5 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 11/02/2020

When turning my wheel at low speeds my steering clunks in the column and feels like it is going to come apart. I am scared I am going to loose stearing control. This happens all the time at low speeds or while in a parking lot. It started a month ago and is getting worse. I saw a recall on this but my car is not affe ted and should be.

6 Steering Column problem of the 2020 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 07/01/2020

When parked (but with the power set to "run" or the engine fully on), if you turn the steering wheel in either direction, typically to its fullest extent, there is a loud "clunk" or "clank" noise coming from the base of the steering column. After taking the car to the dealership, they only told me the steering was "broke" and they had to replace the entire steering system under warranty. The issue started around 2300 miles. I have taken several videos since the issue began. The car has to be stationary or in motion (forward or reverse) but under 5mph (roughly). After watching a few youtube videos and doing some further investigation, it appears as though part of the problem is a defective/damaged "coupling gear" between the power/electric assist steering motore and the steering column itself. Regardless, it is a severe steering issue that has lead to a previous recall in older kias and several accidents.

9 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Steering has developed 3 inch play, loose nut inside the steering column from research on the internet.

10 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

I own a 2012 kia Soul + with 39,000 miles on it. I recently heard a clunking in the steering column when the wheel is turned from left to right while stationary and while driving. Research shows it to be the steering coupler. There has been a recall on this coupler in other kia models but not the 2012 kia Soul. The dangers of loosing steering because of this coupler are the same no matter what vehicle you are driving I therefore cannot understand why there is not a recall for the 2012 kia Soul as well as any models with this same coupler. Seems to me kia is getting off the hook for this model year and it doesn't seem right to me. Please look into this and I hope you will see that the dangers involving the failure of this part is safety matter that deserves a recall for the 2012 model as it has for other models with the same coupler.

11 Steering Column problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 12/11/2019

I took my 2015 kia Soul to miami lakes kia twice in December 2019, to check a clicking noise when turning both left and right, more consistently when turning right. I'm not sure but I have an inkling that this noise may be related to a problem with the steering column, cv joints or the axle. When I picked up my car the 1st time, as I made a right turn, I heard the same clicking noise. I called service and let them know that I still heard the noise. I returned my car a week later and took a test ride with two technicians, one technician informed me that the the noise needed to be louder for them to repair it. His claim seems unreasonable, especially since everyone who rides in my car hears the clicking noise, and there is obviously a mechanical issue with the car's steering or something related. I had my car checked at tires plus, the clicking noise was duplicated on the test drive and the mechanic informed me that this is a recall issue and to take my car to the dealer. Also, on February 21, 2020, the car battery that I purchased on July 31, 2018, died. This battery did not last 18 months (36 month warranty).

12 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 03/16/2019

Arrythmical clicking/grinding sound from steering column at slower speeds and while stopped when steering wheel turned left or right. Seems to be a common problem with the kia Soul yet only 2014 through 2015 models were affected by a recall?.

13 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 03/10/2019

While driving or stationary, I noticed a clicking sound in my steering wheel when moving it from side to side. I googled this and saw multiple complaints about this issue; however the recalls were not for the 2013 kia Soul's. I called kia customer service @ 1-800-333-4542 and they said that I would have to take it to the dealer have it diagnosed @ $143. 00 but cannot guarantee they would pay for the repair. I called the kia dealership in delray beach, FL and was told that the kia optima was recalled for this issue, but they have been getting more and more kia Souls coming in with this same problem. The cost for repair would be $400. 00 +. I should not be held responsible for this since kia is aware this part is of poor design and fails prematurely. Kia should be recalling all models since this is a safety concern and all models have the same defective mdps coupler in the steering column. I feel that anyone driving a kia is at risk.

14 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 03/04/2019

Have started noticing a clicking sound from the steering column when I turn, this happens while stationary or in motion, this could become a major safety issue. I have read on line that kia is aware and covers 2014 and 2015 but not 2013 year this seems totally unfair.

15 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Soul. While driving approximately 2 mph, the steering wheel made a clunking sound. The vehicle was taken to aloha kia (94-169 farrington hwy, waiphau, hawaii 96819) where it was diagnosed that the steering column failed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

16 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 02/12/2019

When you turn on the car the steering wheel has this click click to each side and as you're driving down the road and you move the steering wheel a click sound is heard when moving steering wheel to the right and the left. The steering wheel makes this sound while you're sitting in the driveway in the carson park where the year actually driving down the road anytime you turn the wheel just a little right to the left it sounds like and feels like the steering wheel connection is going to break I'm not a car person but it's like when the steering column goes down and it will connect to shea a u joint and you turn the turn it one way or the other and do you join us not connecting properly that's the way I can describe it. I have no documents just a sound. This happens every time you turn the wheel right or left not a lot just a little bit it would be like in the play in a steering wheel but there should be no clicks.

17 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

I have a 2012 kia Soul that has 75,000 miles on it and has started making the highly complained about clunking noise and shifting/loose sensation in the upper steering column when turning wheel back and forth from left to right whether stationary or driving. It has also for some time been experiencing the shaking steering wheel at around 80 mph that has complaints. I am a former mechanic and through reading all the similar complaints and seeing symptom/repair videos I have diagnosed my clunking steering column to be caused by a failed steering coupler. This is a problem that has been recalled by kia on other vehicles but not on 2012 Soul. This steering coupler issue should have kia recalling all vehicles that have reports of this failure. I am loosing faith in Kia Motors. I should not have to replace this part on my time/money.

