Jeep Patriot owners have reported 5 problems related to engine failure (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle loses power unpredictably while in motion. Occurs in various scenarios, including during a complete stop, accelerating, decelerating, and cruising (occurs at all speeds 0-75 mph). Vehicle maintains electrical power but loses thrust, power steering, and brake pressure. Car needs to be turned off, and on occasion the engine will not turn over when attempting to re-start. Will have to wait several minutes. Occurs mostly after the vehicle has been driving for at least a short distance, then turned off for 5-10 minutes minimum. When vehicle restarts, the operator is at risk for failure. Jeep dealership has replaced the trottle body and issue persisted. Returned to Jeep, they replicated the engine failure but cannot identify an issue.

After refueling my car, the engine will stutter or stall at the first stop or at leaving the gas station if the vehicle is going less than 40 miles per hours. This has occurred on more than 10 occasions, with the last one beginning at the stoplight before turning on to the freeway. This is a very stressful situation as it could easily cause a crash due to the engine failing unexpectedly.

In August 2016 driving along and the car stalled and teh engine light and electrical light and my 4 wheel drive light came on. The four wheel drive stayed on as well and teh car sputtered then stopped. Would not go . Had it towed to a mechanic and he said the electronic body throttle needed replaced. Ridiculous,I contacted the dealership but didnt hear back so I had it fixed and replaced. Monday decemeber 12th while driving home from work at 45 miles an hour my Jeep stalled and then completely died on teh road. I managed to get it off the road at a coast. Had it towed again and the mechanic said I need a new engine. This is what happened the mechanic said "due to abrasive debris in the balance shaft bearings, these engines may have a loss of engine oil pressure, possibly resulting in an engine stall or engine failure," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "if the engine stalls while driving, it may increase the risk of a crash. " the same as teh recall,I called the dealership and they said my warranty expired and my Jeep was not on teh recall. Just because it wasnt on teh list does not mean there could not be the same problem. My Jeep did teh same thing twice while driving, stalled and then died.

2015 Jeep Patriot high altitude; complete power loss while driving @ 45 mph. Vehicle shut down and lost all power while in motion. While driving straight down a local road, my vehicle shut off & lost all power. The radio went off, my dashboard warning lights illuminated, all gauges went down as if the vehicle was in park & not in use. This vehicle is a danger on the roads. Dealership has said vehicle, but will not reveal if vehicle is infact defective. I purchased this vehicle in June 2015, brand new. This vehicle has been to the dealership for repair nearly 10 seperate times. This vehicle is unsafe & shut off on me while moving. There are many reports of " engine failure " for the 2015 Jeep Patriot. My vehicle is one of many that is unsafe, and shut off while in motion. Extremely dangerous. Fca llc, should have all 2015 Patriot Jeeps recalled. They are building dangerous & potentially life threatening vehicles. Fca must be held accountable for a recall. Dealership has possession of my vehicle & it will not be driven by myself until they can duplicate the engine failure.

I was driving home from work at approximately 55 mph while passing a tractor trailer up a moderate incline when the engine of my 2012 Jeep Patriot latitude failed. Upon passing the tractor trailer, all of the indicators on the dashboard began to light up - then the indicators, as well as my headlights, completely died. When the lights went out, the engine failed, and my car began to slow to a complete stop on a busy highway. I was barely able to get into a small space on the shoulder of the highway before a tractor trailer very nearly took my life. At first, I thought it was the car battery. I purchased this vehicle 13 days ago, so perhaps the battery had gotten weak on the dealer lot in the winter months. And, after my car was jumped, it began to work. However, the car could only be started once, and the engine will no longer turn over. It has been towed to a local dealership. I drive extensively for a living, and I am afraid that I will die in a car accident in this Jeep Patriot because the car failed completely at highway speeds. I have researched this and have found that it is a problem with 2011-2012 Jeep Patriots. Please enforce a recall!.
