6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Sephia

Failure Date: 10/19/2001

On board diagnostic system (check eng. Light) monitors emissions, but can be tripped off by a loose fuel filler cap as per the owner's manual explanation sec. 4-32. It seems that this is a safety problem when such a light can come on with such regularity that it is listed in the vehicle owner's manual and yet the owner is supposed to heed the light each and every time regardless of his or her driving predicament? such an obviously faulty sensor system shouldn't be allowed in cars. I was told by my service dealer that I would be charged for all future "repairs" since I was negligent in securing the fuel cap according to them. I hardly think that I was negligent in securing the fuel cap three times in a five month period, it really isn't that difficult. I believe the obd is faulty since the owner's manual even points out its oversensitivity to "loose" fuel caps. It wouldn't surprise me if it isn't the fuel cap at all, but rather the vapor recovery valves failing again and setting off the obd light.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Kia Motor Sephia

Failure Date: 08/18/2001

Engine light recurringly goes on. Diagnosed and repaired, previously, for emissions solenoid part failure. When brought in and, again, codes came up as emissions / small evap leak in system, dealership kept vehicle over 16 hours, told owner they could not locate an available kia mechanic to look at or work on, so they had a different manufacturer (Hyundai) without my authorization look at the vehicle. The Hyundai mechanic, svc mgr said, couldn't figure out what to do, and then svc manager told owner that the Hyundai mech moved some things under the hood and tightened gas cap, vehicle then seemed okay and vehicle okay to drive with engine light on- just not when flashing on and off' and if goes back on, bring back in when a kia mechanic could look at it. I told them that I did not feel safe driving, esp. As it had just been repaired for the emissions system/engine light several months before and could he please call other local dealer. He said he did not have access to their warranty work or their local system repair records and said not necessary for them to call or take to another kia dealership (even though other dealership only 20 minutes and a local phone call away). Also asked dealership to check transmission and change oil/wash (had dealership online coupons for latter svcs) of which, of course, no services done either (even after having vehcle over 16 hrs). Transmission still sticks/drags while driving and vehicle still random cold-start stalls.

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Kia Motor Sephia

Failure Date: 11/27/2000

The problems I am having or have had with this car are as follows, cooling system has completly froze up, water leak into the front passenger side under dash, molding around the doors replaced, 4 transmissions replaced, warped rotors which have also worn the brake pads. And I just recieved a recall notice for the on board refueling vapor recovery valves, which I am hoping will stop the gas from pouring out of the car onto me when I am refueling. This car is not road worthy. I have been in contact with the manufacturer and dealer they both just point the finger at one another, when I purchased this vehicle I expected it to run.

15 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Kia Motor Sephia

Failure Date: 10/15/1999

10 days from date of purchase engine malfunction light has been on, sometimes not all the time. Have lemon law arrbitration hearing coming on the 12th of sept 2000. This problem is on going with very little input from the factory or dealer. Each time except for final repair order under lemon law, there was a problem with the emissions control systems, which is ongoing as of this date. Vehicle owners manual clearly states that prolonged driving with malfunction indicator light on may cause damage to the emissions control systems which could effect driveability/and or fuel economy. Dealer and kia motors are very evasive on subject. Purpose of this note is to make any future buyers of kia products on guard, an possibly gather other victims of the kia corp for a class action law suit.
