The rack and pinion on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is completely worn out and makes considerable amounts of noise when decreasing in speed. Car has 47,000 miles and before my warranty was up at 36,000 I took the vehicle in for rear end inspection and they found "no problems. " this is fraud, and now I have to pay $1350 to have the rack and pinion replaced.

The contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo two wheel drive that experienced vibration. The vehicle was taken to a transmission repair shop because the contact suspected it was an issue with the transmission. When the vehicle was placed on racks the mechanic noted it was the carrier bearings in the rear end. Also, the mechanic noted this was a common issue that he was quite familiar with. It was dangerous because there was a risk for the wheel locking while driving. The mechanic would not perform the repairs because the would soon due to the part being defective. The contacted contacted a Chrysler dealer and the manufacturer, and they would not offer any assistance because vehicle was out of warranty. No repairs or corrections have been made at this time. They suggested a friction modifier to remedy this problem.

The engine revved at a very high rpms when starting. When changing gears it made a loud clung sound and wanted to lunge into that direction. The vehicle has never shifted properly between gears. It was almost like it was slipping, and then finding the right gear. It was not a smooth transmission either. Since I purchased the vehicle a little over 1-1/2 years ago the car has been in the shop more than 15 times. The dealers could not find the cause of the problem. I had to replace a transmission sensor, 02 sensor, sun roof, rear end, and cd player. The heater blend door had to be replaced , which didn't sound expensive, but the fix was to remove the entire heater plenum and replace the broken door, stop and drive assembly. Cost $890. 00.

1) my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with 59,000 miles began making an unusual sound while being driven. The sound was constant at all speeds. The vehicle was examined by an independent repair shop, mickey's goodyear of romeoville, IL. 2) the root cause of the noise was detemined to be failure of the axle bearings and differential gear bearings. The failure of this type should not have happened with the low milage of the vehicle. An internet search using google will yield hundreds of complaints by owners of similar make and model. The selling dealer and Chrysler corporation deny that the problem is widespread. I believe that this can be a potentially deadly situation if the failed parts would have caused the rear drivetrain to lockup. 3) the vehicle is currently being worked on to replace both axle shafts and all associated bearings at a replacement cost of approximately $2000. 00 photographs were taken of all failed components. A request to retain all old parts. I have requested 100% reimbursement from Chrysler corporation and I am asking for an investigation to determine how widespread this problem is.

Our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been having rear end problems for the past 1 1/2 years. It started around 45,000 miles and we had a certified mechanic "patch it up in November of 2003. He said it was a regular problem with these vehicles and we would never have the noise go away. The noise has gotten worse and the dealership told us not to drive the Jeep anymore before major repairs are done on the ring and pinion gears and pionion bearins, a cost of $1200. Why are these vehicles needing this major work done at all, much less at 45,000 miles ane now 80,000? this should be a recall and fixed by the manufacturer - obviously this is not normal wear and tear - substandard parts or workmanship have to be involved.
While driving at 50 mph, the steering wheel started to shake and pulled to right. Problem still exists. There was another occasion where the vehicle had gone out of control on wet metal grading due to the problem not being resolved. As of 12/15/03, nothing was done to repair the problem. (the right rear axle housing was bent).

