My Jeep stalled in 50mph traffic causing a horribly dangerous situation. I barely coasted to the side of the road, and it wouldn't restart. I had it towed to the dealer where I was later told my tone/reluctor wheel had broken resulting in loss of signal from the crankshaft sensor so the vehicle shut down.

While driving to work one night my Jeep started making a whining sound. I thought it was the heater since it was 12 degrees outside that night. I leave for work, get about 6 miles down the road and my Jeep starts failing. Warning lights, battery, traction control, wipers slowly go across the windshield, lights dimming. I got to a safe spot to pull over but in the process of stopping my vehicle lost all functionaloty (no breaks, power steering, lights, all electronics gone) and couldnt stop. It finally stops and I'm left with a completely dead vehicle. 12am in freezing weather while 5 months pregnant. When my boyfriend arrived to get me, he noticed a strong burning smell coming from under the hood. At this time the vehicle had sat barely out of the road in the dead of night with no hazards possible to allow other drivers to see me. We find out that there is an alternator recall on my Jeep and take it into the dealership as soon as scheduling allowed. Before alternator blew my Jeep had zero issues. They had my vehicle for 4 days and called to say my Jeep was fixed (no loaner car offered). I go up the next day, they replaced the pcm and alternator, they say nothing else. I go to start my Jeep and it cranks for about 30 seconds and starts. Never happened before. I go back inside to the dealer who has said nothing the last 2 days about my vehicle not running properly and they tell me it is my crank shaft position sensor and was not covered under the recall. And they said they couldnt promise the car would make it home and it was my problem. Unhappy with results we call Chrysler and they tell the dealership to fix that. It does not fix the problem. The problems continue and Chrysler is no longer willing to fix obvious damage from their alternator failure frying the electrical system. The dealership also told me to file a "fake" fire claim on my insurance. Still unresolved.

Vehicle lost power while driving at speeds of 55mph. Check engine light and multiple system warnings were shown by evic, including abs, traction control, ignition system, 4wd system, and air suspension system. Braking power was severely diminished. Maximum speed was reduced to 5mph, before stalling out after 10 feet. The cause of the issue was a short in the crankshaft position sensor that disabled all powertrain and braking systems. All systems share the same 5 volt circuit into pcm.

The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and lost power in the middle of the freeway. There were no warning lights illuminated and the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed with crank shaft sensor failure and was repaired. However, less than 24 hours after being repaired, the vehicle lost power again. The vehicle was towed to a local shop, but was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact was experiencing the same failure as described in NHTSA campaign number: 04v112000 (electrical system) the failure mileage was 131,000.
I was driving my Jeep to work all of a sudden it bucked and backed fired 2 times and then completely shut down no steering but was able to get to side of road restarted got it back home this has happened many times cant count how many times, I have had it towed home 4 times this year because of this problem and couldnt restart sometimes it bucks and feels like its going to shut down but restarts by its self without turning key this happens at any speed changed tps, crank sensor, starter, fuel pump, pick up coil, distributor cap and rotor plugs and wire, alternator now inside dash lights are starting to flash dim and bright. I bought it 2009 used with a little over 100,000 miles ran great but the last couple years been having trouble with this situation every time I change things it will work for awhile and then starts to act up again.

My Jeep wont start. I've checked the alternator, the battery, starter , crank sensor and all relay fuses. The recall on the ignition switch is the only thing I can think of that is not letting the car start.

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle would suddenly shut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the cam and crank sensors were faulty. The sensors were replaced but the vehicle continued to experience the failure. The contact indicated that the vehicle would also stall due to the main computer overheating. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the screws to the computer. No further information was available. In addition the front driver side seat rails malfunctioned causing the seat to move while operating the vehicle. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 196,000. Jft.
Vehicle stops running while driving, power steering stops working as well as the power brakes. Dangerous on highway. Had the crank sensor replaced due to this problem. Thought the problem was resolved but the same problem happened again on 12/22/14.

