3 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2007 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 04/15/2017

When starting the vehicle there is a loud sound coming from the engine for 2-3 seconds . It doesn't happen all the time, but it sounds like a card going through bicycle spokes and is accompanied by a high rev sound . This sound also happens when driving directly after the vehicle automatically shifts into a new gear, and is accompanied by a loss of power until the rev sound and card in spokes sound. Mazda corporation has been notified of all reports I have made, and I didn't know of this site to report until recently. I have reported addition defect s to Mazda corp as well but do not have the details at this time. That is the reason for submitting them all at this time.

5 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2010 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 04/17/2016

Was driving and all of a sudden lost power and a howling noise no check engine light came on. Pulled over to see what it was and nothing visible no leaks nothing. Had my wife hit the has and no noise. Stared driving and noise came back and white smoke. Just had an oil change done and next oil change due in about 1000 miles. Drove about 20 mph to get home check oil and it was ok. The white smoke makes me think the turbo went on my car. I just purchased this car in October of 2015. It's been back to the shop for electric problems with the key and radio that still not resolved. Radio shuts off and beeps that key is not in car.

6 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2008 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 01/30/2013

Earlier that day I got my oil changed on my lunch break at work. I drive back to work my car sits in the parking lot and I leave a few hours later well my car it was making a really loud noise it sounded like a helicopter I live about 30 miles away so I figured if I drive slow enough I might be able to make it home. As I was going up a hill the car start to decelerate so im like ok maybe I need to go slower no I get up over the hill and am going down the hill and the car just dies there on the side of the road. I get it towed to Mazda the next day because I find out I have a powertrain warrenty until 60,000 miles I only have 54,000 miles on it so they tow it under my roadside assistance. Now my car has been there for a month and come to find out my timing chain went on it causing a domino effect on it and making the engine go. Now the dealership wants 8 grand to fix my car because Mazda denied my claim due to "engine sludge" which at this low of miles and me performing regular oil changes they considered "lack of maintance" because I couldnt prove it.

7 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2007 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 11/28/2012

I started the car, like I regularly do and the engine/timing chain made a horrible sound that got me very worried since this car is taking care very good since its the only car in the household. I contacted Mazda and they said the car had a warranty extension for a l3t engine variable valve timing noise and timing chain noise which is cause by " actual failure due to defects in workmanship or materials in accordance with Mazda warranty policy and procedures. This warranty extension was for 70,000miles or 7 seven years which ever came first, so my car was not cover since it had 101,000. My concern and disappointment is that after searching and taking to other Cx-7 owners the (2007-08) models all had issues with this and Mazda did not made a recall just extended the warranty. Cars with mileage of as low as 24,000 were affected by it, so its clearly not a wear and tear issue of the car. If that is not replace the engine might be damage and Mazda will not even offer a goodwill assistance. I still make monthly payments on the car and its impossible for me to pay $1200 in something that is clearly stated by Mazda is a "defect in workmanship or materials". Its a shame that so many other customers are still battling with this issue and Mazda just hides behind their power and attorneys.

8 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2007 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 08/03/2012

While driving with my ac (air conditioning) on, it suddenly started blowing warm air. The car filled up with a burnt tire like smell and I quickly turned the air conditioning off. After giving it a few minutes and parking my car on a shoulder lane, I turned the air conditioning back on to see if it's going to start working again (while the car was still running). My ac was still blowing warm air but now there was a loud noise what appeared to be coming from the engine along with the burnt tire like smell. I decided to return home and have my husband take a look at it before I contact the dealership service to fix it. As my husband open the hood of the cx7 and I turned on the ac there appeared to be alot of sparks coming from the ac air compressor, right beside the engine. This looks as if it can potentionally set on fire. Mazda did send out a warrenty extension letter (ssp 81) back in 2010 for this very same issue. This warranty extension was covering vehicles up to 5 years/60000 miles.

