Steering Problems of Kia Motor Soul - part 2

No warning indicators but my steering couple has worn and my steering now has play. Many forums says this is a know problem for kia and they should cover but I do not see a recall.

There is a known issue with the mdps flexible coupling effecting a large number of kias but kia apparently hasn't included all cars manufactured during this period of time.

I'm already aware of the recalls on alot of vehicles including my 2013 kia Soul and am aware of a judges ruling on this. How can kia Soul play god with peoples lives? I already filed a claim but still not not getting any help until the end of April. I'm a single 63 year old woman who is at risk of getting hurt not to mention other people/and or other people close to my vehicle. This is just beyond wrong. I saved for 2 years to get a more dependable vehicles and now have to worry about an explosion. I already filed a claim but I'm scared. The radio has been funky since I got it last year. It's a used vehicle buy to me it looked new to me. I love it bur now afraid to even get in it but really don't have a choice since I'm 63 yrs and don't have anyone else to get help or have another vehicle to use. I depend solely on myself. I need help with getting another vehicle until all of this mess is taken care of. I have gas gauge issues, revinng up randomly, caution light staying on now and yesterday I had smoke coming out under the dash and then it just stopped while I was trying to pull off and call for help but it stopped so I came back home. The oil was changed right after I got it last year and I put new tires on it with the money I got from a junk yard in johnson city that came to get my 98 Ford escort that my church family helped for me after a very traumatic accident that killed my little senior rescue pommy, totaled my vehicle and I spent several days in icu. I live on a very strict monthly income and this has caused more anxiety and panic issues that I can't even get under control with breathing exercises, journaling and taking my fur baby for walks and am back on my regular meds. While driving on the freeway, last month mid to late Feb, my steering wheel started spinning in one direction,. The control arm on the right side of the vehicle came off of the car's right front wheel and I skidded to the side of the road at approximately 65 to 70 miles per hour. Fortunately, there was not an accident. The control arms were replaced and there were no further incidents. Regardless, given the multiple engine recalls and problems with the kia Soul 2019 2. 0 plus, I have no confidence in it's integrity to the safety standards set. This is not only related to the car, but mostly due to the behavior of the company in its continued efforts to otherwise resist compliance with engine replacement after my mechanic both viewed rod bearings seeing they may impose some risk. (see previous complaint).

The contact owns a 2016 kia Soul. The contact stated that the battery had been replaced under recall NHTSA campaign number: 23v218000 (electrical system) and the vehicle started experiencing steering failure after the recall repair. The contact stated while driving 10-15 mph, especially over uneven road surfaces, there was an abnormal sound like metal banging together coming from all four wheels. The contact stated that the sound was more pronounced near the front wheels. While driving approximately 35-45 mph and attempting to turn the vehicle to the left or the right, there was a delay between the steering wheel turning and the wheels responding. The contact stated that there was a clanking sound coming from the steering wheel while turned to the left or the right. The contact stated that the steering wheel was loose and there was play in the steering wheel. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 66,100.

My husband rick and I own a 2018 kia Soul, 102,000 miles, and in February, my daughter was driving to school and the front end of the car became shaking violently. It was so dangerous that my husband would not let my daughter drive it, as it was easy to lose control of the car. We took the car in to the kia dealership to be diagnosed. The steering shaft needed to be replaced, a total cost of $941. 53, paid 2/19/24. After talking with mechanics and researching this part, it was clear that this part should last the lifetime of the car; in fact, I spoke with a mechanic who said they have never seen this issue, let alone in a 6 year old car. I continued searching online and saw that this was a problem in older models of kia Souls, and there were recalls on the 2012- 2016 models for the same issue we experienced. So I called kia to see if there was a recall on the 2018 model. They said no and that since there was not an extended warranty on the car, they would not reimburse or pay for the repair. I sent a message stating my position of outrage, that this repair is unacceptable since the part should last the lifetime of the car, and that obviously there was faulty manufacturing of the part. This posed a danger to my daughter, who is a college student, and kia should be responsible for the repair. Kia sent my complaint to the escalation department for review, where I have been communicating with kayla from the customer care unit. I have been corresponding and waiting for a decision for reimbursement since February, and today I was told that my request was denied. My case number is #16160663.

Steering coupler failure causes excessive vibration and notchiness in the steering. Kia informs me that this was covered by an extended warranty which expired in January 2023. I believe this to be a serious safety risk and this vehicle should be recalled by kia to replace this part at no cost to the consumers.

Certainly. I own a 2016 kia Soul, and recently I've become aware of some serious issues with the vehicle that are deeply concerning. It has come to my attention that the car is experiencing piston damage, which could potentially result in engine stalling, thereby significantly increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, there is a possibility that a broken connecting rod may puncture the engine block, leading to the escape of engine oil. This could not only cause significant damage to the engine but also poses a serious safety hazard. In the worst-case scenario, the leaking oil may come into contact with the hot exhaust system, significantly increasing the risk of a my 2016 kia Soul has been causing me a lot of trouble. Every 5-6 months, it needs a tune-up, and it frequently starts making loud noises from the engine. The car also has a concerning habit of skipping, and at times, it won't go faster than 20 miles an hour. This unreliable performance has put me in dangerous situations, including being side-swiped due to the vehicle randomly cutting off while driving. In an effort to get to the bottom of these issues, I had a diagnostic test run on the car, and the results were troubling. The codes that came up include p1326 for the glow relay stuck on the power train system, as well as anti-lock codes what is particularly distressing about this situation is that despite the severity of these potential risks, kia of pendleton has refused to address the issue and rectify the problems with my vehicle. This lack of action is extremely worrying, especially given that I regularly travel with my two kids in the car. The safety of my family is paramount, and the fact that we have almost been involved in crashes twice due to these issues is deeply troubling. I am reaching out for assistance and resolution in this matter. The safety of my vehicle and the well-being of my family are at stake, and I urgently need a response and a plan to address these serious safety concerns.

I recieved notice in the mail that there are recalls on my car prior to recieving the notice I had recently got an oil change and I was informed that there is a little leaking and in recall number 20v750 the car can possible catch on fire so I waited for my appointment with the dealer it was inspected and they did not fix leak I had paperwork however I dont know what this shit means what I do know is when I got my car back I was not operating correctly and the check engine light is on and it was not on when I dropped my car off to them I have made at least 5 phone calls reachng out to the dealerand I have not talked to anyone.

I looked it up. It's called the steering coupler. The manufacturer is aware of the problem but I was never notified about it before the warranty ran out August 2023. Now it affects the steering. Here is a service notice that I found online if that helps: TSB 10159268. Thank you.

Steering coupler needs replaced per dealership. Vehicle has 72,000 miles only. No recall notice received. One owner. I feel they could replace an expensive item less than $550. Goodwill.

My steering coupler is bad.

My mdps steering wheel coupler has completely failed. I never recieved a letter from kia and only found out they had a warranty extension through searching the web to see what the horrible noise and play in my steering wheel was. I dont qualify for this extension by 9 months. I purchased my car 1/2013 and that puts me past the 10 year mark. I see kia has extended this warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles on the newer cars with the same mileage, is there a chance they will do it with the Souls or have they and maybe I am missing it.

I’ve had the steering slip several times and recently the steering coupler went out causing loose, bumpy steering and a popping sound when turning.

First off I do not use my lane keep assist. When traveling at any speed on a long curves of 100 to 150 ft or longer or sitting in a parking lot with the steering wheel angled between 15 to 30 degrees either left or right of center for 15 to 30 seconds the system will (in a sense) fall asleep. On the long corners this causes a dangerous situation for the driver and others because with the system falls asleep it will continue tracking the same course without recentering unless forced to re-engage. In other words it will not come out of the curve without forceful input from the driver. The vehicle has been in to the dealer where the issue has been dulpicated and confirmed by two technicians and dismissed by master tech without actually test driving. This issue should be labeled warning because serious injury or death will eventually happen.

The steering on my 2013 kia Soul makes a clunking noise when steering left or right. The steering feels very unstable while driving. If I reach 75 mph the steering gets very noisy and loose. I’m now afraid to drive the vehicle. Upon researching this issue, I found that I am not the only one experiencing this problem. I haven’t taken it to a dealer as of yet. I wanted to see if there was a recall on it. There has been no warning lamps or messages appearing.

