Mazda 1996 626 and a Mazda 2000 626. Both 4 cyl and both automatics, and both having to have transmissions replaced. Leaves you stranded on the road, and causes bad shifts in speed before you stop going forward completely.

Transmission failed in 98 Mazda 626 with 149k miles.
The Mazda 626 transmission is not known for its reliability. It fact, there have been numerous complaints about problems encountered with the Mazda 626 transmission. A common problem on the vehicle is the failure of the automatic transmission. When this fails, this may cause the overdrive light to flash. Other problems include slipping and vibration. Not understanding why there are no recalls on this product being that this has been going on for years why is Mazda not liable for this issue. . . . . . .

Coolant reservoir on Mazda 626 models has a design flaw. Our vehicle has required 4 of these since we've owned it. Each time, the part is no longer under warranty as it is over 12 months old. Failures occurred on 5/30/06 at 118k and again on 6/1/07 at 138k, and now on 7/11/08 at 162k. The problem is that they are manufactured with a seam on the bottom. The seam leaks and so coolant gradually leaks from the reservoir until you notice your vehicle slowly running hot. Since I watch may gauges closely, I always see when this is happening. Replacing coolant will prevent the engine from overheating but replacing the reservoir is always required. Locally this part costs $100. This does not include labor to remove/discard the old reservoir and to attach the new one. Our local Mazda dealership has 50 of these in stock at any given time. Seems like a large inventory for a part. This item needs to be redesigned so that the seam is more durable or so that there is no seam at the bottom where the leaks keep occurring. Others not aware of this problem may have allowed their engines to overheat causing much more costly problems in their engines. We have been fortunate in that we have always caught it early and that we have a good mechanic not associated with a dealership but who is Mazda certified.

My 2000 Mazda 626 LS overheated on June 16, 2006. The o/d off light has been flashing when on the road for more than an hour since the fall of 2005. The transmission has not yet failed but has begun to. The car strains whenever I drive it & its lack of stability has led to close calls with accidents whenever there's rain or snow. Every time I am on the road for more than 45 minutes, the engine heats up to the point that it boils the transmission fluid, which overflows onto the rest of the engine. After approx. 15 more minutes, the o/d off light begins to flash & my car starts to resist speeds over 60 mph. The rpms increase when the light flashes & there's a dangerous delay in my ability to slow the car down as the car lurches. On June 19, 2006, I took the Mazda to an imports specialist who informed me that my transmission will soon fail. A new transmission costs approx. $2800 & a used one costs approx. $1800. However, the transmissions that fit my car are the same type of transmission that was initially put in my engine & will fail after another 70,000 miles due to its being too small for the 626. Putting an "external cooling system" under the hood is approximately $300 & is a temporary bandaid for the issue which will still occur. I have done research & found thousands of documents that have stated that all automatic Mazda 626 LS vehicles from 1994-2000 have engines that were made for a smaller car & are therefore too small for the 626 LS. According to said research all 1994-2000 626 LS vehicles have transmissions that will fail between approx. 70-80,000 miles. My car has 74,400 miles at the date of this complaint. Mazda refuses to take accountability for this situation, yet it has become common knowledge among car dealerships, so the value of my car has dropped dramatically & it has become difficult for me to sell. Nothing can be done to fix the problem unless an entirely new engine is put into the car which will cost.
: the contact stated the vehicle is making noises in the engine. There is a NHTSA recall, # 00v134000, regarding the engine and engine cooling: engine. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.
Heard noise and bad vibration from front left , it got worse and louder when making turns. Took vehicle to dealer, who stated that front wheel bearing was bad. Around two weeks before the same thing happened, heard loud noise on front right, got louder when turning. Took vehicle to dealer, who replaced front right bearing. Car always serviced at dealer, two weeks before took car to dealer for pulling to the right. Dealer stated it needed an alignment and balancing. Did that next day and same thing happened within the past month. I had new front brakes, new tires, new right and left bearings, and several attempts to balance and rotate tires. Also having problems with transmission, but dealer insisted that nothing was wrong, sometimes the car will not change gears like it should when going over speed bumps. Vehicle stalled several times. Also, had to replace coolant bottle three times, and once car overheated. It was a manufacturing defect.

December 2004-January 2005-
1. Car overheats constantly
2. The transmission overheated the car and caused complications with the water pump, computer
3. Replaced all items; transmission rebuilt cost to fix $3200. 00 couldn't afford to just junk the car, as I had purchased it for $5200 the summer before. So I had to fix it. Within a week of getting the car back, it blew a radiator hose.

1. Turned air conditioner on. No cold air coming out, then shortly noticed the car heat gauge was showing hot, and fumes coming from hood. 2. Pulled to the side of road. Turned off engine and waited about 20 minutes before checking the hood. The coolant reservoir had coolant. Opened the coolant tank, and there was no steam or hot fluids from the tank. 3. Tried restarting after cooling and the car would not restart. Had car towed to repair store. Had to get another engine since the engine was damaged.
Vehicle overheated and spilled coolant. It had been to the repair shop 5 times for overheating.
: the contact stated that the engine overheated due to a coolant tank leak. The vehicle was inspected by a service dealer, where the coolant tank was replaced. After a year a half the new coolant tank started to leak causing the same overheating issue.
I bought a used 1996 Mazda 626lx from rierson motors in clovis, new mexico and have had the car less than one month and the engine light stays on , it loses power on the interstate when I accelerate above 55 mph and lurches and goes in to next gear very hard. I think Mazda should be held liable for these defects in this paticular model. I hope the government will look into this matter and investigate why so many consumers are having the same problems and Mazda should step up to the plate and admit their failure and fix the problem are compensate the consumer for their expenditures.

Suddenly the engine temperature went high easily when driving. The check engine light turned on with dtc(diagnostic trouble codes) p0125 error(temp. Insufficienr for closed loop fule control, the coolant). The dealers checked the cooling system and found that the coolant overflow bottle was leaking. Had to replace it.
I have spent over $2000 trying to get my engine light to turn off. Nothing works. Now I am being fined for not passing inspection. What is going on? I have been having this problem for 2 years. After various repairs the light would finally go off. Now it will not and has been on for over 6 months. I have had O2 sensor and cat sensor replaced, since that is supposedly what the code was. Still nothing and noone seems to care.
Consumer called complaining about the coolant bottle on the vehicle. It has been replaced twice, and currently it needs to be fixed again. The part was on back order. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that they will replace it, but it will take over a week to replace it. Dealer was contacted, and stated that they could not t do any repairs until the part becomes available. The problem has recurred for the fifth time along with the dealer replacing the coolant overflow bottle, with last incident, July 12, 2004.
The vehicle over heated twice. No leaks were noticed and anti freeze was added. The mechanic then noticed an open valve covered with a rubber cap had allowed anti freeze to leak onto engine.
Coolling system breakdown ruined engine. Car covered by warranty, but Mazda refuses to pay, claiming not responsible for overheating of engine.
While driving water pump busted, causing the vehicle to stall out and die without warning. Dealer has been notified.
Tires worn smooth on inside after 13000 miles( dot number: y7cd tire size: p205/60r15 ).
