Kia Motor RIO owners have reported 22 problems related to front air bag sensor control (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor RIO based on all problems reported for the RIO.
Air bag sensor came on and off for a while after warranty on the bag had just expired. I was told by the dealer who sold it to me new that I had to replace the entire bag, which I did. Then after replacing, they said the light was still on and had to replace some kind of pin. But they swore the bag really had to be replaced. Did I pay $800 for a bad pin. . . . Maybe. Or, is there a pattern of airbags going out for no reason? the bag was not deployed in my presence, but after that being the fourth "bad part" go out on this car, I feel I should report it. Before I got the new bag, the light would go on and off when I turned sharp corners. Car was at about 80,000 miles when the light came on. It took me about six months after the light came on before I could afford to replace. . . . The car has had numerous faulty parts.

Air bag sensor light randomly comes on and off while driving and first staring up. No accidents to cause this. Car has just over 65k. After seeing many complaints online about this same issue of the sensors randomly coming on after 60k miles or so, seems this issue needs to be addressed. Doesn't seem right that this is a common issue when a car has low mileage. Codes provided were front driver and passanger side impact sensors. Again, no crash or accidents. Car is gently driven.

The passenger air bag sensor went out at 170000 miles and they replaced it free. Now the same sensor went out at 70000 miles and the car is out of warranty and they won't replace it for free. The same sensor shouldn't go out twice in 10 years. There is a problem with the sensors. None of the air bags work if one sensor if broken. The repairs would be about $2000 and we don't feel we should have to pay if kia has a safety issue.

I was involved in a front to rear car accident. My kia did not have enough time to brake when the vehicle in front of me (a Honda) stopped suddenly. During the incident my kia hit the Honda's rear twice (two impact moments) - after the first impact in a moment of panic I hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and hit the Honda once more. The airbags did not go off (my safety concern/complaint). I was glad the air bags did not go off because the gases they release affect my asthma. However, if there was a passenger with me they may have been injured on the dashboard and I also could have been injured by the steering wheel since the air bags did not go off. The entire front of my kia was ruined: the hood was crumpled, the front bumper came off. The head lights were smashed, and the front sides of the body were cracked out of place. There was a crack in the box attached to the steering wheel as if it was going to open to release the air bags but nothing happened. I am not sure how much stronger the impact needed to be in order to trigger the sensor for the airbags - the impact was pretty intense. I do have images of the impact to my vehicle if it will be helpful to understand why the airbags did not release.

The 'airbag' dash light illuminates and the dealership has determined the cause of the failure is the sensor assembly located in the front passenger's seat cushion. This problem was addressed by a 'voluntary safety recall campaign' conducted by kia affecting "2006-2008 my Rio occupant classification system mat" but according to the local dealership my kia Rio manufactured in April 2007 was not included in this recall even though the problem/diagnosis/fix is identical.

We purchased the above car in may 2014 from a Toyota dealer in vancouver wa. After awhile, I as passenger got to looking at an off sign which was on all the time. Looked further to see the words passenger air bag off. Which I assume means in an accident I would not have protection. After 4 trips to hannah kia in our area, they handed me a kia technical service bulleting dated Feb. 2008 instructing dealers to train the passenger in how to sit on the seat in order to activate the sensor. Which leads me to believe they have known all along a problem exists. I weigh 154# but my weight does not activate the sensor. Using a small 12"x12" pillow I can get it to work sometimes. . This is unacceptble. I would like to know if your receive and act on this. I am going to contact my congressional representative also.
Kia sent me a recall notice for the passenger seat sensor to the srs air bag system. I brought the car to the dealer, and they performed the recall work, but the "air bag" lamp continued to illuminate. On further inspection they told me the air bag module was defective and estimated replacement at $800 with labor. The module was not covered by the recall, nor by the extended bumper to bumper warranty I purchased from the dealer at the time the car was purchased. This is a critical safety component and numerous other complaints have been filed with NHTSA. A recall should be issued and affected vehicles should be repaired at no cost to owners.
My vehicle's air bag sensor has been on and the kia manufacturer claims it not to be a recall since my warranty has expired this past November 2012. Now my car temperature gauge goes from cold -0- to half on the gauge. It starts to shake and shuts down in the middle of me driving. Almost caused me to have 2 accidents. I had ti taken to take it to get a diagnostic test and this was in part of a recall that the manufacturer claims is not their problem.
The contact owns a 2011 kia Rio. The contact stated that the air bag warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the passenger seat air bag sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 32,000.

