37 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

I drove my 2005 Mercury Monterey to take my daughter to school this morning and came right home. About two hours later, had to leave and started car. I put car into reverse and nothing happened. Without any warning what so ever, my car no longer appears to have a working transmission. No matter what gear it is in, nothing at all happens. Car has just been towed to mechanic to be looked at first thing in the morning. Car has just over 53,000 miles. After reading the numerous other victims of this transmission problem, I am thankful it at least happened at my own home rather than being out somewhere with my kids in tow - or worse off while driving! still doesn't make this any better of a situation to be dealing with.

While driving our 2004 Mercury Monterey the transmission quit working right in the middle of the road. I was able to get to the side of the road with out incident. The van only has 78,000 miles on it and would expect more than that on a major component. I'm still making payments on a van that doesn't work. To get it fixed is between $1500 to 2500.

44 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 12/12/2009

Took the kids to the movies and drove around town for a good part of the day. About an hour after getting home I had to go to the store I got into the van and started the engine the rpms went up to about 4k. I backed out of the driveway and put the van into drive. The rpms went up again to about 4k again. After driving for about 20 feet the van lost power, then engine was still on but the van would not move. I stepped on the gas and the engine turned off. Per the Ford dealer it appears to be a transmission problem that is currently being investigated and might not be covered by my extended warranty.

46 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

Was driving 2004 Mercury Monterey premier minivan when suddenly while in drive gear lost all drive power to the wheels. Luckily there was an out to pull safely off the road, into a driveway. If this would've occurred 1/4 mile further in the roadway there wouldn't have been an "out" as this is a very curvy mountainous road where few places to safely exit the highway. Potentially there could've been terrible injuries or worse w/4 passengers in the vehicle including my precious 2yr old daughter and handsome 4 year old boy. There was a complete loss of power talk about having no control of a situation. Very scary and nerve racking. This is definitely a safety concern that needs to be a recall. This could've been a whole lot worse. First thing I did when I gt towed home was checked internet for problems with tranny and the article came up about nhtsb probe about this exact description so I felt I had to make a complaint. Hope this enough description.

49 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 10/06/2009

My wife was driving home in our 2004 Mercury Monterey when all of a sudden it lost power to the power train. The car remained on, but would not go anywhere when the gas was pressed while in gear. Luckily she was not far from home and we were able to push it until we could get it to our home and call a tow truck. I am more than relieved that we purchased the used vehicle warranty from the dealership we purchased the vehicle from. It appears the transmission will be fully covered under this warranty. I noticed many other blogs and a recall investigation filed for this problem, so I thought I would report one more occurrence of this problem for this vehicle.

58 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 07/28/2009

My wife was driving on highway 100 w in ellicott city with my kid last evening and suddenly the minivan starting DE-accelerating. She pressed on the gas pedal but the car was not moving. Unfortunately, due to heavy traffic, she could not get the car to the shoulder and the car came to halt on the highway. Miraculously, there was a cop who noticed the problem and helped her to get out of the car. We called towing service, who took the car to the dealership. Upon diagnosis, the technician found that something in the transmission broke. There was no signs of transmission problem with the car. The vehicle is Mercury Monterey, 4 years old (2004 make, bought new in Jan 2005) and has 50,000 miles on it. We need department of vehicle to investigate in transmission problems with 2004 Mercury Monterey's as it will cause fatalities on the road. Fortunately, I can see my family but this horrific incident can happen with others. Ford, should be liable to pay for the transmission repair/replacement. Dealership provided an estimate of 3,300 dollars to replace the transmission which is unfair for a consumer in this tough economy.

59 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

60 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 02/17/2009

My wife and two young daughters were driving to the post office. They stopped at a light and when my wife tried to accelerate after the green light changed there was no response. . . The engine just roared. It was fortunate they were on a slope so my wife was able to cost off the roadway. This would have been a terribly dangerous situation if she was stuck in the middle of a busy road where a rear end collision could easily happen. There was no warning of this incident and at 57000 miles no reason it should have happened.

61 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

2004 Mercury Monterey van with 64,408 miles, driven less than four years, lost its transmission as I was driving down the road. I could only coast to the shoulder. Luckily I was not injured. . . .

62 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 12/22/2008

My wife was driving to a doctor's appointment with and for my 4 month old daughter when as she was accelerating from a highway stop light, the van seemed to shift into neutral. She luckily was able to coast to the side of the highway and into a parking lot. The gears don't shift and there is no movement forward or backward. We had it towed to a Ford dealership and they inspected it, saying it needed a new transmission. There were no signs there was an issue prior to this (lights, warnings, etc. ). I haven't spoken with Ford yet, but from what others are saying, it looks like this is something they are turning a blind eye to. Seeing as how no one has had a complaint yet involving an injury or death, I wonder what will happen when someone does. . . Ford will be getting a nice lawsuit with all these records.

63 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 12/15/2008

The transmission on my van suddenly and without warning let go as I was trying to accelerate onto a major highway in florida. Thank god I had the sense to get it off the road and spare a potential disaster with my five children in the van. There was no warning signs prior to the sudden loss of power and it's very upsetting thinking of what could have happened.

64 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 08/30/2008

My wife was driving on sr528 at night in our 2005 Mercury Monterey coming home from work. While driving over the indian river bridge, the engine revved up on her and acted like it was in neutral. There was no warning whatsoever which placed her in a very dangerous situation. Every gear (reverse, d, 3, 1) acts like it's in neutral. Now the minivan is sitting at a gas station while we wait to find out the cost of repair. The van has 57000 miles and we've had it less than 3 years. This is apparently a common failure happening with the 2004 and 2005 Ford/Mercury minivans. Is Ford waiting for someone to get hurt or even worse before they do something? I'm extremely disappointed being a 7 time Ford purchaser.

65 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

67 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

Driving home from a family road trip, car began slipping and went into neutral. Will not go into drive or reverse. No accident, but very close calls during stop and go traffic on the way home. Very stressful situation for a 2004 Mercury Monterey with 69,000 miles on it.
