I have a smell of fuel on the rear driver-side wheel. Seems like there is a fuel leak from either the fuel filter module or it is a tank leak. I took off the rear cushion and we can see and smell fuel visibly on the left side under the seat queshon and over the fuel filter module. Seems like there was a similar problem with the 2003-2006 e class and the 2006 cls class vehicle. I think this is a safety issue as I have seen online many other customers are having a similar issue. I think it will be a fire and safety hazard and should be investigated.

Possible gas leak. . . Strong gas smell on each fuel up. Stays around until tank drops to about half full. No other signals and Mercedes Benz had me replace the gas cap. Nothing changed. Please advise.
2006 Mercedes Benz E500 - I noticed a strong smell of gas. Outside of the car you could smell gas coming from the rear end under the wheel well. Inside of the car it was coming from the back passenger seat area. I called Mercedes Benz corporate office which then directed my call to customer care. They said they would refer me to a authorized mb dealer, and their were no recalls on my vehicle at the present time. The dealer they referred me to was walter's Mercedes Benz in riverside CA. I took it in and, I received a call the next morning stating it was my fuel filter & sensor. They also found a small oil leak. Fyi I have never seen any oil leakage from my car. Then went on to tell me that the repair was not covered by any recalls and it would cost me $790 for the fuel filter replacement and $1300 for the oil seal replacement. I went online and found a voluntary emissions recall campaign #2008-020001. I mentioned this to the dealer and their response was my vehicle was not one of the 8,000 vehicles effected by this recall, even though its exactly what is wrong with my car. I proceeded to look online where I found several other complaints mention a warranty extension for the fuel tank. I called mb customer care and asked them for a copy of the extended warranty. They emailed one. In this letter it states as one of the parts covered is the fuel filter/sender. I mentioned that to walter's Mercedes Benz and they said that the extended warranty does not cover my repair. It's very evident that Mercedes Benz as well as the dealerships are not honoring these so called voluntary and extended warranties. I refused to have the repair done and now my car sits in my garage. After bringing it back from the dealer there is now oil leakage! I never had any oil leaking until I took it to walter's Mercedes Benz dealership.

I purchased my car used at 132000 miles. This was a pre existing condition that dealer didn't mention anything about, because the next day I filled the tank as it was sold to me with less than 1/4 tank, now I know why, I got a very strong odor of gas that filled my garage and smelled inside the car as well. This happens every time I fill the tank. It also sets a check engine light. Dealership I purchased the car from (not a Mercedes Benz dealership) refuses any responsibility for the problem. Check engine light code is "evaporative emission leak detected (small leak)". Also because of the issue my gas light will randomly start blinking and when I accelerate the center display beeps lights up red and said check fuel cap. Fuel cap is fine, I think it's related to the leak.

You can not put gas into the vehicle it is like there is no vent holes or something because it took me 1hour and 20 minutes to put gas in the car because the pump kept cutting off like there was air in the tank. Maybe its a flap or filter problem, whatever it is it is so frustrating trying to put gas in this car.
Driving on street--instrument cluster lights up red saying "check fuel tank cap"--drive to park turn off engine--check fuel cap -check engine light comes on-- same exact thing happened 5 days later.
I have noticed strong gasoline odors emanating from my car after refueling. I purchased a new Mercedes Benz gas cap and installed it. Filled the gas tank and gasoline odor was still very strong. I do not 'top off' when refueling. Researched issue online at benzworld. Org and discovered that the gas odor issue I am experiencing may be related to a problem being seen in numerous Mercedes Benz e-model vehicles. As advised by the other owners having this issue I detached the rear seat cushion from the car and removed the bolts from the circular access panel that covers a portion of the fuel tank on the driver's side of the vehicle. In the depresion on top of the gas tank where numerous electrical wires attach to the fuel pump I found a significant quantity of raw gasoline pooled. This presents a very unsafe situation and I am no longer willing to park the vehicle in my garage due to the potential fire hazard. The pooling of raw gasoline also represents an environmental issue due to the evaporation and creation of toxic fumes. I understand that Mercedes Benz dealers are demanding $2,000. Or more to rectify the problem by removing and replacing the gas tanks in impacted vehicles. I feel that the manufacturer of this defective component should be held responsible to recall it and replace it. I understand that the NHTSA's current investigation action no. For this issue is pe 12001.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercedes Benz E500. While parked, the contact noticed a fuel smell inside the vehicle. The check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel intermittently. There was also a warning message on the instrument panel that advised to check the filler cap. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the fuel filler cap would have to be replaced. After the repair, the contact continued to notice the strong fuel smell in and around the vehicle. There was an investigation open under NHTSA action number: pe12001 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) that could have been related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Fuel pump / sender fuel leak under rear seat. Has gas smell after getting gas. Check engine light comes on with gas cap warning light constantly, especially if add gas more than 3/4 tank. Over the years (I still own the vehicle), even with 1/2 tank gas the gas cap warning light would come on from time to time, especially in hot weather. Dealer hasn't been able to fix issue since I bought car as cpo in 2008. They told me to replace gas cap. Replaced, no impact. I opened up the rear seat and can see gas stains in the fuel sender/pump cap area with some residual gas.