Vehicle cranking long before starting, dealer diagnostic was tipm, Jeep was contacted they agreed they has issues with part mentioned and agreed in provide part w/$100 deductible, I still paid for the cranking sensor and labor, new tipm created more electrical problems. When turning signal was activated fog lights were blinking but not the turning lights, taken back to dealer they temporary fix the problem until Jeep releases the new update in at least 2 months, after they fixed the turning lights another issued resulted, now the stop tail brake lights don't turn on if ignition switch is not in on position and sometimes even with the engine running , or if engine is not running. This issue concerns me a lot, since this is very critical if driving on highway and engine stop working how I will let the vehicles behind me that I have an emergency and I'm stepping on the brakes, lights will not turn on. Are you people from NHTSA waiting until fatalities happen to force Jeep to make a recall and fix the problems. ? there are thousands of vehicles with failures related to this tipm , please prevent people die in crashes for this issue and do something about it. Now my car is in the dealer again because they can properly fix it, and all related to this new tipm. These corporation was already bailout with our tax money, now they are passing the cost of repairs to people who purchased a defective product, it is very suspicious that all of the tipm went bad, between 50,000 and 60,000 miles just after warranty has expired. . . Please do something.
I was driving about 40 mph on a four lane highway in traffic when my car engine suddenly shut off. The brakes seized up, but I was able to get the car was able to get the car off on the shoulder. After trying several time to restart the car, I called for assistance. By the time assistance arrived, I was able to start the car and I drove it approximately five mile to my Jeep dealer. They found that the crank sensor was faulty and that was why the engine had shut down. The cost to replace the sensor was $275; however, because shutting down the engine caused the breaks to seize up, the breaks and calipers had to be replaced increasing the total cost of repairs to $1567. If I had been driving at highway speed when this occurred I would probably not be writing this letter.
2007 Jeep 5. 7l. Car stalls on acceleration from stops. Intermittent. Mostly when air is on. 80 degrees and up. Mostly after car has been driven, then parked a few minutes then then accelerated. So dangerous. Have replaced plugs and wires, oil, crankshaft position sensor, asd relay fuse. Now what? spent now $ 2000 on fixes. Dealer can't solve it. I read others with same car have the same. Code b2185 is showing. Chrysler should be sued for knowing the cause and not fixing it due to the cost. I want to join the class action suit while I and my family are still alive!.

Car stalls without warning while driving. Happens at any speed, from 70 on the highway to 5 mph on our road. No warning. Internet search indicated many Jeep owners with same safety issue and no permanent fixes. Have taken to independent auto mechanic and have replaced ignition components (ignition coil, plugs, wiring, distributor cap and rotor and crank sensors) with no results to correct issue. This is very serious and dangerous condition that needs to be addressed by manufacturer.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ltd. , 4. 0/6cyl. /auto trans. Random intermittent stalling and/or bucking while driving, stalling at stop signs, restarts immediatley sometimes (or not). Stalling and/or bucking may occur at 70 mph or 35 mph. Jeep will be running perfectly for miles and then just stall (at 70 mph on interstate while merging with another interstate is very stressful and dangerous. . Ie. I75 at knoxville, tenn. Or i71 at I 270 in columbus, ohio. Many times it will stall while crossing a state highway from a stop sign on a county road. Also occurs on county roads while cruising along at 45 to 55 mph. It is truly a random and intermittent problem . . . And very dangerous. I have been honked at, cursed at, nearly broadsided,/rearended too many times to even begin to count. Problem has been ongoing for 4 years. Replacing the pcm works for maybe 2 months then problem returns sometimes worse than before (have replaced at least 4-5 times. . . Or more!! Jeep dealer can comfirm) have replaced crank sensors, 02 sensors, speed sensors, wiring harness plugs, mufffler, catalytic converter, disributer, plug wires and misc. Wire jumps and repairs, rebuilt transmission, battery. Problem is sometimes not even made any better and "always" returns in a few days or months if better at all. I believe it to be a poor pcm design, but admittedly am not a mechanic but an engineer and surveyor. Many other 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners share my stress and agrivation. Some think it the 2 torx screws wearing thuough and shorting out on the pcm housing at the plugs (too long). I have spent, "literally" thousands of dollars over the past 4-5 years. Runs great 75-85 percent of the time. . . But when it decides to stall it just does it. . . Stopped, accelerating from stop, slowing down from 55 to 35 mph, cruising along at 50 to 75 mph. I do not understand why you do not make Jeep fix this problem (whatever it is) before someone gets killed. . . Like me. Is it about the money? how many millions is one life?.

