I am concerned that my gas tank is a hazard if in a rear end collision. My gas tank is in the rear of the Jeep and if hit in the back would be the first thing to impact. It looks the same as the Jeeps that have been recalled. But I don't see a recall.

Complaint is about recalls being painful and fca not seeming like it wants to perform them: r60: parts are still not available though we got a notice labeled "important safety recall" months ago. According to our dealer parts are still not available. Apparently this is for an airbag issue but it does not seem that fca is making "every effort to obtain these parts as quickly as possible" as is stated on the recall notice. N47: I have called our local dealer a few times and they refuse to look at it saying that since we don't have an aftermarket trailer hitch that our vehicle is not eligible for any remedy for the exploding gas tanks. Is our vehicle safe to drive???.

Fuel tank has begun leaking diesel with less than 120000 miles on the vehicle. This is clearly the result of a design flaw on these diesel Jeeps. The fuel tank is made of ferrous metal (steel) and is attached to the vehicle with a steel skid plate. There is very little clearance between the skid plate and the fuel tank. This results in the trapping of debris and moisture and resulting in rust damage to the fuel tank. This is a known issue with this vehicle that has been reported on several online consumer forums. . Leak in fuel vapor lines on top of gas tank to the canister and to the purge valve. This must be endemic to the car. There is a 60 backlog on the part. Warning light remains on at all times, stationary or moving.

Takata air bag and fuel tank explosion on impact. As of the date of this report, I did not received any document from Chrysler concerning theses 2 safety issue with my Jeep. We are located in south florida. I've call some Chrysler dealer in my area, and they say that there are no recall for my car concerning theses two safety issue. Nothing has happen so far, but I don't want to continue playing the odd that noting will happen to the life of my wife,my children and myself when driving the Jeep in florida. I will appreciate receiving any input from the NHTSA in that matter, and also a recall notice from Chrysler to fix the two safety issue. The soonest will the best. Thank you for addressing my concern.

We could it to the dealer for the n47 recall and it was there for 24 hours and they said it doesn't need a hitch it doesn't need any protection for the fuel tank. I don't understand why and this recall is a waste of my time and the car can still blow up in a rear end crash,.
Two concerns addressed: fuel tank recall: while this agency has come to an agreement with fca to 'remedy' the fuel tank exploding, I believe your agency did not take into consideration the contributing factor to this type of incident. The manufacturer had installed a protective metal enclosure surrounding the fuel tank models from 1993 to 2006. The problem is that the type of metal used is prone to rusting out that a vast majority of these vehicles have experienced which during a rear end collision exposes the plastic tank to crack and explode. Air bag recall: again owners of the affected vehicles will have to wait many months for replacement parts to be produced. The original recall waiting for parts, owners had to wait 12 months for dealership to obtain parts.

Noticed leaking of diesel from the fuel tank (wet spot in parking). Appears the tank was corroded, and leaking on one of the seams. According to garage, dirt collected between the tank (metal) and the skid plate (metal) resulted in the leak. Looking at some forums, this appears to be happening frequently.
I am still waiting for Chrysler to preform the p41 recall work on my car. Chrysler was found criminally liable for this switch. The recall has been in place since July 2014. I get notices that the part is not available. So far three notices over the past year saying that they don't have a new switch available. Really??? it takes one year to design, manufacturer, and transport an ignition switch, does no one work in detroit. I have had the car not start because of the switch, and when I crank again it starts. I took to dealer for this problem in 2008. I was told that this was normal, the car's computer was re-setting so that I can start. Dealer has gone bankrupt since and closed. I am tired of excuses from Chrysler. When will they do their job and fix this problem. I want this done because my family rides in this car everyday. I am also concerned about the gas tank, because car has been rear-ended three times.

Tl-the contact owns a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph, there was a fuel odor coming from the vehicle. The contact discovered that there was fuel leaking from the fuel tank. The contact mentioned that the fuel gauge indicated low fuel levels immediately after refueling. In addition, the low fuel warning light illuminated on numerous occasions causing the contact to refuel the vehicle often. The vehicle was inspected by a certified mechanic who stated that the failure was due to the plastic fuel line. The contact also stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was included in mhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline , structure). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 210,000. Kc and dr.

