Everytime wife fills the fuel tank, the engine shuts off. 80% of the time it happens in the intersection leaving the fuel station. She has almost been in numerous accidents because of this problem. She looses power steering as the pump is no longer running because the engine has shut down. Jeep dealer says this is a common safety problem, and that the fuel tank is the culprit. The overflow valve on the fuel tank is faulty. There are numerous complaints with other owners with the same safety issue. This need to be a recall before someone gets killed.

My wife was traveling over thanksgiving on her way home on the interstate 70 mph and the Jeep just shuts off, lots of traffic loses all power, so she pulled over and called me, I had her to turn the switch to the off position and back to run a couple of time and it started, she drove the rest of the way home approx. 100 miles with the engine light on.

The engine shut off twice without warning while we were on the freeway. The second time the engine stalled was 4 days after we picked the car up from hunter Jeep service dept, who told us the issue was repaired and everything was fine now.
Engine stalled at 45 miles/hour at three different occasions over a 3 day time frame. After approximately 5 minute the engine could be started up again. The dealership replaced a crankshaft sensor as a supposed fix. After driving the vehicle for 15 to 20 miles the engine would shut down again without warning. This time the engine started and stalled 6 consecutive times over a distance of less then one mile. The car was towed to the dealership. The problems described occurred while driving on state road and north medina line road, west of akron, ohio. The condition described is dangerous as the loss of engine operation renders car handling (stearing and braking) very difficult. Engine stall at the third time stated above happened at a sharp right curve with on-comming trafic. A collission was narrowly avoided.

The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer for diagnostic testing. The failure mileage was 126,000. Ap.
Engine stalls shortly after refueling. Vehicle shuts off when it comes to a stop within minutes of refueling.
Gas pump shuts off when filling up, it started last month on & off. Last 3 days have not been able to put more than 1 gallon regardless of gas pump or gas station. Checked internet and many are reporting the same problem and have been told the gas tank has to be replaced at owners expense. I had similar problems with 2005 Chrysler 300, it started the same way where I could not put gas, then it started to shutoff while driving or right after filling up, a couple times I almost got into an accident when turning at intersection and engine shutoff after leaving the gas station. The dealer replaced the gas tank for free as similar issues were reported for 2006 chryler 300s,but not 2005 model. 2) also, often after filling up, the engine light will go on usually within hours of filling up while driving and stays on. Sometimes it does not go off for days even when driving on expressway for an hr. The engine light when it goes off may stay off for 2-3 weeks. I check the gas cap and it is on tight. Previously my mechanic said the engine light was due to a code 420? pointing to the catalytic converter. I am not convinced is the catalytic converter because when the light goes off, it stays off for weeks, and I do allot of driving. On streets and expressway for 30 miles or more daily. I am taking car to dealer for check up next week.
My car has stalled completely over a dozen times while driving or even just from being parked and trying to move forward or backward. The first time I took it to the dealer was after I was driving on the freeway and the car completely shut off. I turned on my emergency lights and moved to the left shoulder. Thankfully other vehicles realized something was wrong and let me move out of the way. I could've hurt some one else or myself. I was parked for 5 minutes when I tried to start it again but the car was hesitant. I tried again and was able to get out of the freeway safely and it shut off again a few miles from there. I then had it towed to the dealer. They stated that there were no error codes and that the car was okay. Now again on oct 8th 2015 it did it again will driving on a city street. After letting it sit I was able to get home and after 20 minutes I drove it to the dealer and it stalled again down the street from the dealer. I had to get it towed in case there were error codes on the software. They've had my car for 4 days and they have already called that there are no error codes. They have had technicians try to duplicate the problem both times but no luck. I refuse to drive the car. I will not put my life or any one else in danger.
Vehicle started shaking violently, after evaluations and inspections by certified mechanics, I'm told I need a new transmission. I just bought the car 2 years ago, used from a reputable dealer as is, with clean history. Had them check everything over one final time before purchase. Now I'm reading that many other Jeep Patriot owners have had the same problems. I highly suggest a recall for the 2008 Jeep Patriot. It has a cvt transmission, which is a dangerous transmission because if it overheats the vehicle shuts down. My husband was driving it on the highway and the vehicle shit down on the highway, luckily neither he not any other motorist was hurt. In 2014 Jeep changed from the cvt transmission entirely, suggesting their awareness of the issue with this type of transmission. We don't want anyone else to go through what we've been through, get hurt or even worse. I do hope you would take this complaint seriously and launch a full investigation into Chrysler.
Was driving out of a parking lot Sunday afternoon. Car was running with no problems and suddenly engine completely shut off without warning. Electronics were still running. Tried to turn engine back on, engine attempted to crank but did not successfully turn on. Tried twice with no success. Waited 10 minutes and it turned on with no problem. Drove down a little further and it stalled again, with electronics still on. Managed to turn engine back on right away, but I was too worried to drive it. Towed it back home. Code p0335 was indicated when scanned. Researched online and discovered engines of 2011 Jeep Patriot tend to stall without warning.

