When filling the car with gasoline to a full tank, there is a strong smell of fuel that is very strong the next day. I have read in forums that this is a common problem with this model and that mb knows about this but is not doing anything about it. Is there a class action law suit on this matter? I bought this vehicle used. Am I protected under emissions laws or not?.

After filling the gas tank, I parked the car in my attached garage the next day the gas fumes were so strong inside my basement that I called my plumber, thinking I had a gas leak from the furnace. Then I went into my garage, and the gas smell was overwhelming. When I took the vehicle to Mercedes Benz, they did a diagnostic and determined the fuel sensor was bad, along with cracked inner tank module. I had to replace all the associated parts (cable harness, auxiliary pump, bracket, seal ring, etc. Parts: $710. 13 and labor: $496. 80 = 1206. 93. This issue should be reviewed as a manufacturer defect. I've had many automobiles, and never did I have this headache. And I certainly would not expect this from this car. Mercedes benze needs to own up to these defaults!!! additionally, my battery died at the same time - another parts: $284. 05, labor: $207. 00.
Fuel odor after filling the gas tank, in the passenger compartment and around the vehicle.
There is a strong odor of unburnt fuel coming from my car after filling up the gas tank. I can't tell at this point where exactly the smell is coming from. I do not see a puddle of fuel on the ground or anything like that. The smell is very strong; I can smell it throughout my whole 2 car garage. I am very worried what part of the fuel system has failed.
About a year ago I started noticing a strong gas smell after filling my tank. I recently decided to research it and found that this is a widespread and commonly known problem with the e series w211 mercedes cars and a serious design flaw with the fuel sending unit/gas tank. My daughter drives this car now, and I have serious concerns for her inhaling carcinogenic fumes while using it. I would like to know what resolution can be achieved with mb USA concerning this matter. I see that at class action lawsuit was submitted but don't see the outcome. That was in 2012.
After filling gas tank, whiled stopped, there is a strong odor of gasoline evident. The small seems to originate near the rear passenger side. Sometime it's detectable inside the car, but mostly it's readily apparent outside the vehicle. After driving the car for 10-30 miles, the smell goes away.

This vehicle has a very strong gasoline smell after I fill the tank. This smell is concentrated on the driver side by the rear wheel. I do not have the money to repair or diagnose the vehicle. Although, mercedes has issued an extended warranty to 15 years unlimited miles for "covered fuel tank components". The mercedes dealerships are not able to tell me what the severity or the specific reason for my fuel leak/smell without paying a large diagnostic fee/ w no guarantee of warrantied service. I would like them to share specific information about this problem with me without charging diagnostic fee.
Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001 after filling vehicle gas tank, vehicle has a very strong fuel odor inside and outside the vehicle. Fuel is leaking around sending unit at gas tank, and after speaking with other vehicle owners, this is a common problem. Due to the leak, vehicle cannot be kept in the garage until fuel level reaches 3/4 tank. Also, the smell is so bad inside the vehicle after fill up, it is dangerous to drive.
I have a 2004 mercedes E500 and after filling the car with gas I began to notice the strong smell of gasoline coming from the vehicle after leaving it parked in my garage. As the vehicle was driven and the fuel fell below 1/2 tank the smell got less and less. However, I just filled the tank again the smell is stronger than before.
When filling gas tank to full, car smells of gas inside and outside especially when parked in garage.