I am sending this correspondence after having heard about the safety related defect concerning the fuel tank system integrity in rear-impacts or crashes in certain Jeep products. I own a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I purchased new. My 16 y/o son has driven this vehicle until now. I do not feel that he is safe driving this vehicle now because of the findings in your investigation. I contacted Chrysler's fca recall info center and was told that my Jeep, was not a part of this recall because, "your rear structural reinforcement is better than the ones that have the recall", (the person on the phone gave me his id #dc1571). I asked him exactly how my rear structural reinforcement is better and he admitted that he did not know. I told him my factory installed tow hitch did not cut it and that I wanted him to explain the difference in my vehicle and the ones in the recall. He could not answer and provided me with the customer service phone number so that I could file a complaint. Instead I sent an email to customer service and I should have received a response within 24 hours. I am still waiting. Can you please tell me for sure if your agency recommended that the category that my Jeep falls into,be recalled & measures taken to somehow address the issue? I saw the today show on nbc on Monday morning and it sounded like there would be a solution and Chrysler would cover the cost to fix the vehicles or they would have to offer over market value on a trade in for a different vehicle, or buy back certain vehicles. Can you please provide me with some answers. I could never live with myself if my inaction caused harm to one of my children or someone else that is riding with him or in an accident involving this vehicle. Can you tell me how my vehicle is safer than the vehicles that were "voluntarily recalled" by Chrysler?.
Tl-the contact owns a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. Upon further inspection, the contact noticed that the rear of the vehicle had caught fire where the fuel tank was located. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure) the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,000. Pam.
We went to sternberg (Jeep dealer) in jasper indiana to get the recall problem fixed and they told us it was too rusted and they could not do the needed repairs because of the rust. They did not give us any options as to how to fix this issue with the fuel tank. We have to drive this vehicle because we can not afford to purchase a new vehicle. We can not sell this vehicle because it can not be fixed. So we will be driving around with a vehicle that could explode or catch fire if we are in an accident. I am very upset by this and I really thought the government would do more to help the average consumer. I do know that if anything happens to myself or my family or my dogs my attorney will be contacting you and the Jeep manufacturer. Please let me know how this can be remedied so no one in my family is injured by this vehicle and not driving it is not an option. I believe this would be the case with most of americans as employment is a little difficult to get right now.
Vehicle has gas tank known to explode in rear end collisions.
Although no accident yet, I wanted to say that I have never received any notice from fca about the "customer satisfaction campaign" (because although the gas tank hangs under the rear bumper, year 2000 was not included in the "recall" trailer hitch deal). I bought it new and am still living at the same address. I also wanted to note that another issue with the gc is that the brake and tail lights often stop working. The socket gets scorched and you have to go take it apart, pry the contacts up just right and put aluminum foil under them (google Grand Cherokee brake lights). That works for a while, then you have to do it again. I've been stopped twice in 6 months for it. Sometimes the taillight works but actually goes out when you step on the brake. In any case, having a gas tank prone to exploding when rear ended along with brake light issues is not a good thing. The door locks on the passenger side also cannot be unlocked except from inside the vehicle, while the drivers side have to be locked manually (again, it's all over google. It's called the angry duck for the noise the locks make. I have been waiting for NHTSA to make a other announcement about this - the news was they were going to in a week or so, but that was 3 weeks ago. Thanks pat paulson miapjp@gmail. Com.
Why are some 1993-2004 Jeeps getting recalled do to fires from rear accidents, when all have the same placement of the gas tank behind the rear axle. For less than two hundred dollars for a corective hitch I am not willing to put my family at risk and because I will not nor will I ask others to jeopardize their livelihoods. Please understand my Jeep has been good to me and I to it as it is in great shape, but I do feel a need to express my concerns to all till this matter is settled.
Plastic fuel tank is located in rear of vehicle without adequate protection in the event of a rear end accident vehicle is not equipped with a trailer hitch. I an concerned for the safety of my family in the event of a rear end accident. Brought vehicle to Chrysler dealer, service adviser said there is no recall for this vehicle. . .
Why isn't my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee been recalled about the rear gas tank?there are hazards concerns about getting rear ended. I thought it was a recall.
I want to know if saftey recall for rear end fuel tank explosions is still in effect on these vehicles 01&02.
I want to know if saftey recall for ruptured fuel tanks is still in effect for this vehicle.
I was under the impression that the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee was being recalled for gas tank correction due to the lower part of the tank being exposed to rear impact. When I contacted the dealer, ciconni Chrysler Jeep, they said my car was left out of the recall. This vehicle does not have a trailer hitch. Can you advise me on this matter?.
The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee check engine light was on and stalled then pulled over to side of street then restarted engine. Took to Dodge dealership -had major engine failure no-to low compression on lft cylinder head. Is the fuel tank on this vehicle defective will it leak and explode/catch fire if rear ended? this vehicle was owned by dealership with open/active recall safety defects. Should I be concerned with driving this vehicle. Dealership did not disclose this when they sold the vehicle. How is this legal and allowed to get away with this dangerous vehicle. I don't want to put my family in it. Maybe the dealership owner will put his family in it since he's selling defective cars. I just get another safety recall notice. This vehicle is an accident/fatality waiting to happen. The manufacturer/dealership should refund the purchase price or be criminally charged. I paid thousands of $'s, this vehicle is a total loss who going to buy it.
The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 12v527000 (air bags) and 15v046000 (air bags); however, the part needed was not available within a reasonable timeframe to schedule the repair. The dealer did not give a specific date for when the part would become available. The manufacturer could not provide an estimated date for when the contact's vehicle would receive the recall repair. In addition, the contact stated that there was a failure with the fuel tank assembly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced the fuel tank assembly. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 06e011000 (fuel system, gasoline). The failure mileage was unknown.

