1 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2007 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 10/25/2020

I was driving on the highway when my steering wheel became really stiff like I lost power steering. I looked at my dash and had a check engine light, oil light, abs light, and esc off light illuminated. I pressed the gas to try to switch lanes as I was in the far left lane and needed to reach the shoulder to figure out what was going on, and the car would not accelerate. I turned my flashers on and was luckily able to make it to the shoulder without causing an accident. When I was on the shoulder I turned the key off and then back on. The check engine light and oil light went away, but the abs light and the esc light remained on. I started to drive back towards my house and felt the car idling roughly when at a stop. At home my husband disconnected the battery for a few minutes which solved the rough idling issue but the abs and esc lights are still on. I am now scared to drive my daughter to school and have the car shit off again. I have read similar reviews about this vehicle. Something needs to be done by kia to solve this. They recalled some vehicles for this issue but mine is not listed and clearly needs to be!.

2 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2017 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 02/03/2020

I lost power steering three times. The power steering light went on each time. On two of the occasions the vehicle was towed to the local dealer. It was towed to modesto kia and paso robles kia, both in California. In modesto , 1/18, I was told it was a dirty battery cable that the car had reset itself and there were no more problems with the power steering. Nine days later on 1/27, it went out again in cambria, CA. This time I was driving but was able to move to a safe place. The kia dealership in paso robles said when the car arrived the light was off and there were no issues with the power steering. I was told they would put miles on the car in an effort to recreate the problem. That afternoon as it was set to be driven by the technician the light went on and power steering was lost. I was told the technician saw a problem in the fuse box, he fixed it and the car was able to be driven. I was told there was nothing else they could do. The service manager was rude and unsympathetic. My concerns were not validated or acknowledged, needless to say, I very upset because I was afraid to drive the car. Especially, given the fact that what they said they did to fix the problem did not make any sense to me. I know there is a problem with the vehicle and further investigation by both dealers may have discovered it but they went with the first thing they found. There are other complaints for the same reason. I truly felt unsafe. Driving the vehicle and because of that, I felt I had no other choice but to purchase another vehicle. The Sorento is unsafe and someone is going to get hurt. I pray you will investigate this issue and with this car specifically. I also have a kia customer care case no; 13527008.

Failure Date: 09/23/2019

Alternator fails car battery goes dead causing you to have a hard time steering and unable to shift gears roll down windows or use safety flashers because you have no power! we had been on the expressway going 70 and were so lucky to have just pulled into our bank when failure occurred!! a few minutes earlier and my wife who was driving would of crashed because of lost of power steering going out and weak shoulder strength from shoulder surgery. The car is 23 days over 5 years and had 43757 miles at5 time of failure. This vehicle needs to be recalled because the alternator failure is a safety hazard because I believe the alternator is underpowered for all it is asked to do much in the way of the 2000-2007 kia spectra which is a recalled vehicle>.

4 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/18/2019

During normal vehicle operation, both on the highway and city streets, the vehicle would suddenly lose power steering and the power steering warning light will illuminate. This happened several times randomly without warning, steering was normal and there were no audible noises when steering prior to power steering failure. Putting the vehicle in park, turning off and restarting the car fixed the problem a few times, sometimes for a few days between occurences. Eventually power steering was lost for good and needed to be taken to a mechanic for repairs. There were a few close calls losing power steering in the middle of turns that nearly led to accidents.

7 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/10/2017

1st occurrence: on July 10, 2017, at about 11:30 a. M. , I made a left turn on a city street in las cruces, nm, which took me through an underpass. It was a 'wide' turn and I was probably moving at about 25 mph. About half way through the turn I lost power steering and by brute force, was able to turn my car and avoid the wall of the underpass. Had there been another car to my right, I would most likely have hit it on the driver side. I brought my Sorento to a stop and was able to restart the engine. I am unsure which came first, the loss of power steering or the engine stopping. Later that day, I took the car to the local kia service facility where no problem(s) could be found. I was the sole occupant of my Sorento at the time of this first incident. 2nd occurrence: on July 27, 2017, at about 2:00 p. M. , I made a right turn on a city street in las cruces, nm. Immediately after completing the turn and just beginning to move straight ahead at about 30 mph, I once again lost my power steering. Fortunately there were no other cars in close proximity and I was able to coast into a parking lot, once again using brute force to steer. The engine was not running when I brough my Sorento to a stop, but I was able to restart and drove directly to the same kia service facility. No problems could be found this time either. Though I am not 100 percent certain, I believe the loss of engine power preceded the loss of power steering. My wife was with me when this incident occurred.

8 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/15/2015

Crankshaft bolt backed out lost power steering brakes, kia is aware of this problem from 2002 to 2009 many reports have been filed, its the manufacturing of the bolt which is to small, they are not standing by this defect, there is no permenant fix for this and kia isn't warning anyone of this problem which could lead into a fatile accident with injuries and death. Going at a high rate of speed there would be no control even at slow there is no easy turning the wheel. Now im stuck with this problem and a temp fix wont fix it,so now I have no vehicle or anyway to get one,no way to work,no money to temp fix it,this is unjust and this vehicle should have never passed specs to be on the road. Kia should step up and honor there products, they are deceiving buyers and putting there life in danger and u don't know it till it happens,I didn't. . . I was taking my daughter to school I am thankful I wasn't on the highway possible resulting in my familys life or someone else on the road, with no control all because of there negligence not caring for peoples lifes but for money, its sad . If u pull up crankshaft bolt for kia it will show you all the complaints and problems and this is a manufacturing problem and a dangerous defect, because you lose control of handiling of your vehicle.

