1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/31/2025

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 20v699000 (engine and engine cooling), and the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure occurred. The contact stated that coolant had leaked onto the driveway. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the radiator was fractured. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the egr cooler failed (exhaust gas recirculation) and there was coolant intrusion into the oil. The contact was informed that the egr cooler needed to be replaced, along with the coolant bottle, the upper and lower radiator hoses, and possibly the high-pressure fuel pump. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the warranty had expired. The contact was informed that the recall repair was completed with an upgraded part. The failure mileage was approximately 173,000.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/13/2025

Engine light came took in for service. The dealer recommends replacing a damaged intake manifold for $2,247. 33. It appears there are recalls on these for same year as my vehicle involving both Jeep and ram trucks. However my VIN does not fall into the recall? I find this odd and I understand there has to be a cut off, but I believe my vehicle was made around the same time and I don’t think Chrysler was aware of the problem until later… I also have engine oil cooler leaking which I am unsure if it is related, but now I have extensive repairs for coolant flushing/ radiator hoses and coolant hoses, metal fuel lines, and thermostat… I am just disappointed that a recall is valid on the same model and year as mine, I was unaware and now I have a $8,570. 40 quote to get this fixed. I am wondering if the egr cooler failure has led to this massive problem as I am aware the engine oil cooler and egr cooler are releated along with manifold function/ efficiency. Now I have oil and coolant mixing in my system… if my eco diesel Jeep were included in the original recall, I may not be dealing with this unexpected visit. Respectfully, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/20/2024

I already complained before about the engine overheating in the car not being able to start so it took the car over to authorized dealership to where I could have my oil change done and the dealer noticed that there is engine oil that has mixed in to my coolant reservoir and that now I might have a blown head gasket after contacting several different dealerships about the recall they informed me that everything happened fixed on my vehicle which I have not been aware of since I've had the vehicle everything that's been repaired has been out of my own pocket and expenses the recall is for a egr cooler which is the same recall that I've complained about numerous times I'm not able to drive the vehicle and I'm looking at repairs of anywhere to four to $10,000 now to replace my whole engine.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/20/2024

A recall NHTSA 20v-699 was issued on our vehicle in March 2021. This is related to a fire hazard. The recall repair was done and component exchanged, now 3 years later and 35,000 miles we have exactly the same issue. A cracked egr cooler, same as previous. My concern is that the replaced part is from the same batch as originally and as such they replaced a dangerous part with another dangerous part. The dealer and fca refuses to replace the part as they say the recall has been closed. I my opinion this fire hazard still exists and repair was not done with a quality product, as it is exactly the same issue. As before.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/03/2024

The egr valve, diesel particulate filter, and intake manifold failed at 88k miles. The egr was replaced at 49k miles on October 4, 2021. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for mil. The estimated repair cost is $11k. All components are filled with carbon deposits. The emissions system should provide a longer life than 88k miles. Is there a possible design defect with the emission ?.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/19/2024

The component that failed is the egr cooler. It’s available upon request for inspection. This component can crack and cause the car to start on fire and it’s currently cracked causing the car to not be able to be driven. The recall occurred in 2020 and I was told by three different dealerships including the one that fixed it foxchrysler in canada and they all stated the recall had been remedied. The vehicle was taken to four separate mechanics for inspection. The warning lamps that are illuminated are the check engine light, service awd, and service electric throttle control module and the code comes back as the egr cooler when the vehicle is ran through the diagnostic system. They first appeared July 19th 2024. I called the dealership I bought the truck from who informed me the whole recall wasn’t fixed and to contact an authorized dealership in my area to get it fixed. (motor cars of lansing, mi) I spoke with the dealership who they referred me to (griffin Jeep and Chrysler s 27th street milwaukee WI) they informed me that the recall was marked as complete effective 03/31/2021 and to call the dealership they fixed the recall in canada and see if it had a warranty. Spoke with a rep at fox Chrysler in canada who informed me the part only had a two year warranty and would’ve expired 03/31/2023. My car is a used car that only had a one year warranty and I would have to pay for this part that was recalled out of pocket that could run me anywhere from $700-$10,000 which is way more than the car is worth.

