Vehicle was in motion when the engine failed on a major highway. Replaced engine 2-3 years ago for the same reason, turned into local kia dealership and they refuse to replace the engine saying its not covered under warranty. The dealership is refusing to do a full inspection of the engine. Contacted kia consumer affairs and they're also refusing to let dealership perform a full inspection of the engine to determine cause of failure. Vehicle has been at monroeville kia since 06/12/2020 and they have been extremely poor in keeping us updated of progress or not. Kia recall number sc147 NHTSA number 17v224000.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While the contact's daughter was driving 70 mph, the engine completely failed without warning. The vehicle was towed to hart kia (1361 e main st, salem, va 24153, 540-444-4444) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed. The contact was also informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 118,000.
2nd complain for kia engine. Dec. 2017 my engine seized. I spent on 5grand for a rebuilt engine. Original complaint was electrical system did not give me any indication that there was an issue with my oil or engine. Driving down a main street where my car suddenly died. I had to pull off to the side of the road. I was able to restart it. Once it was restarted you can hear loud clicking from the engine. Fast forward to a year and 4 months later. Rebuilt engine on Feb 2018. . Car died again on 7/16/19. Once again no indication that there was a problem with my car. No oil light. I was driving on the highway when my car was not picking up on accelerating. I decided after work I put some oil into my engine. Schedule an appt with my mechanic to have my oil changed. The next day my car would not start. Had my mechanic tow my car and later tells me that it was my engine again. Stated he could find an engine for over 3grand for me. Unfortunately I do not have the money. I am now out of a car again with a newborn and trying to find rides to and from work. I just recently moved and cannot afford this. My VIN is not listed in the recalls and it should be. Kia has faulty engines and it is not just the one engine. Last engine failure was at 65000 miles. This time it is at 69000 miles. Why are my oil lights not coming on when there is low oil? why was this problem not fixed to begin with??? other problems with my car is my handle in the back seat pulled off (I am not that strong) electrical system (oil light not coming on, cruise control knocks out while driving, volume control for radio randomly calls contacts) kia is a lemon but I don't have the money to repair a 2nd and probably 3rd engine. I don't even trust my car with my kia dealership anymore because they are crooks and liars. I still have 10grand left to pay for this car!.
Vehicle shut down while stopped at a red light and the engine began smoking. Towed to the dealership (kia country if savannah) where they had 14 other 2012 kia Sorento waiting for new engines. Major catastrophic engine failure. Slug in the engine even though there has been routine oil changes. Claimed the engine wasn't getting oil but oil had been changed the day before with no reported issues.
While driving at approximately 45 mph the car turned off with the brakes and steering wheel locking. Luckily I was able to coast down the small hill to the side of the road. This incident took place on a two-lane city road. I had two passengers in my car at the time. The vehicle was towed to a local dealership with the diagnosis of engine failure (seizing). The vehicle was just picked from service the day before and there was no indication or warning that I would experience any safety issues.
I had the motor replaced in Jan 2018 for engine failure rod knocking metal shavings on the dip stick, it just shut off going down the interstate and now its the same issue again, going down the interstate started knocking and the car just shut off. No oil on the dip stick again with metal shavings.
Engine bearing failure very similar to engine recall for the other types of kia 2. 4 Sorento engines. This engine is a 2. 4l dohc cvvt 4-cyl. Catastrophic engine failure needs new engine.
Our 80,000 mile vehicle experienced a complete engine failure out of the blue, no warning. We had taken very good care of the car. It is not part of the gdi engine recall, we have a dual overhead cam (dohc) engine. The dealer ship refused assistance as it is not part of the recall, though the same problem occurred with the engine. The entire engine must be replaced.
The vehicle was being driven down the highway and it began knocking. It was pulled over almost immediately (within a mile). Oil was checked and although it had regular service, it registered low. After about a half a quart of oil was added, the oil registered at proper level. When trying to re-start the engine it failed to start. The vehicle was towed to dealership where it was determined that the vehicle had catastrophic engine failure and would need a complete engine replacement. Price quoted was $15,000! they claimed this was due to the engine needing to be replaced with a smaller block (they don't make the 3. 5 l anymore) and the modifications that it needed. The car was purchased used, had 125,054 miles on it and had no warning prior to the initial knocking that occurred on that day.