10 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2009 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 04/27/2012

Around the end of April 2012 I noticed that my Mazda started making a loud noise - comparable to a semi or diesel truck. The noise was constant, regardless of speed, and maintained at the same level as long as the car was on. I took the car to Mazda on may 12th to determine the cause of the noise. Within a few hours of dropping the car off, the dealership called me back and advised that it was the vvt system that was causing the noise and it needed to be fixed. All they needed was my oil change receipts to cover this repair under warranty. I advised them that I don't keep all of my oil change receipts; that I go to various businesses each time I get an oil change based on who has a special, coupons, nearest location etc. I was then told without the receipts I would have to pay $4000 for the repair. After doing a lot of research on the internet, I've discovered that this problem is caused by faulty parts used by Mazda - and not by potential neglect from the consumer. There's case after case of people reporting similar problems in their cx7, Mazda requiring oil change history, and service being denied regardless if appropriate history is provided. Upon further inspection the technicians find "oil sludge" in the vehicle and quickly determine that it's the fault of the consumer. I've now been asked to bring my car back into the dealership for futher diagnosis. I told both the representative at the warranty desk as well as my service manager at the dealership that based on my research online, I already can predict what will be found and what will be said to me. I noted that Mazda recently issued a letter of January of this year extending the warranty of this very part because of the on going issues. So this isn't something they're unaware of - it's just something they are (wrongly) refusing to cover on their warranty. Something needs to be done about Mazda's neglect!.

11 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2007 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 09/09/2011

I was driving my Mazda Cx-7 on the highway around 65 mph when my car starting making a loud noise from the engine and had a sudden loss in power. So I pulled over in the next town and stayed in a motel for the night. The next day I rented a trailer from uhaul to tow the car to a Mazda dealer who stated that my engine needed to be opened to properly diagnose the actual problem. Per the Mazda technician that inspected my car, the timing chain (vvt) was missing a pin and caused the engine to break. Therefore my engine needed to be replaced. At the price it was to replace the engine, I obtained a second opinion from a non-Mazda mechanic who stated that my engine also needed to be replaced. I replaced my engine at 72,127 miles, for approximately $6k, which is slightly over the 70,000 mile service notice that Mazda recently put out for reimbursement from repairs related to the vvt timing chain. After I submitted my claim to Mazda north american operations, my claim was denied because I was slightly over the mileage that they determined was appropriate. I would have expected Mazda to be a little more understanding as it was their dealership who initially diagnosed the problem. As such, I have currently hired a lawyer to pursue reimbursement of my engine replacement cost as this part has caused several other individuals to have to replace their entire engines. My lawyer would like to know if there are more cases of the Mazda Cx-7 engine breaking due to timing chain failure that was also near or above 70,000 miles. Please respond/comment to this post so that we may use your story/information as verification that the vvt timing chain is an issue on the Mazda Cx-7.

12 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2007 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 09/05/2010

Our 2007 Cx-7 Mazda developed noise. We received letter from dealership regarding possible need to fix ac compressor. About 10 days later on sept. 5 2010 we took a trip and did not turn on the ac but a loud noise developed and we lost acceleration ability. No warning light ever came on. Our car has about 40,000 miles on it. Towed it to Mazda dealershilp. They said they couldn't tell what was wrong. Several days later they said the turbo had failed and the engine is ruined and would need replacing. They said that the engine had no oil (remember, no warning light) and they found sludge, indicating neglect. We have had oil changes as required. They have not agreed to fix it. We have found numerous other owners of same model and year online on edmunds. Com. It seems to be a problem for this particular model and year and the dealers response is to deny honoring warranty due to "sludge". Our next move is to take it to the dealership we purchased it from out of town.

13 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2007 Mazda CX-7

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

I own a 2007 Mazda cx7 that the a/c compressor seized up on causing a near fire under the hood. I heard an awful noise and saw smoke billowing under the hood. I shut it down immediately knowing that what was about to happen couldn't be good. I went online and found out this has happened to many cx7s now the dealer is telling me that because I've owned this for 37 months, (35,000 miles) that it isn't covered by the 60,000 mile drive train warranty, (if I can't drive it, its a drivetrain problem to me). . . This needs to be a class action lawsuit. . Or a recall you're choice.
