Vehicle has developed a rattle in the clutch/transmission assembly. Searches for other people affected by this yield numerous reports of clutch throw out bearing failures. It affects shifting and clutch engagement negatively. Makes it hard to positively engage shifts at speed. Mine has not yet failed but the dealership and Jeep have both been very resistant to acknowledge a safety issue that clearly affects numerous manual transmission Wranglers dating back to ~2008. A personal acquaintance also had a clutch throw out bearing fail on the highway (same make model and year vehicle). He is currently pursuing replacement of vehicle after massive damage done from throw out bearing failure. Please be aware that my vehicle had already had the shifter replaced (recall failure). This issue is separate from the shifter linkage recall. I've attached some documentation below (a small sampling of the users who are experiencing this issue for years).

I am having trouble with my throw out bearing preload on my Jeep. I have noticed there is a TSB 06-002-07 for the tj and jk Wranglers year 2007 and before. I have called Jeep and they have no record on the throw out bearing for my year Jeep. As soon as I go to google there's 100s of pages about preload problems on the throw out bearing. They have also recommended a bearing threw national bearing and seals but I haven't tried that yet. I had it replaced in November 2016 and also had problems with carmax saying it was my driving and also I had to go back and forth multiple times because of there faulty work. It started to act up again load squeal when the clutch pedal is depressed and the noise goes away when pressed (at a stop in nuetral) also loud when driving when clutch is released same noice. I'm not sure who else to talk to about this issue because Jeep was not so helpful. Thank you.

This vehicle was classified as having excellent off-road capabilities. After it's first excursion off-road, the clutch throwout bearing was found to be rattling and had come apart. A full clutch replacement was completed with all new components by a licensed and certified mechanic with excellent outcome. 1 month after the clutch replacement the clutch pedal suddenly went to the floor and would not release the clutch. Replacement of the clutch slave, master and hydraulic line as well as a full hydraulic fluid flush yielded no success even with pressure and vacuum applications to bleed the system. This failure of plastic parts designed for off-road applications is a major safety issue. This system is fed by the brake fluid reservoir and could compromise the braking system if it fails. Numerous TSB's and a possible recall were noted but the dealer notified me that the VIN was not covered under the recall even though it was within the scope of the recall covered years, make and model. Will have Jeep finish the repair at no cost since it seems to be a flawed design.
2009 Jeep Wrangler x 2 door manual transmission transmission first gear pops out of gear during acceleration. Shift to first, let off of clutch with or without throttle applied and the transmission will kick out of first gear, leaving the vehicle and occupants in neutral in an intersection, or on train tracks from a stop, forcing quick clutch pedal application and shifting into first again, with the problem most often recurring. This happens every time the vehicle is driven. This does not happen in 3rd of 5th gear. Dealer did a diagnosis paid for by owner, and determined it was the 1/2 gear and synchro gears. Chrysler has a technical service bulletin that I was ineligible. Vehicle had 20k miles when purchased, 25000 when diagnosed, now at 46,000 miles, with an even more often occurrence.

My 2012 Wrangler sport (6sp) has a faulty transmission. It makes a horrible rattle at high rpms in 3rd and 4th gear, the gears whine and 1st is really hard to engage when the vehicle is slowly rolling. Sometimes I have to double clutch it just to get 1st gear to work when rolling. Reverse grinds. The gear shifter shakes excessively when vehicle is in 4th and 5th gear. Shifting from 1st to 2nd is notchy as is 5th to 6th and when putting it into reverse. The clutch often has a crunchy feel when I press the pedal to the floor.

Vehicle was driven to work, approx. 15 miles, and parked. When attempting to start the vehicle to go to lunch, the clutch pedal snapped and dangled. The clutch hydraulic unit actuating rod had snapped in two. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealer for repairs. The replacement part have to be ordered and the vehicle will not be repaired until next week. I have requested the dealer to keep the old part for me. If this had occurred while driving in the morning or lunch time traffic I have no doubt it would have caused a serious accident.

