67 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly have been reported for the 2006 Mercedes Benz E350. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Leak on the sending unit in fuel tank. Possibly need to replace fuel tank as well. Strong gas smell. Evidently this happens on most of these card and no recall gas been made by mb.
Strong gas odor inside the car. It made me dizzy and had to open the window fully. Closed the window with ac on at maximum fan speed would not help. The odor lasted for 2 weeks. I found the gas accumulated on top of the tank at driver side after I removed the rear seat.
Very strong, lasting, gas odor inside and outside the car. I searched forum of mbworld. Org and found many similar complaints. The cause could be a leaking fuel lever sender due to broken seal. I removed the rear seat and found a puddle of gas on top of the tank. The dealer I called told me there was no recall on this matter and I world have to pay $160 for diagnostic even this is emission related safety issue.
I took our car to the dealership for regular maintenance and state inspection. After receiving a phone that the gas tank had leaks and needed to be replaced for $2500 in order to pass state inspection I did some research and discovered that there are over 500 complaints being reported with this problem. Obviously, a gas leak is a major safety issue and given that it appears to be a common defect we are surprised that it has not been put into a recall status.
The issue originated as a faint fuel smell when the tank was 3/4 full or higher, parked on slight inclines. The problem has become increasingly worse, and today left a trail of fuel behind it. Calling local dealership tomorrow. Current mileage is 123,3xx.
When I filled the gas tank I started noticing strong gasoline smell inside the car. The strong odor stayed for more than a few days then went away as the gas was used in driving. Three days ago I had the gas tank filled again and I looked up the problem on online forums and found out that this is a complaint lodged with NHTSA. I'd like to file my safety complaint too as my car is an accident waiting to happen. My garage is filled with gasoline fumes and when I tried to pull the car out of the garage yesterday, I noticed physical gasoline dripping near the back wheel. I called mb USA and the local mb dealer, they all said that I should stop driving it as its a fire/safety hazard and take it into the local mb dealer. Unfortunately, mb will not cover the cost of this repair as its outside the 4 years/50k miles warranty. I've been told that the repair can be expensive and since there's no recall from mb, I'd have to pay for it. If there's a recall (whenever that happens, could take month/years!!) then mb 'might' reimburse me. I think that this issue needs to be taken care of ASAP by the relevant authorities and mb should provide the right assistance in getting this hazardous and life threatening issue addressed.
Have been smelling gas inside car and in garage on fill up of gas tank. On 2/21/13, dealer found gas pooled about an inch thick on top of the 2 sending units under 2nd row seats of this station wagon. Gas was leaking out thru the seals and locking rings on top of sending units. Dealer found defective locking rings, seals, and gas sending units. All 3 parts replaced on both sides right under the 2nd row seats where my children were riding. This defect could cause injury or death to anyone in or close to the car if gas tank exploded from gas leaking from these defective parts . Extremely dangerous.
Following fill-up and only when tank is fuel, strong odor of fuel in garage. Talked to mechanic that inspected vehicle. Found research online describing similar concern and ongoing NHTSA investigation.
I am experiencing highly intoxicating fumes coming from the vehicle gas tank. I can no longer park vehicle inside my garage for fear of an explosion. When taken to a dealership, I was told there was a bulletin on the gas tank, but doe to the vehicle being out of warranty, the repairs were not covered.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Mercedes Benz E350. The contact stated that while parked, he noticed a strong gasoline odor around the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. The technician stated that the fuel tank was leaking fuel from the upper part of the tank. The technician replaced the fuel seal. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000. After my wife, filled up the vehicle there was a very strong fuel smell both in the cabin and the trunk. The smell goes away after the fuel level is reduced as a result of driving. However, as every time the tank is filled up (never top the fuel tank) there is a very strong smell. This has caused my wife being light headed and sick after about 10-15 minutes of driving. She has to lower the window when driving. Fuel is a carcinogen and very dangerous to human health.
Gas tank leaking causing gas to drain into back seat. Cost to replace was aprox 1000 for part alone. After going to mercedes, my other mechanic was looking at other used parts and found that all used parts had same issue and leaking for exact location. Upper portion of gas tank. Looking online, there are lots of these issues going on. Mercedes needs to address this issue.
On gas filled up, the entire garage smell of strong gasoline smell that can cause nausea and dizziness if garage door is not opened to allow fresh air, mechanics said there is a leak in the fuel system and similar car owners have the same issue. Smell will go away when the fuel level is below 7/8 level. I started having this problem at around 50,000 miles and repaire 51,103. The smeel was also strong in the cabin. Mercedes should recall this defects for epa, safety and health concerns before any incidence and resulting class action lawsuit. The dealer wrote me an email stating ". The sender seals we replaced are on each side and where you see the large red caps. These seals generally deteriorate with time, age and with heat. " but they had to change the whole gas tank at a cost of $2,057. In the service ticket it was indicated "found fuel tank leaking at breather hose " which is part of the vapor recovery system that is warranty for 10 years but mercedes denied the replacement. This is a violation of the clean air act and need to be resolve.
