36 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/05/2011

Came out one morning to discover the rear hatch had a crack around the emblem of my 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. Car was parked in driveway and was not hit or involved in an accident. Started noticing that every Mercury Mountaineer of the same body type had similar cracks in the same location. Contacted Ford but did not have VIN #. Eventually contacted Ford again with VIN # and was told there was no recall and that Ford was not accepting any responsibility . I told Ford that it is an obvious defect to no avail. I will never buy another Ford product if this is how they treat their customers. This should be a recall and Ford should repair this defect. The value of my car has decreased because of this. I got a $500. 00 estimate to repair it but was told it would probbably happen again.

37 Body problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/26/2011

The Mountaineer is a 2005. I love the vehicle but, the paint is almost gone on the hood and is starting to bubble in other area. This is my daily car, has been garage kept until may 2018. I cannot think of anything which would have caused this.

38 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/02/2011

We have experienced two well known issues with the explorer/mountaineer. The body panel on the back hatch is cracked in the middle and Friday we had the spark plug blow out of the head/socket stripping the threads out to the point that the common repair kit used for these instances won't work and the only solution is a replacement head which is quoted at a $3500 job and the vehicle is only worth about $5700. I understand Ford accepts no responsibility for this engine/head defect despite the fact that it has occured on factory tightened plugs.

39 Body problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

(day and mileage are approximate values). 2006 Mercury Mountaineer awd premier edition. In excess rainfall events, water leaks thru sunroof and down thru roof center lighting console. I've taken it to numerous places to have it evaluated. Upon receiving it from a used car dealer (respectable reputation) the sunroof leaked a day or two later. Took back to purchasing dealership and they removed entire sunroof assembly, cleaned and replaced all seals. The next rainstorm occurred and I was told to park downhill because there are very thin tubes and they clog easily, causing the water to pool up and leak thru, the center lighting console. I've even asked Ford and was told bring it to my local dealership for repair. Dealership says repair will be my responsibility, and also says it may not 100% repair since they would do same services the previous establishments performed (remove, clean tracks and tubes, reseal).

41 Body problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

Bought used in wa state and live in NJ now. After purchasse it rained one night and next morning entire center console, overhead lights were all wet inside. Upon further investigation determined leak was sunroof. Notified dealer and they had a glass specialist remove the entire assembly and thoroughly clean. Replaced seal with new one and claimed no more leakage. A few days later it rained again (wa well known for always raining) and again the leak was present. The dealer's response was now 'park your vehicle with the front end downhill. There are tiny slots that direct the water down the corner pillars and apparently clog easily. So parking with front end downhill will relieve the water before it can pool up to leak.

42 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

2004 Mercury Mountaineer, rear hatch molding with Mercury emblem. Two winters ago the molding cracked after a very cold freeze. Vehicle was under warranty and the entire hatch had to be replaced. Dealer had vehicle 3 or 4 days as new hatch was sent out to a local body shop to be painted, matching the vehicle color. Now, the same molding has begun DE-laminating from the hatch. Dealer states hatch has to be replaced and will cost $1000. 00.

44 Body problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

The car would have a warning display that a door was ajar and we would check all the doors and re-close them all and the warning would still appear. Then we would check the lift gate window on the back and re-close it and the display would go away, but the lift gate was closed the whole time before. It constantly does this and now the lift gate has a crack in it.

48 Body problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/26/2011

I have a 2005 Mountaineer that has a crack in the plastic below the rear window that goes around the Mercury emblem. This was noticed in January of 2011. This vehicle was not involved in an accident. Since then I have noticed four other Mercury Mountaineers with the same crack.