In Aug my warning light came on, I called mopar was given a case number it was not until October that I was contacted after repeatedly calling for status. The is was the egr cooler which mopar showed had been replaced when recall issued, I was advised by stellantis to have towed to dealer, it was towed oct 15, dealer advised it was replaced a few years earlier but I provided proof it had not, dealer then replaced but then advised it could not be cranked due to not holding coolant, it was not doing this prior to being towed. I then asked for the outstanding recalls to be completed, they advised no parts…I see now one is showing incomplete that should have been done, the other is a problem with part, I called after receiving a letter those parts were in and they said they were not, I then called you and was advised I am on a list to have this completed. I have been having to rent cars to get me to dr appointments since August. It is currently in the shop having the dpf r.

15 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/29/2022

Their is oil being introduced into the coolant reservoirs. Jeep Grand Cherokee ecodiesel. The vehicle are having failed oil coolers that stemmed from the failed egr coolers. The driving of these vehicles for over a year awaiting a fix has caused the engines to have other failures. There has been over 10 recalls on these ecodiesels since I bought the Jeep brand new in 2014. They made a deal with the epa lawsuit and did a software patch which changed the engine function issues, they did a patch on the power train control module, transmission control module, and apparently the ecm engine control module. I’ve had nothing but “check engine” light codes in since the first patch in 2016 that they didn’t put in the records, I have the work order showing the patch. In 2019 the lawsuit the epa approved for them, allowed them to place a new patch that caused other components to continue to malfunction like the” high pressure fuel pump now. The dealerships are saying the failures aren’t due to their negligence and are causing consumers to deal with costly repairs that’s not their faults. I got a bill for $29,000 for a new engine, they said my Jeep was under extended warranty but don’t want to help foot the repairs. Also stated they would reimburse recall work that customers paid for prior to recalls coming out within 60 days, but it has taken me over 4 years to try and get reimbursed. My car is at the dealership now and has been down since April 29, 2022.

16 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/25/2022

Vehicle is making a knocking noise when in drive and fully stopped. This occurs after drive the vehicle for about 10 miles, once the engine warms up. I've been told that it was a purge selenoid and it's normal. Was also told it was an egr valve and also advised that it was the air suspension. Meanwhile they have a open star case stating it's the motor mounts. 100s of people are having the same issue on the facebook group I'm in, as well as forums and no one is getting anywhere. Also my radio system is making a hissing noise and the android auto connection is not stable and doesn't stay connected. They currently have no fix for this. My steering wheel is slightly off to the right to go straight. They stated the alignment is good and that it does that because incase the driver falls asleep, it would drive them off the road instead of into oncoming traffic. That's sounds extremely bogus and very dangerous.

17 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/07/2022

Recall for diesel egr cooler has been requested by me to get fixed on multiple occasions. The dealership keeps telling me they do not have the parts. Now my check light engine is on and my car is leaking coolant profusely.

18 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/08/2022

My 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 75th edition 3. 0l ecodiesel stalled with no warning while driving on a two lane highway in the middle of nowhere, new mexico. No warning lights, until the entire dashboard turned on and the car starting losing speed and power. I don't know how I was lucky enough to make it to the shoulder. I sat there for 2 hours with my 2 kids in the car waiting for a tow, 8 hours from home. I have come to find out that there is one recall for my egr but when taken to the dealership I was told that my car was built with magnetic material attached to the tone wheel which provides a signal to the crankshaft position sensor and was lost therefore leaving me stalled and stranded. I have looked up my recalls and that one is not on there! how is that possible.

20 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/11/2021

The egr cooler was not properly installed by the manufacturer which has caused several failures to the vehicles engine components (such as oil cooler, engine coolant system, and the egr itself). Additionally, the egr cooler has an active safety recall due to risk of engine explosion and vehicle fire. The parts and remedy for this recall have been available since November. This repair is covered under both the active recall as well as an extended emissions warranty that was required by a federal judge in the settlement agreement for the emissions scandal which fca settled with the federal courts to provide remedies to its customers. Thus far, fca has not honored the terms of this federally required extended emissions warranty on two separate occasions. I have contacted three separate dealers and fca on two occasions. Fca has refused to assist in the egr repairs and the dealers have refused to perform the repairs. I’ve not been able to get any assistance from fca, or the dealers. My egr cooler is a safety risk and this should be addressed immediately. I have been working to get this resolved with Jeep since March 12th. I need the law to be enforced.

