Brake booster failure caused a near miss. Wife driving with 5 year old daughter in the vehicle. The stopping force required on the brake pedal became excessive and the stopping (safe braking) distance significantly increased causing emotional distress. My understanding is this part (brake booster) has a defective diaphragm that deteriorates over time. The extended warranty created for this particular issue did not cover the vehicle at the time of the failure.
Brake booster damaged. I ended up with no brakes and nearly crashed.

The contact owns a 2012 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated while driving 25 mph and approaching a stop sign, while depressing on brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that she pumped the brake pedal and shifted gears to neutral until the vehicle came to a stop. The contact was able to drive to her residence. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed that the power brake booster and master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,805.
Driving on I-5, near gold hill, oregon, when the traction control system light came on and the vehicle slowed down. I had to push the gas pedal to the floor to get the car to move and I could not shift gears! it shuddered and the wheels seemed to lock up. I could smell burning rubber. I forced the car to the next exit, pulled off and shut it down. I sat there waiting for it to cool off. When I started it again it was a little rough at first but then seemed to get better and I was able to get home. I bought the car in June of 2020 from lithia motors in medford, oregon. I also bought a power train warranty for $2,500 which was set to expire on 6/10/2021. I called lithia and made an appointment to take it to them for repairs on June 1, 2021. I got as far as grants pass, or, and it did the same thing I described above. I called a tow truck and had it towed to lithia in medford. When I got to medford, the service manager told me I would have to take it to crater lake Ford. When I got to crater lake Ford I was told to take it to crater lake Mazda which I did. I described in detail what the car was doing to. The service. Manager and told him I feared it was some kind of transmission problem. I also told him I had a power train. Warranty the would expire on june10thso time was no the essence! I never suspected the brakes because we had the bakes repaired in November of 2020 at lithia motors. They were making a hissing sound. They replaced the. Brake booster among other brake parts for $1,300 plus. That job was still under warranty. I got a call on June 15th telling me the problem was in the gear shift. He said it was now repaired and I could come and pick it up. I paid $674 for that repair. I got three miles from the dealership and the original problem occurred. I had it towed back to Mazda and it has been there ever since!! they replaced they're (traction control module), but that didn't fix it. After test driving it the original problem occurred! it's still at Mazda.

Our 2014 Mazda cx-9 power brake booster has gotten progressively worse over the last few months and has now failed at 75,269 miles where the pedal is spongy, pedal travel is long and there is a hissing noise (air leakage) from the power booster, all resulting in severely reduced brake effectiveness - very little. We cannot safely drive the car. This is the same failure and safety defect that was the subject of odi investigation pe-14-005 (odi closed 2/10/2014) involving 2007-2013 Mazda cx-9 vehicles in which the odi resume said "the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect and take further action in the future if warranted. " in that case, in order to avoid a recall, in March 2014 Mazda agreed with the NHTSA/odi to extend the warranty for 7 years or 100,000 for the 2007-2013 Mazda cx-9 vehicles and repair the condition and initiated special service program ssp93. This now is exactly that same condition but in the next year model - a model 2014 Mazda cx-9 manufactured in 2013 that obviously received the defective power brake booster that was manufactured before the booster supplier corrected the faulty booster mold in February 2013. Yesterday (4-29-21) Mazda said (Mazda customer service reference # 1-378914617) our vehicle is not covered for the repair because the NHTSA/odi agreement and ssp93 only applies to 2007-2013 vehicles where ours is a 2014, even though it was manufactured in 2013. This is not only another example of the same problem now existing in 2014 Mazda cx-9's with a power booster manufactured before the February 2013 faulty booster mold correction, it is unconscionable for Mazda to refuse the repair. Please - we need your help in resolving this - and need you to re-open the investigation for the safety of others. Thank you.

Happened to me two times in past three weeks, where I am coming to a stop, or hardly moving, and car suddenly accelerates. Had my foot on the brake and the car was still trying to accelerate. Yesterday, 4/24/21 it took all my strength on the brake to keep the car from pulling into oncoming traffic. I have been driving for 39 years and have owned many cars, and something like this never happened to me. I will be bring the car dealership tomorrow, the car has only 10k miles on it as we don't do a lot of driving with it as we owe two cars. I did not have my foot on the wrong pedal, this is very dangerous and if the dealer does not find anything with the car, I intend to sell it, as this is probably one of the scariest experience I had with a car. It is intermittent, so I am not sure when its going to occur, but twice in the last few weeks is not coincidence ( it also happened to my wife a few months ago, but we thought it could have been due to snowy road conditions). In one case I was coming up to a stop sign, and was braking and car was accelerating as I tried to break. I had to put car in neutral and the shut off car to get to stop. Yesterday, I was pulling out of a parking lot, and was waiting for an on coming car to pass me before I could turn onto road, when car was trying to accelerate, when I had my foot on brake, and took everything to keep the car from accelerating forward into on coming car. Once car passed, I made turn onto road, and issue did not repeat on the remaining mile to my house. I went onto a Mazda forum and I saw a few others who raised the same concern/issue.

