The check engine light comes on when the fuel gauge drops below 3/4 full and then shuts off when the full gauge reads 1/4 full. The problem is that when the light comes on it disables the remote start function which is sorely missed in new england winters. This have happened at least 10 times this winter if not more and the dealer could not help.

The contact owns a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 55 mph, a warning light illuminated, a chime sounded, and the gas gauge indicated that the vehicle was out of fuel. The gas gauge then went back up, indicating that fuel was present and the warning light dimmed. The weather was sunny and approximately 80 degrees. The contact believes that his vehicle should be included in recall # 97v194000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly). The current and failure mileages were 25,386.

I have a 96 Grand Cherokee ltd 4x4 with 115k miles. Since it turned 65k miles I have replaced the brake pads and drums 3 times. I have water leaks in the seat belt wells, the passenger side window, and the belts are wet when it rains. Today, water is pooling in the floor of the driver's side. Water pours from just above the accelerator. Must be from a/c?the rear door hatch has jammed in lock position. The electronic mileage/ fuel readout (on ceiling module) fluctuates wildly and is inaccurate. The catalytic converter went out at 64,975 miles. Now have a crack in the exhaust manifold, quoted $1200 by dealer to repair. I have gone through stock 3 radios, tuner problems. Massive a/c problems in past. I paid a non dealer to repair it, the repairs held for 30 days and same problem started again. Then had dealer repair and it was a recall item so was covered after I'd paid for 2 prev repair jobs at $1100 total. The power steering pump went out at 90k miles. Replaced so many other parts, I'd have to refer to the service records for more details. This list is only from memory. Total cost over 3 yrs. . . . Around $4000! OH, and the rear hatch/door paint is faded and dull, totally different from the rest of the car. All black metal painted parts paint is coming off. Has been for couple of years. Also the roof rattle really loud at over 50mph. The power outlet came apart still attached to my phone cord one day. Finally, the front end has some problem with the axle? and will cost approx $700 to repair. I thought I had a lemon until I talked with 3 other Jeep owners, they've had similar problems. Do we have any recourse with Chrysler over these vehicles. . . I am considering involving an attny.

The fuel gauge system indicator malfunctioned. Always read full tank, even when the tank was empty, the dealer replaced a sensor at consumer's expense of $585. 00.
Nhtsa campaign 97v194000. Daimler Chrysler issued a fuel level sending unit recall. This vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. Consumer had a difficult time determining how much fuel was in the gas tank.
The gas gauge on my Jeep does not accurately reflect the amount of gas left. The tank may report there is gas remaining when empty or that there is no gas when full. The gauge may start and stop working several times while driving in a single trip, or never accurately report the gas level at all.
The gas gauge registered a false reading of the gasoline which caused the vehicle to run out of gas. The driver drove the vehicle to the dealer. The mechanic informed the driver that the fuel gauge system needed replacing due to a worn sensor. Please fill in additional information.

