Engine Failure Problems of Mazda CX-7

Engine vvt solenoid seized causing complete engine failure while traveling on the highway at 60mph. The dealer is asking $10,730 to replace the engine. The car has 76,000 miles.

Mazda is aware that the Cx-7 is a horribly made car which can be noted with the extensive list of recalls which the company has put out since its creation. Engine failure being the biggest concern to the safety of people on the road. Engine failure at 70mph on a busy highway can result in death. Something should be done to have Mazda compensate all owners for defectice vehicles. My engine failed and Mazda was of no help.

2007 Mazda Cx-7: timing chain and vvt hub started to fail prematurely, leading the car to not be driven and possible engine failure at speed. Mazda is aware of this design flaw and possible hazardous situation, but is reluctant to repair at their cost. Engine mount #3 has also broken creating unsafe situation.

While traveling at 45mph, experienced sudden loss of power. Cel came on and trouble p3001 was the code display on handheld reader. Car is out of warranty, dealer states several components within engine have failed and Mazda has no responsibility over failures since I do not have an extended warranty. I have researched the problem production years 2007 and 2008 are plagued with premature engine failure.

Vtt timing chain broke on this vehicle which could have resulted in a horrific accident if the car had been mobile. Mazda has acknowledged that this engine component is faulty, because they issued a warranty extension to 72,000 miles in January 2012. This sort of engine failure could lead, and may have already lead to numerous accidents if they vehicle stalls while on the interstate or other roadways. Mazda should recall the engine part and reimburse customers who have had to pay for this mechanical failure.

Our 2007 Mazda cx7 suddenly lost power and I was forced to stop the vehicle in the center median of the highway, as I was unable to move to the right due to other traffic. Vehicle was towed back to the dealership where problem was diagnosed as a broken pin on the variable valve time actuator (vvt). There was no prior indication of a problem with the vehicle (no warning lights) prior to the engine stopping. Dealership has indicated that complete engine replacement is recommended by Mazda. Currently the vehicle is awaiting arrival of an adjuster from extended warranty company to see if repairs/replacement will be covered. Additional online research has indicated that this is a well-document and frequently occurring problem with this make/model of vehicle, yet manufacturer has neglected to initiate a full recall. Rather they issued a "service bulletin" (#01-002/08) that addresses a vvt noise when starting engine. Bulletin states "some vehicles may exhibit a loud ticking noise from the variable valve timing. (vvt) this is caused by the lock pin of the variable valve timing actuator not fully engaging. Heat treatment has now been added around the hole of the variable valve timing rotor lock to prevent this from happening. " it is believed that had my vehicle exhibited any symptoms, I could have had the service bulletin repairs made, and the engine failure due to the broken pin would have most likely been avoided. This should have been a recall, and not addressed by a service bulletin. There is strong evidence, as discovered via the internet, that multiple cx7 vehicles have had this exact same type of failure where the vehicle has suddenly stopped running while being driven at highway speeds. This constitutes an extreme safety hazard that could possibly result in serious personal injury or death.

On 12/19/11, I was driving appx. 60 - 65 mph on I-81 when my 2007 Mazda Cx-7 just shut off. I was in the middle of traffic on the interstate, with a large tractor trailer behind me, but I was able to safely maneuver my car onto the shoulder of the interstate. My car would not start again. I did quite a bit of research on line regarding this particular issue and found a significant number of claims from other people that had this same problem happen to their 2007 Mazda cx7. The final diagnosis is total engine failure with a price tag of $7200 to fix. That would be for a whole new engine. I found a service bulletin from January of 2008 that corporate Mazda sent out to their dealers a problem with the timing chain. The bulletin specifically identifies a series of VIN#€™s affected, and mine falls into the category. There is currently about 65k miles on my car (I can€™t remember exactly), and I did not buy the extended warranty because who would think that a 2007 vehicle would need a new engine @ 65k miles? I think I should€™ve been notified that there was an ongoing issue with this particular model and year. Both Mazda and the dealership are telling me they will not do anything for me, because the vehicle is out of warranty. Mazda needs to take responsibility here. I'm lucky I was able to get my car through the traffic and off the interstate. Does someone need to be killed before this issue gets attention? my car showed absolutely no warning signs that something was wrong for me to pro-actively have this checked.