The rear wheels locked up causing the vehicle to spin 180 degrees and crushed with another vehicle. The cause was determined to be a broken clip that holds rear axle in place. Left rear axle, bearing and seal were replaced. The clipper mounting bracket was replaced.
Vehicle was making a loud noise. Took it to dealer who indicated rear end went out on vehicle. Consumer states that carrier bearings and pinion bearings originally failed at 64000 miles and failed again at 94000.
Vehicle has problems in rear end. When braking rear end feels like someone just kicked it, and same thing happens when accelerating. Contacted dealer.
Rearend makes a howling sound between 55-63 mph when I am coasting.
While driving rear end dropped, causing vehicle to be inoperable. Dealer has replaced rear end.
1)"front sway link eliminator bars" both failed after front cv joint replacement causing very poor/dangerous handling. Dealer refuses to consider that prior removal caused damage, says they were rusty. 2) windshield wipers fail while going over bumps. Dealer refuses to cover under warranty. Wants nearly $400 for repair. 3) door locks, dome lights lock and unlock by themselves while vehicle is running or not, causing passangers/keys to be locked inside. Dealer refuses to fix. 4) check engine light comes on and vehicle fails to start, after several minutes vehicle then starts. Dealer refuses to believe there is a problem and won't fix under warranty.
Rear suspension squeaks on drop-off/body roll movements; transmission gear linkage scrubs into park.
The automatic transmission has an erratic hard clunk shift from 1 to 2, as well as a down shift from 3 to 2, dealer says this is normal. The vehicle pulls to the right, dealer confirmed that the left rear toe was out of spec. , dealer slotted rear trailing arm mounting point, but car still pulls to the right.
Vehicle been experiencing unnecessary noise coming from the rear; rear end differential was replaced twice by dealer, and problem still occurring.
Vibration, roaring & rear end noise five weeks after purchasing vehicle. Drive shaft was replaced at 4941 miles. The problem reappeared and the axle assembly was replaced at 13947 miles. Rear assembly replaced again two months later at 16387 miles. Rear end / scraping noise and roaring reappeared. Metal found inside rear differential pan and side berring race damaged. The entire rear end unit was replaced at 28844 miles. Prior to the Jeep being repaired on the previous dates indicated, it was also brought in for similar type problems on 11/12/99 at 25775 miles and 1/24/00 at 28323 miles but was not repaired. The last time it was repaired on 2/9/00, the Jeep was at the dealership for three days and they said there was nothing wrong. However, after demanding that the rear end be checked, they found metal inside the rear differential pan and that the side berring race was damaged.
Rear differential assembly failed at 15883 miles and again at 62572 miles, consumer finds this failure of the bearings unusual, transfer case adapter seals were leaking, front pinion seal leaking. Abs light illuminated, dealer found abs sensor at right rear wheel failed, dealer replaced.

Brakes pulsate causing pulling and steering wheel vibration, replaced pads and rotors, replace all four rotors the second time, scraping noise from rear axle, bad end bearing and cracked skin in rear axle, replaced rear axle gear set.
The rear-end whines between 65-55 mph after letting off the gas pedal. I have had the rear bearings replaced, as well as 2 new rear-end assemblies put into the vehicle. The manufacturer has been notified.
No summary.
Idle goes up and down at stop. Idle goes up and Jeep will gain speed without foot on gas. Idle goes up and Jeep will gain speed in reverse. Idle "burps" at stop and Jeep jumps like it was hit from behind. Rear end whines while traveling and get louder till 75mph then mostly subsides. Transmission was replaced ( for no reason we could tell) to stop whine. Whine continues in the rear end. Dealer states "normal". Steering wheel shakes on extreme left or right turns forward or reverse until transmission was replaced. Dealer stated shaking was normal. Jeep has 2000 miles.
Hello NHTSA, I am writing to file a complaint about my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Immediately following the purchase (not lease) of my gc, my wife and I noticed a strong jolt in the rear end of the vehicle whenever we came to a stop. I brought our vehicle back to our dealership 2 times for inspection but each time my dealer, manhattan Jeep (a 5-star dealer in new york city) told us that "all of the new '99s do that" and that "all the ones with the v8 do that". That wasn't what I wanted to hear but I thought that it might go away after a few more miles. I now have over 7,000 miles on my vehicle and the problem is getting worse. I have written to customer relations at daimlerchrysler to report my problem. I do have a case number which they've assigned to me. I was told by customer relations that I should try another dealer. Since I was getting no satisfaction from customer relations, I called the sales department at difeo Chrysler in jersey city, new jersey and spoke to a sales representative. I posed as a potential buyer of a 2000 Grand Cherokee. I asked about the quality problems that the 1999 model had and I was told by the salesperson that all of the 1999s produced before September 1999 had a defective driveshaft and that they should be replaced. He assured me that the defects had been corrected for the 2000 model year. So now I have customer service denying the problem while the sales department was very well aware of the problem. I now scheduled a service appointment at bayside Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep in bayside, new york. The service department at bayside immediately knew what the problem was and I was told that I needed a new driveshaft #52099487ac. With such a large number of vechcles affected, shouldn't Jeep have notivied owners and not just dealers about the defect?.
Problems with failing axles and transmission. The consumer felt the manufacturer should fix the outstanding problems with axles and transmission and give a warranty for the power train. The vehicle experienced a noise while the vehicle was in motion. Also the window lift leaked, the rear absorbers, the rear passenger window leaked air, the seat belt mounting bolts, fire hazard on the manifold debris shield, brake pedal pulsated wildly(front rotors turned), the passenger window had stuck shut, the exterior mirror had broken off, and the transmission slammed into reverse. There was a buzz in the rear which had progressed to a howl. Refer to odi# 10029353.
