Air Bag Problems of Kia Motor RIO - part 1

The airbag warning light illuminated on the dashboard and has stayed on permanently. This indicates a malfunction in the supplemental restraint system (srs). Because the warning light is active, there is a severe safety risk that the airbags may not deploy correctly or at all in the event of a crash, putting the driver and passengers at risk of serious injury. My car is a 2018 kia Rio that has a clean history and has never been in an accident. Recently my airbag light came on and I had a diagnostic run that showed a b1448 code indicating an OCS mat defect in the passenger seat. The 2015-2018 kia sedona models also had the same problem and were issued safety recalls. Due to this previous history I believe there could be a safety recall needed for the kia Rio models as well.

Took my car in as the airbag light on the dashboard kept turning on and off— with or without a passenger in the seat. The dealership ran a diagnostic inspection and turns out that the passenger side OCS mat and ecu are faulty and need to be replaced (dtc codes b176700 and b17672f). I have not been in a crash and there are no obvious signs of damage to the seat that might have caused this. There’s no active recall for this but it does seem that one other person has reported issues with the passenger airbag system and I know other kia models have had recalls in the past. The car had about 90,000 miles on it when this issue started and it’s up to date on all maintenance but I was quoted over $3000 to fix this which is essentially the value of my car now, totaling the vehicle even though it has no other issues. This is a major safety issue, when you buy a car you expect that the airbags and corresponding electrical equipment last you for the life of the car or until there is an accident.

The airbag warning light and the abs warning light turned on simultaneously while driving. This is a severe safety hazard as both critical, life-saving safety features are currently compromised. I have already contacted kia customer care regarding this issue, but I am filing this official complaint with the NHTSA to ensure a proper safety investigation is documented for this vehicle.

The contact owns a 2007 kia Rio. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was determined the OCS seat sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but confirmed that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 12v244000 (air bags) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 260,000.

The first problem part is the airbag. The clockspring was fixed twice under warranty. Then the dealership said they wont keep doing it and blamed me wrongly. I had a private mechanic repair the same part twice due to the code it was giving but it turns out thats not what's wrong with it. The entire airbag and electrical components are bad, that is why the two repairs the dealership as well as the private mechanic made did not work. We also have some engine problems they wont continue to fix because my warranty is now surpassed. The car burns through 20 quarts of oil in between changes, it has no leaks. It has so much carbon buildup. They replaced a gasket and thats another part that has continually needed replaced but they did not fix the issue that has caused it to go bad. When the small mechanics hear about the issue they are confused because the type of motor I have was recalled in other cars for the same issues. My car just recently surpassed the warranty, I should not be having to still fight the dealership to have a car in working condition for the same problems they kept putting bandaid on during warranty repairs.

I was sitting behind a s. U. V . When it started to move I doubt if we were going 5 miles I slightly moved my steering wheel not even a half a turn to move straight behind the s. U. V. My car shot to the right jumped a curb, hit a pole, thru two trees down a hill and into a fence. When it was all said and done my car wouldn't stop, my airbag never deployed and my car was totaled. I kept asking if there was a way this car could be examined. The insurance company took the car. I had started having problems prior to this incident that started around the end of may. But before that the car ran pretty good and only had 52,000 miles. 1st it wouldn't start after driving it for a while. You would have to wait a few minutes and it would restart. So my husband took it to our mechanic. He couldn't find anything wrong and it even passed inspection. About a week and a half later I am driving and the car just stopped while I am driving no power. I finally get it to start again. Get it to a safer place and called aaa towing. They towed it to kia. They replaced some type of sensor I believe it was a crank. It ran smooth but it still didn't feel right. It had a hard time pulling hills and the acceleration wasn't right. It kept losing acceleration like it was going to stop on me again then it would seem to kick back in. I had planned that weekend to take it up to pep boys for diagnostics and take it back to kia to see what was wrong with it. But I had the incident that Friday . I uploaded a police report. And I do have repair ,inspection & and tow bill if needed.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the air bag sensor on the driver’s side needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted but a diagnostic test was not preformed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2010 kia Rio. The contact stated that while the son was driving approximately 55 mph the vehicle crashed head on into a guard rail. During the crash the frontend of the vehicle was severely damaged but no airbags were deployed. No injuries were reported but the contact was concern that the air bags did not deploy to provide protection to the driver and front seat passenger. A police report was taken at the scene. The vehicle was destroyed and towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the incident. The failure mileage was 140,000.