Tl- the contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with a plastic fuel tank which was located between the rear axle of the rear pumper and no tow hitch was installed on the vehicle. The contact indicated that the vehicle had not experienced a failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. Jft.
I was told back on 11/21/2014 that my Jeep had a recall on it I was told to contact my local Chrysler dealer so I did the guy was so rude I thought for get this, but then I kept on hearing about Jeeps like mine if rear-ended the gas tanks would burst into flames with no time to get out, so your dead then I saw pictures of many many 2001 just like mine in very graphic detail and because of my husband getting into a bad car accident I started thinking I can't be taking any chances so I started making phone calls again and I spoke to a gentleman at NHTSA who was very nice and said he would keep a eye on my number and be in contact with me but then we moved and so on, but always up dated our contact infor. And also would always go to post office and do the change of address correctly, so if you or any one can help me please let me know, thank you.
I received a recall regarding the tow hitch to protect the gas tank in rear end collisions. I took the vehicle to hertrich of pocomoke, my closest Jeep/Dodge/Ford dealer and they supposedly performed the recall and everything checked out ok with the factory hitch. I took the vehicle home, and several months later was under the Jeep performing some maintenance. When I looked up, I noticed that the tow hitch was severly rusted in some spots, and there were chunks of rust inside the hollow tow hitch. I have been unable to get them to do anything about it, contacting them, and the manufacturer several times.

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact observed the fuel tank door detach. The vehicle was taken to a dealer or diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not provided. The approximate failure mileage was 172,000. Ak.
I received a safety recall notice from Chrysler concerning gas tank problems. I scheduled an appointment and took the car to the dealer. They were to install a trailer hitch to correct the problem. They called and said they could not do the work because the bumper was not in line as it apparently been hit. I was told needed to pay to fix this before they would do the work. The car is 19 years old and Chrysler allowed us to drive it without us knowing about the existing defect. It seems quite unfair that they only have one method to repair their defect and they are then off the hook for their own safety design flaw. This is the essence of my complaint.

The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving at 5 mph, the fuel tank was leaking. The contact stated that the fuel tank leaked only when the fuel tank was filled halfway or full. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,000.
After a safety recall on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee for possible fuel leak and ignition source, the vehicle was inspected by the dealer. The remedy was to install a new oem trailer hitch. An aftermarket trailer hitch was installed by me roughly 15 years ago. The inspection said the existing hitch passed and was ok, therefore the dealer did nothing. My contention is that the existing hitch in service for 15 years is not adequate. Corrosion has taken its toll and half of the structural integrity is gone, therefore it does not offer adequate protection to the tank making this vehicle unsafe. It is evident after waiting years to get this remedied by Chrysler that they are waiting for these older model Jeeps to disappear to the recycle yard and therefore will not rectify the problem.
Fuel tank is held in place by a skid plate (a. K. A. Brush plate). The skid plate has completely rusted out and the fuel tank is in danger of falling off the vehicle.
Sudden shutdown of eco-diesel with fuel still present in tank, dealer identified faulty fuel tank pump. No replacement part available, no estimated time frame for available replacement. Less than 3000 miles on car. Jeep tech in detroit knew of problem indicating that others have reported similar events. Jeep recommendation is keep fuel level above 1/2 tank with no permanent solution or fix available at this time.
I received a safety recall notice # n45/NHTSA 13v-252. This notice explains that the fuel tank on my vehicle has a chance of experiencing a fuel leak during certain types of rear end collisions. Chrysler is supposed to inspect my vehicle and install an original equipment manufacturer (oem) trailer hitch where appropriate, free of charge ( parts and labor ). My car does not have a trailer hitch so this needs to be done. I have called the local Chrysler dealer in my area - rockland Chrysler Jeep on route 304 in nanuet, new york 10954 - several times. First call when I received the recall notice - several months ago, I was told that there is nothing for me to do at this time, someone would contact me. No one ever did. I called the Chrysler group recall assistance center at 1 800 853 1403; I gave them my vehicle identification number and asked for an update on the recall as I was concerned about the safety hazard to me and my family. I was told that my information was noted and I should be hearing from the local Chrysler dealer. I am still waiting. Several weeks passed, no one from the local dealer or Chrysler corp. Contacted me. I called rockland Chrysler and made an appointment for my car to be inspected by their technicians. I further requested that the safety concern noted in this recall be documented by rockland Chrysler. I was told I would have to leave the car with them for several hours because the inspection was somewhat involved. Two days before my appointment, rockland Chrysler called and told me they had to cancel my appointment because the parts were on back order. I asked for an e t a on the parts, was told they did not know - "back ordered". My complaint is that there is an unresolved serious safety defect that needs to be addressed now. Chrysler corp. Seems to be trying to avoid any involvement.
