Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have reported 158 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Grand Cherokee based on all problems reported for the Grand Cherokee.
On multiple occasions (at different gas stations) has the gas nozzle auto stop been activated unnecessarily due to the angle of the tank causing gas to only come out for about 5 seconds at a time, which makes it difficult to tell if the tank is full and increases risk of overfill. Currently, on 2 occasions (at different gas stations) has the gas nozzle failed to stop, which cause gas to spray out onto myself and the ground.

After normal gas fueling, car is stationary, fuel meter registers more gas in tank than physically possible. I filled up the tank and meter shows over 400 miles of fuel available. Typically it should be around 330 on a full tank. Also, while driving my mpg meter fluctuates rapidly from 7 mpg to 60 mpg. I see on Jeep forums that this is a common problem with Jeeps. Very upsetting considering all of the recalls already for this model Jeep. Fuel gauge repair estimated at $1400 !! (dependable Jeep - reseda, CA. ).

Severe bucking & jerking while driving. More moderate bucking while car is idle. Codes being thrown are p0406 & p0301. It has also thrown a p0402 as well. I've replaced the egr valve as well as all spark plugs and the problem still has not been solved. My fuel mileage is tanking and driving the Jeep has become almost unbearable.

You cannot properly fill your gas tank without having to manipulate the pump handle the wrong ways. Every time I've had to fill up I have to sit there and constantly have to reset the pump handle because all the pump think the tank is full. This is a safety issue because I never know when the tank is actually full. I've even put the auto fill handle on and when it kicked off the pump went flying out and gas spilled everywhere. I have never had a perfect experience putting gas into my Jeep since I've bought it. I'm always afraid to put the auto fill handle on and take my hand off the pump.

Capless fuel filler assembly on 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited does not allow a standard gas pump to fill tank in a "normal" manner when vehicle is parked at a gas station pump and is turned off. User has to hold pump handle gently in order to dispense fuel. Took my vehicle in for diagnostic service and was told the fuel filler assembly had to be replaced at a cost to me of $316. 00 plus sales tax, as well as a $98 diagnostic fee, as my vehicle is out of the 36,000 mile warranty period. I have read on several internet sites that models of Jeeps and Dodge durango have the same issue. I feel that this should be a recall for a faulty part for this model year. I have been driving for 27 years and have owned 3 other Jeep Grand Cherokees, a Honda civic, and a kia sorento and have never had this problem with any other vehicle. I also travel frequently for work and have driven numerous models of vehicles as rentals and have never encountered this issue.

Every time I fill up my gas tank my vehicle will stall out. This has been going on for months now. I took it to the dealership and they are telling me this was a known error and chryster has made modifications to the gas tank/vaper lock but I am responsible for the $1600 it will cost to fix it. If this is a known defect, then it should be covered under a recall.
The part of factory installed gas tank skid plate broke. The piece underneath the tank back part fell to the ground while the forward part remained attached. If I was backing up, the plate could have caught on the ground forcing plate into the gas tank spilling gas and possibly causing a fire from the friction or hot exhaust . At the time I was just pulling out a gas station when I heard a scraping noise. I pulled to the curb and looked under the car and saw the plate hanging there. If I had backed up I could have easily ruptured the gas tank and cause a fire. This plate is attached to the main skid plate by welds and is a very heavy gage and will not bend easily. What would happen if the front of the plate fell while I was traveling down the highway at highway speeds?.

After having my Jeep brand new from the dealer roughly about two weeks after purchasing the check engine light turned on. We bought our Jeep from autonation in spring, TX. We live in galveston county so when it turned on we took it to autozone for the free code check - the code read was p20e8 and it just said emissions code. No specific readout was available for the code detected. The exact Jeep we own is a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee serling edition ecodiesel. We did notice that the def fluid was not properly filled to the full level upon the purchase so figured it could in relation to that. We drove back up to spring to the dealer and told them the issue and they said ok got us in a rental and then would call us as soon as it was ready. Once we picked it up it we asked what was the cause for the code and the technician said OH well it was nothing - just something that we forgot to turn off. On the way home the check engine light again comes back on the dash. We stop by another Jeep dealer in the way home and inquired with them what they thought it might be and they said that whatever the dealership told you cannot be true. Then bill or service or receipt said check engine light p20e8 was found def pump low pressure fault is stored, found tank low with less than 2 inches of fluid in take, found vehicle was not topped off when purchased, added def to tank and cleared codes and verified proper def fluid pressures at injector. The light remains on two days later and now a message pops on my dash and said def system problems see dealer. Normally I would not be so upset but this a brand new car the dealer (not mentioned) was not exactly helpful dropping off or receiving the vehicle back with any kind of helpful information. I love my car and just want to make sure it can be properly fixed so I hopefully do not have to worry about my safety or the integrity of my car.
When I try to put gas into my tank, the pump cuts off. It takes five minutes to get $16 worth of gas! it's getting worse. I've tried different pumps, different gas stations nothing helps. The dealer claims to know nothing about it. Today, the gas was spit back out! so I have shoes and feet soaked in gas! it is a capless gas tank.
The fuel tank is hard to fill and the fuel fill nozzle shuts off repeatedly while fueling.