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee that stalls. Hot or cold, night or day, idling at a light or going 75mph down the interstate. I have had the fuel pump replaced, the fuel system cleaned, the O2 sensor replaces, the water pump replaced, the crank sensor replaced, the map sensor replaced, and the ignition coil replaced (I do still have the old ignition coil). It's in the shop now, and after doing some online research, I have found hundreds of people having the same problem, most of them being charged an outrageous amount of money by Jeep dealers who, ultimately, do not fix the problem. I would not be so concerned, but like many Jeep owners, I have small children. The problem started almost a year ago, happens daily, and if it should happen on a busy road or highway when I am going 60+mph, I am concerned about my safety and that of my kids.
Vehicle traveling on PA turnpike at 65 mph when engine shut down. Power systems quit but I was able to get the car off the driving lane could have easily caused a crash if it had quit during passing vehicle, 2007 Grand Cherokee with n3. 0 crd diesel, was towed to dealer dealer replaced crankshaft sensor to fix issue.
Car keeps cutting off while driving. Has done it several times on highway, rural roads and main roads. It has caused me to almost have several wrecks. When the car cuts off, I lose all power. I have been stranded several times with my autistic son. I have had to walk back home or get someone to come get me if it was further away. I have had to use someone car because I am afraid it will do it and I will wreck. After a while it will start again, but does the same thing over and over again. It started off about 1 month ago when I would just crank the car and the first time it would not crank but the 2nd time it would. In the last 2 weeks I have been stranded or be driving and have to put it in neutral to see if it will crank. It does and then I put in drive. It cuts off again. I have to pull over to the side of the road no matter where you are and sometimes if you are going on the highway at the speed and your car cuts off, you lose power and could easy wreck. If I was to pull out and it cut off, I could be hit and killed or a family member in the car with me. I was stranded across the street about 2 weeks ago and I was across the street from a Jeep dealership. A gentleman came over and brought some equipment when I told him what had happened and he told me that the crank shaft sensor went out. There is a recall on that part but not on mine. I have talked to the daimler Chrysler on December 29, 2009 and told them of the incident and was given a case number and was told someone would call me back. A gentleman did call back and left me a message that they had made a decision. I was not at the phone at the time he left the message. He left his name and number and I have called back. He was suppose to call me back the following day and he did not.
Purchased vehicle 8/9/08. At this time only problem we was you had to press clock button for radio to work. During 2008 we noticed a lot of odd behavior in electrical areas. October 29, 2009 brought Jeep to used car dealership with these complaints: first check engine light started coming on, then it began flashing, door chime starts dinging, illuminated areas dim & brighten-flashing, dashboard lights go crazy flashing on & off, interior lights turn on & off, transmission lights go crazy & need to shift down in order to get vehicle to drive, headlights & tail lights flash on and off which is very unsafe while driving on a dark highway at night. Used car dealership had car towed to Jeep dealership in new london. These repairs cost $500. 12 for faulty crank sensor, sensor crankshaft, spark plugs, leak at trans electrical. August 17, 2011 took to a new dealership w/ same problems. Went to valenti Jeep in mystic, CT. Was advised junction block needed to be replaced and codes in multiple modules reset-this cost $318. 52. September 10, 2011 back to valenti Jeep for same problems & for install. Of junction box costing $249. 00 because of installation costs & other items we were advised to take care of. Meanwhile as a warning this all begins after check engine light starts flashing. By September 28, 2011 it begins again: at this time check engine light & all other lights start up again, along with fact that you can now pull key out & vehicle is still running. Blinking dash lights, ac on & off, gauges drop to 0, told only reason this is happening is because we have remote start system they don't use. Tech reset system & disconnected our remote start system at a cost of $90. 40. Then by October of 2011-approximately, check engine light has returned & transmission lights are blinking. Also headlights started flashing & tail lights. These issues are very sporadic.
