37 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/09/2007

When I tried to start my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, there was a loud bang and the smell of something that had burned. The next day I had the vehicle towed to the dealer. I was told that the intake manifold blew off and the parts are on backorder. It has now been over a month and I was told it will be another month before parts will be received. The dealer told me they had never seen an incident of the type I experienced. I have contacted Chrysler three times and have been told on each occasion that they will not financially participate in the repair.

39 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

Paint is fading and has started peeling, also chips very easily. Exhaust manifold is also cracked. The paint problem has been steadily getting worse since I first noticed it approx. (2) years ago. The vehicle was still loud after the muffler was changed, dealer diagnosed a cracked exhaust muffler. I contacted Chrysler who would not stand behind the factory problems. They stated the vehicle was to old and had to many miles on it.

40 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/06/2007

I understand that it is a common problem for the ( 1996 and newer Jeep Grand Cherokee )exhaust manifold. They develop an exhaust leak, where the weld of the 2 exhaust pipes off of the engine meet the flange ( leak at weld of flange ) for the transfer to a single exhaust pipe. I've just had a recall completed by Jeep because of the rattle in the catalytic converter, which I was told posed an emissions question, but the exhaust manifold leak posses a much larger problem not only with exhaust leak of hot gases of CO, and the effectiveness of the catalytic converter.

41 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/29/2006

: the contact stated the oil gauge failed to indicate the oil level; the front end vibrated badly at 50 mph, and the wheels shook and made a clicking sound while making a turn in either direction, which caused a vibration felt through the steering wheel. In addition, black smoke discharged from the tail pipe and the engine emitted a hesitation. When inspected by an independent mechanic, oil and gas were visible on the spark plugs. The service dealer and manufacturer were notified.

42 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/12/2005

Consumer noticed a chirping noise coming from the front wheels that disappeared when the brakes were applied. The dealer was unable to correct the problem the consumer was referring to. The consumer had a list of problems that needed to be corrected on the vehicle and they were: rotors and pads front and rear, emergency brake shoes, wiper blades, muffler and tail pipe, oil dip dip stick, right axle boot, emergency brake pivot, the back glass needed to be adjusted, the fuel pump module was replaced, the rear differential bearings were replaced. The consumer was told by customer service there were 2 outstanding recalls on the vehicle and the problem she was describing sounded as though it was related to one of the recalls.

43 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/12/2004

Noise in passenger compartment while sitting idle or at a stop sign as a result of a faulty muffler/exhaust system. Took the vehicle in to dealership who notified Chrysler of the problem. Their solution was a piece of barb welded to the muffler. Did not fix problem. Dealer had engineer come in to look at repair. Engineer said it was good and the noise was "acceptable" because we are only sitting idle for 3% of the time on the road. Dealer acknowledged that the noise was still there and said it was chryslers call and that there is nothing else to do. Took car to muffler shop where they immediately identified problem with existing muffler.

44 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/05/2004

I was told that all exhaust manifolds on the straight 6 cylinder motor developed a crack in the same location due to stress and the replacment parts have been reenginereed to "flex". I fear mild to severe carbon monoxide contamination of the interior cabin could occur common complaints of headaces. This seems to be a very common problem that is very expensive $900 est. That many consumers take a chance and do not make repairs.

45 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/01/2004

Car purchased summer of 2002. Within two years the exhaust manifold part failed causing rumbling noise when car engine is running and slight smell of exhaust. Had a michigan certified mechanic replace the part with a new genuine Jeep exhaust manifold part. New part today is failing again. Told by mechanic part would have to be replaced and that this part is one he has seen fail constantly on Jeeps. Mechanic explained part breaks down from heat/cold expansions and when the exhaust is removed the part is in pieces. I am sending this complaint as there are no recalls from Chrysler on a part that is important relating to engine exhaust that cannot be channel through the exhaust pipes safely since the manifold is being made to break down within a two year period. Check other vehicles (I have owned many other named autos) and you will find this part is not being replaced every year. How can an emissions test be accurate if the exhaust is not being channeled through it's system? the exhaust smell is right by the front car doors, where the manifold part is failing. I hope your department will look into this exhaust problem is dangerous to the environment and humans.

