I was driving and suddenly heard a knocking noise under the hood and then all of the lights came on and it broke down and I had to pull over on the side of the road then it started smoking and then it caught fire. This all happened within 20 minutes on 12/10/2020. It was in cobb county GA off of ew connector and in between fontaine rd and floyd rd.
I was driving on the highway going from arizona to utah, suddenly I hear a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. The car starts losing power and then completely seized up, luckily we were able to pull over. We turned off the car and tried to turn it on again but it wasn't turning on.
I was driving and heard a knocking sound. I came to a stop sign and the car stalled. It restarted but had no power. I turned and tried to go a little further had no power. I managed to get the car off road and into the bypass lane. Car would not start again. I had to call for tow truck.

The vehicle was taken to greenway kia of rivergate, 1536 gallatin pike n, madison, TN 37115, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact mention the dealer only completed an oil. Change. The vehicle was towed back to the same dealer and was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. The contact mention that the vehicle was just purchased sometime in February from the same dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. Aw.
My 2012 kia Sorento lx has 144,566 miles on it and has been maintained regularly since I purchased it in July 2018. In October 2019, my vehicle was in motion going roughly 40 mph when the vehicle suddenly lost power. The engine began knocking and the steering wheel locked up. Upon coasting the vehicle into a nearby parking lot and attempting to start it, the vehicle began making an intense knocking noise coming from the engine. The vehicle had trouble maintaining power and continuously cut off, even after putting in a new battery and alternator. Upon checking the vehicle to see if it would throw any codes, it threw a "misfire in cylinder 2" code. Upon having the car inspected, I was told that it will need a new rod in the engine. This car has under 150,000 miles and has been maintained meticulously, but randomly threw a rod as I was driving down the road. After doing further research, it became apparent that 2012-2018 kia Sorentos have been recalled for this exact problem; my 2012 Sorento, however, is not covered under the recall according to a VIN check.
2012 kia serento 2/25/2017& kia had a "anti-corrosion"recall and we had it serviced at mike smith kia in paducah,ky-4/14/17,we will call this document1. Then we we received major engine recall in September 20,2017 about 2012 kia serento's stalling, document 2. We took the vehicle to wyatt johnson kia of TN. October 7,2017 & we were told if it did not pass their tests they would replace the engine. Ok,well they said it passed, and changed the oil,&supposedly put an "mil" sensor and"mil" dash light to detect oncoming engine failure and send the car into what they call a 'limp" mode. Which is not documented on document #3 which to our surprise it passed because it had been making an knocking sound and experiencing some attempt's of the vehicle stalling. Yes after the oil change ran some what smoother, but still every now and then we would get an occasional throttle spike,or an attempt to stall. Got an recall to do a logicupgrade,& took it immediately to wyatt j. Kia Dec. 12,2018,diagn. Did not detect code from knok sensor but cautioned,on perform fuel injection/throttle body service for $199. 95 documents #4&5 the we hear about this fuel pump and fuel line recall in michigan on 68,000 vehicles in our year, make and model, which raised a red flag to why our vehicle was continuing to throttle spike's and more apparent attempts to stall. However no recall on our's?have gotten 2 more recall's since on our vehicle, one headlamp low beam connector warranty extension,&two air bag clock spring, called kia to schedule an appoint. For replacement and asked about the fuel pump issue and it possibly being the reason for the throttle spikes & stall attempts all this time, but no recall for our vehicle, and want to charge$120+$199. For diag. And throttle body/fuel injection, but free replacement of air bag spring ass. ?have to keep oil changed, because start's to run really rough. This is getting old!.
While my vehicle was in motion on the highway going over 70mph my engine shut off, my speedometer dropped from 70 to 40 causing the vehicle behind me to have to pull into on coming traffic (two lane road going down mountain) to avoid slamming into my vehicle. Prior to this oil, check engine, and four wheel drive lights all began to flash. Pulled over, shut off vehicle and vehicle started after some struggle. Drove with hazards all the way home. Before this my vehicle would lose power while driving. My rpms would drop and hitting the gas did nothing. Every time vehicle starts making knocking sound before rattling and stalling out. Vehicle has been in motion every single time it loses power, or the engine stalls out. Immediately purchased car fax to see all open recalls on my vehicle. This is one of the major ones. Entire replacement of engine. Kia refuses to replace my engine and only kept my vehicle in the shop for 56 minutes before telling me it was ready for pick up. When engine is acting up, removing my foot from the gas does not slow the vehicle. This vehicle is incredibly dangerous and unpredictable.
Very disappointed in my kia Sorento. At 90000 miles it started making a knocking sound and when I took it in to get it checked out. I was told it had bearings wear and would need a new engine. After researching I found that there is a recall for this exact problem but the engine I have is not recalled. Hopefully you guys get more complaints on this because it's ridiculous that a car needs a new $6000 engine at 90,000 miles. I can't afford that I was recommending kia to friends and family and now since this happened I would never again buy or recommend a kia car ever.