Check engine light came on had vehicle checked throughly discovered fuel sending unit/tank problem.
On 11/20/12, I filled up my car and got a car wash. The car wash attendant asked if I had spilled a can of gas or was transporting a can of gas in my car. He said that there was a strong odor of gas coming from my car. My car was wet, so I could not differentiate water from gas on the outside. I started driving home when I realized the smell of gasoline was coming from inside my car. My child was in the car with me. We were about a mile from home. I kept the windows open. I parked my car and put cardboard beneath it trying to find the location of the fuel leak/odor. I went inside to find a diagram of the gas tank location when I realized this was not an isolated problem with my mercedes. Several people had similar experiences with their mercedes. There were several internet forums related to leaking fuel tanks in their mercedes. I later learned that gas was leaking inside of my car under my child's car seat with a cigarette lighter in the back of the car. It was a frightening moment for me as a mother. I should have had my car towed, but I did not realized how unsafe the situation was until I arrived home. I tried contacting my local and corporate mercedes dealerships to see if there was a safety recall. There was not. They asked me to drive my car to their dealership. I lost all confidence and trust in mercedes after my phone conversations. I bought a mercedes because of their reputation for caring about safety. The mechanic who diagnosed and fixed the car wrote "removed and replaced fuel tank. Assembly - leak around vent assembly not serviceable". He also commented that he was surprised that the local mercedes dealership had so many gas tanks in stock when he called. He said the replacement part was different or redesigned.
Please help to encourage Mercedes Benz to replace to new gas tank part #211-470-0502, for all their cars that have this defective gas tank part # 211-470-4201! on 10-24-2012 I came into Mercedes Benz dealership because I smelled gas and oil. The dealership misdiagnosed the gas smell to be the sending units, replacing them. List: (211-470-40-94 auxiliary pu, 211-471-05-79 seal ring, 5088 parts cleaner). Then on Jan 28, 2013, when I came in for my annual inspection, the dealership said that the fuel tank was leaking and said that needed to be replaced. Mercedes benz dealership had misdiagnosed the sending units when it should have been the gas tank on 10-24-2012. Mercedes benz, old gas tank part # 211-470-4201, replaced by new gas tank part 211-470-0502. The reason why this is so important that Mercedes Benz replace all tanks out there is because it only takes a small spark from rubbing your foot on the carpet, to an accident or lighting up a cigarette for this to create an explosion, because the gas tank is in the back seat of the car. I have two invoices that I paid for bad parts and replacing a defective gas tank on this Mercedes Benz. I am very concerned that Mercedes Benz has cars on the road that are an accident away from blowing up! a gas tank that is leaking gas in the back seat of my car is not something I would have paid over $56,000 for when I purchased my car! what about all the cars that were sold and all the people who don't even know and may be in danger? please look into the defective gas tank that was put on all the 2006 mercedes E350 cars. This should be recalled and replaced at expense of Mercedes Benz!.
Fuel tank leaking fuel at vent hose in top of tank. The complete gas tank had to be replaced. This was discovered after safety complaint odi number 10476789 was filed outlining another severe gas tank leak. I followed the servicing dealer's instruction for eliminating gas smell from the vehicle by leaving windows open while vehicle was garaged and driving with the windows down following my own instincts for survival. However, the gas smell did not dissipate. I continued to smell gas when I would approach the vehicle; and the gas odor would get stronger the longer the vehicle sat. I took the vehicle back to the dealer and the 2nd leak was discovered, prompting them to replace the entire gas tank. The severe fumes have created allergy and sinus irritation issues for me; and a phobia of driving the vehicle, especially when cigarettes are thrown from vehicles in front of me. I am so afraid that my vehicle will explode with me inside of it. . . Just imagine!.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 mercedes-benz E350. The contact stated that upon inspection when the fuel tank is full, the fuel tank began to leak with no warnings. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the mechanic stated that the problem was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 52,000. The current mileage was 77,000. Jr.
