator very hot and could not be touched. Seem to be direct ground on 180 amp alternator. Had to replace battery and alternator just to get power back. Now more checks needed on computer. Same as p60 recall, however, Chrysler tells me the 180 amp is not involved.
When the Jeep was started it would not shift into gear. Also the car could not be turned off. All of the the warning lights on the dash were also on. So the car was left with the engine running but nothing else working. The cooling fan for the engine would not work so the car started to over heat. I called the dealer and asked for suggestions on how to turn off the car. The response was to take off the battery cable. The battery is under the seat and can not be removed with out tools. At this point the car over heated and was pushing out coolant onto the ground. I finally had to open the fuse / relay box in the engine compartment and start pulling relays until the engine turned off. I had no other way of getting the engine to stop running and the fear was something would get hot enough to catch on fire. All of this resulted in over $1600. 00 dollars in damage.
I bought a 2012 Grand Cherokee used three weeks ago to the day when while driving the kids to the library Saturday, suddenly all the warning lights (check engine, abs, traction control, brake, service power steering system etc. ) buzzers, speedometer and transmission position started acting erratically. I pulled over and turned the car off. After a few minutes I restarted it and made it to my driveway when it did it again. I got it into my garage, disconnected the battery cable and let it sit until this morning. When I re-connected the cable and started the car only the check engine light came on. So the wife followed me to the dealer where we dropped it off. Luckily it made the 8 mile trip without any other issues. Then a few hours later the service dept. Called me to say it was the tipm, appx. $950. 00, not under warranty, and about 3 to 5 days to fix.
Jeep Grand Cherokee 2012 headliner fire. Recall p36. Headliner burst into flames while stationary in my driveway at home. Had been driving the car 15 minutes prior to the fire starting. Lots of smoke and noxious fumes coming from the headliner area above the windshield prior to the fire. Thinking that this was probably an electrical problem, I was trying to disconnect the battery cable to prevent further electrical current flowing through the wiring. Before I was able to disconnect the battery, flames erupted just above the driver's side front window. I was able to distinguish the flames with water from a garden hose and high pressure nozzle. The fire department was called and arrived within 10 minutes of the call. They cut out the headliner, cut the wiring and disconnected the battery cable. I reported this incident to Chrysler on November 28. They sent an investigator to investigate the situation and submit a report. The report has been received by Chrysler and it is my underdtanding it is now in their legal department, where it has been for almost a month. I have not heard anything from Chrysler on this matter. I have contacted the Jeep recall center at least 8 times over the last 30 days and am told by them that someone will be contacting me within 2 to 3 business days. It never happens. Also, I had had the p36 recall service performed at the Chrysler dealer on July 30, four months prior to the fire. I have now seen that there is a new recall notification from Chrysler, December 24, on this same p36 vanity lamp wiring issue. The new recall specifically addresses 2011 - 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee's that have had the original p36 recall service performed. It appears they are trying to re-fix a problem the dealers did not fix the first time. Who can I contact to get some help with this? so far Chrysler is doing nothing to resolve this matter with me. Thank you.
After parking the vehicle the win module started to bind while turning vehicle off. Key fell out of ignition while car was still on. Ignition is now stuck between acc and on mode and key is removable while in motion. Vehicle is unable to be shut off via key ignition, to turn off vehicle battery cable must be removed.

I was driving my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee & was going about 15-20mph when suddenly my car turned off. No warning, no sputtering, no symbols flashing on the dash, nothing. It just simply died. I only realized my car was completely off when I happened to look at my dashboard and the gas gage was on e and the speedometer and mileage were not on. I tried my hardest to steer and luckily I was able to pull into a parking lot. I opened the hood and checked the battery cables and they were fine. The truck started up again but this incident scared me to death. I had just gotten off the highway when this happened and I am a mom of 3. I called my local Jeep dealer the next day. The service guy told me to remove some of my keys from my key holder and in his words "this is a band-aid fix for now, there is a recall for ignition problems but it won't be rolling out until September". What?? this is unacceptable. It should be fixed now.