I have been experiencing issues with my brakes. Very hard to push, not coming to a stop, sounds like air & makes a hissing sound when brake are applied. The 1st time I noticed I was driving straight on a 2 lane st. A car was coming from the off ramp on the right of me & cut me off. I tried to brake but, they were so hard to push down, I had to jump into the next lane in order to not rear end her but, because I honked my horn, the lady jumped into her next lane causing me to have to cut back over again, all the while my brakes are really hard to push, the car wouldn't stop. They made hissing sounds. I had my mechanic check, states it's the brake booster & there may be a recall. I checked online, just a warranty. Mazda will repair before 90k or 7 years. I called Mazda, who said they only make recalls with safety issues. I'd say the brakes malfunctioning is definitely a safety issue. The 7 yr expiration was up in 2018. When I bought the vehicle it already had 105k, so the warranty was expired. That makes no sense. It should have been a recall. What happens to people like me who buy the Mazda cx-9 after the 7 yr or 90k mile expiration? it doesn't apply to us and we have to pay out of pocket? knowing that this was a safety issue and that it was happening to 2010-2011 cx-9 models, it should have been deemed a recall. Especially when people buy used cars. This is not just an isolated issue or incident. This was literally listed by people with the same complaints. I have not been able to fix my vehicle. It's my source of transportation to get to work. I definitely believe this should have been a safety recall because people are still having issues. What if someone dies. Who'll be at fault if a persons brakes go & they get into an accident & get injured or die? there have been so many complaints regarding this issue, how could it be deemed a warranty and not a safety recall?.
Within 6-8 months of purchasing the car we noticed the brakes squeaking and vibrating. At that time the car was under 25,000 miles. At our maintenance check it was advised that we have the brakes resurfaced at the next appt. Back brakes were done in 3/2019 and the front were done in 6/2019. We noticed the squealing and vibration returned again. At our recent maintenance check, we asked to have the brakes and rotors inspected. We were told everything looked fine and nothing needed to be done, however we are still experiencing the vibration which is very troubling. We called another place explaining the issue and they said that it sounds like we need new rotors. Our car has mostly been sitting over the last year and a half with very few added miles. We're curious to know why a car with less than 25,000 miles on it needed the rotors resurfaced and why with less than 60,000 miles it needs new rotors. The brakes on the Mazda SUV's seem to wear rather quickly or perhaps the incorrect brakes are put on for this size of vehicle. The increased vibration seems like a safety hazard.
Emergency parking brake (epb) began to malfunction following recall to fix electrical components on Mazda cx-9, 2018. Epb will not release, or will unexpectedly and suddenly release with car accelerating in gear (drive or reverse). Most recently when activating the emergency parking brake ((car was on a a roadway incline) the brake would not release, after 2 hours of being stranded and of attempting to get the brake to release, ( including rocking/shifting/alternating gears/braking/seat belt on/seat belt off/ manual brake on/off and following all manual procedures repetitively) a cell phone call to the Mazda service manager who suggested rocking the car back and forth between gears ) the emergency parking brake suddenly and unexpectedly released, sending the car lurching forward and requiring driver to slam on brakes to avoid driving over a cliff). Vehicle epb inspection requested, Mazda service manager stated the epb is, no longer necessary for vehicle safety, blamed the malfunction on bread crumbs , offered to replace a defective console switch (presumably with another new, but also defective, switch) but refused to inspect the mechanical/operational aspects of the automatic emergency parking brake system (for abnormal rust, water leaks, defective cables, defective electrical wiring, etc. ). Mazda uses the same manufacturer of epb for all Mazda cx series vehicles. Federal nhsa recalls for epb malfunctions were mandated for all Mazda cx series vehicles - except the Mazda cx 9. The cx 9 uses the same epb system as do the other Mazda cx series models. It stands to reason that the braking issues for other Mazda recalls is the same reason why the cx 9 should have recalls to fix the automatic emergency parking brake system. Please issue a recall for Mazda cx 9 vehicles to fix the automatic emergency parking brake defect(s). Thank you.
My control arms bearings and joints are rusted and the dealership says they aren't covered they were fixed 5 years ago and they are definitely separated and hazardous.

Sometimes the blind signal works sometimes it doesn't sometimes it blinks on the screen and when switching lanes, brakes keeps going out ball joint keeps popping hard shift or knock in reverse and when placed in park had repair done several times. Dvd wires keeps going out/shortage m. Sometimes seat belt blinker work and sometimes it doesnt.
As I was driving downhill with minimal snow on the ground, I tapped my brakes about 7 times before they locked up. I went to turn to stay on the road and the steering wheel wouldn't budge causing me to go off the road, into an embankment. Vehicle was going about 5-10mph when this occured on a city street.

