Side/window Air Bag Problems of Kia Motor Sorento

The OCS (occupant classification sensor) has failed, resulting in the passenger side airbag failing in the "off" position. The cost to replace is in excess of $2,000. . . A price that will leave many owners without a functioning passenger side airbag. Kia has extended coverage for other failing airbag components (clock spring), it is odd they would leave their customers exposed by not covering this one.

"takata recall" I bought this car just recently and the drivers side air bag stays on all the time there have been recalls but not on my car is it safe to drive this like this or is it dangerous and the factory should send out a recall on this right !.

We have a kia Sorento 2016. The front passenger side light stays on that the passenger side air bags is off, when a person sits on the front passenger seat. I have a gel cushion on the passenger side seat when and a passenger sits in it. The dealer tested it and the light went off when the gel seat was removed and the seat sat on. My question is - why doesn't the air safety cushion work when the gel cushion on the passenger seat? is this a safety issue for a person sitting in the passenger seat? some people need to sit on cushions when in a car because of a possible disability.

The contact owns a 2005 kia Sorento. While operating the vehicle, the front passenger side air bag sensor illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the floor mat sensor was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 123,000.

The drivers side airbag deployed while backing up in a parking lot. I traveled approximately 6-10 feet turning left in reverse at maybe 1-2 mph if that much. The vehicle was not hit nor did it hit anything to cause this airbag to deploy and the horn to stay on. When airbag deployed, the steering wheel cover when forced open gashed left thumb. Auto insurance will not cover defects. Trying to work with Kia Motors to replace defective parts and make vehicle safe. Unknown at this time if they will fix. Other kia vehicles have had airbag problems from my research. Service manager at dealership said it was out of warranty, but my attorney said defects are not a warranty issue and my vehicle is within the product liability period.

Frontal collision at 55 mph, front air bags deployed, but instantaneous side impact from other vehicle resulted in significant impact to the passenger side, broken seat, right side injuries (ribs, back, punctured lung), and the side air bags did not open (failed to deploy) with this side impact. Vehicle was traveling north at 55 mph, and was struck by a westbound truck traveling 35 mpg.

My daughter was driving a 2003 kia sorrento and fell a sleep at the wheel after college exams. She drove into the rear of a tractor trailer tanker at approximately 40 mph. None of the air bags deployed as a result of the accident. She had a concussion and a cracked sternum. State farm insurance declared the car a total loss due to a bent frame, engine mount failure and a totaled front end. After contacting kia, their response to the accident was that the angle the car hit the trailer, was such that none of the sensors was compromised , there for the air bags did not deploy. Basically is was not their problem with their equipment of the car.

The side airbags on our 2004 kia Sorento did not deploy in a side impact with a utility (electric) pole. Car slid from road in a sudden hail storm and slid passenger side into the pole. Speed when control of car was lost, approx 45 mph. The impact broke the pole into 4 pieces and totaled the car. The impact was in the rear passenger side door, just infront of the right rear tire. The damage to the car went all the way to the frame.

The passenger side airbag sensor in my 2007 kia Sorento has failed intermittently ever since I purchased the vehicle in 2009. It fails at least 50% of the time when a passenger is in the seat (sometimes >200 lbs. ) upon complaining to the dealer, they continued to insist that the passenger was not sitting properly in the seat. This is ridiculous. I know of no other cars where that is an issue. The dealer says to get out and back in again, but that is not going to happen when you are on a busy highway going 65 mph and realize the airbag is not on. So, then they say to lift your butt up for 10 seconds and then sit back down. It sometimes works, but takes a few tries. And, do you know how embarrassing that is to ask a guest (particularly if a business guest) to do that? again, it is just so ridiculous that I fear owners will ignore it thus putting their passengers at risk. So, I was thrilled to see that there was finally a recall of the 2007 Sorento passenger airbag sensor in the fall of 2011. Finally, they admit there is a problem. However, then the dealer says that my VIN is not covered by the recall. Really??? this recall needs to be expanded. I am taking my car back again next week and if it is not replaced by kia, I will be calling the kia headquarters legal department to complain. If you can help get this recall expanded so that I and others do not have to go through this, I would greatly appreciate it.

