Tl the contact owns a 2007 Mercury Mariner. While the contact's son was driving the vehicle, the transmission slipped and went into other gears. When the vehicle was in neutral, it shifted into drive on its own. On another occasion, the contact's son stated that the vehicle felt as if it were dragging after it jumped. In addition, "overdrive" appeared on the control panel the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was then towed to another independent mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to call NHTSA. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 152,000.

2 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 12/05/2013

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission slipped and caused the vehicle to suddenly decelerate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission was damaged due to defective ball bearings. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The vehicle was returned to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 58,000.

3 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 10/16/2009

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner. While driving approximately 65 to 70 mph on normal road conditions; the transmission slipped with excessive vibration. The engine began to rev and the rpm's were high. Suddenly, pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal, however, the response was minimal. The contact was able to drive onto the emergency lane and resume normal operation. An authorized dealer confirmed that the failure was contributed to the transmission over drive piston. The vehicle was repaired. The failures occurred whenever 5th and 6th gear were engaged. The identical failures occurred on two separate occasions after the service repairs were performed on the vehicle. In addition, the vehicle rolled while stationary on an incline. The contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. The failure and current mileages were 13,088.

4 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

2006 Mercury Mariner transmission slipped at 4,000 miles. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for service. The manufacturer approved a brand new transmission to be installed.