Engine recall. Lately I been heard a knocking noise under the hood of my vehicle also I heard knocking noice from the exhaust pipe when I start the car as well. It comes n goes I hear it once in a while mainly in the morning when I first start the car. I hear it any other time once in a while. N I see lately there leakage coming threw the exhaust pipe as well. I took it to my machanic n he advised me to report to the dealer since it can b a possible recall.
My wife and I have been driving this vehicle for over 2 years now. About two years ago, this banging noise started which felt like we hit something or an object the road (just one big bang noise). The second time it happened we took it the aaa and they serviced it and made some repairs to it and replaced some parts. The noise went away and now (Feb 2019), I am driving on the highway at 60 miles per hour and it came back and happened three times already. Upon researching the cause of this issue, I am here on this site trying to find answers for these issues. Now, I do not want our car to catch fire since I've read a few people were experiencing this horrifying predicament. What are we to do? will kia take care of this issue before something worse happened? it seems to be case with these recalls, something terrible has to happen.
My 20 year old son was driving his 2012 kia Sorento on the highway at approximately 60 mph when the engine started to make a knocking noise and lost acceleration (he was pressing the gas pedal, but it felt like it wasn't doing anything. ) the knocking noise continued and grew louder. We took the car to a nearby garage, and the mechanic who looked at it said the crank bearing was bad and the engine was shot. He said replacing it would $5,000 or more. He said repairing likely wouldn't be an option because he has seen other kias with the same problem, and the engines were full of metal pieces. After researching, I learned of the recall for 2012 kia Sorentos for this very reason, but my son's VIN isn't listed, and it obviously should be. This vehicle only has 86,000 miles and has been serviced regularly. It was my husband's vehicle before, so we know it has had regular maintenance since the beginning. Even though the vehicle has stayed in the same household, it is now in my son's name so the warranty doesn't apply. Please add this vehicle to the recall! I don't have anything in writing from the mechanic, but the vehicle is still there and I can get that if needed.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving approximately 30 mph, the engine made a knocking noise and the check engine indicator illuminated. Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving approximately 10-15 mph, there was an abnormally knocking sound in the engine. Without warning, the vehicle stalled and was unable to be restarted. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 12995434. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Restrict oil flow to the bearings causing bearing wear. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a cyclic knocking noise from the engine. This issue happens when the car is on and driving in a city street and highway.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving various speeds, a knocking noise occurred coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to napleton's mid rivers kia (located at 4955 veterans memorial pkwy, st peters, mo 63376, (636) 206-4284) for diagnostic testing, but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where an oil consumption test was performed. The dealer stated that if the engine consumed oil, it needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 12997040. The approximate failure mileage was 114,276.
I was driving down the street when the car began to make a low knocking noise then it began to slow down until it came to a complete stop, and wouldn't turn over anymore. I had to get it towed to the mechanic. The mechanic took a look at the car and said that it was the motor. I didn't get any warning other that while I was driving it began to make a knocking noise and lights went on my dash, then stopped. I called kia spoke to a representative, she said that my car didn't qualify. So I'm stuck with a car payment and no car.
My car stalled out in the middle of the road while driving on a city street. I took it to the kia dealership certain it had to be the engine safety recall. They said it was not, blamed the issue on something else and charged me over $1,000 to fix it. I took the car home again. The next morning, it stalled again while driving in the middle of a main city road. I heard a knocking sound from the engine and then it died. Kia is putting my family's lives at risk.
Tl- the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. The contact stated there was abnormal knocking noise progressing and then the motor failed to function. The dealer crain kia of sherwood (5830 warden rd, sherwood, ar 72120, (501) 542-6042) diagnosed that the engine assembly needed to be replaced and that the vehicle was not included in the manufacturer recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, refused to provide a good will assistance to the vehicle owner due to high mileage and indicated that the vehicle would need to be repaired by the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000. Dyd.