The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The contact was driving approximately 15 mph approaching a stop sign when the clutch engaged, the vehicle shifted into neutral gear violently without warning. The failure occurred sporadically after the contact engage the accelerator pedal from a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on two occasions for the identical failure. The technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired when the complaint was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.

After approximately 500 miles the vehicle began to exhibit difficulty in shifting from first to second gear. Problem is very apparent when the vehicle is cold, but still noticeable after the vehicle warms up. When shifting from first to second, it feels as if second gear is not fully synchronized. If it is done at a normal shift rate it actually clips second gear (and makes an associated clipping/grinding noise). Pausing in neutral and resting the shifter against second, you can actually feel two or three gear teeth go by before it will drop into gear. To get it to shift smoothly without clipping gear teeth requires a long enough delay in neutral that following traffic almost rear ends the vehicle. The driver is essentially faced with the decision of damaging the transmission or risking getting rear ended. Double clutching the vehicle helps, but obviously should not be required for a fully synchronized transmission. Took the vehicle into the dealer at 1164 miles and 1306 miles, but the service technicians claim they cannot reproduce the problem, but they adjusted and lubricated the linkage as a preventive measure. However, the service manager and another dealer employee who drove the vehicle have noticed that second gear doesn't feel the same as other Wranglers with manual transmissions. I have also had several other people drive the vehicle and they agree that the transmission isn't shifting correctly. I am scheduled to take the vehicle in again for this problem, but via phone the dealer doesn't appear to have an identified cause or fix. Vehicle is now at approximately 1600 miles and problem is still very apparent, if not worse. This issue appears to be related to odi id number : 10156374 & 10160948.
Model: 2006 Jeep Wrangler rubicon with 6 speed transmission. After backing out of a parking stall and during the transition from reverse to 1st gear the clutch pedal lost its connection to the clutch mechanism. The pedal was free to swing with no resistance at all. There was a loud "pop" from under the dash. I was able to drive the vehicle to the dealership by by-passing the clutch interlock switch and starting the vehicle in gear. The vehicle had exactly 74 miles on the odometer. The dealership repaired the vehicle under warranty.
Service engine light. Leak in fuel system.

Clutch pedal fell off while driving 55 mph. Clutch pedal attachment to clutch cylinder has a plastic grommet which broke and caused clutch pedal to fall off. Neither dealer nor Jeep customer service would assist in procurring replacement grommet, consumer was told that the old style has a pin connection instead of plastic.
Exhaust manifold cracked 6/21/01, local Jeep dealer had no recall, not under warranty. I was in the process of finding a better aftermarket replacement manifold when on 7/19/01,while stopped w/ engine running, the plastic hydraulic line for the clutch melted from the excessive heat, and caught on fire.
The throw-out bearing clips broke, which caused the clutch disc and pressure plate to be damaged, hense I had to have all replaced. When I called Jeep to try to get them to cover this part which I thought would be under my bumper to bumper warrenty, they told me it was a "wearible item". So I told them it was not a wearible item, and they said anything to do with the clutch is a wearible item, and this sequence of actions had lead me to you.

Grinding / rattling noise coming from transmission area when clutch pedal not depressed and stops when depressed. Problem also worsens as vehicle warms up. This has occured and persisted since vehicle was first purchased. Took vehicle to dealer and was told that there was no problem. Transmission also becomes progressively harder to shift after vehicle is driven for a short time.
Transmission makes a noise, sounds like the clutch-release bearing (throw-out bearing) as the sound goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed. In addition there is a vibration noise when shifting through the gears. Dealer states this is normal for the Jeep manual transmission??.
Transmission rattles if in neutral, with clutch pedal not depressed. When in first gear, will often pop out of geat with a loud sound. Difficult to change gears from 5 to 4 after driving for more then 30 min in 5th gear. Please note that I'm in ontario, canada, postal code k1n 9m5, so state and zip infor in the form are not correct.