For several months there has been a strong odor of gasoline after fueling the vehicle. The odor has become steadily worse and we took the vehicle to the dealership for assistance. We were told that the fuel tank was cracked and had to be replaced. When I inquired how this could have occurred, I was told it could be due to impact or trauma (which is impossible as the vehicle was not involved in any incident). Was informed that it would cost $2,300. 00 to repair vehicle. Called mb-USA and asked for assistance. Was informed that there was not a recall on the fuel tank and I would have to pay the cost. As the vehicle was unsafe, I had the work performed and received a 10% "goodwill" discount. Picked up vehicle and drove a short distance and continued to smell fuel. Called dealership and they came to pick-up. Acknowledged that they did not tighten a clamp or something. We picked it up again and the odor was persistent. Immediately called the dealership back and we subsequently traded the vehicle in. Bottom line. . . . I do not think that a fuel tank should fail on a vehicle with less than 90,000 miles. I have the old tank and believe that mb should reimbursement for the cost of the tank.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 mercedes-benz E350. The contact stated that while approaching the vehicle, she smelled an overpowering gasoline odor being emitted from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was confirmed that the fuel tank seam had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the issue and informed the contact that the dealer would be handling the repair costs however, the dealer stated that the manufacturer would handle the repair costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 74,000. Kmj.
Vehicle at 80,000 has fuel smells in and out of the passenger compartment. Had to replace the fuel tank to remedy the situation. Over $2,000 repair. Found out from the service manager at Mercedes Benz that it is a factory defect. Not good.
The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes Benz E350. The contact stated that after refueling, he noticed a strong gasoline fuel odor. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. On a second occasion, the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank sending unit needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 111,000.
After refueling, I noticed a strong odor of gasoline in the garage where I park my car. After driving the vehicle a few miles and parking in the garage, the odor was no longer there. I started noticing a pattern that whenever I refueled the vehicle, there was a strong odor of gasoline in the garage that dissipated once the vehicle was driven a few miles. Right after I started noticing the gas smell, the vehicle check engine light came on. I recently had the vehicle checked by an authorized Mercedes Benz service center who stated gas tank has crack at the top and is leaking fuel. The entire tank and all the components will need to be replaced at $3,000. I mentioned that there are a lot of other vehicles with this problem and a couple of class action lawsuits and it appears that the vehicle's gas tank is defective. The service technician refused to repair the components under any campaign or recall.
Fuel vapor leek around the fuel tank. If tank is filled beyond 3/4 a strong odor of gas permeates the cabin as well as the immediate area surrounding the car. Can not keep in an enclosed garage for fear of explosion.
Strong gasoline order, especially when tank is full. Mechanic says that gas tank pump is leaking. I hear that other owners have the same problem.
The car started to get strong gas smell specially after a full tank fill up. I have owned this car for several years and this problem started in late 2011.
Strong gasoline smell inside car. . . . Fuel sending unit under rear seat pooling with gasoline. . . . . . Occurs at fillup and smell reduces as tank empties. . . . .
Prior to incident date, I began to smell a strong gasoline smell that filled the garage. The smell got progressively worse so I took it to ewing autohaus in plano, texas on 08-31-11. The car was diagnosed as having a fuel leak and needed a new fuel tank that would cost $2000. 00 to fix. I questioned why a new fuel tank was needed since the car had never been in an accident. I was not given an answer and refused to have them fix it. I was later told that the gasoline was leaking from the top and as long as the tank was not completely full the gasoline would not leak. I took the car into Mercedes Benz park place dallas for a transmission issue in January of 2013 and I asked them to check the fuel tank and they diagnosed the fuel tank also as having a leak and needed to be replace. This repair would cost $3000. 00. I declined this repair also and stated to them that I felt that the car had a faulty fuel tank as well as a faulty transmission and was I was extremely upset having to smell gasoline inside and outside of the car if the tank was a little bit overfilled .
Strong odor of gasoline both inside and outside of the vehicle right after after refueling. After replacing multiple seals same situation we adopted a workaround not to fill the tank in its entirety to prevent the strong smell.
Gas smell/leak when tank is full.
Strong smell of gasoline mostly outside the car whenever I fill the gas tank. I never overfill. The smell exists even when I don't fill to the very top. The garage has a strong smell of gasoline whenever I fill the car with gas and park the car in the garage. I am afraid the gasoline fumes may ignite and blow-up my house.
(NHTSA action# pe12001) I recently purchased 2006 Mercedes Benz E350 in Feb 2014. I am the second owner. The first owner has kept and serviced the car regularly and I have the records. The car has never been in any crash. The date of occurrence and miles are approximate and based on the first owner's best of knowledge. I personally experienced it on March 3, 2014 and at 89122 miles. After purchasing the I filled the gas tank. I left the car in the garage overnight and when I went into the garage in the morning, my garage smelled like someone has spilled gas in the garage. I checked the garage floor under the car but there was no visible leak. I called the previous owner and he told me it is a common problem and and the smell goes away after you drive the car and use up some gas. The gas smell is so strong that I was worried to turn on any electricity. I am worried that one day it is going to cause fire in my garage. I have now experienced this twice. After researching I found that it is a common problem for every Mercedes Benz cars with 211 engines. It is sad that mercedez benz will not fix the fuel sending unit on their own. What are they waiting for? someone to die?.