50 Body problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/24/2010

Automatic transmission- this transmission is horrible a few times I noticed the severe noise and jerk when I went to reverse. I thought perhaps it was me. On christmas eve I went to pull away from stop light and car started to accelerate then slowed down I gave it a little gas and it jerked me so hard it hurt my neck (which is still bothering me today). The od light came on and check transmission. Repair cost $2,7000, basically everything went bad. After hearing from numerous people this is a problem that Ford is aware of. They even went so far as to correct it for future models but has yet to perform a recall on 2005 Mountaineers and explorers. As Ford was aware of this problem corrected it for future models they should be liable and a recall notice should be forthcoming. Anyone who has experienced this should get full refund of monies paid. Now to address the cracking around the Mercury emblem on the lift gate. Ford is aware of this problem and has changed it for future models, but instead of stepping up and correcting pass models they sweep it under the rug. A full investigation into both of these concerns as with transmissions someone could easily be fatally injured.

51 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/09/2010

The rear panel is cracked around the logo of my Mercury Mountaineer. I see this on most other Mountaineers and explorers from this generation and Ford has done nothing to remedy it.

52 Body problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

My mother was at her parents' house and opened the rear glass portion of the lift gate. Upon doing so, one of the lift gate cylinders detached from the glass. She went inside to get her father to come outside and see if he could fix the issue. When he attempted to lift the glass, it shattered instantly leaving cuts all over his body. I called Ford about this issue and was told that there was nothing that they could do about this because the recall that addresses this issue had already been performed on the vehicle (NHTSA campaign id number: 01i010000).

53 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

There is a crack from the bottom of the rear window right by the Mercury emblem, all the way down. I've seen nearly identical cracking on many other Mountaineers and explorers. I see a rather large number of the same complaints on several websites. Obviously this is a defect that could result in injuries and needs to be recalled for safety reasons. Mercury/Ford needs to stand behind their product.

54 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

The back lift gate is cracked from the bottom of the window, around the left side of the Mercury emblem, and all the way down. I've noticed the same cracking on almost every other Mountaineer on the roads, and I see a huge number of the same complaint on the NHTSA website. Obviously this is a defect and needs to be recalled.

55 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/31/2010

Rear back panel cracked. Was parked in garage for 2 days, temp was -15f low/22f high. Fine one day, cracked rear panel (around the rear hatch window). Dealer states no recall, see this all the time. $500 to fix.

56 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/17/2009

The back lift gate is cracked from the bottom of the window, around the side of the Mercury emblem, all the way down. I've noticed the same cracking on almost every other Mountaineer on the roads, and I see a huge number of the same complaint on the NHTSA website. Obviously this is a defect and needs to be recalled.

57 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/08/2009

Purchased the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer in 2007. We only drive the car locally for school and work and within 30 days of purchase, the car would not go into reverse. Was told the transmission was slipping and made the dealership/warranty pay for $1600 repair. Since then the check engine light comes on every 3 months. We get check fuel cap message, replaced that twice (last one from actual Ford dealership) because they told us it wasn't the original from the car. Car leaks water through the rear window/roof seal and now my light stays on when I lock the car and it tells me every time we get in the car that there is a door ajar no matter if we get out and reclose all 4 doors and back door. R&r wheel speed sensor and ball joints had to be replaced 8/29/08 for $555. Just recently had my transmission go out again (12/8/09) and had to have complete rebuild of a Mercury transmission which cost us another $4000. It still slightly vibrates going between 30 and 40 miles per hour. Also the back hatch has cracked completely down through the logo. Our Ford dealer charges $200 just to look at the vehicle!.

58 Body problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/11/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that there was a crack in the rear lift-gate, right down the middle and around the manufacturers emblem. The crack stretched from the top to the bottom of the lift-gate. Due to the crack being located near the windshield wiper motor, it would freeze and cause abrasions to the hands whenever the lift-gate was opened. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer at least three times, but the contact was informed that he would have to pay for the repair expenses. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 44,000. The VIN was unknown.

59 Body problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/19/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. While examining the vehicle, the contact noticed a crack extending from the bottom of the rear glass to the bottom of the vehicle. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 31,000.

