Vehicle unexpectedly will intensely jerk and immediately locks up the driving controls as the engine stalls and starts to seize causing the vehicle to stop while driving on highways, and restraining from any acceleration, steering, or power use.
The vehicle, a 2012 kia Sorento with 95719 miles, is up to date on all recalls as it is regularly serviced at the dealership. While entering a busy highway on 6/13/2020, and accelerating past 45mph, the engine stalled. The check engine and battery lights came on, making it seem like the car wasn't even started. We were able to pull the vehicle off to the shoulder, put it into park, and tried to start it again. The car acted like normal on starting (starter turned, power was available) for everything but the engine turning on. We called a tow truck and the family mechanic. The alternator and battery were fine, no error codes were detected on the can bus reader instrument, so everything seemed normal on the computer. After numerous attempts to start the vehicle in park, the vehicle was able to start in neutral. This is a potentially deadly stalling fault for a vehicle to have on any roadway.
Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Sorento. The contact stated that the engine stalled. The engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the contact residence and later towed to the independent mechanic and was diagnosed that oil was int the engine and it was lock. The engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage approximately was 140,000. Aw.
The engine stalled out without warning and would not restart while driving, in moderate traffic at about 30mph.
As I was driving down the freeway the engine stalled. As I made my way to the shoulder and came to a stop I noticed smoke coming out of the hood. Once I came to a stop I got out of the car. As soon as I came to a stop I got out. When I closed the drivers door the hood burst into flames. By the time that the firefighters got the there the entire car was up in flames.
I was driving down the highway when my cars engine seized up. I lost all control of the breaks and power stearing and it was smoking as I coasted to the shoulder. I was able to get the car seats out of the back and let it cool down some but the electric in it was not working so it wouldnt turn over. It left me stranded a little over an hour from my house with 2 infants. I had it towed home and changed the battery in it to see if it would turn over and it did. When I was able to get the car running again there was a knocking in the engine and the car would stall if I put the car in gear and press the gas. When I called kia they told me my VIN wasnt covered in the engine recall so im filing a complaint.
The engine stalled without warning, no warning lights previous to the stall. On the highways traveling about 60 mph when many warning lights all appeared at the same time of the stall. Upon towing the car to a nearby shop we were initial informed it appears the engine has seized.
My son was driving our 2012 kia Sorento and as he exited the freeway to the service road and approached the intersection which was on an uphill grade, the engine suddenly stalled. He lost braking and steering control on the car. The car rolled backwards into the car behind him and collided with the car resulting in $1,820 damage to the other car. The engine had seized and threw a rod into the vehicle starter.
The car was in motion (~30 mph) when the engine stalled and smoke came out of the drivers side hood. I put the car in park, exited vehicle and it erupted into flames. The car was completely burned within minutes. The engine was replaced by kia under warranty January 2018; less than 2 weeks later the starter was replaced because the car failed to start when parked and off. The catalytic converter was replaced March 2018 because the car was losing power and a strong gas odor was detected. The car fire occurred 2 days after it was picked up from this repair.
I have had documented engine issues identical to the symptoms described in the recall sc147 communication. I am attaching documentation of these engine concerns, specifically hiccuping/sputtering/skipping idle and near stall-outs. Today I went to the kia dealer and was informed that my engine did not qualify for any repairs because it passed the brief test they did on it. The purpose of this communication is state that I do not accept the conclusions of the kia dealer today and I formally requested to the kia corporation that the engine on my kia vehicle be repaired promptly to correct the issues identified in recall sc147. The engine in my kia vehicle has has documented issues identical to the sc147 issues since I purchased and still does today. Given this, I am concerned about the safety of my family -- my engine may stall out put my family in harm's way. At this time, I am awaiting communication from kia corporation.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving 2 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact called a local dealer (san luis bay motors kia located at 2700 theatre dr paso robles, CA 93466 805 239 8700) who stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The contact notified the manufacturer and no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 109,000.
My engine seized while driving on to ramp to highway. My car cut off and was unresponsive. I forced the car to the side of the on-ramp during rush hour traffic. At this time, I had to have my vehicle towed. There is a recall on the 2012 kia Sorento engine for it stalling while driving. I called kia corporate for assistance with this matter and they are giving us the run-around. I have had the vehicle bore scoped, proving seizing of the engine. In addition, I am a licences air-frame and power-plant mechanic so I know my way around a car. This was very dangerous and unexpected situation to be in.
The first time I was driving at 35-45 mph and slowed to turn and my engine spontaneously stalled and steering wheel locked up. Luckily, no one was around me so I braked, and restarted the engine and car seemed to reboot fine. Today, it happened again except I was driving at a much slower speed, 15 mph. I was ready to take a turn and the wheel locked up in the turned position (but not fully turned) and the engine stalled. I braked the car again and restarted the engine in the middle of an intersection. This is completely dangerous for all passengers of the car and everyone who's driving around me!.
Kia Sorento stalled when approaching a stop sign at low speeds of 10-15 miles per hr. There was no sound or damage. Dealer not able to recreate situation so no repairs. This has happened couple of times in last two years. Symptoms are yellow engine light turns on and car engine stalls. After putting car in parking and pressing ignition button on would re-start the engine. Please follow up as this is a safety hazard as car can stalls in moving traffic.
I leased my kia Sorento 2012 lx v6 awd new, after about 5 or 6 months I noticed when breaking to slow down the car the engine sometimes stalls completely, once I shift back in n I can restart the engine. This happens completely randomly, there is no rhyme or reason, there is absolutely nothing preceding this incident, it happens on its own, once actually it happened while the car was completely stopped at red light. I have been to the dealership many many times, they even went so far as to calling a kia field tech to come inspect the car, lastly they installed an electronic device which was apparently recording anything happening to your engine, and sure enough about a week after installation I had the same issue, I pressed the button but upon returning to kia dealership I was told the device had not recorded anything, apparently no codes are generated when the engine stalls this way. I have no idea how this can be resolved since no one knows how exactly this occurs and the issue cannot even be replicated.
While turning onto busy street, engine stalled in middle of street. Brake and gas pedals were depressed at same time. Must have foot completely off brake when accelerating from stop or vehicle will stall and not advance forward. Happens almost every time both are pressed at same time.