18 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 12/21/2018

Steering column coupler to mdps is of poor design and fails prematurely. Kia has recalled the same part in the optimas in the same years and future models have been affected as well. If not replaced the steering column can completely disconnect from the steering wheel and result in a complete loss of control. This has not directly happened if the parts are replaced due to the other symptoms of knocking or clicking but is a significant design flaw for using inferior plastics in critical component of driving control. 19 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 12/07/2018

Steering wheel has developed significant "play" in being able to move 1-2 inches either way with an audible clunk when it reaches the point of actually engaging the steering mechanism. . Read more...

20 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 11/28/2018

Steering suddenly became loose with a "click" on either side of play. Was told by kia dealer that the steering column had to be replaced at a cost of $1843. If I didn't fix it, my steering might go out at any time. Kia covered the same problem with recalls on later models but refused to cover this because of vehicle age, even though it's not a mileage or age issue, it's a dangerous design flaw. I've found dozens of identical complaints online.

21 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 11/17/2018

The steering wheel is super loose and the car will veer right on its own. We took it in for an alignment ($80) and they said they have to go into steering column and diagnose and fix. They said most the parts were cheap, however the job is timely and tedious, therefore the anticipate it costing approximately $500 plus the $80 alignment. . . . So almost $600! all of this right at christmas time, and even worse, only two months after hurricane charlie demolished our home in panama city beach, FL and surrounding areas. The mechanic told us we were lucky the steering hasn't stopped working completely and warned us to not drive it because it would stopped working at some point and we could be in major accident.

22 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Was going down ten, kia can't determine if my power steering want bout while going down the highway going 55, and then hitting a deer. The body work has been fixed but my vehicle has no power steering. Power steering is not responding - mdps will not communicate with vehicle. Failure in electronic mdps at top of steering column. They checked all connectors, and no physical damage to column itself. Found c1503 -esc/ecs (esp) error and c1687 - time out vsm2 (mdps) failure. Diagnosis says I need a power steering column and motor assembly. Geico refuses to cover this saying it's a common electrical power steering issue with kia's. If these are messing up electronically while driving this year for 2012 should be recalled. It feels as if insurance has found a loophole to not cover kia Souls with power steering. I also saw a corrosion issue recall and my car was from ohio which I lived there years with it before moving to virginia. No one at the newport news virginia kia even mentioned the recall for my VIN #, I found it while registering my kia online.

Failure Date: 09/02/2018

I have a 2012 kia Soul+ that has 80,000 miles on it and has started making the highly complained about clunking noise and shifting/loose sensation in the upper steering column when turning wheel back and forth from left to right whether stationary or driving. I am interested to find out if this coupler is also behind my shaking steering wheel at higher speeds. Shaking is not due to tires, wheels, or alignment/parts problems as problem was same before I just put new tires on and had balance/alignment done. Also was no different between several tire rotations of old tires. This steering coupler issue should have kia recalling all vehicles that have reports of this failure. I am loosing faith in Kia Motors. I should not have to replace this part on my time/money.

28 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 04/04/2018

My vehicle started making a clunking/clicking sound from the steering column area when turning the steering wheel right or left. The noise/sound quickly started getting louder in a short amount of time/mileage. The steering also started getting looser as the sound increased. This occurred both while setting still or while in motion. The repair shop had to replace a faulty steering coupler (56315-2kooofff) for about $225. 00. After the replacement the sound/noise and looseness are gone.

29 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

I suddenly started hearing a knocking sound coming from my steering column. I noticed it when I would make u-turns and when parking into a parking lane. After a day or two, the knocking began to be more frequent. I can be driving down the highway or stationary and the knocking will occur with a slight turn of the steering wheel also causing by wheel to be very loose. I dropped my vehicle off at the local kia dealership service department and they recommended the steering coupler be replaced. I declined services at that time and took my vehicle to another kia dealership. All I did was pull into the service department lane and spoke to a service department employee explaining what issues I am having with my steering and he immediately said " I don't even have to look at your car I know what the problem is; it is the steering coupler, we see this all the time but kia will not recall the Soul model for this issue. " I then went home and researched kia vehicles to find the optima vehicles had the same issue and were recalled. I then called the customer service 1-800 -333-4542 and submitted a complaint stating I do not feel safe driving and asked why this issue has not been recalled on Souls as I see many complaints online about this issue and other kia models have been recalled for the same problem. My information was taken and I am expecting a call within the next couple of days from the department parts and service manager as the warranty expired after 60,000 miles and I currently 66,815 miles. I believe kia should be held responsible for this issue since they are aware of this ongoing problem with their product!.

32 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Soul

Failure Date: 02/09/2018

Hello I have a 2013 kia Soul with only 56,000 miles on it. Last year around February my cars steering column started having this awful rattling and knocking sound coming from it. I can't drive over 55mph or it gets really bad and loud. This also causes my blinkers not to work properly on and off. I had surgery around the same time it started and I'm just getting back to being able to drive. Except I'm afraid that the steering is going to break and cause a big wreck and no this isn't a wheel balance issue. Has anyone else had this problem that you know of? I'm going to call the dealer today and get it in to be checked. I can't even get on the interstate because of the fear of it breaking and the extremely loud noises is causes.

33 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Soul