Problem started with the key fob not releasing when trying to turn off the vehicle and will stick between the ignition and auxiliary positions. I have to wait for 10-15 minutes or disconnect the battery cables in order to remove the key fob and lock my vehicle. Now the key fob will move to the auxiliary position or in between the auxiliary and on position while driving. This has caused the engine to stall and almost caused me to have an accident on the highway with my children in the vehicle. Jeep/Chrysler has been absolutely no help as I have been told that my Jeep was produced one month after the effective date of the ignition recall and they will not fix it. I went to the Jeep dealership where I purchased the vehicle and was told that this was a "common problem" but a month later I am still waiting for the ignition module. Now I have a Jeep that I believe is not safe for my family to travel in and am constantly getting a run-around from the dealership when attempting to get this problem repaired.
There has been many occasions upwards of 13 or 14 times where my vehicle will not start. My battery has a full charge, I have fuel in the tank it just wont start. The only way around this to get my vehicle to start is to do a hard reset and unhook the battery cable for 30 seconds and hook it back up then and only then will it start. Then it will start the next 15 or so times and then I have the same problem it wont start. Same deal, battery is great, fuel in the tank, just wont start.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the instrument panel would sporadically power off and reboot independently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who removed the battery cable for 10 minutes before reconnecting. There were no repairs made to the vehicle. The exact cause of the failure was unknown however, the failure recurred. The failure was not reported to the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 29. The current mileage was 233.
It all started with what we thought was a bad key fob. After about 3 trips to the dealer they finally suggested that we replace the key fob. That seemed to take care of the problem for a little while then it progressed to not starting on the 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd try. It just kept getting worse until it might take up to 10 tries before it would fire up . Then it got to when it would start it would immediately die. About 3 weeks ago my wife was leaving the driveway of our house and the thing just quit while she was going through the gate. I'm just thankful that she wasn't on the highway at speed when it happened as she had our young son with her as well. About 2 days later the battery was dead when my wife got in to leave work. As I was away from home working and she needed a vehicle she took it back to the dealer (don marshall Chrysler in somerset,ky. ) where they proceeded to install a new battery at the rip-off price of over $300. 00!! about a week later I figured out why the battery had went dead so quickly. I drove it to my in-laws house and when I got out of it I heard the fuel pump continuing to run even after the engine had been shut off. My wife apparently hadn't noticed the sound of the fuel pump running when she had parked it that morning to go in to work and it had ran all day until it killed the battery. Had it at the dealer yesterday (not rip-off don marshall Chrysler) and they diagnosed it as a faulty fuel pump relay switch. (duh) I told them what it was before we took it to them. They said that until they could get the part to fix it with that I could just tap on top of the tipm to get the fuel pump to shut off. ( I had been taking the battery cable off to get it to stop. ) when we got it home, sure enough, I tapped the tipm and it immediately shut the fuel pump off. Well guess what? yep. . . . . . The damn thing wouldn't start at all this morning!!.
In oct. 2012 the car would not start. No click no nothing. However, the lights, radio, etc. Still worked. If you waited about 15 to 60 minutes it would then start. I took it to the shop and they replaced the starter. It ran fine until April 2013. Then once again it is doing the exact same thing. Now the $638. 00 plus the cost I am incurring for rental car. I purchased the wrap warranty and they tell me that because it is attached to the battery cable it is not covered. I have read all over the internet of hundreds of people having electrical problems all related to this wiring harness. I am not a mechanic but I would think that this could cause a fire. Regardless, Jeep needs to recall these vehicles.
Driving along, car simply cuts off. No warning. Solution is to disconnect battery cables, wait about 5 minutes, reconnect and restart. Dealers are baffled. No known reliable fix. Very dangerous if on bridge, interstate or tunnel. Especially a problem at night, as "fix" involves shutting off all lights including hazard warning lights.

Strange electrical issues start happening. My car wouldn't start and couldn't be jump started. Had to be towed to the dealer. The problem was a corroded positive battery cable lead. The battery cable assembly had to be replaced at a cost of $300. 00. The car is two years old and I live in colorado. I fine it difficult to believe that a battery cable could corrode to the point of having to be replaced in two years. I believe that it is a defective cable not corrosion that caused my problem.