46 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/03/2003

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited, will not pass safety inspection because it's exhaust manifold is cracked and leaks exhaust gases. The problem seems to be common among Grand Cherokee owners with the 6 cylinder, 4 l engine. The manifold failed due to a stress crack that developed from uneven expansion and contraction during normal operation. The local Jeep/Chrysler dealer informed me that the part fails in almost all 6 cylinder Jeep cherokees and that the present replacement parts are redesigned not to break from stress cracks from normal heating. This tells me that the manufacturer knows of the safety problem, has redesigned it, and is trying to make money off the safety failure. The replacement expense for this safety inspection failure is very high. Estimated cost of the replacing the defective manifold by the dealer is $1100 to $1200. I have found that this is a very common problem and that a great percentage of Grand Cherokees with the 6 cyl. , 4 l. , engine experienced a safety defect from a cracked exhaust manifold. This is my third Jeep and for the price paid I expected higher quality and a safer vehicle.

47 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/23/2003

Exhaust manifold broke and engine caught on fire. Dealer notified.

48 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/17/2003

Exhaust manifold cracked. As a result oil leaks into the engine compartment. Consumer is concerned that the vehicle will catch on fire.

49 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

My Jeep has been really loud for sometime and is getting louder. It is when you start it up (really bad) and the whole time it's running. I ask my mechanic and he said to try a heat riser. When we went to the Jeep dealer to order it, the parts guy said we could try the heat riser, but more than likely it was a cracked/busted manifold. When we looke, the manifold is cracked in two or three places. I have contacted several mechanics in my area. . . They all say the same thing. . . . Manifolds on these Jeeps are bad about cracking. The manifold lists for $431 and they say about $200 to put one in. Plus, I have been told that it's no good to fix the one from the manufacturer by welding it, because it will crack again. The suggestion I am getting is to buy a new aftermarket manifold. . . All the mechanics say they work better because they have 2 pieces on them that give for extra support. I think this is really sad. One single mechanic in the small town I live in has replaced at least 5 in the past year. I think this is overwhelming! there seems to be a defect in this part to me.

50 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/29/2003

Exhaust manifold has cracked. Local dealer says this is common and will replace with after market manifold. They use after market because factory manifold has a design flaw.

51 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/18/2003

Dealer identified a cracked exhaust manifold in my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The car only has 49,600 miles and is not used for off-road driving. I believe there is a manufacturer defect. Most owners, as in my case, find out too late. There seems to be increasing and recurring incidents with the 4. 0l engines. Chrysler redesigned the 1999 models without notifying 1998 owners of the manifold problem. Chrysler is not willing to pay for any of the $1200 plus it will cost me to repair.

52 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/10/2003

Intake manifold has a 6 inch crack in it and the fumes are seeping into vehicle through the air conditioner vents.

53 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/29/2003

My 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo has had a cracked exhaust manifold for some time now. The dealership knows the price for one off the top of their head without looking it up. Dust or water can get in there and create engine failure, it can also cause the engine to get to hot and cause a fire. Carbon monoxide leaks into the cabin when the windows are up and the heater is on.

54 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/18/2003

The vehicle stalled, the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined the engine had blown. The consumer received a recall related to this problem and requested that Chrysler provide assistance for the cost of repairs. Ph.

55 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/04/2003

Broken exhaust manifold, allowing exhaust gases to exit exhaust system. Allowing gases to enter passenger compartment possibly causing death from carbon monoxide poisoning. This is the second time that I had to replace this manifold. At a cost of $1127. 00 each time.

56 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/11/2002

The intake manifold failed.

57 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/07/2002

On December 7, 2002 my family and I (including my 2 1/2 year old daughter) were driving down the new jersey turnpike and our 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught fire. A state trooper aided us in putting the fire out and we had the vehicle towed off of the interstate. Upon our return home that evening we discovered a daimler Chrysler recall notice (recall: b06) in the mail stating that a defect in the exhaust manifold may result in and underhood fire. Daimler Chrysler has since informed us that because the vehicle is over 3 years old they will not reimburse us for the costs of repair or provide an explanation as to how or why the fire ocurred.

58 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/02/2002

Exhaust manifold gasket over heated and burned up in turn had caused over heating in the torque converter. This led to transmission failure. Keyless entry lock had malfunction also.