Tl the contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the fuel tank gathered rust and corrosion. Also, the undercarriage was corroded and pieces were falling off. The contact believed that the fuel tank cover may have fallen off and it was wet; however, the contact was unsure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.
While trying to pump gas, the pump would pop closed as if the gas tank was full when in actuality it had only just started to pump. It would continue to do that even after adjusting how the pump sat in the tank. It took roughly 15 minutes to pump a couple gallons of gas. The car has now done this twice at different pumps at different gas stations.
Tl the contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact noticed that the fuel tank support system was rusted. The vehicle was taken to williams brothers Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram of dundee (4706 ann arbor rd, dundee, mi 48131) where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank was rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 177,804.
Since the day I purchased the car, the car does not easily accept fuel. It cuts me off. It can take 30 minutes to fill the tank, an ounce at a time.
Bought my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee trailhawk used with 10,600 miles on it. Gas issues from the get when getting gas, the gas pump shuts off ever few seconds like the gas tank is full only allowing a few cents worth of gas to actually go in the vehicle. I have been to multiple gas stations and the same issue occurs at all of them, tried turning the nozzle to different angles and almost holding it all the way out of and in the tank, it does not matter though. Air suspension: after owning the Jeep for 3 months, one Monday morning when I turned it on to go to work a message popped up saying "service air suspension system immediately", mileage was at 14,990. I turned the vehicle off and one two more times before driving it, drove to work and restarted it after I parked, each time the same message came on immediately. I called the closest Jeep dealership, they said it was ok to drive and could not see the Jeep until the following Monday. Dropped the Jeep off, their system said the module was bad, they replaced it, this did not work. They contacted Chrysler, no fix has occured, multiple attempts but nothing has worked. 3. 5 weeks and still counting without my Jeep. The Jeep garage said they do not know how much longer bc they do not know the solution and are waiting on Jeep engineers to tell them what to try next. Sounds like the engineers are just trying experiments to see what will work. When waiting on the module to come in the first week I asked if I could drive it until the piece came and was told it was not safe to drive. Very unpleased.
Safety complaint - fire/explosion: gasoline fumes outside of car and occasionally inside of car. Jeep dealer states faulty design/manufacture/assembly of gas tank and/or parts resulted in o-ring failure causing engine light to go on with codes for evac failure. Fumes at minimum when air temp below freezing as seals freeze shut and engine light stops going on. When air temperature is above freezing, fumes resume, engine light goes on with same evac codes and gasoline fumes can be detected outside and inside of car. Jeep dealer stated parts are minimum costs but labor to remove/replace tank and parts - `$2,500. Safety issue. Called Chrysler a dozen times and no follow up. Case #s 32808988, 32840898, 33072326 filed, no follow up. Requesting Chrysler-Jeep for "good will" repair or share cost repair for faulty manufacture leading to extreme safety issue. Filed odi with NHTSA # 11048089 on 11/22/17 - spoke to dawn.