21 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/09/2021

According to the recall notice I received in the mail, the egr cooler needs to be replaced. I scheduled an appointment and took the vehicle in. Upon arrival I was told that, yes there is a repair solution but that the parts are not available. But that they would place an order and notify me when it arrives. It has been several months and still no repair. *note* I am having to add engine coolant on a regular basis.

22 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/28/2021

I bought my Jeep Grand Cherokee in the end of February 2021 with approx. 52,000 miles on it. All work done to it after this point has been under warranty with me paying all of the deductibles for the warranty work. A couple of weeks after purchase, the problems began. It was overheating, white steam coming out of my exhaust pipes, vibrating very badly, shutting down at traffic lights, amongst other symptoms. As of now, the dealership has replaced 3 new water pumps, and 2 new cylinder heads (both times were issues with the 3rd cylinder). This go round, it’s now back in the shop with another misfire with cylinder 3. The dealership has also replaced the egr cooler, ignition coil, motor mounts, coolant flush, lifters & rockers & it is still in the shop. All repairs done by the same shop (different technicians throughout the past year and a half). I thought it might qualify under the lemon law and called an attorney who asked me some questions but said that it does not qualify in my state under the lemon law because it’s now past the 60,000 milestone. It now has approximately 85,000 miles on it. I have been without a vehicle approximately 6 months out of the past year and a half and multiple rental car fees (though the dealership absorbed the majority of the fees when it was in the shop this past June/July). A few of the reasons all of this is most upsetting to - my daughter and I have broken down on the side of a busy interstate twice (once in the middle of the night) and had to try to get off of the interstate safely so we could be towed - I have been faithfully paying my 'new-to-me' car note ever since I bought it but haven't had much of a chance to drive my 'new' vehicle - my daughter recently got her driver's permit & can't learn how to drive as we are in a rental & it is against the rental company policy to allow anyone else to drive their vehicles. - I have had to take off of work many hours due to this this is holding up our lives!.

23 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/05/2021

Chrysler has a recall for the egr cooler on the Dodge ram ecodiesel (vb1/NHTSA 19v-757) this is the same engine and egr cooler as the Jeep Grand Cherokee ecodiesel. There have been reports of Grand Cherokee 3. 0 ecodiesel vehicles catching fire and burning to the ground. Jeep currently does not have a fix for this issue or parts for it, yet we are still allowed to drive around in our vehicles. This is unacceptable.

24 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/05/2021

Hello, my vehicle has had a number of recalls for emissions and drive train. Due the number of modifications by Jeep, my vehicle's performance has been negatively affected to a point that sometimes it is dangerous to drive. Every software update results in lower mileage and sluggish performance. Now Jeep is slow rolling egr recall and letting a dangerous situation to develop.

25 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/15/2021

This 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee ecodiesel has an open recall for the egr system (recall w79). On December 29, 2020, the malfunction indicator light came on. I called the dealer (turnersville Jeep) for an appointment on Monday, January 4, 2021. The first available appointment was on Tuesday, January 12 2021. This dealer kept the vehicle until Friday, January 15. This dealer declined to repair the egr system under the w79 recall, but did replace all fuel injectors and the fuel tubes after finding the fuel injectors restricted. This dealer then cleared the dtc p026c-00 and performed a stationary regeneration. I picked the vehicle up at 5:15 pm on Friday, January 15, 2021 and proceeded to road test the vehicle. After about 75 miles of driving, I suffered a exteme and sudden loss of power at approximately 7:30 pm; the dash indicators included the malfunction indicator lamp, an error regarding the throttle body, and an error that the oil pressure was low. As I coasted to a stop, smoke began to rapidly pour from the hood cover and began to enter the cabin through the hvac vents. I vacated the vehicle immediately and under some duress. The smoke continued to billow from the engine area of the vehicle and I could see it continue to enter the cabin. At approximately 9:00 pm on January 15, the vehicle was delivered by flatbed to pellegrino Jeep. I spoke with the pellegrino Jeep service department on Saturday, January 16, 2021, but they were unable to provide a commitment to examine the vehicle. I opened case #78239258 with fca (Jeep) us llc customer service. As of January 20 at 11:30 am, I do not have feedback on this case. The dealer has also provided no commitment to examine the vehicle. I believe this vehicle suffered a failure due to the inability of fca and it's dealers to remediate recall w79.