While heading east during a snow storm, collided with a snow plow. The kia Sorento was totaled beyond repair. Impact was at drivers side door. Destroyed front of vehicle, rear door and ripper part of roof open, driver hit face on side window causing bleeding on brain. Was hospatized for 3 days. Not one air bag was deployed. Not front nor side air bags. Notified kia corp. Sent pictures and report. Said they didnt think it was the fault of kia.

Just purchased a brand new 2008 kia Sorento. The passenger side air bag only activates 50% of the time when a passenger is in the seat. Took vehicle to dealer and dealer could not replicate the problem. Returned vehicle to dealer a 2nd time with a passenger seated in the seat and the air bag was not activated. The service manager actually witnessed a 150lb passenger properly seated in the seat and the air bag was not activated. They kept the vehicle 5 additional days. They ran diagnostics and contacted kia. Kia would not authorize a repair since all the diagnostics passed even though the service manager personally witnessed it not working. The dealer states that kia refuses to acknowledge a known problem with the passenger seat air bag sensor.

2007 kia Sorento passenger side air bag indicates off with adult in front seat.

Air bag sensor light on passenger side of 07 kia rio was on after repairs from an accident. Took to kia of conyers for diagnosis. Almost a month later, my car is still at the dealership. It was determined that it was a warranty issue which I am reporting in case more people have this same problem. Safety is my main concern.

The contact owns a 2008 kia Sorento. While driving 35 mph, the contact experienced automatic transmission failure and took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer offered no assistance, so the contact took the vehicle to another dealer on January 21, 2008. Two mechanics test drove the vehicle and acknowledged the failure; however, they needed to order the codes to make the repair. As of February 22, 2008, the dealer has yet to call the contact to schedule the repair work. The dealer informed her that the vehicle had to get used to the way she drove and that there was no failure. The contact also stated that there was an issue with the passenger side air bag. The dealer informed her that she had to sit in the vehicle a certain way. The contact stated that no matter how she sits, the light remains illuminated. The powertrain was unknown. The current mileage was 4,020 and failure mileage was 100.

The passenger side airbag sensor malfunctions intermittently on my 2007 kia Sorento. There are times when a normal sized person is seated properly, but the airbag sensor indicates the airbag is not activated. Previously, if I restarted the car with the passenger seated the issue was corrected, but I have since encountered times when restarting the car does not fix the problem. I have brought my vehicle to two kia dealerships and contacted kia corporate, but was told that there was nothing they could do to help me.

The contact stated that there was a defect in the airbag manufacturing. He felt that airbags were supposed to be designed to deploy under these types of conditions.

: the contact stated while driving on a paved street at 35 mph, the drivers side-impact and both frontal air bags deployed. There were no indicator lights illuminated prior to the incident and the vehicle did not impact anything to cause the deployment. The vehicle was driven to the side of the road without incident. No injuries were sustained and seat belts were in use. The vehicle was towed to dealer. Upon inspection, the computer diagnostic test indicated the vehicle had been in a major collision. We had issues from the beginning with a fire in the center console of our pre-owned kia. Then we noticed the light for the passenger side air bags was intermittent on picking up whether there was a passenger in the seat. Our clock would go in and out on the lighting especially over bumps. Then we were rear ended on the highway. No air bags went off. The seat belt did not engage and hold either me or my husband back. Then when I fell back against the seat the seat did not stay in place and I fell backwards. I went to the hospital for muscle spasms. The vehicle is being repaired for the physical damage and then will be brought to the dealership.

The air bag sensor on the passenger side did not function when a someone sat in the seat. This could be unsafe if the vehicle were to be involved in an accident. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for about 15 times for repairs, but the problem recurred.