I was driving slowly about 30miph and began hearing a hissing noise when I depressed the brake pedal. Once I pulled into my driveway a small incline, and pushed the brake pedal it was very tight and stopped at a point, but would not go further, tried shifting different gears. Finally brake depressed. Hissing has continues, very stiff brake pedal.
Hissing sound when break pedal is applied. Power break booster failure. This is when the vehicle is stationary or moving on any street.
I was driving and all of a sudden I lost the pressure on my brake and my car wont stop. I had to depressed the brake so hard. Then I started hearing a hissing noise while stepping on the brake.
I experienced a several braking problems in my car in the fall of 2020. I took it to the Mazda dealership and they replaced the braking system per Mazda's ssp 93 bulletin. However, Mazda informed me that my car was outside of the extended warranty for this issue and I had to pay for the repair myself. I argued that it was clearly a safety issue because the braking system performed so poorly that I nearly got in multiple accidents. Mazda stated that it was not a safety issue, therefore no recall was necessary, and I wouldn't be covered for the repair. I believe the NHTSA needs to make this a full safety recall. The braking failure is very dangerous to drivers and Mazda needs to take full responsibility for this issue.
The brake pedal seems hard too stop the car when in motion on public streets, vehicle continues too roll upon pumping brakes, have too continuously pump the brake hard too stop the vehicle, had the front brakes replaced recently, and brake pedal is still not functioning correctly, possibly the brake booster.

The brake became very stiff and made a hissing sound when applied while driving. I brought my car to an independent mechanic and back to the dealer where I brought the car and they both confirmed that I needed to replace the brake booster. That the hissing sound was leakage.

My wife and daughters took a trip, and on the way home, the engine light came on. When turning on the engine to check the engine light, I noticed that the brake pedal was hard. I was thinking the engine light had to do with the gas cap not being on tight since family purchased gas on the trip back home. I drove the cx-9 to autozone to determine the code for the engine light. The attendant at autozone was unable to register a code. However, I noticed the brakes felt different on the drive to autozone. Although I had to apply more pressure to stop, it took longer to stop. It rolled to a stop. When I got back home, I heard a hissing sound coming from under the dashboard. Mazda's owner's manual regarding the engine light indicates 1. ) the fuel tank level being very low, 2. ) possible electrical system problem, 3. ) emission control problem, or 4. ) fuel filler cap is missing or lose. The next morning I drove the cx-9 to see if tightening the gas cap would correct the engine light. During the drive, the braking seemed different. I would press the brake, but the vehicle would roll to a stop instead of stopping. When I was approaching a car stopped at a red light, I had to press the brake very hard to avoid the vehicle. I parked it and called the local Mazda dealer. After they performed a diagnostic test, the brake booster was determined to be faulty. I was confused about how a brake booster and an engine light correlates. I'm also trying to understand why the brake system warning light was not activated since this relates to the braking system. After additional research, I'm in complete disbelief that Mazda is aware, and it has not decided to address this safety issue. Please take action to have Mazda recall the brake boosters to address this issue since it's aware the problem is an equipment/materials issue.
Brake booster on vehicle went out while driving, hard to engage brake and slow vehicle to a stop.
The brakes suddenly became very difficult to press as if I did not have power brakes. No warning lights came on and it became very difficult to stop the car. Then if I had to break suddenly and hard it would stall. I brought it to the repair shop and the brake booster was defective. The brake booster along with the master cylinder had to be replaced. It was a very dangerous and frightening experience the brakes suddenly difficult to use. I contacted Mazda customer service and they did not care. I then tried to escalate the issue over the last two years but it was impossible to contact anyone and all emails came back undeliverable. I just recently learned that I can report this danger to the NHTSA.
When applying brake, hear hissing sound down at feet. Hard to stop, feels like pedal is pushing back. This happens at all speeds, even when putting car into gear from park. It has been ongoing for about 2 weeks. Mechanic advised it is the brake booster.
Brake booster spongy. . . Known Mazda issue,NHTSA closed issue when Mazda agreed to extend warranty, without recall. Our problem occurred after warranty ended. . . Proving brake recall needs to happen!!!! on July 1st,2020, my wife's trip back home nearly turned tragic when the car wouldn't brake(felt spongy) down the highway ramp . Fortunately for her ,there were no cars at the intersection as the car zoomed right at 60 mph . Eventually, she was able to maneuver it to the right lane and drove it home with hazard lights on. Rightfully distraught about the whole ordeal ,we had to thank our stars for having her home alive and without causing injury/death to others. On my drive to the mechanics I heard air hissing and felt the brake really hard to push. Again hazard lights/ manual drive got us there. The mechanics immediately suggested that this is a known problem with Mazda cx-9 and that Mazda was aware of it. He said that Mazda had provided extended warranty for customers who had the issue until March 2015. We were grossly unaware of any of this,as we never had the problem until this July. Not sure how we went on for so long without any problem( may be proper care/use?),but any issue with a brake should have been addressed by a complete recall ,not by just providing extended warranty for a limited time ,just for people currently experiencing the issue. Mazda customer service downplayed the complaint as owner's expense as we did not have the warranty. Our situation proves that brake issues are not solved by extending warranty, and the only way to address this is by issuing a recall and correcting the problem. In addition, there might be many more Mazda owners still driving their vehicles, completely unaware of this problem, thus constituting hazardous driving conditions. The next time we might not be as lucky to escape without injury/death.
My brakes started feeling spongy but hard to push when I would try to come to a stop. It felt at times like my car wasn't going to stop. I stopped driving it and the brake booster was replaced. At that time, I lost brakes completely. The brake peddle goes all the way to the floor when pressed. Hopefully the booster is a bad one.