On September 22, 2011 our 2008 Mazda Cx-7 experienced a complete engine failure. This failure occurred without any warning while driving on a freeway: the engine had not previously experienced any problems or made any unusual noises, no indicator lights had signaled a problem, and we had made oil and oil filter changes in accordance with the maintenance schedule. The failure created an extremely dangerous situation, as the car lost power and this meant that several critical functions, most notably, the steering, were severely compromised; the driver only just managed to bring the car to a safe stop. The Mazda service center examined the engine of the car on September 26 and reported that the piston in the number 2 cylinder had failed damaging the engine beyond repair. The service manager verified our maintenance records and indicated that the engine was free of sludge or other build up.

2007 Mazda Cx-7 awd grand touring with 39k miles. Car was being driven had sudden loss of power while traveling down road. In traffic car suddenly slowed to crawl at 20mph once car was navigated to shoulder and stopped it would not restart. The vehicle was towed to dealership where they have stated that the timing chain or vvt has failed resulting in timing chain failure thus total engine failure. Known problem reported numerous times and yet Mazda dealership has informed me that with the maintenance records provided they are refusing repair. These timing chains are failing on cars with 19k-60k miles, not within normal maintence.

I purchased a Mazda Cx-7 new in 2008. I recently experience total engine failure while riding on the highway with my daughter. The Mazda dealer looked at the vehicle and contacted the warranty company and Mazda on this issue, Mazda stated there was "sludge" in the engine and that was not covered by the warranty. They stated this must've been caused by owner maintenance, however, I have maintained the car as stated in the manual. The company stated we need to produce copies of all of our oil changes since purchase of the vehicle and the dates/mileage at the oil change. We did not have this information, however many complainants who have produced the oil change history are still denied warranty claims. This issue of sludge is not only causes by the owner, but also caused by manufactured defects as in the Toyota case. Many other Mazda owners and mechanics have stated the turbo charging in the new Mazda Cx-7 has started to "cook" the oil too fast and this causes the sludge in the engine, however Mazda will not own up to this defect and honor the warranty and this vehicle. There have also been sited issues of the timing chain causing engine failure however Mazda would not look at any other issues. My vehicle is still under the 60,000 mile warranty and a defect of the engine going out should be covered. Mazda is illegally making the allegation about the owners of the vehicle causing the engine failure in a car only two years old, only to not be responsible for a problem it has caused. Please help me and other Mazda owners correct this issue. There are currently multiple complaints against Mazda and many vehicle owners such as myself are without a vehicle while in litigation with this issue. The repairs would cost over $7000. Complete engine failure without warning while traveling 70 m. P. H down 40 east xmas eve evening. I prayed my child and I wouldn't end up dead while trying to cut across two lanes to get off the road in my vehicle without engine power.

2007 Mazda cx7, at 57,211 miles , air condition compressor froze, disabled car. On 10/27/10 88 k miles, car would not start, independent garage determined it needs a new engine. Called Mazda corp. File # 132495780. Mazda representative asked to tow the car to a Mazda dealer for diagnostics, and Mazda will send a field manager to determine if the engine failure is due to manufacturer defect or not. Mazda may be willing to offer after warranty assistance in the cost of the repair or even cover the entire cost. Car was towed to a Mazda dealer on 10/28/10 am. At 5 pm same day, dealer called my wife and said that the car needs a new engine and it will cost $8000 + to fix it, and the Mazda corp field manager said that based on the maintenance record and mileage, Mazda corp will not offer any assistance. I was never asked to provide any maintenance records and I do not believe the field manager even looked at the car as Mazda representative said he would. Thier is 195 complains filed with the odi in regard to 2007 cx7 compressor and/or engine failure. I believe that the air compressor and the engine failure are due to manufacturer defect. Mazda corp. Is very well aware of it , and not owning up to it. Mazda corp is not even honoring cars under warranty in most cases, using the excuse of lake of maintenance records and sludge in the engine. May be Mazda corp. And the NHTSA are waiting for some one to die before they investigate the problem with the engine and compressor on the 2007 cx 7.
