Front Air Bag Problems of Kia Motor Sorento

2008 kia Sorento airbag deployment while the vehicle was parked. 38 y w/f sitting in driver's seat, vehicle not running and no one was around vehicle. Airbag deployed striking female on left side causing injury to abdomen, arm, shoulder and face. According to kia computer malfunction caused problem. Glad she was waiting on other son to leave church. Kia's solution is to replaced airbag system. Vehicle still under warranty. Events female sat in driver's seat. Consequences moderate injury, disoriented unable to remember which child was in the back seat she was talking to at the time. Official medical visit at urgent care the next morning. X-rays and cat scan. Severe consequences could have been death if it happened 5-10 minutes later going down road. What has been done? I have been informed kia does not deal with hypothetical situations. Family could have been just another number.

Front passenger airbag is DE-activated when the front seat is occupied by an adult. It should only DE-activate if it senses no passenger seated.

I have 2 complaints. 1) I have complained about the front passenger air bag not coming on when an adult is seated in it. I have taken it to 2 different kia shops 5 times since 1200 miles and was told it is operating normal. Normal is when an adult sits in it, not when you place a purse on the seat or whenever it decides to work. I am following the manual and still no satisfaction with repair. 2) at 1200 miles I also complained that the car would buck, stick in 3rd gear, and not shift till it red lines. This does not happen all the time and I was told by kia that unless the "check engine" light comes on they can not find the problem. Even after the #1 repair tech in the world for kia experienced the not shifting till it red lines for himself. I was told the only thing they could do is reprogram the computer. They have reprogrammed it 4 times the problem is still there. I have 22 repair invoices for this car since I purchased it. I am fighting on a daily basis with kia to repair this car. It is a shame to say but I feel someone is going to get hurt or worst killed before kia fixes these issues!.

I bought a used 2009 Sorento kia and when my wife was seated on the passenger seat the passenger air bag off sign was on. The light comes off/on randomly when a passenger is on the seat. I took the car to the mechanic and they could not find anything wrong, but the problem persists.

"passenger airbag off" light remains on when adult passengers over 108 lb sit in seat. No airbag failure light indicated. Had dealer rep inspect and do calibration to OCS in late Aug. However, the fault still happens about 1out of 10 times.

Intermittent display on dash "passenger air bag off'" while passenger is seated and belted into passenger seat. Several documented service appointments with dealer have failed to eliminate problem.

On 4/30/08 my kia Sorento was hit from behind on the interstate. We were pushed into the car ahead of us who also hit the car ahead of them. We were on an extended on ramp so I estimate our speed was 35 mph. As the traffic ahead of us began to stop quickly I applied my brakes, therefore the exact rate of speed at the time of impact is unknown. However we hit car enough that my daughters lid covered soft drink hit the dash. Neither of my cars front air bags deployed. My car sustained major rear and front and driver side damage. The car was totaled. Our seat belts did hold us in. However I received bruising from the seat belt in the check and waist area as weak as an injury to my right knee where it hit the lower dash area.

When driving vehicle the passengers airbag remains in the off position when my wife is seated as a passenger, but when I ride as passenger the air bag is on. (some time it works and others it does not).

The 2005 kia Sorento added a front passenger weight detection system to automatically arm or disarm the front passenger air bag for lighter weight individuals. This detector and/or related equipment operates irradically and ineffectively, leaving the users regularly uncertain regarding the status of the air bag system. This is a systemic problem known to kia but no schedule exists for a fix.

The vehicle was involved in an accident, and none of the air bags deployed.

1. (11/03/03 1st incident) "air bag" system light came on. Vehicle was taken to jeffery kia for repair. I was called to pickup vehicle two days later. (unaware at the time that the air bag system had been disabled) week later received call that air bag was in and to return vehicle for air bag replacement. Repair completed and vehicle returned next day. 2. ) (2nd incident) on vacation in starke, fa. , December 24, 2003 "air bag" system light came on. Told to return to dealer (kia hotline) drove 16 hours 12/25/03 to get vehicle to jeffery kia and delivered to dealer 12/26/03. I am disturbed that vehicle was initially returned to me in unsafe condition and unsatisfactorily repaired and placed my grand children in jeopardy.