Purchased from a certified pre-owned Mazda dealer. . . . I experienced, with no warning, my brakes become hard to press. It happens in reverse, coming off cruise, slow/fast speed, etc. I have to use an extraordinary amount of effort to press the brakes and bring the car to a stop. If someone pulls out in front of me, there is no guarantee I would be able to operate the brakes quickly enough to avoid an accident. I have children I transport and it is concerning for me as a mom especially. A few times the pedal will release and operate normally after the extra pressure is applied which causes the car to jerk to a stop because the brakes were being pressed very hard. Most times, extra pressure is required the entire time. This is a major safety concern and an issue I am aware is common in this model. Mazda extended this warranty to 90k and 7 years back in 2015; however, this does not cover used car purchasers. The issue was not disclosed to me in my purchase date of 12/12/2016. Had I known this major component could fail, I would have made a more educated decision on whether to purchase or request the faulty system be corrected.
I'm constantly have a front windshield error : causing my vehicle to just automatically stoping while driving on the freeway and streets. My air bags didn't deploy when I was I a accident . I've taken it to the dealer 3 times already and they always have a different excuse or reason.
Brake pedal has become harder than usual to depress and the car does not start stopping until the brake pedal is depressed harder and further down. Also there is a hissing noise once the car stops and the brake pedal goes further to the floorboard. Once stopped and sitting the car will lurch as if it has been hit in the rear end. This all happens on any type of roadway. This has been going on for about two months and getting more pronounced.
I went from having brakes to having to push the brake to the floor, which still did not stop the car, all in the same day. I was lucky not to wreck but could not stop for stop signs or stop lights all while my 22 month old was in the vehicle. Something in the brake system messed up, and it still had a full thing of brake fluid. I believe that it is the brake booster causing this problem.
I am now experiencing what Mazda mailed owners previously (see attached ssp93 owners notice) regarding "power brake unit warranty extension program ssp 93 2007-2013 Mazda cx-9". I strongly believe that this is a safety issue since I find myself running stop signs when I try to stop the vehicle at an intersection. I know that Mazda extended the warranty to 7 years on it's ssp93 bulletin. But what happens to owners like myself who do not fall within that time-frame and are now experiencing this safety issue? it is unconscionable, that since Mazda has acknowledged this problem, that the owner like myself gets stuck with this safety problem concerning failure of the braking system on the cx-9. Please advise. Thanks.
Brake booster hissing when applying breaks while traveling and stopped.
About 1 month ago I noticed my car making a hissing sound when my foot was on the brake pedal at a red light or stop sign. If I was a long red light or in a drive thru for more than 5 minutes I noticed my car would begin to tremble. Then about a week ago I noticed if I had to brake suddenly, the brake pedal was very hard to push down making it almost impossible to stop. I took the car to the dealer on 2/3/2020 and the technician mentioned that they have been having problems with the brake booster.
I was pulling into a parking spot in the upper parking lot at work. I stepped on the brake pedal so that I could stop and park but the pedal was hard and had no give. The car continued to roll forward over a curb and partly down a small set of stairs that go from the upper parking lot to the lower parking lot. The car stopped when it hit a metal railing and I shifted the car into park.
The contact owns a 2011 Mazda Cx9. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 13 mph and attempting to slow down, the brake pedal was harder than usual to depress. As a result, the driver rear ended the vehicle in front causing a five vehicle collision at a traffic light. None of the frontal air bags deployed. The police were present and a police report was filed. There were no injuries reported. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot where the insurance company was scheduled to have an inspector inspect the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnostic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA action number: pe14005 (service brakes, hydraulic). The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
Brakes when applied would sometimes go to the floor before stopping. The brake booster has gone bad and very dangerous almost causing an accident. Brake pedal soft and sometimes will not stop.