Right now, the interior lights do not work. I have already replaced the windshield wiper system because they stopped working. I just found out through searching for new insurance that there are 7 recalls on my vehicle (this would explain the "brakes sounds" and "no light in the interior". I have had no confirmation that these repairs have been conducted: 1. Fuel system, gasoline (recall: 3/31/2021) 24gi 20v648000 2. Service brakes, hydraulic part #072-9831 (recall: 09/23/2020) 3. Electrical system (recall: 08/22/2017) 4. Equipment: 49 cfr, part 567) (recall: 05/31/2017) 5. Equipment: "tire section and rims" (fmvss) #110 (recall: 03/02/2017) 6. Equipment: fmvss #110 (recall: 03/02/2017) 7. Engine and engine cooling "engine may seize" (recall: 03/02/17).

The air bag light has come on and as I understand I am no longer protected in case of an accident. I do not find a recall but there should be as I am seeing many complaints for the same issue.

Rear ended a car at 60 mph on black ice and the air bags did not deploy.

Victim was hit head on by a truck. Victim was going 10-15mph truck faster. Victim was t-boned on the driver side at the front tire. The entire front fender and frame were damaged. Victim sub-stained a bad shoulder injury and ptsd. Air bags did not deploy.

The air bags malfunction they didn’t go off and seatbelt didn’t lock on impact. Yes my safety was at risk. I keep calling them and they not do pick up the phone I get transferred back to the receptionist. The insurance company is doing their inspection the police as well. No warnings.

I received a letter from kia corporation that they would voluntarily replace a part (the clockspring assembly) in the steering wheel shaft as the malfunction would impair the proper functioning of the air bags, in the letter they stated specifically that this would not cost me any money out pocket including the diagnostic, I took the car to one of their dealers and they refused to service my vehicle if I did not pay upfront. I called another of their dealers but they also said I would have to pay for the diagnostic. I then called corporate and also corresponded with them via email but they did not solve the problem. Ever since I have been involved in two separate collisions and the air bags did not deploy, also the horn stop functioning and after doing some online research I found out it also depends on the part that was supposed to be replaced to function, the steering wheel control such as cruise control etc. Also stopped working. Corporate has not gotten back to me and I feel they are just going to let it die out and not do anything about it. Meanwhile I am driving the vehicle without air bags, horn and steering wheel controls. I have no choice because my family only owns this vehicle. Please let me know what I need to do to get help to get a solution for this issue/s. Thank you. Note: at this moment I only have information related to one of the collisions but I could provide for the other if need be. Also, the car belongs to my wife (maria DE la luz alvarez) but I was the driver at both collisions as I am the primary driver in my family household.

I recently purchased my vehicle and immediately noticed what seems to be oil coming from the engine, pooling on top of the block but also leaking onto the ground after being parked for an hour or so. The walls around the engine, mainly on the left side or passenger side were saturated with presumably the same fluid. Under the car is also saturated from what I am guessing to be a leak, perhaps the same leak from atop the engine block. I've had the car repaired and paid for a system fault diagnostic, and in both cases haven't received any helpful info as to what it is, the cause or where the leak is coming from, or how to treat it. I very recently had the oil changed and the invoice showed a comment stating that my car appears to be leaking oil. There was no further commentary. I fear that my kia Rio may be dangerous to drive for reasons such as a fire hazard or breakdown from overheating possibly resulting in leaving me on the side of a highway, stranded. Also the a/c and heater do not operate as they should. The panel controls are out of whack and neither a/c or heat perform in sync with the commands. A mechanic has said this appears to be due to electrical issues, possibly with the main computer, though the systems fault diagnostics was performed after the mechanic informed me of this, and seeing that I was charged for that service I can only assume that the main computer is doing what it is meant to do, relaying the info to the tech's computer. I just don't know if I have a good car that needs a lot of work or if I'm driving a deathtrap. No recalls for this vehicle but I see a lot of kia's vehicles being recalled. And I believe they no longer make the kia Rio. Just at a loss as to what is happening and what to do about it. Times are tough financially or I would definitely have more proper detailed info to give, that or have a good running car. . .

The clock spring light came on the car is now having issues with the steering. I was told by kia dealership that this is a known problem for my car and that it needs to be replaced due to safety of driving since it effects the airbag. If it get stopped I can get a ticket for the light being on.

