The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from under the hood. The contact stopped the vehicle and upon opening the hood noticed flames. The fire department reported to the scene. The manufacturer informed the contact of the outstanding recalls which did not include the engine recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

When I was sold my 2003 Jeep Liberty without a working a/c, I was forced to use my windows as a means of ventilation and cooling these past almost four years. (the a/c is another story. ) my rear passenger window started to make gargling type noises as I rolled it down and up about two months ago. Then my front passenger window began to make a similar sound. However, when attempting to roll it back up 2 weeks ago it would not come all the way up. As I pressed on the window button for a few seconds this coil came up from inside the door and the window would not go up any farther. So, I had a mechanic friend open the door to check out the problem and he said the foam piece (regulator) was broken. Another friend and I researched the problem online and came across numerous unsatisfied customers who are dealing with the same issue! I got the number of a local dealership and the service person looked up my VIN to see if there are any recalls on my Liberty. To my dismay there are none. So, his guess to fix my problem would be $300 - 600. . . For one window!! there's no way I'm able to pay for even half of that outrageous cost! with one window out of commission, the rear passenger window is still gargling at me so I try not to use it. However, without a working a/c on these hot days it's such a disgrace to not be able to use my windows! plus, I drive a lot for work and transport people. . . Not good!!
today I came across this website. I'm not sure what this is going to do to help my situation (and others in the same leaking boat), but it was worth a shot. I'm tempted to go through the other websites to order the part myself and then fix it myself. Is this a wise decision, or should I wait to see what comes of this complaint? it's a shame that big corporations are allowed to do this to their trusting consumers. From all of us "little people", we appreciate any help we're able to get from this ridiculous situation.

Faulty evaporator valve - there was a recall for a different VIN group, but this exhibits the same fault.
The contact owns a 2002 Jeep Liberty. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact smelled a burning odor of coolant. The temperature gauge displayed a high temperature. The vehicle was driven onto the emergency lane and the vehicle was turned off. The contact allowed the vehicle to cool down for thirty minutes before restarting it. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the radiator, radiator fan, and cooling temperature sensor were replaced. The failure continued to occur after the vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was not repaired when the complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 195,000.
My 4 yr old son and I were driving down 199 at about 45 mph about 5:30 am July 13, 2009 when my 2004 Jeep Liberty just shut off, the engine and electric. I coasted over to the shoulder, I was unable to turn on my emergency lights, I was also unable to unlock the doors, so I reached over behind me and unlocked my sons door, and got out of the Jeep and went around to get my son out. I was a few feet behind my Jeep and I called my boyfriend to let him know we were stranded. While on the phone I noticed fire and sparks falling underneath the Jeep,I immediately called 911. While on the phone with the operator I heard a loud bang like a gunshot and looked and saw smoke and flames from under the hood, the 911 operator told me to run from the Jeep and get as far as I could, I looked back and the fire was huge . The firetruck and police came and put out the fire, everything from the front seat to the front bumper was melted. The whole inside was filled with soot and water, the windshield was broken. The fire marshal said not to even send it to a shop, it went straight to the junkyard. I have owned this car since brand new of may 2004, I bought it from haynes Jeep in richmond. The only thing that had ever been repaired was the starter, and the fire marshal inspected it and reassured me that the starter had nothing to do with the fire. After the fire I did look up recalls, there was one that caused under the hood fires, your campaign number for it is 04v337000, the engine and cooling July 2 , 2004. I submitted this recall to the fire marshal and he believes it is the reason for the fire, and it also says so in his report. I contacted Chrysler/Jeep and they refuse to do anything, they will not even come and look at the Jeep. They say my VIN doesn't fall into this recall category. My Jeep was made just before the recall. They denied my claim stating that my warranty was over, and the upkeep was my responsibility. I couldn't have prevented the fire in any way.
We are having problems with the cooling and engine. Jeep has a recall on this problem for 2004 3. 7v Jeep Liberty. Recall #04v337000 they are telling us that it doesn't not effect this Jeep, how could that be?.
Air conditioning compressor fails to engage. I had to replace the compressor once already in 2007, service tech said the spring in the compressor must have broke. Needed to replace the compressor. Now 2009, and again having the same problem, the a/c compressor will not engage. Going to have it repaired this week !.
The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. The contact noticed that the engine warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that due to an engine fire under the hood, the wiring harness needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that his VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 04v337000 (engine and engine cooling). The repair would cost approximately $1,800. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 55,000.
The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. While driving 5 mph in snowy conditions, the vehicle was supposed to be in 4 wheel drive and began to skid. The vehicle failed to shift into 4 wheel drive, although the indicator was illuminated, which meant it was activated. The contact also heard a clunking sound. She took the vehicle to a repair shop and was informed that the link in the driveshaft failed, which caused the failure. The manufacturer informed her to send a receipt for the repair and they would consider reimbursement. The current mileage was 42,156 and failure mileage was approximately 42,150. Updated 3/5/09 * cn the water pump was replaced updated 03/13/09.
I own a 2002 Jeep Liberty and within the last year I have replaced the serpentine belt, spark plugs, temp, brakes, rotors, all fluids have been change yearly, thecoils to spark plugs, etc. Alot of things have gone wrong. It has about 82,000 miles. It's overheating, shaking, my engine is burning all the coolant and oil as soon as it hits the engine I can hear it boiling under the hood now and it's not safe to drive anymore. I've had it towed to see what's going on,but I was told that my engine is shot and he has no explanation to why except that its burning all the fluids put in it everything else looks fine and is new thanks to me because I've been trying to figure out what is wrong with it and really to find out there is nothing I could do about it. So I called your Jeep dealerships and they say its not common for that to happen so is this a safety issue or is this engine defective? please help me I've done everything I could do.
The contact owns a 2002 Jeep Liberty. The contact's vehicle was repaired in 2007 according to NHTSA campaign id number 06v288000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). One year later, while attempting to make left turns, he heard a loud popping noise coming from the rear driver's side tire. He has not had the vehicle inspected to determine the cause of the failure. The upper part of the radiator also produced a hairline crack, causing radiator fluid to leak from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who found the source of the leak at the radiator tube. The failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 81,000. Updated 10/14/08. The lower ball joint failed. Updated 10/15/08.

2002 Jeep Liberty, with 40,000 miles, a/c compressor is out and apparently not covered under warranty. This is a premature breakdown of this item. We are being told the repairs would exceed $800. 00, which in itself is excessive.
Lower all joint recall in Jan. 04. Sept 04 I have it in the shop again for ball joint problem. Also had the a/c tensioner fixed twice. This is an 02 Jeep Liberty sport.