26 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/15/2020

Nothing has happened yet but there is a recall out (w79) to replace the egr cooler as an engine fire could occur. Was notified of this recall nearly 4 months ago and yet Jeep says there are still no parts available to do it. Can you get on their case to get this done?.

27 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/11/2020

I was traveling at a 60mph speed on a highway when I noticed that my oil temp light came on and read 285 degrees in my options list yet the stationary oil temp read in the middle. I pulled over, let the engine cool, checked the oil and coolant (all fine). After 45 minutes, it cooled to about 130 degrees, so I continued on. I drove about a mile when it heated back up again, the Jeep jerked, smoke started to come out of the engine, and it turned off. I luckily was able to turn into a parking lot before it died. Since I was out of state traveling and it was late in the evening, I needed to find a place to stay if my Jeep would start (it did). I found a hotel 3 miles away from my location. The engine had cooled, I had opened the hood and saw no damage. I drove 35mph for the 3 miles as I watched the oil temp climb. I made it to the hotel, was parking when the cabin filled with smoke. I opened the windows, shut off the Jeep and got out. I did see flames come out of the hood and something on fire fell from under the engine area. I called 911. Something in the engine compartment actually put the fire out before the fire department arrived. They still proceeded to douse the engine and disconnect the battery. I then found out there was a recall (w79) on the 2015 ecodiesel Jeep Grand Cherokees for the (erg) exhaust gas recirculation coolers that are susceptible to thermal fatigue. This can cause the cooler to crack, allow preheated, vaporized coolant to interact with other hydrocarbons and air in the system that may lead to a vehicle fire. This recall was not scheduled to officially be released until December 31, 2020. 20 days after my Jeep fire.

28 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/21/2020

While driving the vehicle and towing my boat (approx 4500lbs) for the previous hour or so on state highway between 50-65 mph with some stoplights (not interstate), the check engine light (cel) came on and the driver interface on the instrument cluster came on displaying something to the effect of "service electronic throttle control system". Continued driving approximately 2 miles to get to an intersection to turn off the main road. Once stopped at the stoplight I noticed slight smoke coming from the left front corner of the hood by the headlight. I placed the vehicle in park, put the hazards on and pulled the hood release. By the time I exited the vehicle and made my way around the door to the hood, thick black smoke was billowing from all around the hood and flames were noticed coming through body gaps and the grill. Within 30 seconds the entire engine bay and hood was engulfed in flames. I did manage to get the boat unhooked and pushed back and documented with photos. This is the third time these indications (cel) and driver interface displayed the exact same indications. The first time it resolved upon shutting down the vehicle. The second time, it was brought to the dealer. Approx 1 month prior to the fire the dealer found nothing on inspection and reset the code. The code was for excessive egr flow. Additionally the dealer performed any outstanding recalls on the vehicle. This vehicle was equipped with the 3. 0 eco diesel engine and was bought new, dealer, serviced its entire time and had approximately 70k miles on it. I have no doubt this was directly rated to an egr problem that these particular engines have had issues with directly resulting in the fire.

29 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/12/2020

Unable to get parts for the w79 recall for the egr cooler after waiting more than 6 month. Current wait is more than 3 more months. This recall can cause fires to break out in the engine and is not being handled properly by the manufacturer!.

31 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/12/2020

Engine fire occurred while vehicle was in operation. Vehicle has 3. 0l eco diesel engine. Dodge ram 1500 trucks with same engine are on recall (fca vb1/NHTSA 19v-757) for fires due to egr cooler failure, but this vehicle has not been recalled. I am a professional engineer that determined the fire origin and cause of the vehicle is due to the same issue. Yesterday, I participated in a destructive examination of the vehicle with a representative for fca present. However, I am not confident that fca will provide notice of this issue to NHTSA in a timely manner, if fca provides notice at all. The fire originated inside the engine intake consistent with an egr cooler failure. I urge NHTSA to investigate this model vehicle and extend the recall beyond the Dodge ram 1500 trucks. Mileage provided is as of last oil change June 12, 2020. The speed listed is an estimate based on information provided from the person driving the vehicle when the fire occurred.

32 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/29/2020

Was pulling a trailer and vehicle overheated and caused radiator to leak. Dealer states exhaust fumes were present in coolant overflow tank and states engine needs to be replaced, but refuses to believe this is caused by an egr cooler that is under recall.

33 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee
