1 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 10/13/2019

I bought my 04 Sorento from my aunt who was the only owner. It had a power steering issue at that time which took several attenpts to fix. About a month later we we visiting family and had to turn around. Upon stopping we noticed smoke from the engine compartment so I grabbed my 4 y/o daughter out of the car and by boyfriend opened the hood to find a small fire on opposite side fro where battery is. Once fire was put out we drove . 5 miles on a city rd to family. The power steering was gone at that time as well. 10/13/19 - the directional worked all day and come night time when I came out from the store and started vehicle they did not work. The next day they worked finehowever, on 10/14/19 - I started the car in am and there was a squeaky belt. I hit the gas pedal quickly and noise went away. Then while driving, the battery and brake indicator lights came on the dash and stayed on so I pulled over and shut car off. Iwas driving my daughter to the park a mile away from home when the battery and brake indicator lights came on again. I turned car off for a few minutes and when I restarted it the lights were off. I went to turn around to go home and the steering completely failed so it was extremely difficult and dangerous. I have not driven it or started it since. My mechanic camt to my home 2 days in a row and was convinced it was crankshaft bolt that snapped. He got it into his shop the following week on Friday 10/26/19 and called a short while later informing me that it was in fact the crankshaft bolt that snapped deep in the shaft and the crankshaft would need to be replaced for a cost of around $3000. I called a few other places and they said the engine would need replacing which would coat around the same. My daughter and I now have no vehicle and are walking her to school which will be difficult come winter months.

3 Steering Failed problem of the 2017 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Lx model awd. Purchased at 21k miles, currently has 33k miles. Steering can be described as "sticky" with micro steering wheel adjustments needed to keep the car tracking straight. As the wheel is turned left or right there is a delay and small lag or bumping felt until the actual steering adjustment is transferred to the cars wheels. This occurs and is more pronounced at higher speeds. It is noticeable and concerning when trying to hold the car straight on a long stretch of highway. My concern from a safety point, is that the steering mechanisms will fail or freeze up. Besides the fact that driving the car is annoying to operate like this and causes fatigue, there is definitely something not right as I have read from many forums online. I love everything about else about the kia Sorento, but this steering issue very concerning. Have already rules out tires, alignment etc. The feeling in the steering wheel is pronounced and not something I have ever felt in any car I have ever driven in 45 years.

4 Steering Failed problem of the 2016 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/09/2017

Traction control - our vehicle has sustained two incidents involving the traction control system. The first incident involved the traction control light on the dash illuminated intermittently while the vehicle was moving. The vehicle was turned off then back on the light would go off. The dealership evaluated the problem but could not duplicate the incident. Several months later, the vehicle was in motion at approximately 25-30 mph, in a residential neighborhood, in a moderate right hand turn, and the traction light came on during the turn. The vehicle became uncontrollable when the vehicle steered towards the right and forced us to strike a curb causing steering and wheel damage. The vehicle was take again to the dealership and the manufacturer was contacted. We were told the steering sensor had failed but they could not determine whether this occurred as a result of the collision or if it failed and caused the collision. The vehicle has been at the kia dealership for seven days, the engineering department responded to attempt to duplicate the problem and download data from the vehicle's computer but we have not heard the status as of the 8th day. We are concerned for obvious reasons and feel there's an issue affecting the traction control system which affects the steering. Now that a collision has resulted in the failure of the system, it has been very difficult to gather information from kia and feel there may be other incidents that have been overlooked as simple collisions. No documentation has been provided by the dealership relative to either incident at this time.

Failure Date: 02/18/2015

The temperature was minus 3 degrees fahrenheit and the paved road was dry. The vehicle was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green I crossed the intersection and was going about 25 to 30 miles an hour when I completely lost control of the steering. The vehicle veered to the right quickly. I was in the right hand lane of two lanes. I could not hold the steering wheel to keep the vehicle from turning. I used the brake and was able to stop the vehicle before it went over a curb where I would have hit a light pole. The vehicle could not be driven, so it was towed to the kia dealership. The tires were fine. The serpentine built was fine. The power steering fluid was not low. Kia service technicians reported that the steering rack failed and caused damage to the steering pump.