I was driving on public street loss control due to a pot hole in the street the car lost control flipping sliding then flip up right till it came to a stop on apt wall then when it was all over and done the airbag deployed go off on my arm right arm giving me second to third degree burns the purpose of the air bag ? I have broken back car was totaled now I got chronic pain everyday I lost my car am limited on mobilebility was going get screws placed on my back and un able to set walk or stand do to chronic pain.

I'm at 96k miles. The mechanic pulls codes for the airbags. They are showing a defect and the reason is unknown. I'm also hearing a rattling in the engine. We are discovering it is common in kia Rio and the reason kia gives is we are getting our oil changes done at places other than them. I used only experienced, licensed mechanics. The issue continues to go undiagnosed as to know if the engine will catch fire causing death or injury. The car is not safe. A fix need forced. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly; 4 - VIN corrected, error in one position only (indicated by ! in suggested VIN), multiple matches found; 14 - unable to provide information for all the characters in the VIN. #vpic#.

The car was involved in a major accident. The car hit a fence knocked it down & hit a tree it is completely inoperable. The car was totaled. None of the airbags deployed.

Tl the contact owns a 2006 kia Rio. While driving 50 mph, the contact had a seizure and crashed head on into a tree. The contact was injured and hospitalized. A police report was filed. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 189,000.

My airbag light will not go off for my passenger side!!! I think it is absolutely ridiculous that my car is not included in the recall because it definitely should be! what everybody says about the 2005 to the 2008 kia Rios and the 2001 to 2008 kia Rios is the same thing that is happening with my kia Rio which is a 2009. . . Can y please add my vehicle too??? also in the latest class action lawsuit it talks about the passenger seat pad sensor being broken and that's what breaks the passenger airbag so how in the world is my car not included in this?.

I only drive my car to work and back, it had never been in any kind of accident. The other day I drive to work, work my 8 hours then get in my car to drive home and the air bag dash light comes on, the light would come on and off for a couple days, now it just stays on. I did some research and found that many many people are having the same issue with this car, supposedly this happens once you get in the 80+ thousand mile mark. I checked under my seats for loose connection and found nothing. I also looked at how much the dealer charges and its astronomical. It being a safety issue I think this should be considered as a recall.

On November 18, 2018 at approximately 6:30pm, I was involved in a car accident where I rear ended a car in front of me while moving around 30 mph in the merging ramp of hwy 57 to hwy 210 near san dimas, CA and I filed a police report. The airbag did not inflate/deploy.

As I was driving straight through an intersection of which I had a green light, the vehicle coming the opposite way through the intersection failed to yield and took a left turn hitting me head-on. We were each going between 30-35 miles per hour. I slammed my head on the steering wheel, shearing my brain from the inside of my skull resulting in a massive internal bleed. I also suffered a severe concussion and tore several ligaments in my neck. I currently continue to suffer from terrible migraines and have been unable to resume my previous profession as an architect. Why did my airbag not protect me from slamming my head on the steering wheel? it seems my airbag only partially deployed. I remember it touched my face but definitely did not protect me from hitting my head on the steering wheel. I was in a serious brain fog for months after the accident and my lawyer mis-advised me in not pursuing legal action against the airbag manufacturer. Now the car has been sold for parts.

Was envolved in a wreck to where I went off the road hit a stop sign,,a telephone box,,a oak tree then a pine tree and none of the airbags deployed now my wife has a broken back and chest bone,,I got a busted up knee a sprang sholder neck and back.

Upon research I was able to find out that the kia Rio has the same engine used in the kia optima which has been recalled. Just recently metal shavings were found my kia Rio why are not all cars with the same engine being recalled?.

Takata recall the air bags are not working properly the light comes on saying they're not working and that they won't go off in a crash it happens every time I turn my car on.

Both driver and passenger air bags deployed in my 2015 kia Rio while driving on a dry smooth road in a neighborhood for no reason. There were three people in the car, and the passenger was injured from the air bag deployment.

Vehicle was involved in a collision 7/7/2017. It rear-ended a 2014 Volkswagen beetle at approximately 35 mph. The vehicle will likely be totaled due to extensive damage to the front end. Per photos, front fascia was destroyed, damage extended into the engine compartment, and the engine will no longer start nor run. However, the srs airbag located in the steering wheel (per photo) never deployed. Thankfully, driver (our son) was, as always, wearing his seatbelt and sustained no injuries.