Consumer's vehicle experienced the same problem as mentioned in NHTSA recall 97v19400 concerning fuel gauge system. The fuel tank mounted fuel level sending unit accuracy can degrade overtime, indicating significantly more fuel in reserve than is actually present. Dealer indicated this vehicle had the same problem but was not included in the recall due to VIN.
1997 Jeep cherokee, which was part of gas tank recall in 1998 for failure of float in the gas tank, ran out of gas again on freeway, without any notice. Appears that the lifespan of the float replacement could now be over.
Recall 97v194000; while driving fuel gauge indicated that tank was half full even though vehicle ran out of gas. Mechanic at dealership had replaced fuel gauge twice. Russell Dodge, 3500 west tennessee st, tallahassee FL 850575-4111.
While driving fuel gauge showed the wrong fuel level. This could have caused the consumer to run out of gas without warning. The consumer was having the same problem as stated in recall 97v194000. Dealership would not repair vehicle because the VIN number was not included.
I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4 which has had 5 fuel pump modules and one gas tank replaced since 08. 10. 2000. The vehicle is in need of another fuel pump module. The dealers have difficulty in replicating the condition. The fuel gauge is providing false readings; typically giving an empty tank reading when full, 3/4 full or 3/4 empty. I have heard the same complaint from numerous other Grand Cherokee owners. I would think the maker/dealer would have spotted a trend by now or is overlooking it because of the cost involved with finding a new vendor. All receipt copies of work performed concerning this matter are intact.
Consumer complained about fuel gauge and fuel tank problems. Fuel gauge indicated that tank was full, when in reality it had no gas. Also, there was recall 97v194000 concerning fuel tank. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that there was no recall, and there was nothing they could do about it.
The gas gauge indicator only worked when the gas tank was full.
1. Fuel injector failed causing the engine to misfire and operate on only 5 out of 6 cylinders. 2. In the same cylinder (#6) rod broke, causing engine to blow and need replacement at only 42,000 miles. 3. Power steering pump almost fell off the vehicle. (most likely due to improper installation after engine rebuild). 4. Brakes constantly squeak or make grinding noise when pressure is applied. When temperatures are below 50 degrees, a high pitched whinning noise is heard from underneath the vehicle. Can only be heard when traveling under 45 mph - due to road noise masking the sound. (multiple dealers have not been able to determine what the problem is nor be able to fix it, so constantly whines). 5. Fuel gauge fluctuates when 3/4 full (drops to empty and fuel light turns on, then returns to normal reading. Will continue to do this until tank is 1/4 full). Told this is a problem with the fuel sensor. 6. Transmission is occasionally rough (jerky shifting between 1st and 2nd gears).
Bought used 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee from Jeep dealer in October 2002. I also purchased an extended warranty from Jeep. Auguest 2003 the oil pressure gauge dropped. Stopped Jeep checked oil, all looked fine, restarted, gauge went back to normal. Asked dealer about it, no problem they said. On a trip 300 miles from home, oil pressure gauge dropped again, did the same, gauge came back, but dropped again. Took to service station who couldn't help. Had it towed to dealer. They said gunk build up in the engine, need to repleace at a cost of $9,000. I couldn't prove oil changes ever 3,000 miles (they were done at home), I explained I had only had the Jeep one year, too bad. Extended warrenty won't help. I had engine replace by a friend with a used engine. July 2004, radiator had to be replaced. I called Jeep to ask if they would cover the radiator, they said no, because I couldn't prove I had the radiator flushed at 50,000 miles. I told them I didn't even own the Jeep then, but they said too bad. Someone needs to get Jeep to own up to the problem.
The fuel gauge will randomly go from the correct reading to empty along with the chime telling the driver to stop for refueling soon. I now see that I am not the only one going through this. Will call the dealer on Monday. Clh.
While driving at any speed and with no warning fuel gauge indicator will jump around, reading the wrong gas level. Dealer notified. Consumer also stated the vehicle has moved foward when placed in park.
Fuel sending unit is not working properly. While driving vehicle will shut off without any notice.
Nhtsarecall 97 v 194 002 manufacturer's recall 755 concerning fuel level sending unit. Fuel level sending unit indicated significant more fuel in the tank than actually was present, causing vehicle to stop due to no fuel. Manufacturer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
The failure appears identical to that covered in NHTSA recall 97v1940002, but is not in date range covered by the recall.
When making left turn and having a 1/4 tank of gas or less vehicle will stall. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer indicated that sending unit was defective. Please add VIN.
I purchased this vehicle with a 3 month/3000 mile warranty and since the purchase I am having problems with the gas gauge. For some reason the gauge will instantly drop to empty and then back to the correct level. I've had it to the dealership where I bought it 3 times and they can't find a problem because the gauge is reading normally. Now that the vehicle is out of warranty I am stuck with the burden of a faulty fuel gauge and am wondering how to resolve this problem seeing that the dealership couldn't repair the problem. I also am concerned because I think this problem should of been resolved while it was under warranty. I,m sure as soon as I open my wallet at the dealership the problem will be resolved. I also know that previous year Jeeps had this problem.
Gas gauge on instrument panel intermittently shows incorrect level of fuel in tanks. Dealership has informed consumer that this vehicle is not included in recall 97v194002/ fuel sending unit. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
When I bough my vehicle 2 years ago the gas gauge needle would go to empty, the bell would ring, then go back to full a few times. Dealer said since I bought the car used, and it wasn't a safety issue, they would not cover it in the 30 day warranty. Now the needle is only correnct when it is full. Also, all 4 tires seem to lose air quickly. Brought it to the dealer twice. First time couldn't find a problem, second time they replaced the stems. Now still have the problem. Pretty much sick of wasting my time bringing it somewhere and they can't figure out the problem.
Fuel gauge does not read correct level of fuel actually present in vehicle. Consumer has contacted dealer, and dealer, refused to provide any assistance.
Fuel level sending unit showed inaccurate fuel level, causing car to run out of gas during operation. This was subject of NHTSA recall campaign 97v194000, but the scope of the recall may have been too narrow.
97 v 194 002/fuel level sending unit: vehicle fuel level sending unit indicating significantly more fuel in the tank than is actually present. May not be aware that vehicle is low of fuel, and increasing risk of a crash if vehicle stops due to no fuel. Manufacturer was notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was not covered under recall due to VIN.
Fuel gauge is no longer reading correctly, it goes from empty to full, etc. There was a recall on fuel sending unit, but this vehicle was not affected.
Fuel gauge is not giving an accurate amount of fuel in the tank. Dealership is aware of the problem. The owner states that the malfunctioning fuel sender should have been part of recall 755 because it is failing again after being replaced.
97 v 194 002/fuel level sending unit: vehicle dispaying wrong amount of fuel in vehicle fuel tank. Dealer/mfr's notified and informed that vehicle VIN# was not cover under a mfr's recalls. Please provide further details:.
Fuel sender unit is not registing the proper amount of fuel in fuel tank. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.
Fuel level sending unit misreads the amount of fuel in vehicle. A recall has been issued on vehicle ; however, this vehicle was not included due to VIN.
Gasoline meter is not operable. Consumer filled up half of tank with gasoline, and the meter showed a half of tank. But, vehicle stalled because there was no gasoline inside of vehicle. Consumer took vehicle to dealership, and mechanic told her that it was the fuel sending unit wasn't sending gasoline properly.