Passenger airbag sensor in 2008 kia Rio lx does not work properly, because the light saying "passenger airbag off" is on even when adult passenger is in front passenger seat. This happens about 1 in 3 times the vehicle is entered, and shifting around with vehicle running does not trip the sensor to activate the airbag. Dealer was notified and replaced the seat bottom/sensors but the problem still persists. This is a safety concern because if an accident happens and the sensor is not working properly, the passenger could be seriously injured or killed. I think this may need to be a recall or design change for kia since the replaced sensor was not a fix to the problem.

Letter from senator on behalf of his constituents, concerning problems experienced with the air bag sensor in their 2006 kio Rio vehicle. When the consumers wife sat in the front passenger seat, the passenger airbag sensor light stayed on, which indicated that the front passenger seat airbag was not activated. The consumer stated there was an airbag sensor on the passenger side that was supposed to keep the passenger airbag disabled when only the driver was in the front seat. There was a dashboard light connected to the sensor that illuminated when the airbag was deactivated.
Air bag sensor in front passenger seat. This has failed-three times since bought new in Dec. 2005.
There is an airbag sensor on the right front passenger side of my 2006 kia Rio that is supposed to keep the person on the passenger side safe but airbags in a disabled status when only the driver is in the front seat of the car. However, very often, when my wife (who weighs 220 lbs) is seated in the right front passenger side, this airbag sensor still indicates that the passenger side airbags are disabled. The last time this occurred, a diagnosis check stated that a 'small occupant' was in the seat. My wife was in the passenger seat when this last test was done this is a safety issue which hinders me from comfortably driving this vehicle, and it seldom gets driven. The dealer and kia have made many unsuccessful attempts to resolve this. They have been refusing to refund my money back to me.
My car had a recall because of stalling issues before also again when I had this problem the fuel injector was unplugged now it stalls all the time engine check light comes on had a airflow sensor light changed and it is still stalling even more check engine light comes on but goes off before I can get it checked and so I am getting nowhere and I am scared too death off having a accident because of this issue I think this is a real safety issue it is a 2001 kia Rio can you help me I have contacted kia already.

2006 kia Rio with a faulty airbag system. Consumer states that the airbag light does not turn off when his wife sits in the front passenger seat. The consumer stated there was an airbag sensor on the passenger side that was supposed to keep the passenger airbag disabled when only the driver was in the front seat. There was a dashboard light connected to the sensor that illuminated when the airbag was deactivated.
The contact owns a 2006 kia Rio. The air bag warning light remained illuminated whenever a passenger was seated in the front seat. The dealer replaced the air bag sensor; however, the failure continued. The dealer re-inspected the vehicle, but was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer advised him to turn the vehicle off and restart it or have the passenger sit in the rear. The contact was dissatisfied with the remedy. The failure mileage was 1,000 and current mileage was 14,000. Updated 01/11/08. Updated.
Bought car in 01-06 started to get an air bag light on driver side in 05-06. First time was due to malfunction seat belt pretensioner ordered. Went back 06-21 replaced with seat belt retractor. Second time on 07-18 airbag light remained on was told due to seat covers. Airbag was reset, was told no seat covers. Hi-desert kia sells seat covers for 2006 Rio. Third time 07-06 was told airbag system connection was knocked loose due to items under passenger seat, do not put items under seats. Air bag system was reset. Fourth time 08-06 was told air bag control unit needs replacement. Waiting for part to arrive 09-06.
Air bag light comes on and will stay on for a long period of time and go off. Dealer made the repairs and it is still defective.
While driving air bag warning lightappeared on the dashboard intermittently.
Air bag warining light came on and would not go off. Vehicle was taken to deaership, where the air bag module was taken out. Dealership did not receive part(s) to correct problem until 9/22/00, which caused owner to drive around for 3 weeks without an air bag. This was an unsafe condition. The new one failed after 3 days in car. But further tests said sensor was okay.
Air bag warning would come on sporadically. Owner then took vehicle to dealership. Dealership replaced a sensor. Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision in which neither dual air bag deployed. Police that came on site stated stated that air bags should have deployed due to location and extent of damage. Please describe details.
