Kia Motor Sorento owners have reported 12 problems related to air bag on-off switch (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor Sorento based on all problems reported for the Sorento.
There is an apparent issue with the steering column causing the airbag to not function. It is also causing all of the control switches on the steering wheel to not function properly, including the cruise control. It came on when set but then wouldn't go off using the cancel button. This is a huge safety concern. The estimated cost for repair is $1700.

My airbag light went off a few months ago. I originally thought is was a short because it went off anytime I moved the passenger seat around. I had my service tech check it a few times, and he reset it. He eventually said I should take it to kia. They diagnosed it and said the OCS mat was bad. It was the passenger seat occupancy sensor. I was quoted $2601. 29 for just the part! they said I needed the whole cushion assembly. This is totally ridiculous. Imo, they should put a backup switch to override this if they're going to put faulty parts in their seats. Or, they should construct a better way to repair these without a complete seat replacement. It basically means, if I was in a head on collision, the passenger side airbag wouldn't think anyone is present in the seat. So, it wouldn't trigger the airbag on that side. I've contemplated building a bypass to force the airbag to go off even if no one is in the seat during a collision. It was so bad for the 2009 version, that you can purchase the bypass for $50. But, there's no good documentation on the 2012 model. I do have 142,000 miles on the car. But, I would bet that the passenger seat has been used about 30% of that. So, this is a case of a bad part. I have pampered this car. It still looks new. I paid it off and had planned to drive it until it blew up. Now, I'm considering getting rid of it and buying a new car. I'd prefer to drive free for awhile. But, I'm certainly not paying $3000 to fix this. I knew they had a recall on previous models for this exact same thing. I'm not convinced they changed anything for the 2012 model. But, that's just my opinion. I can provide additional documentation for this as needed.

Hello, I am 2nd owner @51,000 k with no known accidents to this SUV. From 51,073k I discovered the 2nd row seat latch was faulty and I couldn't fold the seat down. I had the latch replaced and it was fine and only used it about eight imes. Then @ 68,000k found it was using/ burning oil. The repair cost quoted for this is $3,600. Ever since I've had to add up to four quarts of 5w20 between oil changes. At 85,000k the same seat latch quit working again. I was quoted $110 for the replacement latch and book install calls for 3. 1 hours equalling close to $340. Also from 87,000k to current (116,007k) there has been a slurry of seemingly random oddities: a) the electrical system has had five glitches. Moments lasting less than 40 sec. Where all the warning lights flash and chimes sound, completely out of the blue. It has happened while driving, while parked but running and when starting after getting fuel. B) the ignition switch sticks occ. Which sounds the 'key in' chime and prevents doors from locking. C) there is an insane amount of air flow coming in around the door hinge areas, center console/ arm rest and beneath the seats; front and back. Temporary fix, in the IA winters my children and I have blankets over our laps and behind our legs. . . And the extra winter garm is strategically placed to try and block air flow. D)the motor makes a ping/ knock, metal on metal sound @69k. Fresh to 72hr oil its fine. E) the driver airbag light came on @115,996k. I drove to town, 7. 4 miles, the light was off, nothing wrong. I parked, left SUV running at the gas, ran inside to grab coffee and doughnuts, came out less than five mins later and saw the light on. Stayed on after I buckled. Thankfully it's not flashing, just on, as of 7:36am on 3/31/18. Please help. I'm one adult trying to care for two kids. My children and other drivers need better safety than this. Thank you.
My passenger side air bag will not become active if I use my air cushion. I need to be able to activate the air bag. Kia tells me to bad . I need to use a cushion for medical reasons. I want the air bag to be active . I paid for this feature. Kia said I can't use a cushion. I feel the air bag should be active all of the time regardless please require them to put switch on this feature to activate the air bag?.

My 2009 kia Sorento (87810 miles) has had electrical problems since 2014. In sept 2014, while warranty was void due to over 60, 000 miles) I had trouble with the dashboard illumination lights when the headlights were turned on. $1,000+ dollars later, dimmer switch, instrument cluster, and rheostat circuit were repaired. In December 2015, started to happen again but now the air bag light came on and won't go off. Took in January, and $275 more, replaced dimmer switch again and cleaned the connection to air bag sensor. Three days later, the air bag light is on again. Further inspection and it is determined the the "OCS" sensor needs to be replaced to the tune of $1900 for parts and $200 for labor.