9 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/27/2014

For the third time in a 2 month span, my 2012 kia Sorento has completely shut down as we have been driving it. We are at the 60k miles mark. This is very dangerous. Two of the three times we have been doing around 40 mph on very busy streets and thank god, we did not hit another car or get hit. The vehicle with zero warning, will just die and we will lose all power steering, we can't shift gears, and the brakes do not work like they normally do. The first time I thought it was just a battery, so I replaced it. But since then we have had it at the dealership twice and they do not know what is wrong with it. They will get it running again and then a couple of weeks later, it will die again. I have two babies that ride in this vehicle and I am looking at my options to getting rid of it. This vehicle is very dangerous!!.

10 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/21/2013

Driving down road and heard noise and felt like it was loosing power. Pulled over to park the car. Lost power steering and went up a shopping store curb. Lucky that no one was walking or standing there. (pulley, broken bolt from crank and dial pin from crank).

11 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2005 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/12/2013

Was driving down road with my son when my car started to vibrate and make a horrible noise. The warning lights on the dash turned on and I lost my power steering just as I was turning onto our street. I had the vehicle towed to an auto shop and before they looked at it, the owner told me that it was the crank pulley bolt that sheered off. He said its common in kia SUV's of that time period! I was lucky to be on a side street and not a highway going faster because there was no warning to this happening and I could've easily lost control. This defect will eventually cause someone to lose control and become injured or killed.

12 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/23/2012

I was merging onto a highway when all of a sudden I heard a loud thud and my battery light & e brake light came on and I lost power steering. I was able to drive the vehicle to a local mechanic who informed me that the harmonic balancer had fallen off due to the crankshaft bolt sheering off. Once it was fixed by an ase certified mechanic, approximately 8000 miles later I was driving to work and the car started shaking like I was driving on rumble strips. I took it back to a service garage and after replacing the harmonic balancer and crankbolt again they came to the conclusion that the crankshaft was bent. The garage suggested replacing the entire crankshaft and balancer and then having the engine rebalanced or a complete engine replacement both of which are greater than $3500 to repair on a vehicle that's worth about $5500. . It's been approximately $2000 that I've already spent to correct this problem and the problem still exists. It's at a local kia dealership now, where I purchased the vehicle and they told me that it's not fixable and they can only recommend to replace the engine which would cost $6,700 for a used engine with 71,000 miles on it. It seems that this same issue happens on these motors between 60k and 90k miles then from doing some research, it seems after repairs are done the same problem happens approximately 6k-10k miles later. After looking into it, it leads me to believe that the only cause of this problem would be manufacturer defects and faulty parts. This has caused me to be out of a vehicle since mid November of 2012. It's disturbing with how many other complaints I'm reading on this site about the same exact thing!.

13 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/12/2012

In this instance, the car failed to start. However, there were several more incidents concerning the same issues. In those instances, the car would suddenly lose power, stall out and if able to be restarted, could be driven with a lag in the engine a short distance before all the dash lights would turn on and the car would lose power steering. In two instances, the power steering was suddenly lost when making a left turn with a break across oncoming traffic.

15 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 11/16/2009

I have a 2003 kia Sorento. As I left the garage at my office around 6 p. M. Monday 11/16, the car began making a horrible squealing noise. It immediately lost power steering, several warning lights came on, and it felt like the parking brake was on (it wasn't). I managed to get out of the garage to a space on the street. I turned the car off. When I tried to start it again, it wouldn't start. I had it towed to a service station, which said the car had thrown its drive belts and that it needed a new crankshaft balancer pulley, crankshaft sprocket, crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley washer to fix the underlying cause. I called kia customer service to see if there was a recall related to those parts. There was a recall in 2007 and my car was serviced at that time as ordered by kia. Kia said Tuesday that they would only consider paying for needed repairs if I had the car towed to a kia dealership. I had it towed to king kia in gaithersburg, MD. , at my expense. The service writer, wayne johnson, told me that the garage that had put my new timing belt on had left a bolt loose. He told me his mechanic put the three drive belts back on. He told me I needed a new battery (though the current battery was only 2 years old) because the current one wasn't holding a charge. I told him to put one on. He told me the car was running fine and ready to go. I assumed -- it now turns out, wrongly -- that the kia mechanic had tightened whatever bolt he found loose. I picked up the car Wednesday night and drove it straight home. When I started it yesterday morning to leave for work, I drove it about 1. 5 blocks and the steering locked up, the brake and battery warning lights came on, and it felt like the parking brake was on. This time the engine kept running. I brought it back home and called the kia garage back. Wayne now admits the mechanic never looked for an underlying cause. He simply put the old drive belts on and a new battery in. Today he says it needs a new crank pulley.