While driving car began shaking, which lead to a puff of white smoke then blac smoke followed by car locking up in highway. Break petal would not move and when put in neutral power steering was gone every though car was on and everything else besides break worked. Turn on and off and car drive off again with strong shaking. When taken to mechanic I was told a spark plug melted into the engine and the shaking caused one of the ignition coil to become loose and oil to seep in. Now I am being told I need a new engine, all fluids where fine and oil had just been changed Thursday prior to incident, car is unsafe to drive because of random lock ups and extreme shaking.

The steering wheel began to shake violently at highway speed and when making turns. When stopped, the steering wheel make a clunking noise when moved from side to side. Mechanic said it was a worn flexible steering coupler in the steering wheel power steering unit. The car is dangerous to drive and only has 80,000 miles on it. I am told this issue is common in kia Souls and should be subject to a recall. ,.

The car stalls constantly and has been going on for years. Kia had claimed to have fixed the problem that they had fixed the problem however they never did because the car has been continuing to stop in the middle of the road. This car is very dangerous and it has no recalls on it. The catalytic converter is a problem and even though it has been a problem for kia Souls mine is not listed in the recall. Needless to say that this has put me and my child in immediate life-threatening danger multiple times.

2012 kia Soul - steering column makes horrible clicking / shaking noise when turning wheel. Car only has 36k miles on it. Kia has identified this repair nationally already and offered to extend warranty to 10 years / unlimited miles due to a failed motor driven power steering (mdps) flexible coupling. Turns out mine conveniently failed right outside of this 10 year mark and they allegedly mailed a letter in 2019 to a home address that I moved from 5 years ago, even though I have been to the kia dealership many times since, was never told of this and they had my updated address for sure. I firmly believe this is a safety issue and life or death situation as this is causing my car to shake on the roads / highway and for the steering handling to be extremely frightening to me when driving. Kia hq was called by me today on this and refuses to step up. They simply told me no exception and this is a customer paid repair. This repair is likely $ 500 and I am certainly not going to accept this when this should be a recall as it impacts steering !!!.

Out of no where and without warning, the steering wheel pulls in opposite direction and stability control light turns green and stays on the dashboard. Cannot move steering wheel. Simultaneously, the hd radio will get very staticy and abruptly shut off. After about a minute, the radio will come back on and the steering no longer has that pressure. It is terrifying. The car has less than 100 miles on it. I bought it 8/15/23. This has happened twice. Trying to get a service appointment for this week.

The steering wheel makes a loud click/clang sound when turning the wheel right or left. This occurs when car is in parking or moving condition. Yes, it is available upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? my teenage son (high school) and wife are the main drivers and are now very concerned about their safety. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? no not yet. Kia has informed us that the 10 yr extended warranty has expired and they will not be able to cover this issue. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no not yet. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no.

On 8/15/23 I received my car back from the dealership after almost a month of repairs, trying to fix the issue where it would turn itself on and where it shut down while driving 45 miles an hour; at various points I was told it was the crankshaft, camshaft, spark plugs, fuel injectors, the pcm and a connector that was overheating. Yesterday, 8/15/23 the car was stuck in a long crank cycle. I notified the dealership. They told me to call kia. I drove the car to pick my husband up from the airport. While driving home the car suddenly accelerated, cars lights shut off, and the steering wheel made a hard turn to the left, the steering wheel then locked, sending us towards a ditch, and the car shut off, and the brakes locked. Right as we hit the edge of the irrigation ditch the car turned back on, the brakes went soft, and the steering wheel unlocked. While trying to correct the car the lane assist turned on (I never use it) causing us to further fishtail and almost drive into a telephone pole and another ditch. The back and forth motion caused me to pull a muscle in my neck, and I have had a migraine since the incident. I have been unable to seek medical care. When the car was stopped, the oil cap started sucking and blowing hot air, and the engine had a light knocking noise, somewhere between a lifter tick and a rod knock. When trying to use the kia assist in the car it could not locate where we were, resulting in kia trying to charge us for a tow. I have had the car a month, but ive only had it in my possession 5 days because of it returning to the shop for the same issues. The kia dealership says they have never seen this and don't know what is wrong. They have encouraged me to reach out to kia to see about a buy back, but kia is 3 weeks out on even reviewing my case.

The dealer originally said it was the steering coupler that was bad and needed replaced for $2000. Then they call back two weeks later to say the steering assist motor was bad and it needs to be replaced for an additional $2400. Still waiting for the parts and repairs. I see many other complaints on the steering, should this be a recall?.