Original owner '11 Sorento 4cyl, awd w/tow package & approx 88k miles. Problem 1st noticed about 2 mos ago when seat belt light began flashing with audible clicking coming from relay behind dash. It was daytime when this happened 1st few times & I could not duplicate problem. This issue seemed to happen after starting car & would go away after a few moments of driving. Releasing & re-connecting seat belt had no effect. The 1st time it happened @ night I realized that the headlights & dash lights would flash on & off also. Still could not duplicate problem, but being a mechanic I watched for it to happen and tried different things to see if they had any effect on the issue. Always would begin after initially starting car, but not do it most times. Then 3 evenings ago, I found it happening every time I would start the car & would even do it afterwards driving down the road. I was 70 miles from home & tried to get back. It didn't matter whether the headlight switch was on, off or auto, it would still flash all lights & seatbelt light w/clicking from relay. On the way home, while driving a rural road, the lights again started blinking on & off causing me to hit a metal pole a drainage ditch thru farmer's fence into his field. Accident pushed metal bumper (behind bumper cover) back about 12", tore the entire front end &lights from car & bent hood back 1 1/2 feet and buckled it upward - all of this without ever deploying the airbag. These problems are prevalent in this car as I have read, but I now have a vehicle which despite it's damage will now duplicate the lights going on & off every time the car is turned on. Have contacted kia corp in hopes that they will want to use my car to get to the cause of this issue & finally correct it. As a mechanic I very well understand the need to be able to duplicate problem to find cause . . . . . Kia now has no excuse.

After jump starting the 2nd battery installed by kia in 5 years 4 months 21 days on my kia Sorento, the air bag warning light came on and stayed on. I took it to my dealer and asked if this meant that my air bags would not work, they said they thought that might be the case so I had them look at it. I was told that the air bag module assy needed to be replaced at 37,697 miles at the cost of $864. 45 and of course my car was 4 months and 21 days out of warranty. It seems to me that something this critical for safety should never go out and certainly be covered under warranty this close to 5 years. My stop lamp switch went out 10/11/2011, 8,031 miles and was fixed under warranty and then on 4/1/2013 it was recalled. I hope they do not wait this long for the airbag module to be recalled and I would hope they would also reimburse for the replacement that I have paid for. I notice that I am not the only person with this complaint regarding the airbag problem on the 2011 kia Sorento.
The contact owns a 2011 kia Sorento. While driving 60-70 mph, the contact attempted to switch lanes due to construction on the highway and crashed into the preceding vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The front passenger sustained fractures on her ribs, nose, cervix, and pelvic bone. The rear passenger sustained right optical bone and sinus bone fractures. The contact sustained a right leg injury, hip fracture, and spinal injuries. Medical attention was required for the contact and the two passengers. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000.
2011 kia Sorento airbag light came on out the blue. Took to dealership was advised either defective passanger airbag or the sensor for passenger seat. Would have to pay $$$ to put on diagnostic. Car jerks forward when switching gears. Also, car just accelerated by itself. . Put the car in park and it jerks forward. Its jerks so hard I could get whiplash. Like the car doesn't want to stop. Scarriest thing ever. I am really concerned how sometimes I don't even have to press the brake to put in gear. Last, went to change headlight, rightside extremely jot and could hear boiling like something cooking.
I lease a 07 kia Sorento with 8700 miles on it. The problem that I can't get resolved through the dealer or with kia's customer service is the passenger airbag doesn't always work. They say we like to complain, but I don't want to take a chance of being in an accident and hope the airbag will deploy. This is a very big safety issue! the 1st time my husband (who has worked as a mechanic for 15 years) took it to the dealer he was told we weren't the only one complaining but as soon as the seat softened up it would start to work. 10 months later it still isn't working. The second time we took it back they said there wasn't anything wrong with it. The service report says the switch is "fickle" but they don't call that a malfunction. How do I know the airbag will deploy if the light says it is turned off? they said we need to move around in the seat by bouncing on it, sitting back in the seat more, move the seat forward or backwards to find the right spot for the airbag to work. I shouldn't have to and it doesn't make a difference anyhow! the 3rd time was to a different dealer because the car became inoperable due to a major electronic problem and had to be towed. They had my car for almost 2 weeks and said they found some codes and replaced the switch. It still isn't working. I was going down interstate with my 160 lb son and an hour into the trip we noticed the airbag switch said airbag turned off. I had to pull over turn the car off, have him get out, turn the car back on, have him get back in, before the airbag would turn on. I was in the city for an appt. This week and before I left the hospital parking lot, the airbag switch turned to off. We had to shut the car off, and restart it. The switch would say airbag turned on, drive 15 feet, and now says off. Turn car off, get out, restart car, get in airbag on, drive 20 ft, airbag off. We do this 3 or 4 times before switch says airbag on and stays on. Can you put pressure on them to help us out?.

Passenger side air bag light does not go off every time a passenger is sitting in seat. Which will not let air bag deploy.
The "passenger airbag off" light remain lit even with an adult in the passenger seat. I have only owned the 2005 kia Sorento ex for 2 days and everytime a passenger is in the seat they must try to reposition themselves and then you turn off the ignition and restart the engine before light will go off. I have seen this issue posted on some kia discussion forums and so far dealers have no answer to the problem.