Was fueling up today and the pump was turning off like I was topped off but my gage was on e. Then with me holding the pump gas started shooting out onto me and my SUV. I had gas all over the side of my car and after I paid I had a large puddle under my car also. I only fill up at meijer and normally get 22 gallons in my tank. I was only able to get 11 gallons in. My SUV only has 4600 miles on it. Something is wrong here.
Fuel tank fill line (neck) required replacement due to fuel vapor system leakage. This caused the check engine light to illuminate. Dealer indicated no gross corrosion but some evidence of corrosion on the neck, and system identified loss of vapor recovery.
The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that there was a progressing fuel odor coming from the rear of the vehicle. The dealer (acton Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram, 196 great rd, acton, MA 01720, (978) 263-7300) diagnosed that there was an internal leak on the top of the tank. The dealer stated that the o ring and retainer needed to be replaced. In addition, the vehicle was also inspected and diagnosed by an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that they would follow-up to determine if they would provide a solution. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
I have owned my Jeep for 3 yrs now and its has been a wonderful vehicle but last yr I noticed the gas tank cover starting to hang down. Now there is a big piece about to fall off and the tank is completly exposed. I have read a lot about this issue and am not sure what is going on. It seems that I may be able to have a hitch installed and maybe not. It seems there is a huge issue with this and is my tank going to just fall down one day. Also why cannot any one get the air bag restraint module for the recall of my vehicle. What good is having a recall if they can drag their feet. I just would appreciate some info and help to get my car fixed. Thank you.
While I was pumping gas, fuel started pooling under my vehicle. I was too scared to start it drive it, so, I had it towed to the dealer. A week and a half later, I'm still without a car as the dealer is awaiting a new gas tank to be delivered. They informed me it was a defect in the gas tank!!!! what if this would have happened on the highway!!!! I am so disappointed and scared now to even drive it when it gets fixed. Not a comforting feeling that I could've exploded.
Fuel delivery system (notably tank filler and related emissions equipment) poorly designed to fail just after California 50k mileage warranty. Dealer wants $800 to fix a problem the mfg. Designed. Alternator recall-with no related parts to repair-driving and waiting for the vehicle to erupt into a ball of fire is unacceptable. What components are being installed on 2018 models? why can't those parts be installed on my 2014? I am being prejudiced against, as I cannot legally (thanks to ab 217) trade the vehicle in, as no dealer can resell it with an open safety recall!! I need to get another car-but I can't!!!!.
Diesel fuel is leaking from bottom of the tank. Insufficient space between factory integrated skid plate/ hangar traps salt and grim/ debris . Insufficient drainage leads to fuel tank rotting from exterior side and leak raw diesel fuel onto roadways and parking surfaces.

The contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the fuel tank was below the bumper. The dealer riverhead Dodge (located at 642 w main st, riverhead, NY 11901; (631) 727-1040) was contacted and confirmed that there was nothing the dealer could do since there was no recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted at 866-814-1480 and stated that there was no recalls and nothing could be done. The contact was advised to take the vehicle for an inspection. The failure mileage was 103,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving at unknown speeds, the contact looked through the rearview mirror and noticed metal debris falling from underneath the vehicle. The contact pulled the vehicle off the roadway to inspect underneath it and noticed that the skid plate under the fuel tank was bent and rotting away. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was previously at the dealer (bob richards Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram 1666 jefferson davis hwy, graniteville, SC 29829 (855) 984-5458) for power steering replacement and transmission inspection. While the vehicle was on the lift for the transmission inspection, the dealer's mechanic noticed that the skid plate was damaged, which could have been a fire hazard with a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken back to bob richards Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram (1666 jefferson davis hwy, graniteville, SC 29829 (855) 984-5458) where it was diagnosed that the skid plate was gone and needed replacement. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for repairs due to the less expensive cost. The contact also stated that the vehicle was serviced per NHTSA campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system), but the failure continued and the ignition would inadvertently turn. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact believed that the failure was related to the wiring harness and not the ignition switch. When the vehicle was started and the engine was turned off, it restarted itself seconds later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 152,000.

SUV would not start, towed to a local mechanic, replaced air metering valve, still did not start. Was informed by my mechanic there is a recall on the sensor in the fuel tank but I was not told by Chrysler anything about this problem when the truck was in the shop four other times for two other recalls. Truck must be towed to Chrysler so they can look at this problem.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the capless fuel tank leaked fuel from the nozzle and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the seal needed to be replaced. The failure was not remedied. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
I was driving my kids to school and heard a strange scraping sound, when I got home I looked under the car and the gas tank was literally falling off the car. The skidplate/support was rotted away and only the back portion of it was holding the gas tank up. Could have been a major problem if I didn't notice the scraping sound and check before I drove it anymore.

Takata recall - had my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee in for the recall in January 2018. They fixed airbag recall and problem seatbelt light constantly being on even when driver is correctly seatbelted in- the light stays on. Now, it is August 27, 2018 and both air bag light and seat belt light are back on. Also, the fuel tank skid plate is completely rusted through. This leaves the gas tank fully exposed, leaving you susceptible to any number of possible scenarios where the fuel tank could ignite, especially if one was to be rear ended by another vehicle. It is not protected by "solution" to replace the tow bar package. I know serveral other people with the same vehicle and fuel tank skid plate rusting through completely. This combination of the takata airbags deploying unexpectedly along with the exposed fuel tank, & truly endangers the lives of the driver, all occupants and potentially anyone else in the vicinity, if one or both we're to explode. Potentially caused me lose of life to those involved.
Fuel tank skid plate/ protective seal rusting excessively in the last 2 months. Now has hole in shield. Vehicle mobile noticed while it was on my lift at the shop.
The diesel tank has started to rust and leak diesel fuel on the ground.
Design traps crud between the skid plate and fuel tank. Over time, removes the paint and causes corrosion. Hole in fuel tank causes loss of fuel. Jeep is selling $1,650 replacement tanks at a rate of 5 per week. Others are trying to repair the tank. . Read more...
