2 Steering Column problem of the 2017 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 01/20/2021

While the vehicle is in motion a red warning light appears in the shape of a steering wheel and the steering becomes very stiff. This happens intermittently after putting it to gear and driving forward or backing out and it has also happened while highway driving. Luckily these incidents have happened while driving straight and occurs for a short duration. It is concerning from a safety standpoint. I brought it in to a kia dealership and it has something to do with the electronics in the steering column. They have no recall listed and it is very expensive to replace outside the 50k basic mileage warranty which ours is since we tend to put a lot of highway miles on our vehicle. It isn't too much over though and we take very good care of it. I would find it very hard to believe it that is caused from wear and tear but more likely to be a manufacturer defect.

3 Steering Column problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

Steering sticks while driving. There is a tight spot in the steering that makes driving in a straight line difficult. The vehicle requires constant correction to continue driving in a straight line. This is not only unsafe it is exhausting to drive. The issue also causes premature tire wear. A set of 80000 mile michelin tires was worn out in under 20000 miles. This started at about 50000 miles in our vehicle, but was not diagnosed until today,75000 miles. Prior to the warranty expiring the dealer said they did not notice the problem. Today the dealer says steering column is defective. Kia forums are full of drivers with this same issue starting as early as 30000 miles.

4 Steering Column problem of the 2017 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 04/25/2020

I purchased I used 2017 kia Sorento fwd in September of 2019. The vehicle is great except the more I drove it, the more I noticed the steering was very sensitive. It has a stick just at the top as well. I feel that this can cause a safety issue especially when taking curves as the need to constantly adjust feels necessary or could cause on over correction while driving. The more research I did, I have found many people to have this same issue with no recall. It is an electronic problem in the steering column. I feel that kia needs to address this issue. The problem with just having the steering column replaced is that it's going to be the same part. The need to design a new one for safety reasons.

6 Steering Column problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/09/2020

My steering column is off center which makes my car or tires shake unless I go a certain speed. My rear view camera never works, screen goes black, but outline shows. The electrical issues with my headlights, rear, brake and reverse lights are always going out. I have to replace them constantly. I hate going to the carwash because I fear that my lights will go out and I will have to replace the bulbs again & again.

7 Steering Column problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/18/2019

I noticed around 48,000 miles that after driving for 30+ minutes or on and off driving for 45+ minutes, my steering becomes "sticky"/"notched" when it is centered and I am driving 35 mph or more. It becomes much more pronounced when on a flat, straight surface and I am driving 60+ mph. This makes minor corrections hard to do when driving to stay in my lane as the vehicle seems to require significant pressure to turn right or left. This ends up becoming a series of constant corrections from inadvertently oversteering. This is very fatigue inducing and can be frustrating, even when I am very well rested and alert. I'm concerned it'll affect other drivers as they may drive erratically when passing as they match my steering corrections. My local kia dealership has been very helpful and receieved permission to remedy it under warranty and will replace the entire steering column and associated parts. Currently the steering column is on backorder and has been for at least three weeks. I believe the steering column issue may be bigger than indicated via reports judging by the backorder issue. Date entered in the "event date" section is based on when I had an appointment for an initial diagnosis.

Had a problem with my ignition switch, steering column not unlocking on my 2013 kia sorrento. Put the key in, would not turn. Finally, I jerked on the steering wheel back and forth, it finally turned. Then, my sisters 2013 kia-optima did the same thing about a week ago! I called the dealer and was told that because the wheels were turn that this would cause this to happen. I informed him that in both cases, the vehicles were in the garage, on flat service, wheels pointing straight. Was told if it happens again, bring it in.