My car is starting to rattle on cold starts only. It now has 142000 and still has the issue. I took my car to summit place kia and they said my car doesn't fall under technical bulletin 140 even though it falls under the engine type and manufacture date. I do routine maintenance with records and they said I missed the replacement window because I bought the car used. After reading multiple other complaints they have had the same issue then complete engine failure. When will kia take responsibility and replace the engines that they manufactured incorrectly? I have been dealing with kia since June of 2018 to help resolve this issue because 140 describes the issue to the exact problem and the sound provided matches the same issue I have. Bulletin 140 describes what needs to be fixed and how it needs to be fixed but kia wont replace the defective problem and wont take responsibility for it.
~tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving 65 mph, the engine failed without warning. The contact heard a loud bang and observed a huge cloud of black smoke emerging from the vehicle. The check engine and other instrument panel warning indicators illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road where it caught fire from underneath near the transmission. A police report was filed. The fire department extinguished the fire. Kia of lancaster, pennsylvania was made aware of the fire and stated that the exhaust hanger had melted. It was determined that rod #4 blew into the transmission, which caused the engine to fail. There were no injuries. The failure mileage was 81,000. The VIN was not available.
Complete engine failure. While passing a large truck on a narrow two lane highway the engine completely shut down midway through the pass. Momentum allowed the car to complete the pass, but due to the speed and without power steering it was very difficult to maneuver. Fortunately I was familiar with the road and able to make it safely to a pull off. My local repair garage determined the engine is seized, with metal fragments in the oil. Have made multiple attempts to contact the dealer where the car was purchased. To date, no response. Car is currently not drivable.
Received letter from kia 'extending' the warranty to 120,000 miles to cover connecting rod problem that could result in engine failure. Several months after receiving letter and car at 147k the engine failed failed while driving on highway, kia dealer said it was failed connection rod. Now kia denies claim since past 120k. This is a known defect and should have been a recall!! very upset that kia knew of defect and is not willing to take ownership.
Catastrophic engine failure, stationary, engine seized up after owning it for 10 months. 104,000 miles, oil changes regular, metal shavings in oil, no oil lights or engine lights on.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was restarted, but would not accelerate. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving out of a parking lot at 5 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,000. The VIN was not available.
While driving on i95 we began hearing a noise from the engine. It was faint at first, just a pinging that would happen when we pushed the accelerator down. We just had an oil change at 94,000 miles so knew our oil level was good. The faint noise grew steadily louder over the next 30 minutes and we pulled off the highway and into a service/gas station. The mechanics came out when they heard us pull up. They knew almost immediately that it was catastrophic engine failure and would need major repairs if not a rebuild. The kia dealer is going to confirm today, but I beileve that it is an engine connection pin that broke. We were told we were lucky it did not break and puncture the engine block while we were driving.
On March 14, 2014 while driving approximately 60 mph on a highway I heard a noise in my engine. I was attempting to maneuver off the highway so I could have my vehicle towed to the local kia dealership. I was in the middle lane of a three lane highway during rush hour when my engine shot one of the engine rods through the bottom of my engine block. This caused a larger than a silver dollar sized hole in the bottom of the engine block and separated the engine from where it is secured to the vehicle. Kia and the dealership have yet to be able to fix my vehicle which is completely covered under the manufactures warranty as I have had all of my routine maintenance and service preformed at a local kia dealership. They replaced a remanufactured short block assembly in my vehicle on 3/28/14 I was told to pick up my vehicle later that afternoon. I received a call back that the mechanic was on the phone with one of kia's engineers because of a noise coming from my engine. They are now re-replacing a remanufactured short block assembly in my vehicle which is unacceptable to me because of all of the issues kia is having with their engines. I still do not have an eta as of 4/9/14 of when I will have my vehicle repaired as I am unsure they have even diagnosed the problem correctly because of all of the force behind the engine failure and they are unsure when another remanufactored engine will be avalible.