The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power without warning. The dealer test drove the vehicle and it stalled. The cause of the failure could not be determined. The current and failure mileages were 106,000. Updated 4/16/08 the consumer stated applying the gas pedal does not help the vehicle move. The vehicle jerks and the gauges move around. The cam sensor, crank sensor and fuel filter have all been replaced to no avail. Updated.
The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled when decelerating or turning. The dealer replaced the ignition sensor and crank sensor. The relay wiring overlay on the crank positioning sensor was the most recent replacement; however, the vehicle continues to stall. The contact has to place the vehicle in neutral in order for it to restart. The dealer advised him to bring the vehicle back. The current mileage was 126,00 and the failure mileage was unavailable.
I own a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, 4. 0, inline-6, 2wd with 118,000 miles. My 98 jgc started stalling randomly; on acceleration, deceleration, highway, stoplights, etc. It would always start back up and run again, but the stalling would happen at any time. No codes would register either. The idle air control motor and ignition coil was replaced, but the problem continued. I replaced the ignition wires, distributor cap, spark plugs, rotor and throttle position sensor but still the same. Out of desperation, I replaced the crankshaft sensor and checked for loose and rusty connections. This is very dangerous.
: the contact stated while driving 60 mph on the interstate, there was a loss of all vehicle power, and the engine stalled without warning. Afterwards, the engine was easily restarted. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the electrical wires along the engine were mounted incorrectly and had worn into. The electrical wires were replaced, but the engine stalling problem persisted. The manufacturer was alerted. Updated 12/28/2006 - whike driving at speeds of 5 - 60 mph all the dasj lights would flash on and off and the vehicle would loose power. So far the dealer has replaced the crank sensor due to wear, front control module.
Auto had 40000+ miles when I bought it from my brother. I had it only a few months when it stalled on the interstate. It would not start until I sat for a little while. I am capable of overcoming auto trouble so I didn't think much about this incident due to the fact that I have been a mechanic for many years now. Then it began to stall in heavy traffic and sometimes would start again and other times after waiting several minutes. I replaced the crank sensor, in-tank fuel pump and filter. It ran okay for a while but began to hard start and stall again about 2 mos. Ago. Then 2 days ago it stalled something like 25 times coming home from the hospital. Since then I have been on the internet reading the blogs about this problem and if everyone that has this issue would email you, your computers would shut down. It is unbelievable that the manufacturer is just replacing the expensive parts at random, taking the money and not fixing the problem. These people, myself included, are begging for a solution to a problem with a very nice automobile made in America by skilled top dollar union labor. It is getting close to scam epidemic. My car is sitting in my garage not fixed because there are about ten different things in the electrical and fuel system that can cause these symptoms. I am a disabled veteran and cannot afford to go down that eliminating process. My doctor doesn't do me that way and I won't allow the manufacturer to do it either.

Vehicle experienced sudden stalling at various speeds. Taken to dealer for check up, but the cause was undetermined. Initially the dealer replaced the crank sensor which did not resolve the problem. The dealer later determined that a faulty sensor package was the cause of the stalling.
Vehicle stalls while driving with foot on gas causing potential accident without warning. Crankshaft sensor was replaced to correct problem. This also ocurred in March, 2003. The same sensor was replaced to correct problem. Vehicle will not run without this sensor, and there is no saftey default mode provided to the computer to keep vehicle running if crank sensor circuit fails.
11/2001 vehicle started stalling intermittently while stopped or at slow speed. Since 11/23/2001 has been out of service for 58 days - crank sensor, fuel relay, pcm, 2 wiring harnesses, clock spring, transmission have not fixed the problem, when it dies, it resets the computer and new one have developed, I. E. - almost dies then lurches forward, at speeds over 50 vehicle feels like the back tires hit ice and then catch (temp 60 degrees). Had 2 CO-pilots - only shows everything shuts down, no diagnostics information.