I have a 2011 Jeep Patriot 4x4 with the 2. 4 liter and for the last month my wife and I are having trouble with the engine just shutting off and not wanting to start. Only had 2 times when the engine would just shut off while stopped(thank god)and have has numerous times when the engine just will not start. . Sometimes you have to mess with the gear shift but most times you have to turn the key really hard to start or just keep trying until it descides to start. My main concern is that it will just shut off while running down the interstate. I called chrystler and they said they had no recalls and I ask them to make not of my problem and they said they would. . The gentleman said they were no recalls for my Jeep.
Traveling at 65 mph on state highway in wyoming about an hour out of casper when the engine shut down and would not restart. Temperature was in the 80s and sky was partly overcast. There was no cell phone coverage, but a highway patrol officer stopped and assisted. After about an hour the engine did restart and we were able to travel on without further incident. This is the second time in a month that the engine has shut down without any ascertainable reason. This time the traffic was light and we were able to coast off the traveled portion of the highway. The first time was on interstate 25 in utah, the traffic was very heavy and we were lucky that there was not an accident. The prior time the car would not restart until the next day and was towed.
Engine shuts off while driving and will not restart. Electrical seems to keep working and engine will turn over but not restart. Let the vehicle sit for a couple hours and it may restart. Happened 3 times and each time had the Jeep towed to dealer and dealer could not find any problem. On the 3rd breakdown the dealer installed these new parts module fuel pump, module fuel pump level unit, level uni-auxiliary unit, tube-fuel transfer, fuel module seal. I have drove the Jeep a couple thousand mile since the repair. Its hard to tell if its actually repaired because the Jeep would run over a thousand miles between failures.
I-15 outside st. George, utah. Outside temp 110. 4:30 p. M. Driving since 11 a. M. Driven 275 miles on a full tank of mid grade gas with over 1/4 tank left. Engine shut down and would not restart. Tried again several times over the next two hours. Engine would crank but not fire. Towed into stephen wade Jeep dealership and left overnight. Vehicle started the next morning. Repair shop could find no problem. Have driven 600 more miles since then with no problem. There was no crash because we were fortunate to get off the road without incident although traffic was very heavy.
I purchased my 2011 Jeep Patriot in March 2011 and one day it suddenly stalled while traveling 50-55 mph on the interstate. The car had been traveling on the road for only 5 minutes prior to the incident, with no stops or problems. I was meeting my husband for lunch and the car just stalled and I pulled over on the side. I was in shock because the were cars behind me and I immediately put my emergency lights on. I called my husband and told him what happened and he asked me did I hit a bump wrong that may have caused this issue and I said no. I immediately called my dealer and left a message. The service center called back and I gave them details. They told me to bring the car for a few days and allow them to drive it, but I wouldn't have a replacement vehicle. So they told me that if it gave me any other issues to give them a call. A few months later it did the same thing, again when I first took off leaving my home. At this point I was assuming it was something I was doing or hitting a bump wrong. So I called them and gave another notice to the dealer. Same day the windows started to go down by themselves. Again, I thought I touched the switch wrong and cause the window to roll all the way down but it not only did it to my window the passenger window did the same. So during the first oil change at the dealership, I told them to check everything out because the vehicle was doing weird stuff. Never saw any warning lights on the dashboard. No putting occurred when the car shut down. It's been over a year now and we have only dealt with the windows going down by themselves, but the car isn't turning off. . Thank god! my father in law brought the recall issue to our attention and wanted us to contact the dealer because we have two young kids. We travel alot and would like this matter taken care of before we decide to travel for the holidays.
Since the first year that I bought this vehicle, the engine has stalled intermittently while driving! this happens without notice, no lights go on, not during bad weather, etc. This has happened 10-12 times over the past 4. 5 years; sometimes at slow speeds but a few times on the freeways! each time I contact Chrysler or my Jeep dealership and have had it in the shop 6-7 times for weeks on end and each time they "cannot duplicate the problem" and send it back home with me with no results. The Chrysler customer service department simply tells me to work with my dealership and the dealership keeps my car for a week and the same things happens weeks or months later. This is a huge safety hazard which could easily result in an accident with injuries or fatalities and Jeep doesn't seem to care or know how to fix their own faulty vehicle. If I wasn't still paying for this car I would never set foot in it again but thus far, I am stuck in a death trap of a vehicle not knowing when the next time will be that I am driving and my car shuts down. The last incident was yesterday 01/17/2012 at aprox. 30 mph. I am so frustrated with this car and its manufacturers and thier lack of accountability. From reading this site and other Jeep forums, this is not an isolated problem. Many other Patriot owners have experienced the same problems and Jeep has not helped any of us. I have kept all incidents well documented in the unfortunate case of an accident so that I have a chance to persue legal options and finally hold Chrysler accountable.