60 Body problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/23/2009

My complaint is on the rear back panel. When I bought this car my back panel cracked at 76,000 miles. Out of pocket cost to me to replace this panel $500. Now 2 months ago I noticed a crack in that panel and days later the entire panel flew off my car as I am driving down the road! I can only imagine the shock of the driver in the vehicle behind me. Ford/Mercury should man up and recall these. Find a permanent solution for an obvious design flaw on their part. Everywhere I go I see Mountaineers and explorers with cracked, half gone or completely gone rear back panels. Ridiculous.

61 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/04/2009

Most 2003 Mercury Mountaineers and Ford explorers are experiencing cracked lift gates around the emblem. Sometimes my lift gate opens on its own. . . Don't know if this is happening due to the crack but this is a defect in manufacturing our vehicles. Dealers know about it but won't repair it without charging the consumers. Drive thru car wash personnel advise drivers before they drive through that the crack is preexisting (so they all know about it?) but the owners of these cars can't get this defective manufacturing issue repaired at no charge to all of us?.

62 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

Rear lift gate on 2004 Mercury Mountaineer would not close. Noticed hinge attachment for glass looked as though it was falling off. Gate would not close and is damaged.

63 Body problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

Upper section of rear hatch body cracks. Made of plastic. Changed on next year models to all metal. This the second occurrence of the defect. Ford refuses to repair free of charge.

64 Body problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

Just under the rear window the back panel cracked in the cold weather the vehicle is kept in a garage when exiting the garage into the weather it just cracked just under the Mountaineer emblem all the way down the length of the panel and now the back rear window rattles.

65 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

I want Ford to recall there Mercury Mountaineer as it has a major safety issue. All of there Mercury from 2002 onward have a crack on there rear lift gate. I done google and almost net is full of complaints on this. Crack starts right below Mercury logo and keep increasing and increasing. My car logo not came off, but few cars, this logo blown off. Also now I learnt that car hinges holding this very rear hood came off. . I thought its mine, but again, almost web is full of complaints on this and knowing how risky this is, trying best to go to every look and corner so to ensure that Ford does repair ASAP.

66 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/20/2008

Crack appeared in body of vehicle in the back above and around the Mercury emblem. It contracts and expands depending on the temperature. There was no crash, impact or anything that caused this failure. It is a defect in the body. The consequences of this are the inability to use the hatch, the repair bill and the depreciation of the vehicle.

67 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

Crack on rear hatch from top of hatch down and around the emblem (under the rear window). Vehicle is a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer with 75k miles.

68 Body problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/17/2008

My 2005 Mercury Mountaineer developed a crack in the rear lift gate right around the Mercury emblem. I have seen many more with the same problem, both Ford explorers and the Mercury Mountaineer. When I took it to the dealer they were like too bad so sad it is out of warranty even though I bought a extended warranty from Ford. I have been looking around now and I see lots of them with the same problem. I have heard that Ford is fixing the explorers if it is under 5 years and under 75,000 miles but that just seems to be a dealer thing, I have not seen any official account of this.

69 Body problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

2004 Mercury Mountaineer rear window panel cracked and hinges will not stay tight. Ford dealer said this is a common problem but Ford will not repair if vehicle is not under warranty. Vehicle has 53,000 miles but I had dealer check vehicle while it was under warranty and they said all it needed was adjusting.

70 Body problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

I am having an issue with my hatchback. The emblem has a long and large crack on the left side of the emblem. I have noticed that there are several 2003 Mountaineers with the same issue. I am afraid that the crack will cause the glass to break. I noticed when I bought the vehicle the dealership tried to repair the issue once therefore I felt that I should advise/complain about the failure to see if a recall or a bulletin would be placed on the vehicle to repair the issue with no recourse or recurring issue. I am not sure why this issue is occurring but I would like for this issue to be repaired at not cost to me because again I have found many Mountaineers with the same issue and all have been 2003 so far. Please investigate and assist Ford/Mercury to produce a solution to the issue.