There is a recall on 2012 kia Sorento engine but my VIN will not show up that there is a recall. My engine seized with only 69000+miles on it and just like all the other recalled vehicles. I was driving one day and my car suddenly shut down. No engine light or oil light. I had to get a jump to actually get my care started again. After the jump my engine started making a loud knocking sound. My care has never gave me any indication that there was any problems or any random sounds. Now I am either forced to pay over 5 grand for an engine for a car that I have only had for 2 years or buy a new car. I am also still making payments on this car.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. The contact stated that there was an abnormal knocking noise progressing near the engine compartment area and, upon exiting a ramp, the vehicle stalled. The contact was included in a recall but not yet notified of NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. I received a interim safety recall on 6/30/17 (attached). On 6/21/17 while travelling on the highway (rt. 80) going 70mph the engine lost all power. There was no knocking sound or warning light as the notice had stated would be an indicator to a possible problem. I luckily was able to pull over to the side of the road before the car completely stopped operating . Fortunately I was travelling in the left lane. Had I been in any other lane there would have been no way I could have pulled over the vehicle. The engine lost power that quickly without warning. I had to have to car towed off the highway and contacted kia. A case was opened and I was advised that the car would have to be inspected to determine if it was due to the recall that the engine stopped. I received a call the next day that indeed the engine was part of the recall and I would be receiving a new engine. Kia has not communicated with me in regards to the eta of the repair. I called the deal who had no idea when the car would be repaired. After contacting kia I was given an eta of 7/15/17. Case # 12385542.
We had struggled with the check engine lights on the car coming on and going off randomly. Had the camshaft position sensor replaced twice. Returned from a 11 day vacation and upon starting the car there was a knocking sound from the engine. Took it to a mechanic in town immediately for fear something was wrong with the car. The next day received a recall letter from kia but the mechanic in town had already run diagnostics and found several things wrong with the engine. Took it to kia per the recall and they reported that the diagnostic tool could find nothing wrong and that the engine was fun. I took it to a Toyota dealership for trade assessment and they too told me the engine was bad. I have since traded the car in because a mechanic I trust advised me to do so. When this car was first purchased it was involved in an accident that was unreported and repaired by the dealership. I've constant trouble with the wiring and honesty of kia. I no longer own the vehicle but I suffered an expense to replace it because kia claimed this vehicle was unaffected. I did not feel safe driving it any longer.
Our 2012 kia Sorento was in motion on the highway when a loud knocking sound began. At this point the engine seized and the car stalled. It had to be towed to the kia dealer and a new engine had to be put in. We were told by the service manager at the kia dealership that recall sc147 addresses 2012 kia Sorento's and the exact same issue as our car had. However, the recall does not include her engine type. Given what happened to our 17 year old daughter and the dangerous situation that she was put in, we feel that these Sorento engine types should also be included in the recall. Kia consumer affairs was contacted and they refused to provide any type of compensation or add this vehicle engine type to the recall.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving 90 mph, the engine failed without warning. The contact stated that there was a knocking noise from inside the engine and the vehicle lost power. In addition, the vehicle would not switch gears and decreased in acceleration until the contact reached the dealer. Cathedral city kia of cathedral city, California replaced the engine in the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and stated that the failure was included in an unknown recall; however, the contact's VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 97,000.
Within the week before Wednesday, 10/12/16, both my wife and I heard a "clicking" noise from the engine compartment. We notified our local auto mechanic and they, too, heard the noise but we're not able to make any diagnosis. Then, on the date noted, after accelerating into traffic on a 4-lane hwy (hwy 101, south toward santa rosa, CA), at a speed of about 65 mph, there was a loud, alarming knocking noise in the engine. The engine did not die / quit, but we were able to brake and pull off immediately. It was obvious that we could not proceed safely, so we called a tow truck to take us back to lakeport. There our mechanic informed us of the need of an engine replacement.
On my way to work I hear a loud pop. Then after that I could hear a knocking noise every time I accelerated. I had the car towed to the dealership I bought the car at. I was told I had a rod knocking, if I could provide proof of oil changes every 7500 miles they would see if kia would cover this. My oil is changed every 5000 but done at home not a dealership or lube place. I did not keep my receipts of oil and filter bought. Therefore I was out of luck. They could get a rebuilt motor for $6100 with a year warranty. But, they could not find a used motor. The general manager at the dealership was so rude to me on the phone and even used foul language. He said that I had never serviced my car which is nowhere near the truth.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle made a knocking noise from the engine. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine rods were twisting and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.
I purchased the vehicle from drivetime in laurel MD on 5/9/16. On 5/10/16 I heard a knocking sound coming from the engine area and the vehicle started pulling wile raddling. On 5/10/16 & 5/11/16 I made the dealer aware of the kia having engine issues. On 5/13/2016 the car started dragging and wouldn't go above 60mph. Then the car stopped in the middle of 95n going towards ex 43. This was very scary, the wheel locked up and the car lost power so I ended up drifting out of control to the rights side of the road in the middle of rush hour traffic. . . I¿m so lucky to be alive today. . . This vehicle was in motion on the highway. . . It sad to know that maryland inspected and passed that death trap.
Tl- the contact owns a 2012 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph a loud banging noise came from the engine. After stopping the vehicle and lifting up the hood the contact discovered smoke, oil and a small flame coming from the engine. The flame self extinguished. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the vehicle had experienced a catastrophic engine failure. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufactured was not notified. The failure mileage was 129,000. Jft.