59 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/02/2002

Rear axle bearings replaced twice now. Brake rotor warpage a direct result of caliper design. Replaced rotors with after market and still warped. Replaced calipers with after market and needed $115. 00 repairs to rotors that had 8000 miles on them. Engine oil leak and odor from manifold gasket leak at front og engine. Door check roller on drivers door broke off completely. May not be a warranty repair. Will invoke lemon law if rear bearings fail another time. Chrysler built a real piece of garbage!!!.

60 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/30/2002

When driving and applying brakes vehicle will shake and shimmy very hard. Consumer believes that rotors are defective, the dealer found that the rotors were warped and replaced them under warranty, there is an odor and humming sound coming from the a/c when turning on the system, the deler has been unable to duplicate the problem, the vehicle experienced low idle while in gear, the dealer found it necessary to flash the pcm, exhaust manifold was loose causing it to make a rattling noise.

61 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/26/2002

Cracked exhaust manifold because of poor support (manufacturer problem).

62 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/04/2002

The exhaust manifold is cracked. I decided to have a tune up and discovered the problem through the dealer. It seems to be a relatively new vehicle for this type of part to failure.

63 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/07/2002

I have owned a Jeep for 3 years. Since I have purchased the Jeep I have had nothing but problems. The rotors went bad, the steering manifold went bad, the engine went bad, and the motor in the window went bad and broke. Now I have replaced my left rear brake light six or seven times. It slowly started to fade out, and now the entire light goes out at night when our lights are turned on and we have to depress the brake. It is also barely noticeable during the day. We thought we had a faulty wire, but when we took it to a shop to have them look at it, they said that in every Jeep that has been brought in with the same problem has been the entire light and casing. The bulb gets too hot and warps the casing that holds the light. So the light no longer touches the casing and will no longer work. They told us also that our right rear light is warping also, so both of them need to be replaced. Shouldn't this be a recall, since it is happening to so many Jeeps. And shouldn't it be a recall since they have a rebuilt one knowing the old ones are no good? I don't like it , I don't like knowing my tail lights are getting so hot that it is melting the casing. Could you please let me know about this!.

64 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/21/2001

Exhaust manifold cracked, allowing fumes to leak into passengers compartment. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated it was a very common problem, replacement part was modified due to defect and design of original part.

65 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/11/2001

While driving manifold gasket overheated, and brakes pulsated.

66 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/22/2001

Jeep was in for maintenance, dealer noticed cracked exhaust manifold. Mechanic stated that these crack all the time and in the same place. The dealership new exactly how much it would cost to fix the problem. Dealer said Jeep redesigned the manifold, due to many failures. I believe this item should be recalled because many others have had to replace the same item often. This is not normal wear and tear, this was due to poor design and should be replaced due to the danger involved with exhaust entering the car. If the dealer had not of pointed this out, I would not have ever known. Jeep customer svc was notified of my feelings and opened a file on this matter. Thank you!!!!!.

67 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/08/2001

Had Jeep in for ac problem, dealer noticed cracked exhaust manifold. I suspected this before, as engine sounded different. In talking with service rep, they advised "we have seen a lot of these, it cracks in a curved part of the manifold. The replacement manifold has a flexible curve where the crack occurs". It cost me $881. 88 to have the replacement done. Based on the service reps comment, sounds like a design defect.

68 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/16/2001

I have taken my vehicle to 3 different places to get estimates on what it will cost me to have it fixed. All 3 of them stated to me that they are always fixing this problems on the Jeeps. That where the pipes coming out of the manifold start to split is where it is cracking. That it is a weak spot. One of the places I took it to showed me. He had 3 different manifolds there and showed me and all 3 of them were cracked in the same spot as mine. He used to work for Chrysler and said that they had even new ones coming back with the same problem in the same spot. If there are that many defects, shouldn't they have to redo the design or something to make them last. These are stainless steel pipes and should not be that easy to crack.

69 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/20/2001

Manifold has 2 cracks in it. Quoted $1500 to fix it by dealership service center. Many friends have told me that it is a design problem, manifolds are not supposed to crack.

70 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/05/2000

Consumer heard a loud rattling noise coming from vehcile. It was taken to dealer on 07-Aug-2000 and catalytic converter was replaced. On 11-Nov-2000, it came apart & shattered in exhaust. Tailpipe, muffler, exhaust hanger & gasket were replaced. Dealer said they have seen this happening a few times, but it seemed early for it to be replaced.
