1 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 04/02/2021

Vehicle has a recall on replacement of fuel tank. Mercedes benz dealer did not want to honor the recall. When I fill car up with gas it leaks out of the tank and on the ground. Mercedes-benz dealer said I missed the time for the recall. I went to the dealership before the recall ended in 2019 spoke with the service advisor at the mckinney mercedes-benz dealership and I informed him the car was not drivable due to the braking system failure call the spc hydraulic pump. Turns out that is also a recall that is widely known. At that time the car was not drivable and then the pandemic hit so there was no need to take it up there at the time due to covid. Mercedes benz should honor this since this is a safety issue that could lead to a deadly situation if not addressed. They have been deceptive by marking this is an extended warranty issue and not a safety recall issue. They pretty much told me since I don't have my car worked on at the dealership, they don't want to help me in this situation. They mentioned had the car been serviced at the dealership and not at the independent shoo that I used I may have had a better chance at them covering the charges for this tank replacement.

Also I have had the exact same thing happen to me in the recall dated 3/15/2013. After taking a long trip up to san francisco when I got home my oil tank was leaking -there was a strong odor of gasoline coming from my backseat. I took it in to the dealer they replaced my fuel tank but before they did that they sent me on the road without fixing and no rental car. I thought I would pass out from the smell of gasoline. The dealer told me to roll my windows down when driving what? I drove my car like that for approx 1 week before the fuel tank came in. They did pay for it. I was concerned if I where to smoke in the car what would happen?.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

2005 mercedes E500 wagon has a strong fuel odor inside and outside the vehicle when the fuel tank is completely filled. This odor persists for a few days until the fuel level has gone down. This has persisted for about a year. Due to this safety issue, mb has extended the warranty on this part to repair it. Vehicle was taken to mb of plano for repair. Once the technician confirmed the fuel tank needed to be replaced, the technician followed the procedure which requires them to remove the muffler system to remove the fuel tank. The technician stated that a muffler bracket was rusted and would need to be replaced to complete the repair. The dealership notified me that this bracket is only available as a part of the complete muffler and would cost ~$600 to replace and would not be covered by the warranty. The muffler was operating properly and does not need to be replaced for any other reason. The dealership appealed the warranty and that was denied. I appealed to the mercedes executive referral team and they also denied the claim due to the age and mileage of the vehicle. If I am not willing to spend $600 to replace a perfectly good muffler, then I will have to drive a vehicle with two small children that has a live gasoline leak inside the cabin because Mercedes Benz will not replace the muffler bracket. I have been in contact with ralph at Mercedes Benz executive referral as well as the Mercedes Benz of plano service department.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E500

7 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 03/15/2016

There is a very strong smell of gasoline coming from the back seat. When I fill the gas tank the smell is so strong it fills the entire garage. When I removed the back seat I found a small puddle of gas. I first started noticing the smell in the middle of last month -(March 2016)- and continues to get worse each time I fill the gas tank.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

Upon fueling the vehicle there is a very pungent gasoline vapor smell from both the exterior & interior of the car. The smell begins to dissipate when fuel in the tank reaches 3/4-1/2 tank. The smell of fumes is enough to produce nausea, headaches, itching skin, watering eyes & even vomiting in drivers & passengers. Even with windows down & sunroof open, the smell is intolerable. The car will "sputter" when stopped at traffic lights. The vehicle currently has 105,800 miles on it. This issue was first noticed at approximately 103,000. An appointment has been scheduled with a mb dealership for inspection on 2/6/2016. I do not feel comfortable driving the vehicle due to the physical symptoms we've presented from the fumes & fear of a fire due to the potential of a faulty fuel tank/system. My 5 & 6 year old sons sit in the rear of the vehicle & can't tolerate the fumes. We've had to resort to carrying my sons asthma inhaler with us when riding in this vehicle. The vapors have directly affected his asthma & we feel the fumes are responsible for an asthma attack that has occurred when he's ridden as a passenger. Issue needs to be solved immediately at the expense of mb, extremely hazardous problem & numerous similar reports have been filed.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 03/06/2015

I felled my car up with gas at lunch 12 noon and when I got off work at 5pm the gas fumes were so strong I could breathe in my car. I tuck it to south bay Mercedes Benz and was told that the gas tank has a leak and the gas had leaked in to the cabin behind the back set of my car and that the repairs would be covered by the warranty. It¿s been over 2 weeks and they have no eta on when my car will be fixed. I have a loner but I check online and found that there are a lot of people with this same problem.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 01/12/2015

I have had this problem for a while now. When I fill up my fuel tank there is a drastic smell of gas. I believe this is a safety issue. I had to leave my car out on the street in fear my water heater when igniting would set off a explosion. I am sure mb knows of this situation since I have seen numerous remarks and instances on just this subject. I would hope that mb will address this problem. I took it to the dealer and indeed they said that the fuel sending unit has a crack on top allowing the fuel to leak when filled up to the full mark. Thank you advance in reporting this to mercedes.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

Benz E500/55k miles. I have had two major safety issues with the car. One being fuel tank related and the second sbc pump failure while driving. On the first, too little too late, so many years after the incident and purchase of the car, Mercedes Benz has sent a letter covering the repair and parts for 15 years. I think that in itself is an offense and a crime. On the second issue, sbc pump Mercedes Benz refused to give me in detail the effect of failing sbc pump on other parts of the car or the effect of failed sbc pump. More importantly, service managers are telling customers that they are expecting all models equipped with sbc pump to come to the shop. Now that the 10 years is up in most cars and out of warranty. That is a scam when the dealer knows all these customers will come to the shop (because it cannot be fixed in any auto shop) thereby taking advantage of a safety issue. How do car manufacturers get away with things like this and how dealers get away with things like this. The right thing to do is extend the warranty on sbc pump to 15 years just like they did in fuel tank, that way dealer won¿t take advantage and customers have peace of mind and won¿t compromise on safety. Even that is a slap on the wrist compared to the offense and crime.

