Failure Date: 10/11/2013

See attached diagram. I was driver of car stopped at red light . Jeep Grand Cherokee (VIN # 1j4gw48n72c2253) engine revved at high throttle, while btsi in park. The driver may be hard of hearing, may have been distracted to hear the noise or know comes from her car, may have had windows shut and been insulated from the sound, but she changed gear from park to drive as the tires were spinning as observed by witnesses who saw or heard those tires spinning while the car was in stationary position. Jeep speed forward about 70 feet to rear-impact my car and crush the rear of car inward. It distorted frame from rear to front or car, and rear impact caused damage to front of car. Prior to impact, my foot depressed hard on brake because I braced or stiffened hard for impact, when I heard the squeal of tires of stationary car nearby, and people leaving a carnival were nearby. After Jeep crushed my car inward, it accelerated again against my car and my efforts keep the brake pedal down, and it propelled my car forward, and then continued on its path of destruction. It wrecked my car, itself, another car, and collided with a another two cars, it hit pedestrians, caused fatality, caused injuries, knocked down parking meters, skidded dozens of feet, broke off its front tires in chunks, skidded its metal rim because that was all that was left of the tire, skidded pieces of rubber of tire, and finally got stuck after last impact, while its engine revved and its tires spun, causing yaw scraping of tires on sidewalk. _police dept found the btsi defective, and the skid marks show that the brakes were ineffective or inoperable as Jeep's engine continued to accelerate. Jeep driver ran from it after it got stuck because she thought it would explode. The wheels stopped spinning when the motor got shut. Sudden uncontrolled acceleration, ineffective braking, defective btsi.

38 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

I filed original oct 4 2016 NHTSA complaint and also objected to restriction NHTSA imposed upon complaint (2000 characters in total, and total mb of attachments 5mb or less) because oct 4 2016 complaint is insufficient, incomplete. Nhtsa investigation requires more information from me (reports, testimony, dozens of critical police photos) necessary for NHTSA investigation of my complaint. On oct 4 2016, I demanded NHTSA investigation unit contact me by email, so that I may document data my submission to NHTSA, as part of my complaint. To date, NHTSA refuses, it has done nothing to investigate because NHTSA stonewalls me for information. Nhtsa investigation units endangers public safety with deliberate lack of data, resulting in bogus non-investigation. On oct 11 2013, 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, VIN no [xxx], had vehicle malfunction event, unintended acceleration, high speed start, high impact and high energy collisions, defective btsi (brake transmission shift interrupter), no brake throttle override, no safeguards to stop vehicle, high rate of speed crashing over and over, in throttle wide open, no software or hardware upgrade to stop or prevent unusual acceleration while in park, inability to brake vehicle to stop at such high rate of speed. Tires vaporized, chunks of rubber broke, metal rim remnants of tire skidded sidewalk and street, in series of horrific collisions, documented by photos and reports which NHTSA deliberately refuses to acquire from me as part of my complaint, to manipulate the outcome of bogus and deliberately flawed pseudo-NHTSA investigation. Due to height mismatch square box Jeep and subcompact cars, Jeep was battering ram against subcompact cars effectively without impact bars (bars to low) in such malfunction event, wreck subcompact cars, endanger lives and health of occupants of small cars who absorb impact (instead of distributed forces via impact bar), grave collisions. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Failure Date: 03/04/2012

This is a 5. 7 hemi engine with 62200 miles. I had driven into a 7-11 parking lot and almost came to a halt deciding whether to park on the right or left. Decided to park on the right. Car was at around 2 miles per hour, lifted my leg off the accelerator to hit brake, when the car suddenly accelerated, climbed over the sidewalk, sliced and felled a tree and rammed into a laundromat. Brake was applied to the point of literally standing on it with whole body weight but car did not respond. Finally the car came to a halt although engine was making revving sounds for a few more seconds. Luckily nobody was inside the laundromat. Air bag did not deploy even though the front was badly damaged. Police report was filed. Cop was also surprised air bag did not deploy for this hard a crash. The car has been owned by me since new for 7 years and this has never happened. Insurance sent a special technician to check, but nothing could be found. Car is more than likely totaled at this point. Please do something about this, someone can get badly injured for life, or deaths can occur.

49 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

I washed my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee at a coin operated car wash. I climbed into the car, started it up and shifted from park to drive. The car went to full throttle instantly on it's own. I applied brakes but that had little affect and the car rapidly accelerated out of the car wash stall toward a brick wall approx. 20 feet away. I steered the car into a tree as I felt it would be a softer crash as opposed to a wall. The car bounced off of the tree and continued at full throttle into the driveway of the car wash as I continued to push on the brake pedal as hard as I could. I finally turned the key off and stopped. This happened very quickly and I wish I would have reacted sooner. The left front fender and grill were damaged and I had the car towed to a repair shop. I feel fortunate that nobody was hurt and I am very interested in finding the cause of this .

While pulling out of a gas station into heavy traffic, I began accelerating to the speed limit of 45 mph. I was accelerating rapidly as traffic was coming quickly from behind. The Jeep stopped accelerating and the instrument panel showed all of the drive letters with boxes around them. The Jeep would not accelerate for over 20 seconds, causing me to rapidly pull off of the road to avoid traffic behind me. The dealer found a faulty electronic shift module and replaced it. The vehicle has worked well until 2/15/12. At 70,000 miles, the dealer installed module has failed again. Once more this happened when entering a heavy traffic roadway. There have been numerous reports throughout the internet of people experiencing this same issue. In my case, both failures resulted in me having to take evasive action to avoid a collision. 58 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/10/2008

Jeep accident as result of unintended acceleration: I drove up driveway to put 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland in garage (normal daily activity). Electricity was out from a storm so the automatic garage door opener did not operate. I parked in front of the bay, put the car in park, turned off the engine and opened the garage door manually. I got back in the vehicle, started the engine, put it in drive and started slowly into the garage. I wanted to reposition the car, so I applied the brakes and was about to put it in reverse when, suddenly, the engine revved and the car shot forward like a torpedo. I had my foot plastered on the brake but the car would not stop and plowed into a garden tractor at the back of the garage. I tried to put it in park to stop it, but with the engine still revving, the car shot backwards out of the garage, across 37 feet of driveway, climbed over a low stone wall and went another 2 feet before slamming into the fieldstone bay window of our house, finally stopping. All of this happened within seconds. The brakes would not stop the car in either direction, and it accelerated at a frightening speed. When the car sped forward, it destroyed the tractor and threw it into another car parked in the garage. It also cracked the back block wall of the garage and did other property damage. When it went backwards, it hit the house so hard that it bowed the fieldstone front of the house, split drywall, damaged studs, etc. My husband got in the vehicle to move it, using the emergency brake to stop it. He said the brakes were very spongy and close to the floor. The next morning, pedal pressure was better and by two days later, the pedal pressure had improved even more. Total damage is still being computed, but the Jeep has been totaled, the other car in the garage sustained $2,000 in damages and other damage to the garage, house and property is well in excess of $20,000.
