Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor Problems of Jeep Liberty

Yesterday my abs and esb lights came on. I did notice a bit of grinding type noise approximately twice in a full day of driving. Today, same thing, but lights went off a couple of times right after start up. My brakes and tires were replaced in late August. The repair shop said my brakes were in good order but the right rear wheel speed sensor is bad. If this doesn't correct issue, a wheel alignment and reset the steering angle is recommended. None of these issues would warrant the odd grinding noise when breaking and only occassionally does this happen and it did not occur when the technician drove it. This was all on city streets and driving straight in good weather. A quick google search indicates this is a problem with many owners of the 2006 Jeep Liberty. Many people have replaced the brakes, sensors, rotors and all things brakes but still experience the lights and the noise. Often, there is reference made to the clock spring. Since I saw so many complaints and my repairman was so vague that his recommendations would actually solve the issue, I felt it is worthy of investigating.

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Liberty. While stopped, the contact's vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle. The abs and traction warning indicators illuminated. The air bags in the driver and passenger side headrests deployed. The contact sustained injuries to the neck and nerve damage to the left side. The passenger seated in the front sustained neck injuries, which required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed a default in a wheel sensor that needed replacement. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with a brake sensor defect. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, but the issue could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.

At 44,143 in Dec 2009 I had 4 new tires and rear disc pads replaced. In July 2012, about mileage 54000, while driving in town, the left rear wheel speed sensor failed causing loss of abs, esp, and cruise control. I had dealer repair. At 67,642,in April 2016, I noticed the rear disc rotors were caked with a crusty rust and it appeared that the brake pads were worn out. . The rear brakes could not have been working. The dealer put on new rotors, calipers, pads, and flushed the system. The rusty rotors could not be turned to reuse, the calipers were both "stuck" and the brake fluid was "black". I also had the front rotors turned and new pads installed. The abs, esp, and cruise control still lights up on the dash for a minute then goes out by itself, leading me to totally distrust the system. I have never seen brake rotors so rusted in my 65 years.

2006 Jeep Liberty. Consumer writes in regards to suspension system failure. The consumer stated he granddaughter drove the vehicle to the store, however, when she returned, the vehicle wouldn't move. When she tried to backup, the right front suspension collapsed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The service writer stated the underside looked rusty. An inspection revealed, the right front control arm had collapsed. The brake line and wheel speed sensor were replaced. Also, the serpentine belt was cracked and had to be replaced.

While I was driving the abs bas esp stopped working and the lights came on. We were living in ft wayne indians at the time and without those features this Jeep is flat out dangerous. I had the wheel speed sensor replaced twice but that wasn't it. One dealer rebuilt all four of my brakes and purged the system. That didn't work. I paid four different dealerships over 3800$ plus rent fees. It still is t fixed.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4. The contact stated that vehicle would surge forward when shifting into any gear and the vehicle would also loose power abnormally. The egr (exhaust gas recirculation) valve melted, causing a burning smell to release into the vehicle. In addition, the gear shifter would shift out of park independently, causing the vehicle to roll away. The contact also stated that the rear passenger side door handle became defective, making it impossible to open the vehicle door from the interior of the vehicle and the abs, esp and traction control lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failures. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. . . . . Updated 06/18/12 the consumer also stated there was a problem with the control arm on the vehicle and because of the widespread problem a recall as issued. The consumer was then informed the recall was old, and her VIN was not included. The vehicle would loose power suddenly after driving forward, the windows would make a dragging noise, even though the dealer replace, the wheel speed sensor was replaced, the interior door handle on the passenger side was inoperative.