I complained to the new jersey mercedes head quarter, they told me to go dealer for diagnose, dealer told me to replace the tank, which costs about $ 4000 ,00 there is defective design of the location of fuel tank, that is located under the back seats, if it emitts fouls smell that means leaking gas , if any passenger happen to be smoker, that can catch fire and cause death and injuries, they have very very defective design and do not admit product liability problem. All these cars should be recalled .

20 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 09/02/2014

When I full my gas tank, I get a strong odor of gasoline both inside the car and outside. Inside the vehicle the gasoline smell is throughout the car and smells strongest in the driverside rear seat location. Outside the vehicle the strongest smell of gasoline seems to be coming from the driverside rear door/wheel well. The smell seems to last until the gas level goes below 3/4 of a tank of gasoline. This happens everytime I full the gasoline tank.

21 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 07/23/2014

On 7/23/14, I noticed a strong odor of gasoline emanating from the inside and outside of my car after refueling. I purchased a certified pre-owned w211 2006 Mercedes Benz E500 from mercedes-benz greenway. I researched the issue online and discovered that the gas odor issue I was experiencing may be related to a problem being seen in numerous Mercedes Benz e-model vehicles. As advised by the other owners having this issue, I detached the rear seat cushion from the car and removed the bolts from the circular access panel that covers a portion of the fuel tank on the driver's side of the vehicle. In the depresion on top of the gas tank where numerous electrical wires attach to the fuel sending unit, I found a significant quantity of raw gasoline pooled. This presented a very unsafe situation and I was no longer willing to park the vehicle in my garage due to the potential fire hazard. The pooling of raw gasoline also represents an environmental issue due to the evaporation and creation of toxic fumes. I took photos of the raw gasoline sitting on the fuel sending unit. Mercedes-benz of sugarland demanded $1,022. 57 to rectify the problem by removing and replacing both fuel sending units/pumps in my vehicle. Mercedes-benz of sugarland did not return my old parts after I requested them. I feel that the manufacturer of this defective component should be held responsible to recall it and replace it. I understand that the NHTSA's current investigation action numbers for this issue are pe-12001 and ea-13003. . Read more...

24 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

I have been noticing a very strong odor of gasoline coming out of the driver side passenger seat in the back, outside of the car. The order is in the inside of the car as well, but it is most noticeable outside of the vehicle. It generally happens when I fill up the gas tank and then dissipates after the gas tank is around 3/4 to 1/2 full. I am really concerned about this issue not only, because it is affecting my gas milage, but because it is risking not only my life but the lives of my passengers. I am sure that the inhalation of gasoline vapors is not good for anyones health and not to mention the dangers of the vapors in the presence of any kind of flame. I did some research on the issue, and I have found that this is not an isolated event. This has lead me to believe that this is a design flaw of mbusa. My research has also showed me that mbusa has been aware of the issues for quite some time, but is insisting on its costumer pay the repairs that range anywhere from $300 to $1500. I would completely understand, the customers accepting the responsibility for the repairs, if mbusa provided a product that was not already flawed in its inception.

25 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

I filled up my car & noticed a gas smell I was on my way to atlanta for work I had to inhale strong gas fumes for most of my travel. When I got there I took my car to a shop & they discovered my gas tank had a leak and gas was leaking near back seat they gave a me an estimate of about 2500 to fix I was told that this had been a known issue for mercedes but no recall yet which I don't understand. This is very dangerous not only the inhalation of the fumes & gas leaking in a car with electrical wiring & parts that get extremely hot. I don't understand why there hasn't been a recall to fix this since mercedes are aware that the car was manufactured properly. Why should we have to pay to repair poor manufactured products that put our lives in danger.

34 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

One week after a visit to palm springs, CA. , where the average daily temperature was about 116, I noticed a smell of gasoline after refueling. The following 3 weeks, the odor worsened when refueled. This a. M. , I pulled the rear seat and cover plate on the left side and found pooled gasoline in the cavity provided for the sending unit atop the fuel tank. As a leak in this area had been addressed by the dealer in 2011, I felt this was an "on going " issue that should be addressed by the mb dealer. As of this writing, I've not found a sympathetic ear at my local mb dealer, yet I must correct the problem as soon as I "burn off" 50% of the gasoline so as to make the repair safer. My home has the gas water heater located in the garage and with liquid fuel present atop the tank, I'm forced to leave my E500 outside! I view this as a safety and, in California, an epa issue and it should be dealt with accordingly by state and federal agencies.