My 2012 kia Sorento was running fine, no warning whatsoever. I was on the highway when I heard a flutter noise that turned into a knocking sound. Had the car towed to dealer. Tow truck driver started the car and drove it approximately 60 ft to a parking spot. I was told by the dealer I had catastrophic engine failure and that the engine was seized tight (which was not true at all) due to neglect. I have provided kia corp. And the dealer with all of the service records as well as the oil purchase receipts, oil filter receipts and oil change records. Oil changes were performed to what kia's manual suggests. I have done research and have found numerous kia owners with the exact same issue I had. Their complaints are almost exactly word for word what happened to my kia. Something needs to be done about this. . . Most kia owners had this catastrophic engine failure happen on the highway or when their teenagers were driving. Kia has a class action law suit against them for this very reason. Please do something before someone really gets hurt. I was very lucky there was not a lot of traffic and was able to get off of the highway. If there were traffic and I was not able to get off of the highway. . It could gave resulted in much worse. Please I am begging you to do something about this. I have came across so many people in stores, restaurants, and dealers while looking for another car to be able to get my child to and from school, football, etc. I still have a loan on my kia and now have another loan because this issue. Kia has based my warranty repair on pictures the dealer took. They absolutely refuse to listen to me nor help me. I begged and pleaded with them to look further into it and they wanted nothing to do with it. Then I was told there was nothing else they could do and I needed to get my car off of their lot.
My car shut off while driving on the highway (doing about 70mph) back in the summer of 2013. Luckily, there was no traffic so I was able to coast over to the side of the highway to restart my car (push button start). They said it was the crankshaft sensor. On August 7, 2014 (44,516k), 8 oil changes using synthetic oil and kia oil filters (2 generic), my engine was making a fluttering noise and then a knocking noise. End result, they said I neglected my car and needed a new engine. Kia motors outright refused to fix my car under the warranty. Even when proof of oil changes was done. I had no warning whatsoever. No smoke of any kind coming from the tailpipe, not sluggish, no warning lights, nothing. Kia motors never fixed my car. It sat dead in my driveway for over 15 months. I finally wrote a letter to the owner of the dealership back on June 3, 2015 and she contacted me in October and said that, "if anyone has pull with kia, it's me, I own the dealership, and they won't even talk to me about your car. " she ended up replacing my engine with a used one, got it all ready for inspection and put newer tires on it so that it would pass inspection and offered to pay for half the cost ($4200, I paid $2100). This is a very big problem. I am hearing of more and more people having the exact same issue I did. Even one person who stated all of their vehicles maintenance was done through the dealership and Kia Motors still refused to fix their car under the warranty. Something needs to be done about this. Let's not wait until god forbid someone gets killed because of this issue.
I used mobile one 5w30, I used kia oil filters (2 generic), I had 44,516k miles on it on August 7, 2014. I did 8 oil changes. My car was running perfectly fine. No white or black smoke, no dashboard lights, not sluggish, nothing and the engine seized without warning. I was on the highway doing about 65 when I heard a fluttering noise that very quickly turned into a knocking noise. I could barely pull over without almost getting hit twice. I had it towed to the dealership and they said I never did any oil changes and there was approximately 20k miles worth of sludge in my engine. My oil was changed around March 7, 2014. Kia motors down right refused to even lol at it. I hired and attorney who wrote a demand letter and 4 months later they down right refused to fix it under the warranty. My car sat in my driveway for over 15 months. I reported this to NHTSA back in late 2012 early 2013. I wore a letter to the owner of the dealership and she put a used engine in it and paid for half. Needless to say I'm happy I have my car back but I don't trust it. I have the top of the line sx awd and I also added the ambient lighting and tinted the front windows. I love my car but feel I should be compensated for the shear hell and huge financial burden it has caused my family. I've had it back since November 12, 2016 and the financial burden is still haunting my family.
Driving on highway and heard a loud knocking noise like something was loose in engine. No acceleration and luckily had an exit close to pull off side of the road. Car would turn on, but would not drive at all. Car was towed to nearby dealership. We were 8 hours away from home when this happened. Kia was not helpful at all with dealing with this. Customer service was terrible. We had all paperwork for oil changes in car and they made the dealership fax them over before starting any work - which happened to be 4 days later because they still didn't want to authorize kia to work on the car. Kia made it seem like we had done something wrong even though the car only had 19,000 miles on it. We finally got the car authorized to work on and were authorized to get a rental car (on day 5). We went back home, the car was stuck in town 8 hours away getting worked on. When car was done, kia wanted my husband to drive 8 hours to pick up the car! they argued and argued with us until they finally agreed to put it on a truck and have it transported. Service paperwork showed that there was a lot of metal debris in bottom of oil pan. They replaced the long block assembly. When they replaced that, they found the oil filter to be damaged and replaced that as well.
