My 17 year old son was driving his Mercury Milan premier with only 96,000 miles on the road when the steering assist failure indicator came on. He pulled over and turned the car off. He called me on the phone and I instructed him to turn the car back on. At that point he lost all power steering on the car. He is lucky that this didn't happen on the highway or in the winter. I did some research and found out that this is a known problem on the electronic steering assist. Ford has issued recalls on the 2011 but 2010. The part from the dealer is 1,155 plus the labor will cost around 2100 dollars. Shame on Ford for not recalling the 2010! safety should come first!! I'm filing this report with the NHTSA as this is a dangerous failure.

Lose of power steering completely while driving on highway. Service advancetrac light comes on as it happens. I luckily avoided the car in front of me.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Mercury Milan. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle lost power steering ability and 'power steering assist failure' appeared on the instrument panel. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle for a few minutes. The contact restarted the vehicle and drove home. The contact also stated that the failure occurred two other times. The vehicle was taken to germain Lincoln (13303 tamiami trail, n naples, 34110) where it was diagnosed that the power steering control module needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 57,700.

My power steering assist warning and advance trac system fault warning came on randomly for months. When they would, I'd lose power steering, but could turn the car off and on and it would reset and work fine. During those months I took it into the dealer numerous times, but nothing could be found so they would clear the codes and told me repeatedly it was a sensor misfire. I had read reviews of numerous 2010 models having the same issues but never being recalled. Last week my power steering assist fault light came on and I lost power steering completely. I was able to get it into a new auto repair place who diagnosed the entire electric power steering system as having malfunctioned and had to replace the rack and pinion, costing me over $2000. The 2011-2013 models were recalled for this exact reason. The 2010 should be as well. If I had been on backroads driving for my job, which I often am, when this had gone out, this could have been a real safety issue.
Power steering assist and traction control light came on while driving and lost power steering causing major unsafe condition. Was able to drive vehicle but with great amount of difficulty turning the steering wheel. Took vehicle a shop where they got a code of u3000-96 there is a recall for 2011 Mercury Milan's 15v340000 it covers vehicles made 9/2010-2/2012 my Milan was built 3/2010 yet not included in this recall even though many other owners have claimed the specific power steering assist feature failed in their cars as well. What is ones recourse as there is clearly a major safety problem with this component: thank you.
My 20 year old son was driving our 2010 on the street when all of a sudden the car lost its power steering. He had a very difficult time steering the car and was very close to crashing the vehicle. He was in a high traffic area at the time of thei issue. He could have injured himself or died because of this problem, he was able to, with great difficulty, get the car off of the road. He was very lucky!! this is a serious safety issue. The vehicle had 2 lights that displayed: 1. Service power steering now and 2. Service advancetrac. It is still displaying on the dash and there is no power steering, therefore the vehicle can not be driven. . It is my understanding that this is a very expensive repair!! this car is only 8 years old and is in excellent condition. I have been told that the 2011 Milan had the same problem and that there was a recall for the issue. I have also been told that the 2010 has the exact same system (electric power steering) as the 2011, but it was not recalled. How can that be?? is it less of a safety issue based only on the year? so it's ok for 2010 drivers to be injured but not the 2011 owners. I am a single mother and do not know how to deal with problem. Please look into it ASAP.
Electronic steering rack and pinion caused car to lose steering. Some 2011 models have previously had this concern. First the abs brake started pulsating than check brake light came on and than car lost the power steering. Dealership diagnostics show the electronic steering rack and pinion has stopped working.
Lost power steering while driving down the highway and I am a 77 year old women! I thank god that I did not have to go around anything because I would have hit it, being unable to move my steering wheel with ease! the 2011 Mercury Milan has a recall for this problem but my car was made 7 days before the recall so it is not under this recall #15s518.
While driving, it became extremely hard to turn the steering (lost all power steering capability). Could not make turns and almost forced into on coming traffic.
While in process of a turn the vehicle lost power steering abilities. It started to retract from the turn then lost the ability causing the vehicle to go off at an angle and hit a parked vehicle. 2 days prior to the accident the it was discovered that there might have been an issue that would need addressing because it felt like the vehicle lost power steering briefly. After the accident we discovered a recall for power steering problems on the vehicle but my vehicle wasn't part of that recall. There was a police report filed and a claim. We don't have the paperwork yet as this just happened. I have included pictures from the accident.
While driving down the road loses all power steering there was a recall on the 2011 Mercury Milan which have all the same parts why wouldn't they recall the 2010 Milans? this has happened 3 times where the power steering will just go out than when I shut the car off and restart it works again. There is no way I would trust my wife or child driving this car.
Well, there have been lots of problems with my Mercury. On my trips to tennessee to care for my elderly parents, on a return trip from tennessee to florida, my car lost power steering and slowed to a crawl. I was able to manipulate my car to the side of the road where it was not overheating but would not increase in speed past 20 mph. I was able to take an exit and find an autoparts store and have the engine checked, the belt had come completely off without being broken. I had to have this replaced. I have experienced a total loss of coolant when the hose broke loose. Also, my problems with the wear and replacement of brake pads and rotors very, very frequently. This seems to be a major issue with this car. This morning, 12/8/2015, on my way to work the wrench light came on and I noticed my car jumping when slowing and changing to the lower gears and also upon accelerating, the jumping also occurred. I have contacted my mechanic and am awaiting a response.

As I was making a right turn at a rural intersection I lost power steering. I was going less than 20 mph, turning into a parking lot for my job. A warning light stated "service power steering system" and "service advanctrac". At the end of the day, the warning message changed to say "service power steering system now". It's going to the dealer tomorrow. There needs to be a recall on this problem.
I was driving to work and a light came on which I have not seen before as well as two console messages that read "service power steering now" and "service advancetrac. " my steering became noticeably heavier as I drove and then completely lost power steering as I pulled into a parking lot. I had to stop in the middle of the parking lot and slowly with great effort I was able to angle the car into a parking spot. There were no noises. I towed the vehicle to a near by auto shop and they diagnosed a faulty electric power steering and quoted me $1750 for repair.
As I was making a right turn at a rural intersection I lost power steering. I was going possibly 25 mph. I went into the left lane but there was no vehicle there. If there had been I would have hit it. A warning came on "service advance trac & service power steering now" this also happened about 2 years ago when I was stopped. At that time a Ford tech reprogrammed a module & it has been ok til now.
Advancetrac and power steering warning lights came on; lost all power steering. This is the third occurrence of the same problem. Dealer previously replaced a fuse, then the power steering unit. Will take it to the dealer for the third repair.