There is a strong fuel odor inside the cabin of the vehicle. The odor is so strong sometimes that it gives me a headache. I know this can't be good for my health and I've read that other people are having the same type of problem with this model car. This problem usually occurs after refilling the gas tank and lasts about a week at a time.
Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001. There is a distinct fuel smell after filling up the tank. Do not smell inside vehicle but do smell after the car is put away inside garage. No sign of leakage under the car (puddling or drips). Goes away after fuel tank is less than full. There is no smell if you only fill to 3/4.
I have a 2006 E500 sedan. Just before the three year warranty expired, we notice a strong fuel smell in the car. We had a mercedes dealer, check it out and the serviceman said he found the problem with a seal on the fuel pump panel below the left rear seat. Said he had the problem fixed. This was the area of the problem but he didn't stop the leak. After the warranty expired we had the car serviced and the dealer found a bayonet fitting to a overflow cannister disconnected. The leak problem still persist and I have resorted to not filling the car up with gas. I have had to rip out the sound proofing blanket under the rear seat because of fuel odors. ( it got soaked. ) the seat foam got wet in the area just above the fuel access panel. Is there a seal (o-ring or otherwise in the fuel tank o cap in that access area) should I take the cap off and look for a burr on the tank? what torque value or how tight should this cap be screwed on the tank?.
After filling my car with fuel, I have notice a strong odor of gas fumes in my garage and inside my car. But I don't see any leaks on the floor. After the gas tank drops to 3/4 of a tank, the smell of fumes goes away. This has been going on for several months. Also, the gas gauge isn't accurate. I found out, this is a typical problem with the e class 2003-2008. I believe this is a safety issue and that mercedes should repair it ASAP. Thanks.
Very strong odor of gasoline especially after filling gas tank. Tank is not topped off at filling and a few days after filling the odor is gone. Reappears every time tank is filled. No visible leak under vehicle.
Vehicle has a strong smell of fuel after filling the tank. The dealer replaced the fuel pump support on 02/05/2013 but the problem was not solved. The dealer replaced the fuel tank on 03/01/2013. This appeared to solve the problem. The total cost of the repairs was $381. 41 + $ 807. 35 = $1,188. 76.
Strong odor of fuel inside vehicle after filling the fuel tank at station. Smell went away after approximately 50 miles.
After filling up the tank, there would be very noticeable gas vapors especially in enclosed spaces like the garage. At half a tank, the gas smell goes away. I decided to take it to the mercedes dealer. The advisor asked me to sit down before he delivered the bad news. The gas tank has warped! this is a garage kept luxury car with only 42,000 miles. How can its gas tank warp I asked him and he said it has already happened to 8 other cars in the dealership. There was nothing I could do to prevent it from happening. Mercedes will not help any and it will cost $2,550 to change the tank to solve the problem. He said he can bring it down to $2,300 after discounts. I hope Mercedes Benz steps up to the plate to address this critical issue.
After filling my car with fuel, I have notice a strong odor of gas fumes in my garage which smells throughout my entire home and inside my car. But I don't see any leaks on the floor. After the gas tank drops to 3/4 of a tank, the smell of fumes goes away. This has been going on for a very long time. I believe this is a safety issue and that mercedes should repair it ASAP. Thanks. Also the fuel cap sensor constantly stays blinking as if there is something wrong with the connection to the fuel tank opening, every time I re fuel. I have even had the fuel cap replaced with a new one and the sensor in the car still comes on every day.
Very strong fuel odor at driver's side rear wheel well after filling fuel tank. No leaking fuel detected. Odor so strong that I am not able to leave the vehicle in the garage due to safety concerns.
After completely filling up my fuel tank and drove away, I was overwhelmed by a strong fuel fumes. When I arrived at my residence, I found that some fuel had leaked onto the ground. I went online and found all over the internet that other owners of this class of vehicle have had similar problems related to the fuel sending units located under the back seat. When I looked under the seat the pad had fuel through to the foam under the seat. I allowed it to air out, and called mbz as I noticed that dot had filed a report in 04/2012 in regards to this problem in all w211 e class mercedes in conjunction with the recall for the e55 2008-020001. I called mbz and they stated that they couldn't do anything about it no matter how documented by other owners. We have a two year old that sits in a car seat, this is clearly unacceptable if a known issue on behalf of mercedes.
After filling the fuel tank last September I noticed a very strong gasoline smell in the cabin of the vehicle. This happened 2 more times before bringing the vehicle in to my mechanic. He explained that there was a leak at the top of the fuel tank.
There is a strong fuel smell in the vehicle after filling up gas tank. Mercedes benz dealer found the issue associated to left side fuel sending unit, which seem to be a recurrent issue with this model in mercedes. Dealer requires $875. 34 to fix the issue. I have contacted mbusa to see if they can help with this repair. In 2008 there was a voluntary recall #2008-020001,on some e and cls class for 03-06 vehicles, however I was told my car VIN is not part of this recall. Web forums of Mercedes Benz owners are filled with same complaint for all e class models with chassis w211. Please investigate this issue. I understand there is an open NHTSA case pe12-001 that may be related to my complaint. Thank you for your prompt attention. This is my second mercedes w211 model vehicle with the same issue.
After filling up tank with 93 octane gasoline fuel smell persist until tank at 3/4 of capacity. Problem has repeated all times when tank filled up.
In June 2012 I was experiencing a strong gas odor upon filling my tank. Over the course of the next few months I visited 3 shops trying to find the issue with the odor. The first two claimed there was no leak in my tank and they were not sure of the problem. The last shop said there was no leak but could smell the odor in the vehicle. At this point it cost me, just less than $ 2000. , to fix issues related to the smell. # replaced cannister vent control solenoid. # aux sending unit # wiring harness fuel tank pressure sensor # wiring harness for vent control solenoid. I would not have fixed the problem, but the smell of fuel caused major concern, especially driving my children around. This did solve the problem. I read a newspaper article from the NHTSA today and it was talking about a leak in the tanks, as stated above, I do not believe this to be the case. Would I have recourse after the fact from mercedes from this obvious defect ? 2005 mercedes E500.
Reference NHTSA action #pe12001 last year I began to smell gasoline vapors when my mb E500 gas tank is 100% full. The smell finally goes away after using about 1/4 of the tank. The gasoline smell is so bad, I need to leave my garage door partially open to help remove the smell. Currently there are no signs of gasoline leaking on the ground, but the smell of gasoline is very strong both inside and outside the car. I've resolved myself to only filling up my tank to 75% full each time I re-fuel. I cannot find the leak or determine the gernal area around the tank which is leaking. This is a serious safety issue with the generation of gas vapors in a confimed space (inside the car or garage).
After filling up gas tank gas started to drip from the gas tank to the floor.
I own 2004 mercedes E500 4matic one day after filling gas tank with fuel notice strong smell came from driver rear side of the car. I drove to my garage and investigate this problem. The sending fuel unit located under rear seat drivers side has a crack from which fuel leaking out. Called to Mercedes Benz of USA several times, but they refused fix this problem. This is the serious safety issue.
I started smelling a stong gasoline smell after filling the gas tank on this car. After the car was driven for about 50 miles, the smell would go away. Today, may 16, 2012, I took the car to a denver mecedes dealer to ask about the problem. Dealer reported that there was a crack in the fuel tank, next to the top left fuel pump. This seems to be the same problem related to your investigation on pe 12-001. The dealer asked for $2000 to repair this problem. I am waiting for the repair pending this investigation and mercedes response.
After filling my car with gas a strong odor of gasoline is present. You smell the odor from both inside and outside of the car. After the gas goes below about 3/4 of a tank the smell is no longer present. I have read several online complaints of other owners of this vehicle having the same issues.
I noticed a strong smell of gasoline after filling the fuel tank. Smell is very strong both inside and outside the vehicle. This occurs every time I fill the tank. Sometimes fuel also leaks onto ground underneath the car. Took to mercedes dealer for diagnosis. They report that seals around 2 fuel tank covers have failed. The repair involves replacing the entire fuel tank. I have not made the repair due to high cost. I have learned that this is happening in many mercedes e class vehicles in same age range.