My 2013 kia Soul does not currently have a recall issued for it, but there is a known steering problem that has resulted in 345,000 kia Souls being recalled. The recall starts with models manufactured in 2013, and yet my model has been excluded. The recall that was issued affects Souls manufactured for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 model years, spanning manufacture dates from July 21, 2013 though September 30, 2015. Warning signs of an impending failure could be a clunking noise from the steering rack when turning. My 2013 kia Soul has been experiencing this same clunking noise that has been increasing in severity and causing issues with steering. I am extremely concerned about the safety of driving a car with known steering issues. When I contacted my kia dealer directly about this concern, they said that the recall wasn't issued for my VIN number. The issue appears to be prevalent for kia Souls dating back further to 2012, as I have researched to see if others have experienced the same or similar issue. I have attached screenshots of other consumers who have experienced this issue and were also not included in the recall years. There were no warning lamps or messages and the issue has gotten progressively worse, and much more severe, over the past few weeks.

The steering flex coupler is worn down, making a loud clicking noise when the steering wheel is moved. The wheel shakes a lot when pressing the brake and the steering wheel begins to shake.

The steering coupler is worn on on my car. It causes the car to vibrate and a clunking sound to happen when driving. This is a common problem with kias but isn't covered by a recall.

I am writing upon instruction of minnesota attorney general ellison's office regarding my stolen kia. Our 2019 kia Soul was was purchased less than a year ago from a dealership. In the last year, the kia Soul has been stolen twice. Both times we incurred significant expenses to repair the car's broken windows and disassembled steering column. We also experienced huge inconveniences to arrive at work since we were without the vehicle for over a month each time. To make matters worse, our insurance company increased our rates each time the car was stolen. I now fear the car will be simply uninsurable when the policy reups. The only support we have seen from kia is receipt of an anti-theft steering lock ("club"). This device is worth about $25. It is an insult given the expenses we have incurred. We just got the car back from the autobody shop today. I remain very concerned about putting this car back on the street. We do not have a garage or can afford off street parking. The car is principally used by our son who lives in an apartment in minneapolis. We have heard of many instances when the car's windows are smashed even when an anti-theft device is on the steering wheel. I believe a vehicle recall is the only fair alternative. I realize that ellison's office is pursuing a class action suit with this goal. Please support that campaign and help us address this entirely impossible situation. If we try to sell this vehicle, we will lose nearly five thousand in value since it was purchased last year. We have already incurred about $3,000 in addition to insurance increases. Yet, I am sure we have any other option than selling it if our insurance either refuses to insure or jacks our rates even higher than they did last year. Sincerely, roopali phadke.

Clicking and knocking when turning or just parked turning the steering wheel. I hear it’s a steering coupler issue with lots of kias and Hyundai’s that can be dangerous. Did I miss a recall, how do I get this taken care of?.

On Wednesday July 19th, at approximately 1745 (5:45 pm) I got into my car and started it. I attempted to back out of the driveway and noticed my steering wheel was locked. I pulled forward, and put the car in park. I tried to turn the car off. It then restarted itself, revved the engine, turned the heater on, rolled down the windows and engaged the back up camera. The check engine light came on, the low oil light, and the battery light were all on. The car would not turn off, every time I pressed the off button it would idle strangely and turn itself back on. I had to remove the key fobs, and my phone from the vehicle (I have a remote start app) to get it to turn off. I had it towed to the dealership, who returned the car the next day and told me nothing was wrong and that it was in auxiliary mode. They showed me auxiliary mode and it did not do what had happened. I told them I would film it if the vehicle did it again. Yesterday July 21, 2023 the vehicle did it again, at approximately 2110 (9:10 pm). The dealership advised me to bring it back up today. While driving it up there the engine shut off while driving I was doing approximately 43mph with the keys located in the storage space near the gear shift. The entire car shut down, instrument cluster and all, my steering wheel locked, and I had to coast to the side of a road. The car then restarted itself and picked up where the cruise control had previously been set. It did this twice and I was almost hit by a large pick up truck the second time. Had the truck not braked in time I could have been killed, and had my daughter been with me she could have been seriously wounded. The dealership told me to limp it to them as a tow truck would not be avalible for hours. During the short drive the instrument cluster continued to fade in and out. The dealers only solution was to let them hold the car and drive it for the weekend while trying to replicate the problem. I have filmed it restarting, but not dying on the road.
